I ordered this kit online from Sephora for Christmas looking for a light scent. I love roller ball perfumes and smaller sizes that can easily fit into a purse. The only problem was, once I got the kit I didn’t like them. They smell artificial and the scents were too heavy, like overpowering laundry detergent and fabric softener.
I would definitely recommend going into the store and trying these out before jumping into the sample kit. At $17.00 it was a bit pricey to not like even one of the bottles.

The basic drive to discover who we are and where we come from is at the core of this 10-part PBS series Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the 12th series from Professor Gates. Continuing on the quest begun in his previous projects, African American Lives, African American Lives 2 and Faces of America, Gates finds new ways to, as he says, "get into the DNA of American culture." He takes viewers along for the journey with one celebrity pair bound together by an intimate, sometimes hidden link. And he treks through layers of ancestral history to uncover the secrets and surprises of their family trees.
Gates' guest pairings include...
- Award-winning husband-and-wife actors Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, who are revealed to be distant cousins;
- New Orleans jazz masters and close friends Harry Connick, Jr. and Branford Marsalis, whose European immigrant ancestors made very different choices in the slave-era South;
- Spiritual leaders Angela Buchdahl, Yasir Qadhi and Rick Warren, whose ancestors' paths to America were shaped by religious convictions; and
- Education superstar Geoffrey Canada and media legend Barbara Walters, who both rediscover family histories long obscured by forgotten name changes.
Gates shares the findings with each guest and travels with them as they process what they've learned. He accompanies musician John Legend to a rock concert, goes backstage on Broadway with Samuel L. Jackson, joins Newark, New Jersey Mayor Cory Booker as he reveals the root-seeking results to his parents, and trails Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Geoffrey Canada to memorable family reunions.
The series searches through several branches of the American past, leaving audiences all the more curious about their own background and eager to unearth their own family roots.
This DVD features subtitles in English (SDH)
I’ve spent the last two months watching episodes of Who Do You Think You Are?, so when I heard there was another genealogical series, this one put out by PBS, I wanted to give it a try. My family purchased the 3 disk series for me off of Amazon. I sat down to watch seasons 1 & 2 in marathon fashion. I enjoyed the narrator Henry Louis Gates, Jr. He is charming and well educated. However, about five episodes in, I started noticing a heavy handed slavery theme. It seems to me there is a definite political message over portrayed in each person’s family tree.
Gates wanted to track down any ancestor of each guest that owned slaves or participated in the civil war. At first, it was interesting, but then it got to be too much. Particularly political for me was the episode with Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon. On previous shows, many ordinary black citizens volunteered to have their ethnicity tested by 23and me. They were each asked to estimate in advance how African American, Native American or European they thought they really are. In this instance, the show took the 23andme DNA results folders into a High School classroom. Gates then proceeded to teach the students about the founding fathers and how they owned slaves. I was not happy about the indoctrination and revisionist history theme, as well as having minors participate in discussing their DNA testing results on the spot in front of their peers at school. This was way over the top. I was watching the series with my family and as a mother, I would not want this happening in an every day classroom in America.
There is a strong message of “things are not what they seem” and color lines are blurry. Good message, but very persistent delivery. Overall, interesting look at paper trail and genetic genealogy, but I would not recommend watching the discs back to back. Watch them one at a time 🙂
Content: mild swearing “bleeped out”, civil war and civil rights violence and blood
My favorite episode thus far is one that is still available online.
Decoding Our Past Through DNA… Secrets encoded in their genomes challenge these guests’ ideas about their families’ histories and their identities today. This episode features Jessica Alba, Anderson Cooper, Valerie Jarrett, Governor Deval Patrick and more.Premiered November 25, 2014. Go online and watch this one before it expires. I cried! Inspiring civil rights message and great discussion of unraveling family secrets through DNA testing.

The smoldering fireplace illuminates the cozy library, and it is here my family retires after dinner. I find a place on the sofa and listen to crackling whispers from the hearth. Papa relieves the shelf of his newest book and then sits casually in his favorite chair. It is quite common for our family to spend evenings in such a way. Most nights, my father will entertain us by reading a few chapters, and I become carried away by his voice. Where shall we travel tonight?
A tray lined with sweet biscuits sits beside me. Although I am tempted, I am able to ignore them and reach for my parchment instead. After showing Mary my latest drawings, I am anxious to design a new gown for her. I sketch my ideas as I wait for Papa to begin his tale. I sigh with contentment beholden in the knowledge that Mr. Andrew has some business to which he must attend. I will not have to endure his unnerving presence for the remainder of the evening.
My father’s animated story begins with faraway kingdoms, and I am immediately swept away. He is reading from the fifth page when an unwelcome interruption edges into the room. Without looking up from my drawing, I feel his presence. Although he has entered the room, Mr. Andrew has failed to dissolve the web of Papa’s story weaving, and for that I am grateful. It does not take long for Mr. Andrew to take his place by my side. My body involuntarily edges away from him, and I am pressed against the sofa’s arm. I instinctively reach for a biscuit and nibble at it. My concentration is locked on my sketches, but I can sense Mr. Andrew’s gaze fall upon me.
“Miss Emma, you seem to be out of sorts. Are you ill?” he whispers in my direction.
“I am fine.”
“Your drawings are quite nice. I did not realize you were an artist.” He peers over my shoulder, and my hand slaps atop my drawing in a most protective manner.
My free hand eagerly searches for a proper dessert. This time it is a raspberry tart, and juice from its berries sweetens my lips. I am lost for a moment in its splendor. In fact, I am barely aware that Mr. Andrew is even here, sitting beside me with his arm brushing against mine.
“That will be all for now. I must retire to my quarters,” says Papa as he marks his page and shuts the book. I am utterly disappointed by the abrupt halt to his reading and am quite certain I will not be able to rest my mind until I know the fate of the mighty heroine.
When the room clears, and I find I am left alone, I cautiously approach the closed book. With cautious fingertips, I open it to the saved page and read what is to come. After flipping a few more pages, I am relieved to find the heroine will prevail through her hardships. The book rests still on top of Papa’s side table just as it had been only moments before. Feeling quite satisfied, I pivot to leave. To my utter dismay, I am not alone. Mr. Andrew is still here, resting against the doorframe.
I received this book for free from Cedar Fort in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
In Télesphore, the glowing color of a person’s palm determines their place in society, and touching hands with another mixes the colors permanently. When sixteen-year-old Bruno accidentally kills a royal soldier, he goes from favored to fugitive. Now Bruno's only chance at survival is to become someone else. That means a haircut, a change of wardrobe, and most important, getting rid of his once cherished Blue. Now he’s visiting parts of town he never knew existed, and making friends with people he would've crossed the street to avoid only weeks ago. At the last minute, Bruno’s parents arrange a deal to clear his name and get his life back. All Bruno has to do is abandon those in the Red slums that look to him as a leader and let an innocent Green boy die in his place.
My breview:
There is a lot going on in this this book! I jumped in reading thinking surely I’d missed book one. The first page starts off right in the middle of a dystopian world with a bang. Readers are not spoon fed with any world building or background. It is full speed ahead. I was a bit taken aback trying to figure out just what the world was like and how the powers of the character’s fires worked. Great book for older teen boys.
Themes are discrimination and caste systems, judging and compassion.
YA, dystopian, teenage boy MC
Content: there is a quite a bit of violence in the beginning scene.
RC (Really Cool) Hancock began his writing career with a story about a dead cat which his second grade teacher thought was brilliant. Convincing others of his literary genius has taken longer than expected, but along the road he has acquired a lovely wife, four entertaining ankle-biters (who, thankfully, look more like their mother), and a degree from BYU in Recreational Management & Youth Leadership (which means he’s really good at having fun.) An Uncommon Blue is his first novel.
