Treasure by S. Smith

It’s 2077. There’s no apocalypse, but some things are different. Things like the weather, the internet, and food. In twelve-year-old Clare’s world, blueberry is just a flavor and apples are found only in fairy tales.

One day Clare meets Ana, who teaches her about seeds and real food, despite suspicions that such actions are illegal.

When the authorities discover the children’s forbidden tomato plant and arrest their mother, Clare and her brother flee. Clare has heard of a place called “The Garden State,” and with their bikes, a little money, and backpacks, the children begin a lonely cross-country journey that tests them both physically and spiritually.

Will they succeed in their quest to find a place of food freedom? And can they, only children, help change the world?

Excerpt

Clare walked faster, clutching the tiny packet to her chest. The sound of the footsteps behind kept pace. She darted down an alley she knew well—turning right, then left, then right again. Standing still, her back against the wall, she listened. The footsteps had not followed her; she had lost them.
Twenty minutes later and safe in the apartment, she met with her co-conspirators: Dante, her seven-year-old brother, and Lily, her best friend.
“I have something to show you, but you have to promise not to tell.”
“We promise.”
Holding out her closed fist, she whispered, “What I have here will change the world.”
Dante’s eyes widened. “It’s so small.”
“It may be small now,” she told him, “but what I have in my hand will get bigger. It will grow and make more.”
“What is it?” Lily asked.
“Is it magic?” asked Dante.
She opened her hand.

That Girl, Darcy: A Pride and Prejudice Story by James Ramos

IT IS A TRUTH UNIVERSALLY ACKNOWLEDGED that geeky guys never get to date the pretty girls with permanent scowls.

To Elliott Bennett, life is simple. It’s all parties, skateboarding, and arguing over who would win in a fight between Hulk and Superman with his friends. It’s his senior year, and he wants nothing more than to soak up his final year of freedom before real life begins.

That is, until Darcy Fitzwilliam and her best friend Bridget move in to the only mansion in the neighborhood. When Elliott meets Darcy at a party, he finds out that she isn’t into skateboarding (which he lives for), she hates science fiction (which he loves), and she thinks his friends are a pack of morons (which, honestly, might be half true)—and yet, there’s something irritatingly intriguing about her.

When Elliott’s cousin Jake starts to date her friend Bridget, it complicates Elliott’s plans to ignore the scowling Darcy for the rest of the year. Why is Darcy so . . . ugh? Elliott doesn’t know, but for some reason, is determined to find out—even if she doesn’t know the difference between Star Trek and Star Wars.

The gorgeous, Christmassy feel-good follow up to the Summer best-seller ‘From Italy With Love’.

Just until Christmas…

That’s what Paris socialite Siena Browne-Martin keeps telling herself. She’ll stay with her estranged sister, Laurie, just until Christmas. Running away from the chateaux to escape her hot-tempered fiancé Yves’s wrath, may not have been the most rational decision. But Laurie had always said that Siena had a room at the cottage and right now she really needed it.

But arriving at the airport to be greeted by the grumpiest, most brooding—and dangerously gorgeous—man Siena has ever met, is not what she expected. And learning that Laurie isn’t living at the cottage anymore is even more of a surprise. Now Siena is stuck rooming with sullen Jason Landon, which is definitely not in the plan! Especially when his protective nature and quiet compassion threatens to ignite something in Siena that she never knew existed…

For Jason, Christmas can’t come soon enough. This pampered Parisian princess is the last person he wants to share his house with—he knows the destruction high-maintenance gold-diggers can cause and he’s never going there again. But Jason soon realises that there’s more to his unexpected house guest than meets the eye and suddenly Siena staying just until Christmas doesn’t seem like long enough…

This Christmas, fly to Paris with Siena and Jason and experience the magic of the holiday season in From Paris With Love This Christmas by dazzling contemporary romance author Jules Wake!

Siena is a rich up and coming Parisien who hasn’t seen her sister in years. She’s running from an uncertain future and finds herself being picked up at the airport by the most grumpy driver she’s ever met. Only, he’s not just a driver, he’s her housemate. What starts off as a trip to escape turns into an opportunity to start over in England. Siena needs to find a job, pursue her dreams of being a fashion designer and mend relationships long neglected.

The most stunning parts of the book are set in Paris. I wish more of England could have been fleshed out in the same manner. This is an adult read as there is a lot of swearing. In fact, so much so that it turned me off. I enjoyed the character arc both Siena and Jason go through and the message of escaping abuse for a more healthy relationship. I also loved the richness of each friend she encounters and the resolution.  Thanks to Netgalley and HarperImpulse for the review copy!

Content- adult, highlight to view: domestic violence, sex, swearing.

About the Author

Jules’ earliest known declaration that she planned to be a writer came at the age of ten. Unfortunately the urge to actually get her backside into gear and write a book didn’t revisit her for quite some time after that.

After a twenty year career in the glamorous world of PR, working on luxury brands, she switched profession to give her more time and energy to write. By day she works in a junior school and by night writes romantic comedy and happy ever after stories which are the sort of books she’s always enjoyed reading.

Her debut novel, Talk to Me, was published by Choc Lit in 2014, and her second, From Italy With Love, published by HarperImpulse was released earlier this year in May and reached the top of the Amazon Kindle Charts. Her third novel, From Paris With Love This Christmas, published by HarperImpulse is now available as an ebook and the paperback will be published on 3rd December.

France, 1944: Nobody expects Peter Eddy to survive his first commando mission—to retrieve a code book stolen by the Nazis—so when he does come back alive, his success is rewarded with an even more daunting assignment. Partnered with French Resistance leader Jacques Olivier, Peter must identify which of three Allied contacts in Calais is a double agent and use the traitor to help implement a strategic Allied diversion that might win the war. But what appears to be a clean assignment soon turns disastrous, and even the aid of Jacques and his sister Genevieve can’t prevent a Gestapo triumph. In the safety of England, Genevieve hopes to find purpose as a nurse—all the while unaware that the Gestapo still seeks the woman who slipped through their grasp. When she is called upon to resume a life of danger as a French spy, will her desire to prove herself be her downfall?
Recruited by an elite special-ops team intent on thwarting the Nazis, Peter finds himself engaged in a personal battle as well—there is a traitor among his comrades. Deep in the Carpathian Mountains, Peter combats an unknown foe. The stakes are high as he fights to save the lives of his teammates.

When Peter Eddy and his commando team inadvertently upset the Soviets during their most recent mission, they never imagined the diplomatic nightmares that would ensue. They have one chance to redeem themselves: tasked with destroying a bridge in Nazi-occupied Bosnia, Peter and his war-weary team reluctantly agree to drop behind enemy lines. The assignment should be a simple one—were it not for the fact that they are being deployed on a suicide mission.
Genevieve Olivier is devastated by the news of Peter’s disappearance. After all they’ve endured in this war, the determined OSS worker is unwilling to simply let go of the man she hopes to spend her life with. Desperate for information, her work as a courier soon escalates into a counterintelligence duel with a Fascist assassin—and Genevieve is his newest target . . .

Praise for Espionage, Sworn Enemy, and Deadly Alliance:
This historical fiction WWII series is amazing! Seriously tense action, intrigue, death-defying danger, strong characters, and even a hint of romance. Sowards really does her research and makes readers feel as if they are right in the middle of the action in different settings throughout war-torn Europe. These aren’t your normal WWII books; they are much better.
~Charissa Stastny, author of the Bending Willow Trilogy

A.L. Sowards is a master at telling sides of stories from history that aren’t overdone or commonly shared. These books took me on an unexpected journey and they each brought up issues that I hadn’t really thought about before. I loved learning information about this time period, while being thoroughly entertained by the events happening to some beloved characters.
~Katie, blogger at Katie’s Clean Book Collection

A.L. Sowards has been a favorite author of mine for years. I was enraptured by the first book in her World War II series, Espionage, and fell more in love with the characters with each book. Her knowledge of World War II is unreal and the way she weaves the historical aspects in is so gripping I could hardly set these books down. I would highly recommend this series, especially if you’re a fan of historical fiction.

~Cami Checketts, Author of Shadows in the Curtain

Intrigue, horror, and romance all wrapped up in this brilliant WWII trilogy. A.L Sowards did an amazing job at bringing the time period to life for me. I highly recommend all three books in the Espionage series.

Breview

This is a fun anthology that includes 5 stories all set in the same town and store with the same characters. My favorite was the first, The Candy Counter Heiress by Lucy McConnell. I did have to take a break three stories in and put down the book for a while because the overlap was too much. But, once I picked it back up it was smooth sailing! You will be taken back to simpler times and the small town of Echo Ridge with a soda fountain and family owned department store. The Parley’s Way reference was fun as we have a street named the same in my state. Worth the 99 cents and great for the upcoming Christmas snowy season.

Miracle Maker: A Christmas Tale – It all starts with one little seed of love.

”The Miracle Maker is coming!”

Everyone in the tiny hamlet is excited when they hear the news that the renowned man of wonders is coming to their village. But the humble traveler who appears isn’t what anyone expected. They were looking forward to someone magnificent who would change their lives.

But it seems this man can barely take care of himself, let alone fulfill the dreams of others. However, miracles can come in all shapes and sizes-and sometimes from unexpected places.

We sat down and watched Miracle Maker as a family yesterday, just in time for today’s release date. All of my children enjoyed it and mom shed a few tears at the sweet message of hope. It’s a Christmas tale of planting seeds for a later harvest, softening bitter hearts and how one person can make a difference. My children noticed the Charles Dickens Scrooge parallels. They have seen a few other movies by Mainstay productions and recognized many of the cast members from last year’s Christmas Dragon. Their suggestions would be to reach out and include a few more new actors and be careful of costuming. My son was bothered that a few of the costumes looked “modern.”

Would we recommend buying or gifting this movie? Absolutely! It is heart warming and simple and just in time for the Holidays.

Thanks so much to Michelle Moore for the screening opportunity. Highly recommended as a clean movie for the whole family.

 About the Series

Uncovering-Cobbogoth

Norah Lukens needs to uncover the truth about the fabled lost city of Cobbogoth. After her archaeologist uncle’s murder, Norah is asked to translate his old research journal for evidence and discovers that his murder was a cover-up for something far more sinister.

When she turns to neighbor and only friend James Riley for help, she realizes that not only is their bitter-sweet past haunting her every step, but James is keeping dangerous secrets. Can Norah discover what they are before its too late to share her own.

LemorianCrest_FC_Blue-2-683x1024

After being raised from infancy in Boston, Mass., Noria (a.k.a Norah Lukens) has no idea what to expect upon entering New Cobbogoth, where she never would have guessed that paths of light can make you vanish; doors can lead to realms both near and far; myths and legends are actual history; a mere kiss can seal two souls as one; and, of course, a stone is never “just a stone.” Her Uncle Jack’s stories never could have prepared her for the magical and dangerous place her native realm is turning out to be.

When the Gihara’s promises begin to crumble, her best friend and soul-mate Jamus (a.k.a. James Riley) is in more danger than ever. Then when his father Lylend abandons her to search for an ancient relic called The Lemorian Crest and she is taken captive by the very people she’s risked everything to save, Noria begins to lose faith in the Cobbogothian gods and the mission they sent her home to accomplish.

Only when a series of new friendships and loyalties are forged in the most peculiar of places, does Noria dare hope again. Hope for Jamus’ safety, for their future together, and for the survival of the entire Cobbogothian race.

Author Interview

Tell us about your interest in rocks and hidden civilizations

I’ve been interested in rocks since I was around three and my big sisters told me that if I buried a piece of coal in my backyard, then one day it would become a diamond. Of course, they failed to tell me that it would take thousands of years (and then some) for the coal to become that diamond. But alas, there was something magical about the idea, and stones became magical in my imagination from then on.

For example, when I was around five or six, my mom let me pal around with a hammer in search of “diamonds,” in the yard. One time, after busting a particularly ugly rock open, I found a geod, so that was cool. Mostly though, I just liked to collect pretty colored pebbles, and then use my hammer to smash them up into powder. I used my “pebble dust” for healing potions when we played war and similarly deadly games with the neighborhood kids.

As far as my interest in hidden civilizations goes, I’ve always been fascinated with the legends of the lost city of Atlantis and the Hyperborean. Who hasn’t, right? In the bible—particularly Isaiah—there are prophecies that talk about the lost ten tribes of Isreal returning from the north. I have some interesting family folklore that interprets “lost” and “North” to mean that the ten tribes are actually literally living somewhere like the North Pole waiting for God to command them to return. (I personally don’t believe this very literal interpretation of this particular prophecy, but as a kid, it sure was fun fodder for an epic fantasy story.)

I also love anything mysterious and unexplained—like Machu Picchu or Elderado. I love watching Ancient Aliens—mostly because of that one doctor’s wild hair (I mean, seriously? He has the “mad scientist” look down)—but also because of the ancient mysteries there, and the idea of hidden alien races living among us at one time. I even secretly suspect that a race of mermaids, in one form or another, actually existed—you know, like in the movie The Abyss. Hey! Maybe that’s what really happened to Atlantis.

All right, I’m really just messing with you about the mermaids, but there is a mermaid legend in almost every civilizations’ mythology. Without channels of mass communication like we have today, how could that be possible if there wasn’t at least something real to base it on.

I’m just sayin’ . . .

It was released in May 2014 through Cedar Fort Publishing. Book 2 in the series, The Lemorian Crest will be released in Summer 2015.

Clark loves running, mythology, singing while playing the guitar, herbal tea, escaping into imaginary worlds, and being with her peeps. Like her heroine Norah, she also kind of believes that trees might have souls, but must clarify that she has never hugged a tree. The closest she has ever come to that kind of bizarre behavior was the time she hugged the pillars outside Harry Potter Land. Which, all things considered, is not bizarre at all if one takes into account how exquisitely happy she was to finally be there.

North for Christmas Blog Tour and Breview

North for Christmas blog tour GREEN
Have you ever known exactly what you wanted for Christmas? As a child, you may have written a letter to Santa, made a wish upon a star, or locked your dream away in your heart afraid that it might not come true if you so much as whispered it out loud. Even as adults, Christmas wishes carry a magic that can’t be explained.
ICovern North for Christmas, Ruby Jeavon certainly has her heart set on an engagement. It’s the first step in creating the family she’s always wanted. But things go slightly off course and instead of flying to Italy with her boyfriend, Ruby heads out of town to work as an elf in Nashville. Even though she’s far away from her dream, she’s about to discover the magic of a Nashville Christmas through the eyes of North Foxwell, her fellow elf and a Christmas expert. Even though North struggles with his own Christmas ghosts, Ruby manages to bring new light to his life. Can Ruby let go of her dream to find what her heart truly desires? Only time–at the North Pole–will tell.

After Ruby’s wealthy mother donates their extra funds to yet another charity, Ruby’s forced to work as a mall elf to earn enough to go to Italy with her boyfriend. But everything changes when Ruby meets North, a lawyer-turned-elf, who seems to know exactly what Ruby really wants this Christmas. This sweet contemporary holiday romance novel is perfect for the book lovers on your Christmas list.

“I had Sheri gather the information on a flight to Italy, the hotel, and ski passes. I’m sorry, dear. It costs too much. I have other obligations this time of year.”
Ruby’s heart sank.
So much for getting engaged at the bottom of the Alps.

Ruby knows her CEO mother really could afford to send her to Europe for Christmas. But instead Ruby’s stuck in Tennessee working as a Christmas elf so she can pay for the trip herself. Wrangling whiny kids at the mall certainly isn’t the holiday she had in mind. But things start to get interesting when Ruby meets North–a lawyer-turned-elf, who might be able to grant Ruby’s real Christmas wish.

This charming holiday romance is perfect for the book lovers on your list! Sweet and full of surprises, it’ll bring a little Christmas cheer to your bookshelves all year long!

Breview

What a cute book! Absolutely full of Holiday Cheer. I loved the progress that both Ruby and North make along the way. They both have flaws and weaknesses that need some work and both are thrust into the perfect situation to improve. Santa is not perfect, he’s goofed up as well, and there is an underlying message of forgiveness, healing. I usually don;t re-read Christmas books, but this is one I may re-visit. Dymock presents the perfect unfolding of romance without the cheesiness, and it is clean. Add this to your wish list this holiday!

You can pick up your copy of North for Christmas at your local book store, iTunes, Barns and Noble, or from Amazon.
