Angela Corbett Eternal Starling Launch Party

08 Dec, 2011 by in Heather Gardner Photography 13 comments

Last night author Angela Corbett launched her book Eternal Starling at the King’s English book store in Salt Lake City. The Children’s Room was packed to full capacity and by the time I got there we were lined up standing outside. She had cake pops, candy bars and m&m cookies for treats as well as a raffle for signed books, bags and jewelry. Spotted in the huge audience were authors Brodi Ashton Everneath and Lani WoodlandIndelible, as well as fellow book bloggers from LDSWBR and CubicleBlindnes. Congrats Angie!

The surreal part for me was seeing the author photo I took for her printed on the back dust jacket, on a poster outside the book shop and on shelves in the store. Thanks you so much to Lani and Angela for making one of my dreams come true! Click here to visit the official Heather Gardner photography website or view all Angela’s author photos here.

Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath, where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Now she’s returned- to her old life, her family, her friends- before being banished back to the underworld… this time forever.

So here’s the deal, if you’re looking for a happy go lucky sunny walk in the park Everneath is quite the opposite. It’s a real hard look at the true to life feelings of a teen who has returned to the earth as a shell of the girl she once was. She’s lost her mother in a drink driving accident and in a moment of grief made a choice which alters her path for the next hundred years to eternity. If you know the author, Brodi Ashton, she is a hilarious human with a sassy sense of humor, but writing Everneath she followed a voice much unlike her own. Brodi says ” My book, EVERNEATH?: not funny. Not hardy har har funny. Sometimes it can be funny in a “Can you believe there’s So. Much. Death?” kind of way. Other times it’s funny in a “OMG she is so screwed! lol” kind of way. Have you ever had a story call to you that scares you because you don’t think you can write it? I say… write it! I did.” She has some guts people!

Thanks to Brodi and Windy Aphayrath for putting together a local ARC tour and giving us a sneak peek!

Brodi Ashton Author Bio- “Because of two parents who were Greek myth geeks, I grew up thinking the latest fashion trends were inspired by Aphrodite, and a good conversational opener was, “So, which mythological character do you most resemble?” Despite these social shortcomings, I found a great husband who’s always my first reader. We live in Utah with our two young boys, who still have no idea why I’m at the computer all the time.
I received a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Utah and a Master’s degree in International Relations from the London School of Economics.
I write Young Adult novels. I eat cinnamon bears. I love me some Diet Coke. My debut book EVERNEATH (the first in a trilogy) comes out January 24, 2012 with Balzer and Bray (HarperCollins).”

Everneath is a unique take on the ancient tale of Persephone and Hades with a dash of Egyptian mythology. Main heroine Nikki has just spent 100 years in the Everneath with bad boy Cole who feeds off of her life essence. At the end of her term she chooses to return to the surface for the last time. Six months to say goodbye to her family and six months to reconcile her feelings with Jack, the only bit of memory she was able to retain in the underworld. His face kept her alive while she endured her own personal hell. And now the challenge for Nikki is overcoming her emaciated sense of hopelessness to make the choice between becoming an Everliving Queen at Cole’s side or anchoring to the hope of Jack.  Told in both present and past tense, Everneath explores addiction, co dependence, parental trust, grief and the ultimate redeeming power of love. The ending is one heck of a cliffhanger, so prepare yourselves to be invested for a trilogy. Everneath is haunting, intelligent and engaging. Bravo to Brodi for being so brave. Utah residents will love the Park City setting. An awesome and unique debut! And the cover…my very favorite of 2012.As Nikki’s time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she’s forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole’s…Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there’s a problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he’ll do whatever it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen. She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can’t find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.

For months part-angel Clara Gardner trained to face the raging forest fire from her visions and rescue the alluring and mysterious Christian Prescott from the blaze. But nothing could prepare her for the fateful decisions she would be forced to make that day, or the startling revelation that her purpose—the task she was put on earth to accomplish—is not as straightforward as she thought. Now, torn between her increasingly complicated feelings for Christian and her love for her boyfriend, Tucker, Clara struggles to make sense of what she was supposed to do the day of the fire. And, as she is drawn further into the world of part angels and the growing conflict between White Wings and Black Wings, Clara learns of the terrifying new reality that she must face: Someone close to her will die in a matter of months. With her future uncertain, the only thing Clara knows for sure is that the fire was just the beginning.

Described by Richelle Mead as “utterly captivating,” Unearthly received outstanding reviews, garnered accolades from New York Times bestselling authors, and was named an Indie Next Pick. In this heart-wrenching sequel, Cynthia Hand expertly captures the all-consuming joy of first love—and the agony of loss. This beautifully woven tale will appeal to fans of Lauren Kate, Becca Fitzpatrick, and Aprilynne Pike.

Cynthia Hand’s debut novel Unearthly made my best of 2011 list this year and it looks like Hallowed will be on the my BIR list for 2012. I love this series! Hallowed picks up right where Unearthly left off, and had I a chance to do it over, I would re-read book one before picking up book two. I remembered the plot and characters well, but there are so many little nuances in this installment that you will miss if it’s been awhile. Clara’s vision has come to a close and now she is having dreams as well as an overwhelming sense of sorrow. She’s made her choice clear between Tucker and Christian but that choice may be putting those she loves in danger.

Hallowed is a much more emotionally driven novel with less action than book one, but I soaked up every minute. So much so that I couldn’t pick up another read for a while.  I wanted to fill in the blanks on some things so I actually went back and re-read most of Unearthly when I was finished. We see all the same people in book two, but much less of Tucker’s sister Wendy and her boyfriend Jason. Also, Clara’s brother Jeffrey is a mystery. The one character I have not been able to connect with at all is Angela. So I’m gearing up for more of her in book three.

I had many questions answered about who and what the angel bloods are, about Clara’s upbringing and why her mother has held so many secrets. But the best part of Hallowed by far are the two boys Tucker and Christan. Cynthia Hand knows how to write realistic, amazingly supportive, perfect heroes each in their own way. They are completely different, but each brings out a good side in Clara. So many noteworthy scenes with them both in Hallowed- including a ski trip, fishing, and learning to use glory. Both boys grew on me more than they had in book one. I really didn’t think that would be possible!

Readers will be thrown for a loop with some of the plot twists and will laugh out loud as Hand pokes fun at Twilight stalkerish behaviors and love triangles (though they are used in this book.) The pace of Hallowed is slower but never drags and the tone a little more heavy as Clara is dealing with so many swirling emotions she is picking up from other people and non-people. Some of the content is better suited for an older teens since there are a few heavy make out, a partially undressed scene in a bedroom, and mild violence. No sex or swearing.

I highly recommend both Unearthly and Hallowed. If you are a fan of all things paranormal including angel mythology and the perfect swoon worthy male characters this is the series for you! I’m having a hard time moving on to another book because they influenced me so much. So, if you haven’t read them yet, run and pick up Unearthly today!

About the author– Cynthia Hand grew up in southeast Idaho (very near the Wyoming border). Currently she lives in southern California with her husband and two small children. She teaches courses in creative writing at Pepperdine University. Unearthly, her debut YA novel, was published by HarperTeen in January 2011, out in paperback on 11-1-11. The sequel, Hallowed, will be released on January 17.

Carving Angels Blog Tour & Giveaway

Fire and Ice is today’s stop on the Carving Angels blog tour hosted by Cedar Fort books.
Carving Angels
by Diane Stringham Tolley
Hardcover, 128 pages
Published September 8, 2011
by Cedar Fort, Inc
ISBN  1599559447
Source: Publisher
Rating: 4 Stars
Papa Adam, the North Pole’s oldest elf and Santa’s former chief carver, has given up. Blind, frail, and feeling useless, he counts the minutes in every day as he waits to die — until his youngest granddaughter challenges him to carve again. Together they prove that the most beautiful creations can come from the most unlikely sources and with the right love and encouragement, anything is possible.
This is a sweet Christmas story that tells more than just the tale of Santa and his elves. It tells of the power of love and belief to bring light and joy into the lives of another. Sweet Amy (Papa Adam’s youngest grandchild) brings her blind grandfather a block of wood and asks him to make her a carving like he had made for the other grandchildren. At first Adam says no, but Amy’s belief in him inspires him to take his tools out of their dusty box and try. What results is more than just beautiful carvings, but the development of a beautiful relationship between Papa Adam and his sweet, young granddaughter, Amy.
What I love about this book is it’s simplicity. As the holidays arrive, schedules become busy and time is in short supply. Reading for pleasure (as opposed to a careful and complete perusal of the sale ads and recipe books) can often be pushed to the backburner. This sweet story is a very quick and uplifting; certain to put you in the Christmas mood.

Book Review- Allegiance by Cayla Kluver

Legacy #2

Only I saw Narian for who he truly was: a young man with courage and an independent mind, and made to pay for what was outside his control. He couldn’t help his past any more than he could help the way those intense, deep-blue eyes pierced me and held me captive.

An eighteen-year-old queen in love with the enemy as their countries pass the point of no return…

Bound to a man she cannot love, Queen Alera of Hytanica must forget Narian, the young man who holds her heart. For Narian is destined to conquer Hytanica at the behest of his master, the powerful magic-user known as the Overlord. Alera doesn’t truly believe Narian will fight against Hytanica-until Cokyrian troops attack with Narian commanding the charge.

Faced with the greatest betrayal a heart can know, Alera must set aside personal feelings and lead her kingdom through its darkest time. And when all hope, will and courage seem lost, she must find strength and remember that even the blackest night must have a dawn….

I have to admit I requested Allegiance from NetGalley without realizing there was a book one to the series, so I’m sure my impressions will be different than others who are familiar with Legacy. The cover and book description pulled me in! Fans of the Girl of Fire and Thorns, Shannon Hale’s Books of Bayern or Maria V Snyder’s Study Series will enjoy this one. It’s a mix of historical YA fiction and fantasy. The author published the first at age 17- holy moly folks!  I was impressed after reading her interview and am sure the writing will continue to get even better as she matures.

Allegiance starts out with Alera and Steldor being newly married an crowned King/ Queen of Hytanica. It is painfully obvious that Alera is still in love with someone else and does not welcome the marriage in any way. To be honest since Narian, her true love barely shows up in this installment and I didn’t know the back story I had a hard time empathizing. I was disappointed in Alera’s hardness toward Stledor, even when human empathy would dictate something else. What little interactions they did have I found to be the most fascinating parts of the book. There is lively batner and tension which added to the personality of the plot. I sympathized with Steldor and think he was acting as any other 22 year old man placed in charge of a kingdom would act. He is passionate and though has temper, I could see he was truly trying his best to be patient with Alera’s complete shunning. When he becomes badly injured Alera just stands by…WHA!?

There is very strong character development in Allegiance. I particularly liked Canaan and London. The women seemed to be purely victims which did not bode well with me. The only exception being Alera and the High Priestess, neither of which I connected with. I couldn’t sympathize or agree with the way things turned out.

But bottom line….Did I enjoy the book? You bet! The cover is goregous, the writing and the depth of character were spot on. I can’t wait to read book three, Sacrifice. I’m hoping Steldor gets some reward and that I see some of why Alera is so head over heels with Narian. There is some heavy war related violence and talk of sex between husband and wife, though not explicit. The tone becomes a little dark in places, so may be best for 14 and older. Thanks so much to Harlequin Teen for the sneak peek!

Book Review- Chime by Franny Billingsley

Chime

4 stars

Before Briony’s stepmother died, she made sure Briony blamed herself for all the family’s hardships. Now Briony has worn her guilt for so long it’s become a second skin. She often escapes to the swamp, where she tells stories to the Old Ones, the spirits who haunt the marshes. But only witches can see the Old Ones, and in her village, witches are sentenced to death. Briony lives in fear her secret will be found out, even as she believes she deserves the worst kind of punishment.

Then Eldric comes along with his golden lion eyes and mane of tawny hair. He’s as natural as the sun, and treats her as if she’s extraordinary. And everything starts to change. As many secrets as Briony has been holding, there are secrets even she doesn’t know.

Chime is one of the most interesting, oddest books I’ve ever read. It took me a good while to get used to the dialogue that main protagonist Briony carries on between others and herself as well as the quirky little side traits of each supporting character. But by the end I was impressed by the creative and rich storytelling. The style feels like a mix of bedtime stories and children’s folklore set in Victorian England near an eery swamp.  It’s narrated by Briony who is the Parishioner’s daughter as she grapples with hating herself and the fact that she’s a witch. She has spent most of her young adult life blaming herself for her step-mother’s death, her sister’s mental incapacity and her unnatural ability to see the Old Ones.

Along comes Eldric, the Alehouse owner’s son returning home after a failed attempt at the University in London to live with Briony, her twin sister Rose and their father. Briony is expecting a child, when in actuality Eldric is a man of 22 who reminds her of a lion. The friendship between the two of them unfolds in a charming way and Eldric is a perfect gentleman (which is why the last chapter of the book really threw me for a loop and led me to some trouble suspending disbelief.) I truly enjoyed Eldric. As a mother of autistic children I loved the way author Franny Billingsley portrayed Briony’s sister Rose as well as the fidgets Eldric is always carrying and creating in his hands. The setting and world building is fascinating as it was to see fairy tale creatures like Brownies, the buggy mun and mucky face come to life for Briony. Quite honestly this book is brilliant. Once you get a sense of the true meaning behind Briony’s actions in the end, it leaves you going back through the entire plot to unravel what happened. If you enjoyed The Near Witch by Victoria Schwab you’ll like Chime. Now I’m curious to read more of what Franny Billingsley has to offer!

Content: mild swearing, moderate violence, discussion of the effects of drugs and drinking, attempted sexual assault. For ages 16 or older.

Hannah died the night she was born. The new star’s light brought her back to life, but left her stricken with palsy. Sariah, Hannah’s mother, believes Hannah can be healed, if only she can find the Savior. Miracle of the Christmas Star is a tender story of love, faith and endurance that will touch your heart and remind you why miracles happen.
Such a heartbreaking and uplifting story of love, sacrifice and miracles. Sariah is a woman of faith who sacrifices for her little family. Her daughter, Hannah, is miraculously saved when the light of the new star shines on her after being born dead.  But her life is not a normal one. She is stricken with palsy and cannot do anything for herself. She is never able to walk on her own and must be spoon fed. Sariah’s husband, Joshua is a wonderful support and they have a true, strong love for both each other and their daughter. Sariah and Joshua hear of a Savior who was born on the same night their sweet Hannah was born, and they believe that he can heal their daughter. Sariah begins a decades long search for for the savior.
Sariah’s faith is an inspiration to me. I struggle daily to do the things that I need to for my family, who are all well and whole (for the most part). The challenges that I deal with on a daily basis seem so big at times, but then I read stories of faith like this one (even though it is fictional) and I am inspired to try a little harder; to put more faith in God.
If you are looking for a book to inspire you this Christmas Season, this is a great selection. (Warning, read this book with a package of tissues by your side, you are certain to need them).
