Paranormalcy Signing and Giveaway

13 Sep, 2010 by in book giveaway, paranormalcy, the king's english 6 comments

Happy Monday everybody! I have been reading up a storm and have a ton of reviews to write but first a post about the weekend. Saturday I went to the Paranormalcy book signing at the King’s English bookstore with Kiersten White. She is originally from Utah so it was fun to have her introduce some of her friends from her very own High school days, two of whom inspired a scene from Paranormalcy about being blond and needing to wear mascara. During the question and answer session we learned:
  • Paranormalcy was not the first book she pitched. She wrote another which got rejected over and over before going back to re-edit and submit Paranormalcy. If at first you don’t succeed writers try try again.
  • She loves reading contemporary YA and middle grade books
  • Supernaturally is the name of book #2 in the series. Due to be released around April of next year. It’s about Evie and life where she gets a lot of the things she’s always wanted but realizes life is still hard. We’ll learn a lot about Evie’s past and enter the faerie realms. A new character named Jack is introduced, Kiersten’s all -time character to write
  • Kiersten draws many of her paranormal creatures from traditional folklore. One of her favorites is the hag who sits on people’s chests and makes it so they can’t wake up or drags them into the water. She also loves the Pixies and kelpies of European mythology
  • You’ll never see a love triangle in her books. She did not intend Paranormalcy to be a love triangle. She also thinks as a storyteller it’s important to have a resolution and ending to each of her books.

Kiersten has a super fun and bubbly personality. It was so fun to meet her and she even tweeted all of us who came to thank us.

There were at least 20 Utah authors including Emily Wing Smith, Sheralynn Pratt, Bree Despain, Nichole Giles in attendance. And we spotted two other Utah book bloggers : Cranberryfries and Emsreadingroom. Thanks to The Kings English for having such well planned events!

Just for our blog followers (old and new) we are giving away an author signed hardback copy of Paranormalcy to U.S. readers. Please fill in the form here

Contest ends October 13, 2010.

Teaser Tuesday-The Lost Saint

07 Sep, 2010 by in Teaser Tuesday, the lost saint 4 comments

Today’s Teaser Tuesday is from The Lost Saint by Bree Despain.

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly book meme
hosted by Miz B. of Should Be Reading.

This is how it works: Grab a book that you are currently reading. Turn to any page and grab two teaser sentences from that page. Make sure it’s not a spoiler in case anyone wants to read the book. Include the author and name of the book

“I couldn’t help but thinking that this would seem like the perfect night to someone like Talbot: a little dancing, a little dinner, and a little demon slaying for dessert. I thought about his pressed shirt, styled hair, and even a splash of musky cologne I could smell on his neck.”

Book Review- Life Liberty and Pursuit

When college-bound Eliza falls into a cruise-ship pool, she doesn’t expect to fall in love. And when navy recruit David pulls her from the water, he finds her surprisingly hard to resist. But a whirlwind of rescues, candlelit nights, and beachside misunderstandings pulls them into a four-day love affair that threatens to break their hearts before their love has a chance to start.

When David leaves for endless drills and physical training in boot camp, and Eliza returns to Albuquerque to prepare for Princeton in the fall, they dare to keep loving each other and struggle to imagine a future when they can be together. But when miles and mistrust pull them apart, they are forced to choose between keeping true to their dreams and having the courage to love.

I received this book from a cute friend of mine I met while working our vendor booths at Twi -events, Micha from We Book Apparel and Ominific Publishing. Thank you so much!!

The first couple of chapters of Life , Liberty and Pursuit were a little rocky for me. I had a hard time believing so many catastrophes would happen all in a four day period. Girl falls into swimming pool and almost drowns (can she not swim?), boy and brother get drugged and kidnapped while ashore. Then as the make outs during their four day cruise pick up it gets a little too steamy for my taste. I am thinking…”hmm not really YA material, more like watered down pure adult romance novel…thinking some of it could have been left out. But, I must shout hooray to Ms. Quinn for pushing abstinence, and advocating waiting. There was plenty I truly enjoyed about this book.

About a third of the way through and I was hooked. I found the interactions between David and Eliza via letters pulled my heart strings as they both try to navigate those crucial decisions made right after high school and beginning college. I am so glad the author didn’t tie their future up with a cute little bow and send them off happily ever after. There is separation of miles, testing conditions and time to get to know each other. Eliza is in the process of finding out who she is and what she truly wants while David is pushing himself at Navy boot camp. I personally love a man in uniform and grew up on various army bases so the story resonated with me. And it doesn’t hurt female readers to hear about his incredibly charming bunk mate Clayton. This was one of the strong points of the book for me. Real and likable secondary characters. As Eliza visits the Marek household, I can’t help thinking I want to be with them for their family Christmas. David’s brother is cute, his sister Tea spunky and his father a successful doctor in the community. They are a Polish Irish mix of fun and it’s endearing how much they support one another. I walked away with a good feeling, left with the theme of believing in the future and faith in the power of love. Overall I really liked it and would recommend it to those 18 and up. Four stars to a story about a cruise and real life choices made. To learn more visit http://www.lifelibertyandpursuit.com/

Chapter 2 Half Moon by Jordan Deen:

“She spread out a blanket and patted it for me to join her. “The first time Dillon touched me, the world stopped. I swear, I heard music. I never thought it would happen because I didn’t meet him until I was seventeen. So, we sort of have that in common. Dillon is seven years older than me too. He actually mated with someone else, but she died before either of them had transformed. She was five and he was six.” She picked up a smooth black rock and smashed it between her palms. “They never thought I would mate, but one night, we were following up on a lead to find you and poof! We mated, our marks appeared instantly, and we’ve been inseparable ever since. It hasn’t always been easy though. I guess that’s the point I was trying to get at.” She half smiled and tossed the rock into a deep part of the creek. “Anyway, the first time I transformed was just a few days after I turned eighteen. They thought that the gene had passed me, so my family was relieved when I finally mated.”
