Heather B. Moore knows how to take stories from the Bible and make them come alive. When I first picked up Bondage, I admit I was a bit intimidated by the list of characters in the first pages, and all of the Egyptian, Hebrew names.  However, Ms. Moore did an excellent job with building each character in a way that you become connected and familiar with them. There is suspense and action, with the majority of the story focusing on relationships. Volume One taught us about Moses’ time and place as well as the women who were influential in his life.  This is a book that will keep you up reading late into the night! The Moses Chronicles: Bondage is rich, well-written historical fiction at its best with messages about faith, prejudice and loyalty.

Content is for adults –violence, seduction, talk of harems and threat of assault.

About the Author

Heather B. Moore is the two-time Best of State and two-time Whitney Award winner for her historical fiction, the most recent being Esther the Queen. She is also the author of the nonfiction inspirational book Women of the Book of Mormon and the coauthor of Christ’s Gifts to Women with Angela Eschler. Heather is a columnist for Meridian Magazine on LDS topics.

Suspense is typically not my cup of tea, but I wanted to give Deceived a chance because the author is LDS and I knew it would be clean. This book starts off with a bang! Tara is taking refuge in her aunt’s home and slightly groggy from sleeping medication, she awakens to a horrible scene. A fight,a gun, and no memories of the murder she witnesses. She is whisked off to Idaho for protection. Joseph, a widowed rancher has been given the charge to protect her, but strange things are happening on his land. Soon both Tara and Joseph appear to be in real danger.

With plot twists, suspense, Irish folklore and clean romance, Deceived moves along swiftly. I had a bit of trouble believing and piecing together how everything unfolds, but it’s an enjoyable read! There are some elements of religion and faith discussed, but it’s not overbearing. If you’re a fan of cowboys, mystery and action this one is for you!

Content: murder, moderate gun related violence.

I picked up a copy of Destination Unknown from the Zondervan booth at ALA in Las Vegas this year. I know I can always count on Zondervan for high quality, clean Christian reads. Destination Unknown is the second in a series about cousins, but having not read the first, I had no problem picking it up and loving it! So, really it’s more of a companion novel. Author Amy Clipston does an excellent job exploring the painful process of “finding oneself” as teen and separating your wishes from the pressure of peers and the expectations of parents. Whitney is in her senior year, coasting by as head cheerleader, and up until this point she’s been the perfect child. 4.0 student, accepted into a prestigious college, with the popular football player boyfriend. A domino effect of events including a “D” in calculus causes a shift. Suddenly she’s painfully aware that her mom’s plans for her life may not be the same as her own and maybe her “friends” and true friends after all.

Whitney starts a downward spiral of small rebellions against her uber strict mother, and spends a lot of time on her knees. I absolutely love when teen titles encourage prayer. Christian behavior vs. church going Christian by name only  is also explored. I will be passing this book on to my daughters and purchasing the author’s other titles. I highly recommend it as a clean, contemporary read that hits on so many things: coming of age, bullying, repentance and loyalty without being heavy handed. Loved it!

Review

This is the first book I have ever read by Gerald N. Lund…I know, right?!! I jumped into book two of the series after a Deseret Book Blog Tour invitation, without reading book one, which I would not recommend. I think readers will miss a lot of the back story if they try to read out this series of order. But once I started to piece together names and the plot, and the circumstance surrounding the heirloom pouch called Le Guardian,  I loved the writing. There is a ton of suspense, plenty of action and good family principles. The villains are villainous indeed, and the mysterious plot twists make it unpredictable. The main character’s first name is Carruthers which is one of my husband’s family names, so the story is that much more personal for us! The setting vacillates between small town Utah and Lake Powell, which makes it fun . If you like books with espionage, history and a bit of magic then pick up The Guardian series.

We stopped a few feet inside the mine to let our eyes adjust to the darkened tunnel.Cody started to push his way past Dad, but Dad’s arm shot out and held him back. 

“Jean-Henri,” he cried. “Look!” He was pointing forward, directing his light at the floor. 

I moved up to see better. Suddenly the chills were back, only this time they were hitting every cell in my body. The dirt floor was covered with footprints. No, not footprints. Boot prints. And none of us had worn that kind of boots when we were in here before.

Gerald N. Lund received his B.A. and M.S. degrees in sociology from BYU. He also did extensive graduate work in New Testament studies at Pepperdine University, and studied Hebrew at the University of Judaism. He is a prolific author and speaker. His novels include The Work and the Glory Series, The Kingdom and the Crown Trilogy, Fire of the Covenant, The Undaunted, and his newest series,The Guardian. He has also written several books on gospel topics, including a doctrinal trilogy exploring our relationship with Heavenly Father and how He expresses His love to His children.

During his thirty-five years in the Church Educational System, Gerald N. Lund served as seminary teacher, institute teacher and director, curriculum writer, director of college curriculum, and zone administrator. His church callings have included servings as stake president and bishop.
