Published May 27th 2010

Children’s ISBN1847386962

For Nora Grey, romance was not part of the plan. She’s never been particularly attracted to the boys at her school, no matter how much her best friend, Vee, pushes them at her…until Patch comes along. With his easy smile and eyes that seem to see inside her, Nora is drawn to him against her better judgment, but after a series of terrifying encounters, Nora’s not sure whom to trust. Patch seems to be everywhere she is, and to know more about her than her closest friends. She can’t decide whether she should fall into his arms or run and hide. And when she tries to seek some answers, she finds herself near a truth that is far more unsettling than anything Patch makes her feel. For Nora is right in the middle of an ancient battle between the immortal and those that have fallen – and when it comes to choosing sides, the wrong choice will cost her life

The Gifted
by Deborah Andreasen
Paperback, 240 pages

Published March 28th 2011

ISBN 1456578235

4 stars

Pyper just wants a normal life. But ever since the day she died, she’s been able to control objects with her mind. What she can’t control is a mother who fears Pyper’s ability and the possibility of it being discovered. Pyper only finds solace in her friend and brother, Baler. When Pyper moves to yet another new school, she meets Kael, who takes an immediate interest in her. He knows her secret, and he’s got one for her: he needs her help saving the Fae people. The problem is, Pyper doesn’t believe in Faeries. But when her brother is abducted, Pyper doesn’t have much choice. Can she really save a race she doesn’t believe exists? Can she rescue her brother? And can she accept her second chance at life?

The first thing that grabbed me about The Gifted is how swiftly the writing pulls you in and holds you. Each page is tight and creatively crafted. Pyper, a red haired green eyed fireball, has been forced to move states over and over because of the impact of her strange abilities. As the book opens we find her in a new shcool and once again, two girls have singled her out as a freak. She has a little bit of trouble controlling her temper, and those on the receiving end meet with paranormal circumstances. Watching all of this unfold is Kael, popular gorgeous classmate who doesn’t seem at all phased by Pyper’s blatant efforts to completely ignore his advances. He tries and eventually succeeds in winning a tiny bit of Pyper’s trust. Neither he nor the two mean girls are at all what they seem.

Pyper has always had her brother Baler to confide in and lean on, but as time wears on he seems to be slipping further and further away to his new group of friends. Little do either of them know just how influential and life changing their choice in peers will become. Brother and sister have yet to meet the battle they were meant to fight. Andreasen takes faerie lore and puts in a fantastical paranormal twist which will appeal to Young Adults. The Gifted is a clean read I would gladly let my children read and once you pick it up you’ll stay with the plot until the end. I loved the brother and sister loyalty portrayed as well as the kind love Kael shows. It’s endearing to see such genuinely nice YA characters.

Book Review- The Mother’s Mite

The Mother’s Mite
by DeAnne Flynn
Paperback, 146 pages
Published February 23rd 2011
by Deseret Book Company
ISBN 1606419374
5 stars

For every mother who has wondered if she’s doing enough for her family, The Mother’s Mite provides hope that small things really do make a difference. As mothers, grandmothers, nurturers, and caregivers, we are often tempted to view our ordinary daily contributions as an endless string of undersized tasks, none of which seem worthy of any special consideration. But they are. This collection of small-and-simple moments provides reassurance that although our small offerings may not seem significant at the time, these tiny tributes undeniably make an immeasurable difference to those we love. • Each true story concludes with an unexpected gift, an offering far greater than the act of service. • Includes recipes and ideas to inspire your own “mother’s mites.” • A perfect Mother’s Day gift for women in all stages of life.

Last weekend I attended Ladie’s Night at our local Deseret Book and this beautiful charismatic author took my children under her wing feeding them oreos. Then she went step further, requesting a picture and giving me a copy of her book for review. DeAnne Flynn is so incredibly nice! Her book, The Mother’s Mite, is one I think all mothers should read. Each chapter is a story emphasizing a tiny life lesson learned from a mom. And together all of the accounts add up to remind us what a vital role we play as caregivers, women and nurturers- that every little act of service orchestrates a big impact in the lives of those we touch. There are recipes, definitions and quotes intermixed in the pages. I read it in one sitting on Sunday and by the end was in tears. What a tribute DeAnne has written! I would recommend this as a perfect gift for Mother’s Day or just a thoughtful token to a friend in need of a pick me up. Five stars and a smile to Mrs. Flynn, mother of seven children, speaker and talented journalist. Check her website for an opportunity to help others and for stories that rejuvenate the soul.

Books For JAPAN #5- Danielle Thorne Bundle

06 Apr, 2011 by in relief 1 comment

Our fifth auction for Japan relief is a bundle of three ebooks donated by author Danielle Thorne.

Turtle Soup
Sea turtles may be endangered but after an encounter with marine biologist, Jack Brandon, nothing will stop Sara Hart from naming her deli Turtle Soup. When Jack takes a job at the nearby Georgia Aquarium, Sara finds the environmental poster boy at her door, hungry and carrying a chip on his shoulder. Neither thinks the other has what it takes, until a scuba class reveals what lies beneath the surface. It will take food, friends, and a little help from Mother Nature, to help them see that making a difference isn’t all numbers and glory. It must begin with love

By Heart and Compass
When Lacey Whitman buys a restored Victorian home, she never dreams discovering an antique diary will lead her back to sea and into the arms of the dive bum she’d rather forget. Her habit of living in the past comes to a screeching halt as diver Max Bertrand and the diary of his ancestor take Lacey on the quest of a lifetime: To discover and raise the privateer ship, Specter, and bring the treasure and legacy of a true hero home again. But will finding it cost her heart?

The Privateer
The reign of piracy is over in the Caribbean, or so it’s believed until diamonds are discovered in Brazil. Despite the cover-up, Captain Julius Bertrand begins to hear whispers. The Spanish guardacostas are dumping log books, and a new French pirate is on the prowl. Distracted by an avaricious woman he could never love, and the beautiful Kate O’Connell who doesn’t need him, he tries to untangle the web of mysterious cargo someone in the New World wants kept secret. When Bertrand’s pirating past returns with the explosive force of a sweeping broadside, he finds he must sacrifice everything his respectable life has brought him, in order to save what matters most.

Place your bid by leaving a comment with the amount you are willing to pay for this ebook bundle. Auction ends April 27, 2011 and 100% of the proceeds go to Japan relief.

Book Review-The Near Witch

The Near Witch
by Victoria Schwab

Hardcover, 288 pages

Expected publication:

August 2nd 2011

by Hyperion Books

ISBN 1423137876

4 stars

The Near Witch is only an old story told to frighten children. If the wind calls at night, you must not listen. The wind is lonely, and always looking for company. And there are no strangers in the town of Near. These are the truths that Lexi has heard all her life. But when an actual stranger—a boy who seems to fade like smoke—appears outside her home on the moor at night, she knows that at least one of these sayings is no longer true. The next night, the children of Near start disappearing from their beds, and the mysterious boy falls under suspicion. Still, he insists on helping Lexi search for them. Something tells her she can trust him. As the hunt for the children intensifies, so does Lexi’s need to know—about the witch that just might be more than a bedtime story, about the wind that seems to speak through the walls at night, and about the history of this nameless boy. Part fairy tale, part love story, Victoria Schwab’s debut novel is entirely original yet achingly familiar: a song you heard long ago, a whisper carried by the wind, and a dream you won’t soon forget.

The Near Witch is a bedtime story remembered in fragments passed down from father to daughter to sister. Victoria Schwab uses rich poetic folklore to lure readers into the village of Near which is closed off and has it’s suspicions of anyone unusual. The villagers live in fear which is heightened as a stranger blows into town and small children begin disappearing without a trace. The stranger, Cole is indeed mysterious and draws the curiosity of main character Lexi. She is unlike the other women of her time. Lexi is a tracker and feels the moor around her as very alive. She honors the memory of her father and the land -accepting those shunned with the respect she was taught. But when her own family is placed in danger Lexi will step up to find the kidnapper.

A slow building atmospheric tale, this is a book that starts out subtly and ends in thick, creepy tension. It’s clean and suited for middle readers graduating to YA. With it’s old world fairy tale feel, readers who enjoyed Hansel and Gretel, Little Red or more currently, The Vespertine by Saundra Mitchell will also love The Near Witch. Victoria Schwab can sure spin a wonderful tale not to be read alone or in the dark! Thanks to Netgalley and Hyperion Children’s for the sneak peek. And to Ms. Schwab for helping me create photo images and jewelry to match the mood of her book. She’s a lovely person and what a stunningly strong debut!

If you would like a chance to win a TNW inspired 8×12 photo print from LittleRedReads on Etsy, just comment below with your favorite item in our collection based on The Near Witch.
