The Jewel means wealth. The Jewel means beauty. The Jewel means royalty. But for girls like Violet, the Jewel means servitude. Not just any kind of servitude. Violet, born and raised in the Marsh, has been trained as a surrogate for the royalty—because in the Jewel the only thing more important than opulence is offspring.

Purchased at the surrogacy auction by the Duchess of the Lake and greeted with a slap to the face, Violet (now known only as #197) quickly learns of the brutal truths that lie beneath the Jewel’s glittering facade: the cruelty, backstabbing, and hidden violence that have become the royal way of life.

Violet must accept the ugly realities of her existence... and try to stay alive. But then a forbidden romance erupts between Violet and a handsome gentleman hired as a companion to the Duchess’s petulant niece. Though his presence makes life in the Jewel a bit brighter, the consequences of their illicit relationship will cost them both more than they bargained for.

The Cover

LOVE! Picked it up because of the gorgeous shimmery cover. It reminds me of The Winner’s Curse. I am like a moth to the flame with covers of girls in beautiful ball gowns.

Liked

The ending. Surprise twist and lots of suspense. This is a cliffhanger, so you will have to pick up book two.

The complex characters. These dutchesses, their sons, servants and companions have a lot going on.

Jewel moves along at a fast pace, it is easy to read in one sitting. You are repulsed, yet drawn to the story at the same time.

Didn’t Like

The idea of another human being both a surrogate mother and servant at the same time is creepy. Complete misuse of women’s bodies and souls. There is a dark dystopian edge to all that is shiny and glitters in Jewel.

Lots of drama. Jewel’s society and royalty are glitsy, glamour and corrupt taken to the extreme.

Couldn’t figure out the augeries–genetic mutations that involve the owner’s ability to make magic.

Content

sex, moderate violence, servitude and use of women.

She grew up in a small town outside Boston, where her librarian mother instilled a deep love of reading at a young age. Amy moved to New York City in 2000 to study theater at New York University. Unfortunately, her acting career didn’t quite pan out. She worked in restaurants, as an administrative assistant, a nanny, and a sales representative for a wine distributor before the lack of creativity in her life drove her to begin writing.

Amy received her MFA in Creative Writing for Children from The New School, where she was lucky enough to meet a fabulous community of YA writers who keep her sane on a daily basis. She lives in Harlem, where she spends her days writing, eating cheese, and occasionally binge watching The Vampire Diaries.

Princess Snow is missing.

Her home planet is filled with violence and corruption at the hands of King Matthias and his wife as they attempt to punish her captors. The king will stop at nothing to get his beloved daughter back—but that’s assuming she wants to return at all.

Essie has grown used to being cold. Temperatures on the planet Thanda are always sub-zero, and she fills her days with coding and repairs for the seven loyal drones that run the local mines.

When a mysterious young man named Dane crash-lands near her home, Essie agrees to help the pilot repair his ship. But soon she realizes that Dane’s arrival was far from accidental, and she’s pulled into the heart of a war she’s risked everything to avoid. With the galaxy’s future—and her own—in jeopardy, Essie must choose who to trust in a fiery fight for survival

Stitching Snow reminded me a lot of the Wondla Series by Tony DiTerlizzi. Take Snow White and mash it up with Star Wars like drones, add some cage fighting and you have a fresh take on an old fairy tale. Essie is living a quiet life repairing mining drones on planet Thanda when a ship crashes across the sky. The lone survivor is a mysterious and dangerous boy named Dane. Essie’s goal is to get him up and out of her life as soon as possible. The two work on repairing or “stitching” the code to get his mode of transportation back in the air. But as the plot unravels, we learn Dane is way more than meets the eye, much more than a traveling treasure hunter. He is a threat in more ways than one. Essie has major trust issues from her abuse in the past and any male is to be held at more than arms distance.

With slow building romance and plenty of action, Essie’s journey takes readers to several different planets. All the while she has sidekick dwarf drones Dimwit and Cusser by her side. There are dark villains, an evil step-mother and the potential inheritance of a royal throne. Overall, I really enjoyed R.C. Lewis debut. It took a while to understand the world and mindset of each character, but once rolling there is plenty going on! I also really like that this is a standalone. The techy, sci fi side isn’t normally my forte, but the complexity of Dane and Essie’s relationship kept me hooked. Kudos to Lewis for holding my interest and wrapping things up in a hopeful, romantic way.

Content: recommend for 16 and older because of two attempted rape scenes and heavy themes. No swearing. Moderate violence.

That may explain why her characters don’t like to be pigeonholed. Coincidentally, R.C. enjoys reading about quantum physics and the identity issues of photons.

Her debut novel Stitching Snow is a sci-fi retelling of Snow White, releasing October 14th from Hyperion.

Wildfire by Mary Lowry ~ Author Guest Post

wildfire_cover_final

Julie has an obsession with fire that began after her parents died when she was twelve years old. Her pyromania leads her to take an unlikely job as a forest firefighter on an elite, Type 1 “Hotshot” crew of forest firefighters who travel the American West battling wildfires. The only woman on the twenty person crew, Julie struggles both to prove her worth and find a place of belonging in the dangerous, insular, and very masculine world of fire (while also fighting against an eating disorder she’s had since her teens). As her season “on the line” progresses so do her relationships with the strange and varied cast of characters that make up her hotshots team–and she learns what it means to put your life on the line for someone else. Wildfire is a tough, gritty, and fascinating story from an exciting new voice in American fiction.

Eating Disorders and Grief in my novel “Wildfire”
Julie, the narrator of my novel “Wildfire,” became on orphan at the age of 12. After flirting with pyromania, she turned to bulimia as a way to assuage her grief at the loss of her parents. It’s incredibly common for young women to develop eating disorders as a way to maintain an illusion of control, especially when their lives feel out of control in other ways. Julie feels very ashamed of her binging and purging and she works hard to keep it a secret.

After flunking out of college, Julie is hired onto an elite 20-person “hotshot” crew of wildland firefighters. Ironically, hotshot crewmembers throw up often as well, but for very different reasons. Hotshots throw up from drinking too much, participating in impromptu eating contests, working out too hard, putting in their first dip of Copenhagen, etc etc. And unlike Julie, the hotshots are kind of proud when they throw up–they even brag about it. It’s part of their machismo culture.

I thought it would be interesting to put Julie—who struggles privately with the shame of her eating disorder—in the middle of this group of rowdy guys who are constantly barfing as well, but out in front of people and with no shame attached. I wanted to see what crazy and fun and ultimately healing events would unfold. Also, I wanted Julie in a situation where she needed plenty of food (i.e. fuel) in order to do the demanding work of fighting wildfires. That is another thing that helps Julie to overcome her struggles with bulimia. In some ways, eating disorders can both come from and perpetuate loneliness. Joining up with a crew of wildland firefighters ultimately helps Julie to break out of her isolation and let go of the eating disorder that has been destroying her life.

In this sequel to Doon, Mackenna Reid realizes she made a horrible mistake in choosing to follow her dreams of Broadway instead of staying in the enchanted land of Doon. To make everything worse, she's received her Calling—proof she and Duncan are each other's one true love—and it's pure torment, especially when visions of the very alluring Scottish prince appear right before she goes on stage. So when Duncan tells her an ancient curse threatens to overtake Doon and the new queen and Kenna’s best friend, Veronica, needs her to return, Kenna doesn't have to think twice. With darkness closing in on all sides, Kenna and Vee must battle a world of nightmares in order to protect the kingdom. But it will take the ultimate test of courage for Kenna to salvage her happily ever after.

The Doon series is one of my all-time favorites. First of all, if you haven’t read book one,  a reimagining of Brigadoon, I would suggest picking it up before diving into book 2. There is a lot of back story you will need, plus it rocks! This second installment, Destined for Doon, is told from both Makenna and Vee’s viewpoint. Kenna is back in the modern world working as a theater intern whe Duncan MacCrae shows up on the scene, as handsome and brooding as ever. There’s trouble a foot back in the kingdom–poisoned petunias, a zombie fungus and evil threatening the borders. Kenna is summoned by her best friend Vee to look for a solution.

Once again there are plenty of modern culture– music and movie references, as well as the snarky voice that is Kenna. The romance element is toned down quite a bit as the four main characters are working through their own personal issues while trying to learn how to work together. But there is also tension, suspense and realistic angst. I truly loved Duncan in Destined for Doon. He is suffering and quiet, but at times his fun sense of humor peeks through the clouds.

This is a series that brings midieval Scotland with kilts and swords right into your reading room. There are Christian elements which strengthen the characters. Themes are forgiveness, self-doubt, healing and trust.

As handsome and talented as this group of young adults are, they learn they simply can’t do it alone. I personally am thrilled this is a four book series, because I always end wanting more! Major cliffhanger ending this time around with foreshadowing to set things up. Go grab Doon and then Destined for Doon!

Content: moderate sexual tension and kissing scenes, drinking, moderate violence with a beheading. Clean language.

the last strawYesterday I had the opportunity to attend a special screening of two new movies coming to stores just in time for Christmas from Covenant Communications. No Ordinary Shepherd and The Last Straw. I’m pretty sure there wasn’t a dry eye in the house at the end of either of them. Lots of sniffles heard in the theater! Both are clean and appropriate for families.

Head to your local Seagull book as I’ve heard they may have hit shelves already. Special thanks to Covenant Communications for giving me a good cry and an uplifting start to the season…

no ordinary sheperd

No Ordinary Shepherd

As the sun beams brightly on the hills surrounding Palestine, one young shepherd boy thoughtfully considers the significance of the day. The child, crippled in a terrible accident, has always treasured his shepherd father’s tale of that starlit night so many years before — a night filled with the wonder of angelic heralds and a tiny Bethlehem stable sheltering the chosen Messiah. Now, years since that sacred event, tales of Jesus of Nazareth’s miraculous birth touch the young boy’s faith. When he meets the gentle stranger in the hills — a man strangely familiar to him — the faithful young shepherd encounters a miracle of his own.

The Last Straw

Christmas is supposed to be a season of love, warm feelings, and happy hearts. But with the childrens’ constant bickering, pretty packages and a sweet-smelling tree don’t come close to filling the McDonald home with the true spirit of the first Christmas. Then Mom remembers an old tradition of building a soft bed for Baby Jesus one straw at a time. Each time someone secretly does something nice for another family member, he or she gets to add a single straw to the manger. Soon the childrens’ quarreling and negative feelings subside and the homemade crib is overflowing. But for one family member, a required act of kindness becomes more than he can take. The Last Straw is a true story.

Themes: Cyberbullying, grief, service, sibling rivalry

Content: Kissing, some tight clothing.

After receiving a full-ride scholarship to Mills College for Girls, it appears Sarah's future is all laid out before her … but then she walks into a poetry class led by Mr. Haddings, a student teacher from the nearby University of Washington. Suddenly, life on the UW campus seems very appealing, and Sarah finds herself using her poetry journal to subtly declare her feelings for Mr. Haddings. And she becomes convinced Mr. Haddings is flirting back. As she sets off for school in the rain, she slips a poem in her back pocket—one that will declare her feelings once and for all.Mr. Haddings has noticed Sarah's attention; the fallout from any perceived relationship with a student is too great a risk, and he has decided to end all speculation that morning. But everything changes when Mr. Haddings feels the thud on his front bumper when he glances away from the road and finds Sarah in the street with blood pooling beneath her.

This is this first novel I have read by Lorie Ann Grover, but not the first in the Blink YA imprint. I was thrilled to pick up another clean YA contemporary read with Christian undertones. The story line took me aback at first because it is about a student and graduate student teacher who feel attracted to one another. That is usually an automatic DNF for me, because I just can’t stomach student-teacher relationships in any form. However, in Hit this is not the main focus of the story line and told from two points of view, you get a full picture that this is more a story about grief, trauma and forgiveness. There is truly something magical about this book that defies description. It is short, easy to read and simplistic, yet deep. At the end I felt transformed and wanted to read more. Author Lorie Ann Grover weaves in poetry with raw straight to the point realities of the aftermath at a car accident scene and the immediate consequences. I do wish the ending were a bit longer, or not so neatly tied up. I’m not sure if the finished version is different form the uncorrected bound proof, but I missed how the victim came to know the driver was her teacher Hastings. It seemed some of the story was cut or left out.

Hit is based on the real life experience of the author’s best friend who’s child was also hit at an intersection. It makes you think twice about distracted driving and how quickly life can change. I’m not sure how Grover got me there–to the point of loving this book and wanting a sequel, but she did! I am sad that there is not a book two in the works at this time (please, please write an epilogue or novella). This is a strong standalone.

Galley Glancing ~ October ARCs

07 Oct, 2014 by in eidelweiss, galley glancing, netgalley, wishlist Leave a comment

No matter how many books I have in my TBR pile, I find that I still love Galley Glancing every once in a while. So many shiny new titles available on Netgalley and Eidelweiss!  I haven’t been doing much e reading lately because I’ve found it affects my sleep and also makes it hard for my “brain to shut off.” Many times I use an i phone to read and it heats up too fast in my hand. Nook…toast. It always malfunctioned so I gave up. I also feel like once I request a copy online, if I get ten pages in and hate it, I am then bound to review it. The last three I’ve requested I’ve had a hard time with.

How do you DNF on Netgalley?

What e reader do you prefer?

Are you a paper reader or e reader and why?

I prefer paper copies.

While I know ebooks are the direction many publishers are going to push promotional copies, I miss getting uncorrected bound proofs and ARCs as often as I used to. Paper is still my preferred method of reading. You just can’t beat a book!

Here’s a few titles that caught my eye online and will go on my wishlist.

Cinder & Ella
by Kelly Oram
Published October 1, 2014

It’s been almost a year since eighteen-year-old Ella Rodriguez was in a car accident that left her crippled, scarred, and without a mother. After a very difficult recovery, she’s been uprooted across the country and forced into the custody of a father that abandoned her when she was a young child. If Ella wants to escape her father’s home and her awful new stepfamily, she must convince her doctors that she’s capable, both physically and emotionally, of living on her own. The problem is, she’s not ready yet. The only way she can think of to start healing is by reconnecting with the one person left in the world who’s ever meant anything to her—her anonymous Internet best friend, Cinder.

Hollywood sensation Brian Oliver has a reputation for being trouble. There’s major buzz around his performance in his upcoming film The Druid Prince, but his management team says he won’t make the transition from teen heartthrob to serious A-list actor unless he can prove he’s left his wild days behind and become a mature adult. In order to douse the flames on Brian’s bad-boy reputation, his management stages a fake engagement for him to his co-star Kaylee. Brian isn’t thrilled with the arrangement—or his fake fiancée—but decides he’ll suffer through it if it means he’ll get an Oscar nomination. Then a surprise email from an old Internet friend changes everything.

Author Interview

Tell us a little about yourself.

I read a lot and talk way too much. My imagination never stops, I’m easy going, I’m sarcastic, and I’m left-handed. I’m a big sports nut. (Watching not playing because I am SO not athletic.) I love to sing, play golf, and spend time outdoors. I’m a beach bum. (Or I was when I used to live by the beach.) And I am a wife of thirteen years, mother to four crazy kids, and owner of one very cool cat named Mr. Darcy.

Have you always wanted to be a writer?

I’ve always been a writer. I’ve written stories since I was a little kid and completed my first novel at 15. But I didn’t actually have any idea that’s what I wanted to be until I was a married stay-home-mom. It had always been just a hobby that I never considered could be a real profession until so many people told me I should do it.

Was there any music that inspired Cinder & Ella or helped you in the writing process?

I can’t write with music on. It’s too distracting for me. But I usually have some sort of playlist for each book I write. It’s just a list of songs that remind me of the book or certain characters. I have quite a long playlist for Cinder & Ella. I won’t list all the songs here, but I’ll tell you the one song that I’ve adopted as Brian & Ella’s song. It’s Parachute by Train. If you get a chance, listen to it. Both the lyrics and the tone of the song sort of sum up Brian and Ella’s relationship for me.

What are your favorite books/sagas/trilogies? And your favorite authors?

Oh, the list could go on forever… I’ll try to keep it reasonable… Graceling by Kristen Cashore, Leaving Paradise by Simone Elkeles, The Uglies by Scott Westerfield, The Seven Realms series by Cinda Williams Chima, The Mediator & 1-800-Where-R-You seres by Meg Cabot, anything at all by Meg, actually, and anything by John Green or Sarah Dessen. Edenbrook by Julianne Donaldson, The Host by Stephenie Meyer, The Broken Aro series by Jen Wylie, The Beka Cooper series by Tamora Pierce, The Mortal Instrauments series by Cassandra Claire, The Grisha series by Leigh Bardugo, Soul Screamers series by Rachel Vincent, the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead, and all Jennifer L. Armentrout’s YA stuff. Again, this list could go on, but I’ll spare you.

Why the adaptation of Cinderella fairy tale? Do you like adaptations of classic fairy tales? What is your the most favorite adaptation and of which tale? Why Cinderella?

Because it’s my favorite fairy tale. I’ve loved it since I was a kid and I’m a junkie when it comes to watching/reading different adaptations. If I see one, I buy it. Even if I’ve never heard of the author. I can’t help it. My favorite movie adaptation is the Hillary Duff movie called A Cinderella Story. My favorite book adaptation is Cindy Ella by Robin Palmer. Both are very cute, fun versions of the tale. I’m really excited to see the new Disney movie that’s coming out next year!

What advice would you give to young writers?

Two things: Read and write! Read as much as you can. Everything and anything you can get your hands on. You’d be surprised how much you will learn and absorb simply by reading other people’s work. And then, write, write, and write some more. Like any hobby, talent, or skill, practice makes perfect. Talent, though extremely helpful, is not everything. Writing is a craft that you can learn and get better at with hard work. The more you do it, the more you’ll get better at it.

Exquisite Captive
Dark Caravan Cycle #1
Author: Heather Demetrios
Release Date: October 7th, 2014
Publisher: Balzer+Bray

Forced to obey her master.
Compelled to help her enemy.

Determined to free herself.
Nalia is a jinni of tremendous ancient power, the only survivor of a coup that killed nearly everyone she loved. Stuffed into a bottle and sold by a slave trader, she’s now in hiding on the dark caravan, the lucrative jinni slave trade between Arjinna and Earth, where jinn are forced to grant wishes and obey their human masters’ every command. She’d give almost anything to be free of the golden shackles that bind her to Malek, her handsome, cruel master, and his lavish Hollywood lifestyle.Enter Raif, the enigmatic leader of Arjinna’s revolution and Nalia’s sworn enemy. He promises to free Nalia from her master so that she can return to her ravaged homeland and free her imprisoned brother—all for an unbearably high price. Nalia’s not sure she can trust him, but Raif’s her only hope of escape. With her enemies on the hunt, Earth has become more perilous than ever for Nalia. There’s just one catch: for Raif’s unbinding magic to work, Nalia must gain possession of her bottle…and convince the dangerously persuasive Malek that she truly loves him. Battling a dark past and harboring a terrible secret, Nalia soon realizes her freedom may come at a price too terrible to pay: but how far is she willing to go for it?

About The Author

When she’s not traipsing around the world or spending time in imaginary places, Heather Demetrios lives with her husband in New York City. Originally from Los Angeles, she now calls the East Coast home. Heather is a recipient of the PEN New England Susan P. Bloom Discovery Award for her debut novel, Something Real, which Publisher’s Weekly calls “[An] addictive yet thoughtful debut” about reality TV stardom. She is the author of the upcoming EXQUISITE CAPTIVE, a smoldering fantasy about jinn in Los Angeles and what Kirkus called in its starred review “an intoxicating, richly realized realm of magic, politics, spirituality and history” (#1 in the DARK CARAVAN CYCLE). She is also the author of the upcoming I’ll Meet You There (Winter 2015). I’ll Meet You There is a love story about a young combat veteran and a girl trapped in their small town, both struggling to escape the war at home. Heather is the founder of Live Your What, an organization dedicated to fostering passion in people of all ages and creating writing opportunities for youth of limited economic means. She is proud to have an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts. You can always find her on Twitter (@HDemetrios), ogling the military dogs she wants to adopt (but can’t because her NYC apartment is way too small). Exquisite Captive Music Playlist

When I first came to HarperCollins to talk to all the publishing jinn there about Exquisite Captive and the Dark Caravan Cycle, I passed out mixtapes I’d made and some candy called “Wish” (I kid you not) that I’d picked up in Morocco when I was doing research for Book 2 of the series. I did this because, to me, Exquisite Captive is a sensual story: sexy, yes, but also incorporating all five senses. In order to write the story, I needed to drown myself in the landscape of Middle Eastern and North African culture and I wanted to bring everyone working on the book to this gorgeous, magical place I was just discovering. My hope is that as you get to know my jinni, Nalia, you’ll hear the sound of the sitar, smell sandalwood incense, taste savri, the spicy jinn wine, and feel the pulse of the four elements against your fingertips. The music on this playlist helped draw me into the world I wanted to create and brought it to life for me. Though my jinn are not Arab (they’re their own race!), I wanted to pay homage to the cultures that jinn mythology predominantly arise from and the music helped me find the balance between creating my own unique story and evoking the Arabian Nights. Exquisite Captive is about a jinni who has been trafficked to Earth and is owned by a human master who’s evil with a capital E. She’s desperate to be free of him and return to her homeland, save her brother, and put the genocide of her entire caste behind her. But this is a trilogy – we know she’s going to run into lots of trouble along the way…and maybe fall in love with a certain revolutionary. The series begins in LA (Book 1), moves on to Morocco (Book 2), and finally ends in Arjinna, the jinn realm (Book 3). This playlist reflects this constant interplay between high fantasy and dark, modern fantasy that I’m working with, especially in Book 1. If these tracks don’t make you want to go to a hookah bar, sign up for a belly dancing class, and book a ticket to Morocco (with a stopover for some quality beach yoga in LA), I don’t know what will!! So, as my Moroccan friends would say: yalla habibi! (Let’s go, darling!)

Below are the songs – you’ll find most of them on my YouTube Playlist.

1. Slave
By Yeah Yeah Yeahs
This is sort of my theme song for the book. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are one of my favorite bands and Karen O’s voice is deliciously dark on this track. It’s got that sexy LA vibe I wanted for the book and, hello!, it’s about slavery. It definitely speaks to the tension between Nalia and Malek and that undercurrent of desire that confuses both of them.

2. I’m in Here
By Sia
Oh my gosh, this song is so perfect for Nalia as a jinni trapped in her bottle. It’s heartbreaking and whenever I hear it, I feel intensely aware of how awful it would be to be in exile, a prisoner who’s been forgotten by everyone. Left for dead.

3. Trust in Me
By Susheela Raman
This song – I can’t even. Susheela Raman is a fabulous Egyptian artist – all of her work is so transportive. This is the greatest cover I’ve ever heard – you might recognize it from “The Jungle Book.” I can’t tell you how many times I listened to it as I worked on this book. It’s got a seductive Middle Eastern groove that’s a perfect soundtrack for Habibi, the secret underground jinn club in LA. It was especially helpful in the hot hot HOT dance scene I wrote between Nalia and Raif. My goal is to make you blush with that one: let me know if you do!

4. Kamakshi
By Susheela Raman

This song is gorgeous and haunting. I have no idea what the lyrics are, but the way Susheela sings reminds me of the Call to Prayer. Malek (Nalia’s master) is Saudi and this song gets me into the zone when I’m thinking about his past – which is very dark and you’ll learn more about in Book 2.

5. Madness
By Muse
Pretty much the Nalia and Raif theme song. Muse is just sexy, plain and simple, and this song is all about a relationship that’s dangerous and inevitable. It’s about damning the consequences.

6. What Now
By Rihanna
This song reminded me of Nalia, especially after I saw the video. In the video, Rihanna seems trapped (and is also rocking some fabulous jinni couture accessories). I also think it shows Nalia’s confusion about Raif – her feelings for him confuse her and it’s hard for her to tell how he feels about her.

7. The Gloaming
By Radiohead

The first line says it all: “Jinni let out of the bottle it is now the witching hour.” This song is creepy and dark and makes me think of Haran, the cannibalistic ghoul who is out on the prowl and sees Earth as one big jinni buffet.

8. Rabbit Heart
By Florence + The Machine

This song is all about fear and going for someone you care about, even if it scares the crap out of you. It’s also about finding that courage hiding inside you. Florence says, “I must become the lion hearted girl ready for a fight before I make the final sacrifice.” You’ll get why this reminded me of Nalia when you reach the end of the book. No matter how tough and brave Nalia is, she’s still a girl facing unimaginable odds, fighting for her life and her heart.

9. Burn
By Anoushka Shankar & Karsh Kale
This song reminds me of a certain dance scene in the book. . .It’s all about that passion simmering under the surface of two people who are drawn to one another. I wrote most of Book 2 to Anoushka and her famous sitar-playing dad, Ravi Shankar. I love the sitar – whenever I hear it, the whole world of Exquisite Captive just comes to life.

10. Arabian Dance
Composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky

You’ll probably recognize this from The Nutcracker. It’s such an elegant song, with gorgeous Arabic undertones in the composition. It calls to mind the harem and some of those classic images from The Arabian Nights. You can watch the dance on YouTube, as well. It’s lovely.

11. Amarain
By Amr Diab
This song is one of my favorites. I think Amr is Egyptian and he’s popular in the Arab world because of his fun dance beats. I think the jinn in Habibi would definitely get down to this!

12. Leiley ( My Night )
By Dania

This is from the Putumayo Arabic Groove album, which is great fun. Doesn’t this song make you want to go on a camel ride and eat kebab and learn how to belly dance? I absolutely love the sound of Arabic and the wonderful lilt in the singer’s voice.

13. Moi Et Toi
By Abdel Ali Slimani

Another great track from Putumayo’s Arabic Groove. This is an excellent introduction to the wealth of fabulous music in the Arab world. Again, I can hear this being played at Habibi.

14. Sitar Ritual
By Badmarsh & Shri

This is a trip hop duo from the UK that I found on one of the Buddha Bar CD’s. It’s got that Arabic flair with a modern twist. My UK editor tells me she runs to the Dark Caravan soundtrack I sent her and I suspect this is one of the songs that keeps her going through London.

15. Palm of the Prophet
By Antaeus

Another trippy song that sort of keeps you in the world of Exquisite. Sexy and dark and a little bit mysterious.

16. Mahima
By Susheela Raman

I think of Nalia doing her Ghan Aisouri training, Sha’a Rho (affectionately dubbed “jinni yoga” by readers), to this song. Sha’a Rho is a deep spiritual practice with intense physical postures that are intended to increase magical flow within a jinni warrior.

17. Genie in a Bottle
By Christina Aguilera
I mean, obviously.

18. Dark Horse
By Katy Perry
I really like the Egyptian beat here and it makes me think of Nalia and Malek and how he’s always wanting to mess with magic that he doesn’t understand. Nalia’s also pretty fierce with him in that girl power, Katy Perry way. I’m guessing the video is probably offensive to Egyptians, though.

19. You Don’t Own Me
By Lesley Gore
I could not resist adding this! I feel like this would be Nalia’s jam. “You don’t own me [Malek]. I’m not just one of your many toys.” Ha! This song would really piss him off.

20. Friend Like Me
From Disney’s Aladdin
And now for some goofy fun and a nod to pop culture’s understanding of jinn. I recently saw Aladdin on Broadway and it was interesting to see Disney’s perspective on jinn servitude. Not at all like my jinn mythology, but fun nonetheless!

21. I Dream of Jeannie theme song
I couldn’t resist. It makes me do a happy dance, even if the premise of the show is the anti-Exquisite Captive. Aladdin and Jeannie were my only touchstones for jinn mythology until I started digging deeper and doing some serious research about jinn around the world and, of course, reading The Arabian Nights.

Review

If you are ready to dive into a setting and not come out until dawn, Exquisite Captive will suck you in and trap you. With lush fantasy and writing that evokes all five senses, Demetrios explores the Arabian Nights jinn. Nalia is an empress, the last of her race and very powerful. That is until she is sold on the dark caravan to a master, Malek who holds the ability to summon her and place her back into an iron bottle. Malek is conflicted and complicated as both abusive captor and a man on a mission to convince the woman he loves to love him back. Readers see multi faceted characters with internal and external conflicts, set in a culture of castes, Hollywood money and corporate corruption.

I loved the fantasy element and the world building that had me fully immersed. The author puts so much thought into the society, the culture and the sighst and smells. You will want to consult with the guide in the front of the book, as at times it’s hard to keep track of the different kinds of Jinnis (genies) and the powers they possess.

Raif…let’s talk about my favorite of the main men. As soon as he shows up, and later when he is dancing with Nalia in an underground club, I found myself intrigued. I love his loyalty to family and his courage to face possible death in the name of love. There’s so much to love about this book. It is multi-layered and no character is flat. There is a charcter arc and much discovery still left wide open for the upcoming sequel.

Overall I was hooked! I picked up the book and didn’t put it down. However, I did skim over the sections with graphic violence and abuse. There is occasional but very strong language, hookah smoking, alcohol, implied homosexuality and sensuality. Therefore, I feel it’s a better fit for ages 18 and over. 4/5 stars.
