Sixteen years ago, a plague wiped out nearly all of humanity. The Company’s vaccine stopped the virus’s spread, but society was irrevocably changed. Those remaining live behind impenetrable city walls, taking daily doses of virus suppressant and relying on The Company for continued protection. They don’t realize that everything they’ve been told is a lie…

Clover Donovan didn’t set out to start a revolution—quiet, autistic, and brilliant, she’s always followed the rules. But that was before they forced her into service for the Time Mariners. Before they condemned her brother to death, compelling him to flee the city to survive. Before she discovered terrifying secrets about The Company.

Clover and the Freaks, her ragtag resistance group, are doing their best to spread the rebellion and stay under The Company’s radar. But when their hideout is discovered, they are forced, once again, to run. Only this time, The Company has special plans for Clover, plans that could risk her life and stop the uprising in its tracks…

Author Q & A

What is the world of Rebel Nation like? Is it similar to what we live in today, do you see our society heading in that direction?

Rebel Nation‘s world is one where a lot of the technology that makes us a modern society is gone. Not all of it, but a lot of it. A big part of the book takes place in Virginia City. When I sat down and thought about what the area around Reno would be like if you stripped away things like cars and computers, I realized that Virginia City was a thriving city long before any of those things came about. I knew that the Freaks could build something there, because they were working with infrastructure that had worked before.

What movies or books, if any, helped inspire Rebel Nation?

The whole Viral Nation series was inspired by my love of dystopian books. Stephen King’s The Stand andDavid Birn’s The Postman were two influences. I wanted to write about what happens next though. Lots of dystopia tells the story of the fall and the immediate after affects of the fall, but I wanted to write about what happens after the rebuilding. I guess I think of my books as post-post apocalyptic.

Who are our writing mentors and heroes?

Oh, wow. I’m such a big reader, and I have been for as long as I can remember. I’m even influenced by Dr. Seuss, and his ability to have a message that he doesn’t beat you over the head with. (Horton Hears a Who is one of my favorite picture books, and I love the story it has to tell about being heard.) Louisa May Alcott, C.S. Lewis, Margaret Attwood, Stephen King, Nancy Farmer, James Dashner—I think every author I read and love becomes a hero to me.

If you could transport your characters to any one place or time period where would you take them and why?

I’m not sure I would transport them anywhere. They are really important to their own place and time!

Vaccinations are a pretty hot topic, tell is why you chose to include it?

Vaccinations are the way that human beings deal with virus.  I think that if something like the virus in my book were to happen for real, there wouldn’t be people worried about whether or not to vaccinate. It would be a no-brainer.

On a personal level, I’m very much in support of vaccinating.

Is there anything you would go back and tell your teen self?

I’d tell my teen self that everything is going to be okay. That she’s making good choices, even though she isn’t sure of it yet. I’ve wondered if I’d warn myself about the boy who would grow up to break my heart, but I don’t think I would. Some things make you stronger when you go through them.

Do you have any songs that served as a backdrop to the setting?

I can’t listen to music while I’m writing. I wind up just listening and not actually writing!

Book blurb in one sentence?

How far are the Freaks willing to go for truth and justice?

Amazon * Barnes & Noble*  Goodreads

Tessa has finally made peace with her life as a Variant. She and long-time love Alec are officially a couple, and for the first time, she has everything she wants.

But the air is tense at FEA headquarters. An agent has disappeared, and rogue variant organization Abel’s Army is likely the culprit.

When Tessa is summoned for her second mission, she is unexpectedly launched into a massive conspiracy. Her best friend Holly is kidnapped and Tessa knows it was meant to be her. But who is after her? And more importantly, why?

When the FEA’s efforts to rescue Holly don’t yield any results, Tessa takes matters into her own hands. Desperate to save her friend and uncover the mystery behind Abel’s Army, Tessa launches her own investigation—but nothing could prepare her for what she finds. Everyone in her life is harboring secrets: Alec, her estranged mother, even the father she never knew.

The truth will take her out on the road and out of her comfort zone, with danger lurking everywhere. Summoning all of her courage and strength, Tessa must decide who can be trusted and what is worth fighting for—even if it means going against the life she thought she wanted. Her final decision will leave readers breathless.

Author Interview

Explain the FEA to us.

FEA means Forces with Extraordinary Abilities and it’s a branch of the FBI. The FEA mainly works cases with Variant involvement, but its agents also work in espionage if their talents are useful. “Major” is head of the FBI and most agents live in the so-called headquarters.

What differences are there between the world in Defector and our every day world?

Overall, it’s the same world, but there are Variants, people with extraordinary abilities, in “my book world”. The general public doesn’t know about them though, so it could theoretically still be our world. Who knows what our governments are hiding from us? 😉

If you could choose one extraordinary ability, what wouldn’t be and why?

I’d love to be able to heal myself and others. That way I wouldn’t have to watch loved ones suffer and I could help strangers as well.

Did you listen to any music while writing or have a book playlist?

Some books require music, other don’t. Sometimes I just let my favorite TV series run in the background. But Impostor and Defector have a playlist. Here’s the one I used for Impostor (and sometimes for Defector):
1. The Right Kind of Wrong by Leann Rimes
2. Nobody Knows by Pink
3. Born this Way by Lady Gaga
4. Hate that I love you by Rihanna
5. Fallin by Alicia Keys
6. I think it’s going to rain by Katie Melua
7. Tiger in the Night by Katie Melua
8. In my secret life by Katie Melua
9. Perfect Circle by Katie Melua
10. All in my head by Katie Melua
11. Hedonism by Skunk Anansie
12. Sorry seems to be the hardest by Mary J. Blige
13. Titanium by David Guetta feat Sia
14. What you don’t know by Monrose
15. Even heaven cries by Monrose
16. Bridge of Light by Pink
17. Family Portrait by Pink
(Tessa wants nothing more than a happy family, so the song is perfect.)
18. Just hold me by Maria Mena
19. The Rose by Leann Rimes
20. All good things come to an end by Nelly Furtado

Where is your dream writing retreat?

Bora Bora, in an overwater bungalow, so I could write while watching fish swim in the ocean.

One of my favorite things to do is get behind the lens of a camera. Last night I was hired to cover the Doc Martin summer pool party. Dr. Adam Martin puts on this great event each year. Water + sun + a giant slide + loads of fun. I spotted some great action and portraits of swimmers. Water photography is a blast! Bridget Campbell is more interested in music than men. In fact, she may be the only girl in the Scottish lowlands who isn't looking for a husband. But when her estranged grandfather's health begins to decline and he asks her to move into his castle, Bridget is introduced to a handsome Highlander who becomes a rival for her attention. Although perfect strangers, there's a connection between Bridget and Aidan MacLeod that she can't ignore. Can she stand up to the men in her life who are pressuring her to settle down?

At first uneasy about leaving her parents' modest home to live at Ty-Runach Castle, Bridget feels pressured to accept her grandfather's invitation. Robert had distanced himself from her mother when she married a man from a rival clan. The ancient feud between the MacDonalds and the Campbells broke her family apart, but maybe Bridget can heal the rift?

But someone clearly doesn't want her at the castle. Strange noises in the night and a frightening attack nearly send Bridget running from the keep. And then there's Aidan. Rumors of his reputation as a ladies man convince her to stay away lest she become the highlander's conquest. Yet her rebellious heart beats faster whenever Aidan is near. A single kiss lights a fire within that threatens to consume her. Can she resist Aidan's advances and rein in her runaway heart?

I purchased Her Rebellious Heart a few months a go as a free download on Amazon, and since we went to the Scottish festival this weekend, I wanted good a historical fiction with roots in Scotland. I was pleasantly surprised that this was clean, and the setting was authentic. I loved the descriptions of the North Sea, the crumbling castles, the tartans and feuds between clans. My only complaint is that at times the Scottish dialect was present and others times it wasn’t. Do not becomes “dinna” etc. Also, the flow could have been more smooth and the main villain definitely needed to be fleshed out more fully. It seems like the author cut the conflict short. It reads more like a novella than a full story. With more editing and filling out of story line this could have been much more. I did enjoy the surnames in the book…main man Aidan MacLeod carries my ancestral clan name!

Overall, if you want a short historical Scottish read as a small taste of the place, this may be a good pick, but I would wait until it goes up for free again.

Content: some tension and kissing, innuendoheather

About the Author

Marian McBride is an American author of Scottish descent. When she feels like honoring her roots, she plays her Celtic harp, but not as well as she’d like. Occasionally, she sings along, usually when she wants to punish her family.

Marian is not a particularly good Scot. She doesn’t enjoy haggis or bagpipes, but she does love a good Highland Games, particularly when men in kilts do the caber toss. “Her Rebellious Heart” is Marian’s sole novella. She hopes by showing some Scottish pride in her writing, her clansmen will forgive for not visiting home often.

Excerpt

“Rhona?”

She ignored the light rap on the door, not wishing for Wallace to see the results of her father’s anger.

“Would you like me to send him away, my lady?”

Rhona looked across the room at Emsley, her maid of three years. Her brother knocked again. “No, please let him in.”

“I’ll return later.”

“That won’t be necessary, Emsley. I prefer quiet tonight, but thank you.”

Emsley gathered up the dress Rhona had worn that day and answered the door. She glanced back at Rhona before stepping aside, allowing Wallace to enter. Rhona waited until the door closed behind the maid before speaking.

“I thought Father would have you occupied all evening.”

Wallace stepped toward the fire and lowered himself into the chair opposite Rhona. She kept her face turned. Though it didn’t appear it would bruise, her cheek still bore the redness from her father’s strong hand.

“He only just released me, but then I spoke with Graham.” Wallace leaned forward and using a gentle touch, turned her face. “You should have told me.”

“It would only have angered Father to have you caught in the middle.”

Wallace’s face tightened. “Has he ever done that before?”

“No, but it was bound to happen. Father and I have been at odds for years.”

“I know you stayed for me, Rhona.”

She smiled at her brother. Wallace had started at Eton when he was thirteen but returned home during all of his breaks. Rhona never wanted her brother to find himself alone for too long with Calum Davidson, but now that he was eighteen, Rhona knew she could no longer protect him.

“I’ve never regretted that decision.”

Wallace stared into the low-burning flames. “I want to go to university, but I can’t imagine returning here after. Alistair will inherit, and I have a chance to make a life for myself.”

“You’ve decided on a course?”

“I want to study the law.”

Rhona slowly shook her head. “If you told Father that, I can’t imagine he’s pleased.”

Wallace grinned. “Irate is what he is. He forbade it, of course, and promised to cut me off, but I don’t care.”

Rhona scooted forward in her chair. “You’ll make a fine solicitor one day. Don’t worry about Father. Mother’s money is not for me alone.”

“I cannot take anything from you.”

“You won’t. I’m giving it to you. Mother left you enough to pay for Oxford.”

Wallace sat forward. “You never said anything.”

“I couldn’t, not as long as you were beholden to Father. You can make your own decisions now, without interference.”

Wallace leaned back, his lips forming a wide grin. “Father won’t like this.”

Rhona laughed, then covered her mouth. “No, he won’t.”

Wallace sobered, his eyes studying her cheek. “Promise me you won’t stay here any longer.”

Her brother’s fierce words brought her reality to the surface. She would be gone, but she would not marry Crawford. The only way to ensure that her father could not force her was to act tonight. Her plan would require her brother’s cooperation.

“Wallace, listen to me. I need to ask something of you. It won’t be easy, and I can’t explain why.”

“You’re worrying me.”

Rhona reached out and covered his hands with her own. A few moments ago mirth had filled her mind, but now desperation clouded her heart. “Will you trust me?”

Fans of Libba Bray's The Diviners will love the blend of fantasy and jazz-hot Chicago in this stylish series.

After rescuing her parents from the Seelie king at Hearst Castle, Callie is caught up in the war between the fairies of the Midnight Throne and the Sunlit Kingdoms. By accident, she discovers that fairies aren't the only magical creatures in the world. There's also Halfers, misfits that are half fairy and half other--laced with strange magic and big-city attitude. As the war heats up, Callie's world falls apart. And even though she's the child of prophecy, she doubts she can save the Halfers, her people, her family, and Jack, let alone herself. The fairies all say Callie is the Bad Luck Girl, and she's starting to believe them.

A strong example of diversity in YA, the American Fairy Trilogy introduces Callie LeRoux, a half-black teen who stars in this evocative story full of American history and fairy tales.

Praise for Bad Luck Girl:

"All the powers that be want to use Callie's magic to win the war for their side, and nobody cares what happens to Callie, Jack or the Halfers, raising the stakes to frighteningly high levels. Callie and Zettel bring this stellar trilogy to a satisfyingly sentimental conclusion." --Kirkus Reviews, Starred Review

"[Zettel's] strong characterizations, historical detail, and carefully constructed fantastic elements create a high-energy literary fusion that fans will devour." --SLJ

Fire and Ice is today’s stop on the official blog tour for Bad Luck Girl. This is book three in the American Fairy trilogy, and having not read the first two, I jumped right in when offered a review copy. Faeries and historical fiction mixed? Yes, please! The book picks right up in the middle of Callie’s involvement in a war between the seelie and unseelie courts. By inadvertently killing a king’s daughter, she is once again in the thick of things. She, her family, and friend Jack are fleeing to Chicago in the midst of the depression. The action is literally non-stop. You will also get a firsthand look at what life was like in America in the 1930’s while reality and magic mingle together.

Bad Luck Girl is a great pick for younger readers because the main character’s voice is on the young end of the spectrum. I would highly recommend reading the first two in the series before picking up book three. While not impossible to catch the drift of the backstory, I think it would be much more enjoyable to really get to know all involved through the separate books. I loved the non-fiction elements blended with fantasy and the ethnic diversity of characters. Thanks so much to Random House for a fun fairy read!heather

Amelia Beckett is delighted to be a widow. Married by proxy to a man she'd never met, Amelia recognizes that a fortuitous entry into widowhood frees her from meddlesome chaperones and matchmakers. Heiress to her mother's sugar plantation in Jamaica, she happily anticipates working in a man's world, with the additional credibility of her new title: Lady Lockwood. But with the arrival of Captain Sir William Drake, her plans quickly go awry...

William has traversed the Atlantic with one purpose. If he cannot prove that Amelia's marriage to his brother was a fraud, she will be entitled to a sizeable portion of his family's estate. He is determined to return this duplicitous "Lady" to London for an official hearing, and he carries with him a letter that will ensure her cooperation...

Left with no choice, Amelia joins the captain on his return voyage to England, and the two quickly find that ship life does not allow for evasion. Amelia and William are ceaselessly thrown together, and amidst fierce storms and ocean battles, what began as antipathy seems to be evolving quite unexpectedly. But as they draw ever closer to their destination, will the impossibility of their circumstances shatter any hope of a future together?

I sometimes get in serious reading slumps, when I just can’t find a book to fit my mood. I was in one when Becoming Lady Lockwood arrived in the mail. I think I may have cheered for several reasons. One, I took the author photos for Jennifer and two, I am a huge fan of both historical fiction and maritime tales. Jennifer Moore sweeps readers away to an adventure on the high seas between Jamaica and England. Lady Lockwood has just been widowed in a marriage of convenience. Having never met her husband, she is actually happy to be unattached and now able to avoid the societal pressures that come with being single. She is headstrong and independent with a fortune of her own wrapped up in sugar, when Lord Lockwood’s brother appears. A marine captain, he’s been sent to summon Lady Lockwood back to London. There is friction, of course, as the captain calls our main heroine by her maiden name–Amelia Beckett while on board his ship. He is out to challenge Amelia and his brother’s arranged marriage and reclaim all of the family fortune. Sailing through enemy waters in time of war makes for a dangerous journey.

I absolutely loved every page of this clean Regency romance. Jennifer’s characters were enjoyable, even side characters had personalities to remember. They have a lot of growing to do. There is mystery, intrigue, and action to keep readers turning pages. I highly recommend this one to fans of Julianne Donaldson and Sarah M Eden. It is a clean pick with historically correct factoids and a unique plot. Well done Jennifer! Can not wait to read all Ms. Moore has up her sleeve in the coming years. Thanks to Jennifer and Covenant for the sneak peek.
