Rules of Rome

The Rules in Rome

With Hitler’s forces firmly entrenched in Europe, countless heroes seek to end the madman’s reign. Bastien Ley is one of the best. Working in Italy for the Office of Strategic Services, he’s been tasked with sabotaging German convoys. When his team kills an officer headed for Rome, the man’s similarity to Bastien is undeniable, and seeing an opportunity to turn the tide of the war, Bastien makes a bold decision: he will assume the dead officer’s identity. He becomes Dietrich, an Iron Cross–wearing German officer—an ideal position from which to infiltrate the Nazi ranks in Rome. To help with his stressful assignment, his superiors send him a reinforcement in the form of the lovely Gracie Begni, an intelligent and eager radio operator with absolutely no undercover experience.

With a gulf of resentment between them, these two agents must find a way to portray a couple in love. Soon their reluctant alliance becomes much more as Bastien and Gracie find themselves getting lost in their feelings for each other. But as they engage in battle against the deadliest foe the world has ever known, the pair quickly realizes their love may be doomed. As the Rome Gestapo threatens to destroy all they’ve worked for, will Bastien and Gracie survive their charade?

A.L. Sowards has always been fascinated by the 1940s, but she’s grateful she didn’t live back then. She doesn’t think she could have written a novel on a typewriter, and no one would be able to read her handwriting if she wrote her books out longhand. She does, however, think they had the right idea when they rationed nylon and women went barelegged.

The Accidental Empress by Allison Pataki Blog Tour and Giveaway

18 Feb, 2015 by in Uncategorized 2 comments

unnamed (5)

Fire and Ice is today’s stop on The Accidental Empress Blog Tour hosted by Kismet. We have author Allison Pataki here with an exclusive guest post as well as an amazing giveaway. Read on!

New York Times bestselling author Allison Pataki follows up on her critically-acclaimed debut novel, The Traitor’s Wife, with the little-known and tumultuous love story of “Sisi,” the Austro-Hungarian Empress and captivating wife of Emperor Franz Joseph.

The year is 1853, and the Habsburgs are Europe’s most powerful ruling family. With his empire stretching from Austria to Russia, from Germany to Italy, Emperor Franz Joseph is young, rich, and ready to marry.

Fifteen-year-old Elisabeth, “Sisi,” Duchess of Bavaria, travels to the Habsburg court with her older sister, who is betrothed to the young emperor. But shortly after her arrival at court, Sisi finds herself in an unexpected dilemma: she has inadvertently fallen for and won the heart of her sister’s groom. Intrigued by Sisi’s guileless charm and energetic spirit, not to mention her unrivaled beauty, Franz Joseph reneges on his earlier proposal and declares his intention to marry Sisi instead.

Plucked from obscurity and thrust onto the throne of Europe’s most treacherous imperial court, Sisi has no idea what struggles and dangers—and temptations—await her. Sisi upsets political and familial loyalties in her quest to win, and keep, the love of her emperor, her people, and of the world.

With Pataki’s rich period detail and cast of complex, compelling characters, The Accidental Empress offers a captivating glimpse into the bedrooms and staterooms of one of history’s most intriguing royal families, shedding new light on the glittering Habsburg Empire and its most mesmerizing, most beloved “Fairy Queen.”

littleredgpost

The Biggest Challenge in Writing ‘The Accidental Empress’

The story of Sisi, or Empress Elisabeth of Austria, proves that history is juicier than fiction.

I decided early on that I would be crazy not to rely heavily on the historical record for plot and character development in The Accidental Empress. The raw material—a love triangle! An empire divided! An incredibly overbearing mother-in-law! Infidelity! Waltzes!—it was all so good and intriguing. I believed that the history of Sisi’s life and time period provided all of the fixings to create a really compelling novel.

So the biggest challenge, then, in writing this novel was wrangling the historical record. Sisi, or Empress Elisabeth, was an incredibly complex individual who lived in a fascinating moment in history. And her story—in some ways very relatable, in some ways completely foreign—played out before such an epic backdrop, with all the accompanying glitz of the Habsburg Court and the tumult of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. There’s so much information available on Sisi and Franz Joseph and the Habsburg Court. And it’s all so fascinating that I wanted to use it all. I wanted to include as many facts and events and individuals as I could, until the story was nearly bursting at the seams.

So, I sat down with my pile of notes and my plot outlines and my stack of books and I took stock. I leveled with myself. I reminded myself that, when writing a novel, the story has to flow in a manner completely different than that of a textbook or a straight biography. I knew that I couldn’t just list an infinite number of facts. I had to choose what I needed in order to tell my fictionalized version of Sisi’s story. I could get a bit creative. I could pluck not only from the authoritative historical accounts, but from the mythology of Sisi as well (and let’s be clear, she was a larger-than-life figure who inspired legends and myths even in her own time, and especially through the ages).

All of that is, after all, what makes Historical Fiction so fun to write. And, hopefully, fun to read as well!

For me, the research didn’t feel like a tiring and onerous process. I actually really love research—especially when it involves total immersion into history. For me, the research is one of the most fun parts. It is the raw material that whets my imagination’s appetite. It is the key with which I unlock this world of Sisi and her Habsburg environs.

The only time the research became difficult was when I came to junctions in Sisi’s life where the historical record was mixed on what exactly happened. For example, one of the pivotal plot twists of this novel occurs when Sisi flees the court shortly after giving birth to her long-awaited son (a male heir, at last!). One would think that that would have been a high point in Sisi’s life. And yet, the circumstances for why she left the court so abruptly remain shrouded in conjecture and conflicting reports. I can’t say which of the many historians to take this up are correct, but, since I’m writing historical fiction, I chose to explore one of the more salacious (and highly credible) theories.

So, I guess, after all is said and done, the research is not really the most challenging part. It’s what comes after the research. The challenge is in figuring out how to pick and choose from all the delicious bits just what you need for your fictional novel. Determining what to illuminate and what to shed, like examining your oversized cargo on an already too-heavy cart. It’s in the transcribing, in the transmitting. It’s the process of taking in the history and then putting out the fiction.

Just Pru Blog Tour and Giveaway

Welcome to my tour stop for Just Pru by Anne Pfeffer. This is a review tour and runs February 16-27th.  Just Pru releases March 2, 2015. Check out the tour page for more information.

About the Book

JustPru_Lo res_11.20When twenty-five-year-old Pru Anderson—braless, pajama-clad, and clutching her cat, Chuck—is rescued from her burning Los Angeles apartment, the thing that scares her most is meeting the neighbors. New people make her hide in the bathroom, counting by sevens, but when her home is destroyed, she must turn strangers into friends …  or crawl back to the controlling parents she only recently escaped.

What would her idol, Pepper Hathaway, do? That’s a no brainer: the detective-slash-supermodel heroine from Pru’s favorite TV series would take no prisoners while looking fierce in a tankini and stilettos. So when the chance comes up to live with playwright Ellen, Pru sets aside her fears and goes for it.

Thus begin the adventures of a girl who’s never had a job, a friend, or a first kiss. Swept into Ellen’s whirlwind life, Pru begins to build her own, as director’s assistant for a new play, muse to brooding actor Blake, and possible love interest to adorably neurotic neighbor, Adam.

Only one thing can derail Pru’s exhilarating journey. Well, actually, it’s two things—and they’re in a car headed straight for LA to torpedo her life. When the past that nearly destroyed her comes calling, who will she be: a Prudence or a Pepper?

Review

Just Pru is hilarious! I love a book I can pick up and literally find myself laughing all the way through. Pru is a colorfully flawed character who struggles with anxiety and weight issues. Her life takes a topsy turvy nosedive when her apartment building catches fire and she’s left with nothing. She’s got a lot to learn in the big city, away from  mom and dad for the first time, but she’s determined to make it work! With wonderfully written characters and hilarious self talk moments, I truly enjoyed Anne Pfeffer’s coming of age novel. If you need a fun pick me up book with an OCD neighbor a crazy cat and a play write roommate who stashes toy guns, you will love Just Pru!

Can they change their destiny? They kissed only once—and it was electric, like the air before a storm. But Corinthe and Luc broke the rules of the universe, and learned too late that their love would have consequences. In the dizzying aftermath, Luc refuses to accept his destiny—not if it means a life without Corinthe. As a fire rages through the Crossroads that connect worlds, Luc must find a way to turn back time and save Corinthe once and for all.Meanwhile, Luc’s 15-year-old sister Jasmine starts to realize things are not as they seem when time begins stuttering, sending her everyday life in San Francisco spinning into chaos. She’s thrown into the path of Ford, a troubled soul with a secret past, who helps her unravel the mysterious threads that connect them all.

Two breathtaking romances interweave across time in this story of what lies on the other side of Fate, as both Jas and Luc discover the incredible lengths they will go for love.

littleredgpost

Tell us about the mythology behind your story and any fairy tales or myths you used.

Its a broader look at fate based out of mythology. Instead of having three sister Fates, there is a group of girls who oversee the general direction of everything in the universe. The Fates aren’t the ones who go out and made sure that destiny unfolds as its meant to be though, that job is up to the Executors. So while there are bits of mythology that inspired the books, its only at its most basic free will verses fate level.

If you could visit a hidden world or fictional place where would it be?

Narnia! I want to open an old wardrobe and step into another world!

Favorite writing music and snacks?

It depends on whether I’m writing contemporary or fantasy. For books like FATES and CHAOS, it has to be “big” music, think movie scores without words. I love chocolate, so mini anythings are pretty nice motivators! Chocolate truffles come out when I’m doing a really good job!

Davines Natural Tech Replumping Hair Filler Superactive 100 ml 3.38 oz

Davines Natural Tech Replumping Hair Filler Superactive is a leave-in treatment for all hair types. What it does: It gives hair longer lasting hold. Hair looks compact, replumped and very shiny. What else you need to know: Treatment lasts 6 to 8 shampoos. This is a Naturaltech product.

I received sample sizes of all of these products in my December Birchbox. I loved the purple floral packaging so was super excited to try it. The smell of all three is the same and not my favorite. It’s a musky rose with too much emphasis on the musk. The pump action on the Replumping Hair Filler Superactiv top is awesome, but I can’t say I liked the product. I have thin fine hair and it left my hair static-y and dry. I personally would not buy a full size of the shampoo, conditioner or spray in this line.

When A State Forces A Child- Why You Should Opt Out of Testing

08 Feb, 2015 by in Uncategorized Leave a comment

opt-out5

Many of you may have noticed my posts have been a bit more sporadic lately. This week has been CRAZY. All of those things they tell you happen in politics, DO in fact, happen in politics.

Here’s a recap of what my family has been through this week:

Assistant Attorney General Further Restricts Parental Rights in Utah

School Violates Law, Forces Students to Take Exams Against Parent’s Wishes

Opting Out of State Tests

* Confusion abounds on Utah school test opt-out rules

Here is my public response, given in two minutes… since that is all they gave me at the Utah Board of Education Meeting. You can view it here. Or listen to the meeting here.

My name is Heather Gardner
I am the mother of five children.
I am the daughter of a teacher who taught for 24 years up until that day she died.
I was a former State School Board candidate, however, the nominating committee and Judge Waddoups did not choose to place me on the ballot.
And, I am also the mother of a child, who last week was forced to take an assessment, the DIBELS at her school.
Many of you–in fact, all of you, should have received an email in your inbox this week. If you have not seen that email, I am happy top re-forward you that email to you, which tells the story of what we have been going through the past two years advocating for parents’ rights in our school and the right to opt out of statewide assessments, not state administered assessments.
I have had three of my children forced to take an alternate exam on SAGE testing day and we have been pressured by our local school, our executive charter board, and ultimately, our state to surrender our parental rights.
I am the mother of multiple children who did not reach benchmark on DIBELS, or national and state proficiency levels on end of year testing. However, I was never notified by my school, that they did not meet that.
I am the mother of a kindergartner who went through seven hours of neuro psychological evaluation and assessment by the school, and had data on my side, yet no services were offered to my son.
I am a mother who has gone through injections with my children, occupational therapy, genetic counseling, CT scans, and due process.

I AM A MOTHER, I AM NOT A STAKEHOLDER

and I will not let my children’s future be at stake because an Assistant Attorney General or an assessment director tells my school they need to force my child to take a test.
My child went on her last day of school to say goodbye to her teachers and friends, and was singled out and pulled out, and was forced to take a test, directly against parental opt out.
I would ask that you consider parental rights today and not stand idly by, but vote that the opt out memo that was issued this week be amended.
Please vote on this.
Give the rights back to the parents.
Under both the United States Constitution and the constitution of this state, a parent possesses a fundamental liberty, interest in the care , custody and management of the parents’ children.

Does this make you upset?

Are you as concerned as I am?

If so, here’s what you can do:

1) Opt out or refuse statewide and common core related assessments. In my state you have the legal right to do so under SB122

2) Share the media articles above or comment directly on them

3) Learn your rights and exercise them. Not sure what they are? Look here

4) If you are in Utah, email any of the following:

Mainstream media contacts

Your House Representative

Your Senator

Senator Aaron Osmond

Utah Board of Education

Superintendent Brad Smith

Utah State Office of Education Assessment

Judy Park at USOE

AAG Chris Lacombe

AG Sean Reyes

Legacy Preparatory Academy

Executive Board at LPA

Your local school

Your local and district school board

5) If you have had similar experiences or have input on how to prevent this from happening again, share it on this form.

6) Support a new parental rights bill in Utah and Aaron Osmond’s bill which should be introduced in 2015 session to amend SB122. Email him and ask him to expedite SB204.

7) Come to the Utah State Board of Education Meeting Friday March 6, 2015 at 8 AM. 250 S. 500 E. Salt Lake City, Utah. Wear a green shirt. Ask the board NOT to renew our ESEA waiver in March.

8) Speak up to defend teachers, children and parents.

9) Learn about the SAGE formative, interim, and summative tests administered by AIR, statewide longitudinal data system (SLDS) and data collection on our children. Google it, you may be surprised.

10) Follow this years’ legislation that relates to education. Read the bills, track them and testify in committee if you have a strong opinion. Discuss your wishes with your representative or senator.

11) Ask your local school and board to introduce a new parental rights, opt out and student privacy policy. Write one yourself. I did.

You must be the change you wish to see in the world- Mahatma Gandhi

In this motivating talk related to the 2015 youth theme, John Bytheway explains what it means to truly embark — to get fully on board in the service of God with all your heart, might, mind, and strength. Using scriptures, powerful stories, and his characteristic humor, John explains that with the Savior's help, we can remain on board and eventually stand blameless before God at the last day.

John Bytheway challenges listeners to get fully “on the Boat” with the Lord in his latest audio CD “Embark.” With a charming, witty personality and stories that make the point clear, listeners will feel inspired to stick with the Lord in life. I loved his concept for youth that if you love computers, use the time you spend on them wisely. Do family history, honor the names of your ancestors. I listened to this CD two and from meetings this week and I felt inpired to have a pure heart, to get and stay on the boat.
