Guest Post from Tyler Whitesides, Author of the Janitors Series

24 Sep, 2013 by in Shadow Mountain, tyler whitesides 1 comment

We are so excited to have bestselling author Tyler Whitesides here with us at Fire and Ice to share this exclusive guest post as part of the official Shadow Mountain Janitors blog tour. Today he explains just how the Janitors series took shape:

“I always try to draw inspiration from everyday occurrences and real life experiences. The idea to write a series about janitors came when I worked part time to clean a middle school. I had a few friends that worked the night shift with me, and I’m sure we were much more effective cleaning alone than we were on those mischievous nights that we went to work together. Perhaps the following story will show you what I mean.

It was a late night, easily past midnight, when we got to the school to start cleaning. The task of emptying 300-plus trash cans was exhausting before we even began. About an hour into the work, it became clear that we needed a little something to energize us.

Two of us let ourselves into the front office and used the school intercom to call our other friend who was sweeping in the gym. By the time he arrived, we had discovered a CD player next to the intercom. There was already a CD in the device and all we had to do was press play, and turn on the intercom.

Pleased with our discovery, we went back to work, now enjoying a variety of songs playing in every classroom via the intercom. It was nearing two o’clock in the morning, and we were about three songs into the mix, when our boss arrived abruptly, pajama-clad, in the middle of the hallway.

We waved and asked him what he was doing at the school so late. But he didn’t look too happy. He raced past us and turned off the music and intercom as quickly as he could. He shared a few choice words with us and trudged off down the hallway.

You see, apparently the school was equipped with several sets of speakers OUTSIDE the building. And while we had been enjoying “The Entertainer” at work, the neighbors in their beds… not so much.

The next day, I apologized profusely to the boss. He was good-natured and merely replied with, “at least you were playing music I liked! That was Scott Joplin, wasn’t it?”

I didn’t listen to music after that. I worked quickly and quietly. But each night, as I wielded my mop down the hallway, I let my imagination roam. And there, in the dusty, grimy corners of that middle school, the JANITORS series took shape.”

Thanks so much Tyler!

We caught up with him in NYC this year at BEA playing the “cans”

And don’t miss Book three of his series, which is hot off the press!

Deliberate Motherhood by The Power of Moms- Blog Tour and Book Review

Deliberate Motherhood: 12 Key Powers of Peace, Purpose, Order & Joy
by The Power of Moms
Paperback, 256 pages
Published September 1st 2013
by Familius
Non- fiction, Parenting
ISBN 1938301900
Book Source: Publicist
4 stars

Book Summary: The outstanding authors of Deliberate Motherhood have let the trials and hardships of motherhood mold them into better people. Whether the change includes learning patience when the two-year-old “paints” your walls with the black permanent marker or forgiving a teenager who screams “I hate you,” or loving more when that naughty child doesn’t really deserve it, it’s a change that refines us—or as the dictionary describes it, “removes impurities, makes something more effective or become more elegant.” That is powerful!

You may think that everything has been said about motherhood, but the delightful thing about Deliberate Motherhood is that every mother/author is one-of-a-kind. They each come from different backgrounds, have different parents, are married (or not) to different people, and certainly have “different” children.

Each of the 12 “Powers” provided in this book is a crucial component to help you in your motherhood. And the best part is that you don’t need to do it all at once. You can focus on one “power” a month, and over the course of a year, you’ll see great changes in yourself and in your family. The mark of a great book is that it makes you think . . . and it helps you change . . . which in the case of this book, is an absolute guarantee!

Review: My first contact with the Power of Moms came about three years ago when a woman in  my neighborhood invited me to join her learning circle– a group where women get together once a month, read an article and discuss their hopes, challenges and goals in motherhood. Over that year, I became more socially anxious and found that meeting together in a group wasn’t working for me at that time of life. We had another baby, adding number five to our family, and just this year decided to pick up the learning circles again and give it another shot. About the same time I was contacted by BookSparksPR to do a blog tour and review for a new book on motherhood published by the same group that puts on the learning circles. For some, reading a book or going online feels more comfortable than an in home gathering. So this book, Deliberate Motherhood is a great resource to put on the shelves of all women across the world “whose hands rock the cradle.”

Deliberate Motherhood explores 12 “Powers,” starting off with a large written section, family photos and blog links by each chapter author, and ending with personal stories from a variety of mothers. The chapter authors were most interesting to me as they had more time to fully explore acceptance, love, patience, balance. I most enjoyed the specific examples like what traditions they’ve found fun and how they’ve learned to find joy in the sometimes mundane tasks of everyday mothering.

This is a “take it a bit at a time kind of book”, rather than a “sit down and read it all in one day type of book.” I’d say leave it on your night stand or near a couch where you can refer to it often and soak in the principles one by one.

After reading Deliberate Motherhood, I found myself longing for more audio, visual content which can be found on the Power of Moms site. They have podcasts, instructional videos and a ton of material to choose from. The learning circles and retreats are wonderful for moms who like to be social and get out there to meet these wonderful women in person. But, had I not known where to look, (there is one referral sentence in the book’s conclusion), I wouldn’t have found it easily referenced through invitations to engage in the POM resources within the book. Would love to see some interactive QR codes with inspirational or life story links in the next publication.

Overall, I came away with a lot to think about and ponder. I looked up a few of the mother’s blogs to read more, but mostly turned to introspection…time thinking and praying about what needs to change and stay the same in our home.

My favorite quote from the book :  “Although I’m still resistant to change and not as flexible as I would like to be, I am a different mom than I was ten years ago. I’m different today because I have a different attitude toward parenting. Where I once sought control, now I seek to influence. Where I once thought I should intuitively have all the answers, I now realize I am still learning and ask for help when I get stuck. And where I once cared how others viewed me in my role, now I parent for my children and not the approval of other people…Today I know I’m a good mom.” Rachelle Szymanski

Thanks so much to Book Sparks PR for inviting me to be a part of the blog tour!

Fight For You
A Stripling Warrior Novel, #2 by Misty Moncur
Kindle Edition, 265 pages Published August 31st 2013
by Eden Books ASINB00EX0VQTM
Book source: author Age: YA
Genre: Historical fiction, romance
5 stars

Keturah fought her way into the army, but now she’s in Judea building fortifications, and the only thing she’s fought so far is boredom. The work is hard, and the other soldiers don’t think she can pull her weight. Her brothers are becoming strangers, and Zeke’s jealousy is getting worse – because Keturah is falling in love with the wrong warr

But she’s not about to let cruel pranks and hurt feelings keep her from doing what she knows to be right. She completes every order with faithfulness – a hasty retreat from the Lamanite army, a spy mission into the enemy stronghold, a midnight assassination. From burying the dead to whiling away hours on guard duty, Keturah will do whatever it takes to protect her religion, her freedom, her peace, and her family.

But in a camp of two thousand boys, the most important thing she has to protect is her heart.

Fight For You is the second novel in Misty Moncur’s Stripling Warrior series. Fall in love with these romantic novels set against a vivid Book of Mormon backdrop.

Review:
Wow. Misty Moncur knows how to write! The second book in her Stripling Warrior Series is unforgettable. I’ve read over the war chapter in the Book of Mormon, I know the stories, but never have I seen them come to life in vivid color with emotions, romance and action.

Keturah has entered the band of stripling warriors, boys ages 12-18 who are fighting for the liberty of their fathers, children, homes and religion. Kit is is a daughter of Helaman, the only female to join the ranks. And this is no longer training with Gideon in the forest or sparring with her camp…this is the real battlefield and the ravages of war. Amongst the action there are moments of clarity and faith that stirred the Spirit within me and made me so grateful for the fortitude of leaders like Gideon. Men who not only led and loved, but who also knelt in prayer before going out to meet the enemy. They did not doubt their God would deliver them and angels sent to fight beside them.

There are stolen moments of a love that is deepening and blooming like a moon flower. The tension is perfect. Kit has some hard decisions to make. Is she meant to be here? Will the man she loves return the commitment as a husband? And, will Zeke forgive her, can she accept the loyalty and attention of her childhood friend?

I enjoyed the idea of healers who used herbs and the things of the earth traveling with the army to help.

Wishing book three, which is due to be released in November were out today so I could keep reading. I’ll be passing the Stripling Warrior series on to my children and family. And, I will never read about the Title of Liberty or Helaman’s army the same again.

Content: moderate war related violence, kissing

About the Author: Misty Moncur wanted to be Indiana Jones when she grew up. Instead, she became an author and has her adventures at home. In her jammies. With her imagination. And pens that she keeps running dry.

Misty lives in a marsh near a very salty lake in Utah with her husband and children, where they cuddle up in the evenings and read their Kindles. Well, she does anyway.

YA Book Review: Hadley- Hadley Benson by Jody Wind Durfee

Hadley-Hadley Benson
by Jody Wind Durfee
Paperback, 136 pages
Published August 2013
by Covenant Communications
ISBN 139781621081517
Age: YA
Genre: Contemp
Book Source: LDSBA
5 stars

When Maddi Benson moves in next door to Jaxon Quayle, neither of them knows how much life is about to change. Jaxon knows he should date only girls who share his faith, but as he gets to know Maddi he wants his new neighbor to be more than a friend. To make things even more complicated, there’s Maddi’s twin brother Hadley (or Hadley-Hadley, as he calls himself), who has special needs and always seems to be hanging around, and Jaxon’s pal Tanner, who feels more than a little left out. Jaxon feels hopeful when the Bensons begin to consider joining the Church, which would solve at least one of his problems. But just when things seem to be working out, a horrible prank seems to make everything fall apart, leaving Maddi and Jaxon caught in the middle of doubt and faith, hurt and forgiveness, friendship and love.

Review: I received a copy of Hadley- Hadley Benson from a signing by the author at the LDSBA convention and truly had no idea what to expect. The only thing I knew is that I liked the red chucks on the cover. As soon as I started reading the sweet newness of a High School crush and the every day trials of living with a loved one on the autism spectrum I jumped in. I absolutely beam inside when an author chooses to integrate and feature a character with ASD or special needs, and Jody Wind Durfee does it well. My heart was tugged over the trials Hadley Benson’s family and friends go though to protect both his innocence and his spirit.

Told in the perspective of Jaxon Quayle, a soccer star and ordinary next door neighbor to the Benson family, this is a story of forgiveness and hope. Jaxon knows from the second Maddi Benson moves in that she is someone he wants to get to know better, but Hadley keeps somehow tagging along. Jaxon has a lot of growing up to do and readers get to see his character develop in testimony and awareness of others. Each chapter is very short, which I actually liked. There were only a few glitches in long paragraphs of simple conversation that slowed the pacing of the book, but I sat down and read it all in one Saturday afternoon, finishing in tears.

Jody Wind Durfee has written a relevant and heartfelt YA contemp for the LDS and general audience that I would happily recommend, youth or adult. Her sweet understanding of special needs youth and their caregivers is a message that needs to be shared and I’m so glad she took the time to write Hadley- Hadley Benson!

Author Bio: I’ve coached Special Olympics for a little over 10 years and it’s one of the most enriching things I do. I’ve made many friends and have been taught too many lessons to count by people much, much farther up the awesome chain than I. This year the State Summer Games were held at Herriman High School. First, whoa! I was amazed at the size of the school and all of its facilities!

Second, the volunteers were extraordinary! I’ve attended almost every Summer Games since I began coaching and the people that help are always incredible, but this year, I might have paid more attention to what everybody does. The kitchen staff were always helpful and friendly––and there were a lot of people to feed, the janitorial staff was ON IT, and all of those helping with Healthy Athletes were kind and professional, no matter how many times I interrupted to gather athletes for events.

I can’t begin to mention all of the work the volunteers do, but here are a few things I noticed––they encourage, cheer for, time, announce, stage athletes to prepare for races, guide athletes onto the track, take pictures, tape lines so the athletes (and coaches) aren’t confused about where the athletes need to race, ready medals and ribbons, announce medals, make snow cones, paint faces, sing, dance, set up and take down tents, organize opening and closing ceremonies, listen, share, coach, love and on and on and on. (I haven’t even mentioned the trillions of hours the paid SOUT staff put in.)In addition to all of this, there was something I hadn’t seen before this year. In a corner of the school, there was a back drop, stool, interviewer and camera where people were able to tell their personal Special Olympics story. I’d walk past the area each time I retrieved an athlete from Healthy Athletes. I was always in a hurry, but I still heard little snippets. Some were given by parents or coaches or siblings, volunteers or athletes. Storytelling is always powerful, but I can only imagine the power of these stories and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that one day I’ll be able to tell about the many people with Special Olympics that have influenced me. I’ll be watching for the stories they collected this year.

The thing is, all of these volunteers get together for the incredible, courageous, human, funny, witty, humbling athletes. And I am so thankful they let me be a part of it.

The Selection Series by Kiera Cass – Content Reviews

17 Sep, 2013 by in The Selection Series, ya 3 comments

Over the past week I read the entire Selection Series by Kiera Cass. Harper Collins was kind enough to send me The Elite,  and since I never read book one, it was off to the library I went. I’ve heard these titles shelved in YA dystopian or fantasy, but I don’t think they really fit neatly into either category… you tell me what you think.

Here’s the brief low down on what I though of all three and the parental content warnings.

The Selection
Hardcover, 327 pages
Published April 24th 2012
by HarperTeen
ISBN 0062059939
Source: Library

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself—and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

Breview: If you are a fan of the TV series Bachelorette this has the same feeling to it. There are some light dystopian vibes as this is a futuristic society based on a tight caste system where the mates are selected for the prince.  The main man, Prince Maxon and some stilted and formal lines. I think was meant to be that way, but at times I still had trouble connecting to his way of talking.

I really struggled with Aspen and America’s relationship. He’s a creep! And the ending felt totally out of character for him.

There some great scenes of “ear tugging” conversations and sweet dates between Maxon and America Singer, the voice and MC of the book.

Content: I was bothered by the content in book one wouldn’t let my daughters read it. Highlight below with your cursor to reveal content.

Content: Youth sneaking out, heavy making out, talk of being a virgin, some chauvinistic views of women and iea they could be taken advantage of. Too much sexual content for my taste. Drinking.

The Prince (The Selection #0.5)
by Kiera Cass
ebook, 64 pages
Published March 5th 2013
 by HarperTeen
ISBN 0062248162
Source: Bought on Amazon
Before thirty-five girls were chosen to compete in the Selection . . .
Before Aspen broke America’s heart . . .
There was another girl in Prince Maxon’s life. . . .
Don’t miss this thrilling 64-page digital original novella set in the world of the New York Times bestselling novel The Selection. Also features a teaser to The Elite, Kiera Cass’s hotly anticipated sequel to The Selection.
Breview: I really enjoyed hearing things from Maxon’s point of view, since both books one and two are written in America’s voice. And we learn more about the behind the scenes of why each girl was chosen as well as a glimpse of the King and Queen’s personalities.
I wish the novella were a bit longer, it seemed super short. But there are sneak peek pages in the back for The Elite
Content: clean

The Elite (The Selection, #2)
Hardcover, 323 pages
Published April 23rd 2013
by HarperTeen
ISBN 0062059963
Source: Publisher

Thirty-five girls came to the palace to compete in the Selection. All but six have been sent home. And only one will get to marry Prince Maxon and be crowned princess of Illea.
America still isn’t sure where her heart lies. When she’s with Maxon, she’s swept up in their new and breathless romance, and can’t dream of being with anyone else. But whenever she sees Aspen standing guard around the palace, and is overcome with memories of the life they planned to share. With the group narrowed down to the Elite, the other girls are even more determined to win Maxon over—and time is running out for America to decide.

Just when America is sure she’s made her choice, a devastating loss makes her question everything again. And while she’s struggling to imagine her future, the violent rebels that are determined to overthrow the monarchy are growing stronger and their plans could destroy her chance at any kind of happy ending.

Click here for teasers from The Elite.

Breview: AAARRRRG. The back and forth in The Elite killed me. It got really annoying to have America flip flop over and over again. Make up your mind sister! And please be honest with the one being left in the dark.  Book two has more violence and dystopian elements, so overall a darker tone. Chapter ten is where it really starts to turn violent for a heads up. Definite love triangle tangle going. Without spoiling, I was disappointed by Maxon’s explanation for his behavior, when he’s been such a gentleman with America.

Highlight the next sentence with cursor for content: heavy violence, child abuse, underage drinking, heavy petting in a bedroom, making out / cheating used as a way “to relieve stress” , mention of teenage pregnancy. one swear word.

In a Nutshell: This is a very popular series based on the waiting list at the library for book one. I have to admit, I enjoyed it enough to buy the novella and read book two, but I wouldn’t pass it on to my own tweens. I’m truly hoping the love triangle gets resolved ASAP because to me the choice is obvious…Maxon, would be my selection.
