Write About What You Know: Advice with More than A Grain of Truth

“Write about what you know” is such a longstanding piece of advice to anyone who is interested in becoming a writer that it has definitely become a cliché. That being said, like many clichés, there is more than a grain of truth in the idea.

Here are 3 reasons that writing about what you know it great advice.

Passion

One of the most important ways to hook readers is by offering them an emotional connection. What do we know better than our passion? Writing about what you are passionate about whether it is characters engaged in a fictional adventure, an important political topic like protecting and saving the environment, an amazing trip or the challenges of parenting, is the way to offer readers an emotional connection. This is a path to finding readers who will share your passion and value your words.

Creating an Experience

Over and over readers say that what they want is characters they can care about. How do we as writers engage readers in this way? A great story is a complete experience that is more than the sum of its components because it is entered on the experiential level. Most great stories include a highly detailed description of the setting and scenes. Who can forget the experience of Scout and Jem looking down from the courthouse balcony to where Atticus and Tom sat at the defense table or the dewdrops shimmering on Charlotte’s Web? In order to create this kind of experience, one must truly know the situation in some way either through personal knowledge or careful research.

Authenticity

Some synonyms for the word authentic are real, genuine and valid. The glue that holds it all together is that readers come to believe. They trust that they are exploring and sharing something that is at heart truthful. Even if it is the most amazing adventure such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, it feels more like history, a genuine description of a bygone era that one has the privilege to relive as a reader. That truth is the feeling of authenticity that writers can convey when writing about what they know. -Camille Matthews

Summary from Goodreads: Jackson Godspeed is the hottest young Angel in a city filled with them. He’s days away from becoming a full Guardian, and people around the world are already competing for the chance to be watched over by him. Everyone’s obsessed with the Angels and the lucky people they protect – everyone except for Madison Montgomery.

Maddy’s the one girl in Angel City who doesn’t breathlessly follow the Angels on TV and gossip blogs. When she meets Jackson, she doesn’t recognize him. But Jackson is instantly captivated by her, and against all odds the two fall in love.

Maddy is swiftly caught up in Jackson’s scene, a world of glamour, paparazzi – and murder. A serial killer is on the loose, leaving dead Angels’ wings for the police to find on the Walk of Fame. Even the Guardians are powerless to protect themselves in the face of this threat … and this time it’s up to Maddy to save Jackson.

Crystal’s Review: This book really caught me by surprise, I had no idea when I first picked it up, even after reading the summery, that I would love it as much as I did. I was intrigued from the very first page and was unable to put the book down. I spent a full day devouring all four hundred six pages of this book. The book starts with an intriguing premise. The world is pretty much the same as the one we live in right now with one large exception. Angels have revealed them self to the world, in the story this happened hundreds of years ago and currently the Angels are idolized by almost everyone. They are guardian angels, the are immortal and most people would kill to even catch a glimpse of them. However they are not the traditional guardian angel in that their services come with a fee, and a hefty one at that. Only the richest of the people can afford the “coverage”. If you don’t have coverage than you should live life a little more carefully because there will be no angel swooping down to save you from danger.  This whole idea of guardian angels for pay really pulled me in. It was so different than anything I have ever come across in a storyline before. I found the characters were easy for me to imagine and connect with. This book has a little something for everyone. There is of course a love story but there is also murder and mystery, secrets to be revealed, and enough twists, turns, and surprises to keep you reading till the very end. After this book I will definitely be on the look out for other books by this author.

Content: Underage drinking, Sexual Tension between characters, Graphic descriptions of violence

Book Summary from Goodreads: In a world overtaken by greed and a ruthless, power-hungry dictator, Pinecone knows he’s no warrior. But when he’s entrusted with the sacred Scroll of Quickening, an ancient record that holds great power, Pinecone must summon the courage to protect the scroll. If he doesn’t, its secrets will be lost forever.

Meanwhile, Pinecone’s friend Leafe is mounting a makeshift rebellion to fend off the Thane whose evil might grows stronger every day. But her efforts may force her into some troubling alliances.

Cathy’s Review: In the beginning of time the Wealdend gathered the animals around them at their holy tree and quickened 5 species of animals: The gray squirrels, the wolf sisters, the marmots, the ants, and the folk (squirrels with a flap of skin attaching their wrists to their ankles.) Each of these groups were given a special gift that would be very important later. The folk however are given a trial before they are able to use their special gift. They must learn to listen before it’s too late. Soon though, their world becomes corrupted. There are too many power hungry of the gray squirrels, including their leader the Thane. They are trying to destroy and get rid of the folk and trying to rule the whole of their world. Will the poet, Pinecone and paper maker, Leafe be able to stop them from taking over before it’s too late?

Honestly my first thought about this book was, squirrels, really??? But the more that I got into the book and learned about the characters the more I liked it. The book is written for a target audience of about 8 to 12 years old and I think that they will love it. It reminds me a bit of The Rats of Nimh that I read as a middle school child and loved. I love the way that good wins in the end. I really enjoyed this book! I hope that there are more adventures connected with this one.

Expected publication: June 26th 2012

Book summaryWith the growth and exposure of Mormonism across the country and world, more and more people are curious about The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Although most Americans have an opinion about Mormonism, many of them admit they don’t really know what Mormons actually believe. Using scriptures, quotes, facts, engaging visual images, and even some humor, this one-of-a-kind book is designed to openly explain the beliefs, practices, history, and culture or Mormonism. Chapters answer such questions as “Are Mormons Christians?” “What happens inside LDS temples?” and many more. Chapters address topics such as LDS beliefs about marriage and family, the position of women in the Church, and LDS views about politics in America. There are even sections that dispel some common myths and misconceptions about Mormonism.

Written from the perspective of those who know and live the religion, the pages of Mormons: An Open Book invite you to come in, learn about, and better understand a growing body of faith in American and across the world: Mormonism.
Author guest post:

I never thought I’d be a writer (an artist? Yes. Teacher? Maybe. GQ cover model? Dream on man, dream on). In 2007 I had been teaching full-time as a religious educator for the LDS Church’s Seminaries and Institutes of Religion for about seven years when I had a fateful encounter with what has become one of my great friends, John Hilton III. John and I happened to be teaching at an Especially For Youth conference together out in Georgia when we met. At that conference, we both watched and admired each other teach, and together hit it off. John had just recently published a book with Deseret Book and he said to me, “You’ve got to write some of this stuff down that you are teaching and get it out there.” I demurred, and John—with his wonderfully persistent nature—kept pushing and pushing me over the following months to write.

I was able to put him off for a bit, but eventually he broke me down one day when he stopped by my office and said something like, “Okay, not saying you have to do it, but if you did write anything, what would it be about?” I opened up and said something along the lines of, “Well, I’d write this book that helps give LDS youth doctrinal and logical reasons for our standards and answer their common questions and call it something like WHY?” Before I knew it, John had pitched the idea to his product director at Deseret Book and called me and said they loved the idea. I put the phone down and told my wife, “Well, it looks like I’m writing a book.” WHY? went on to get published and become a Deseret Book bestseller, and the rest, for me anyway, is history. Since then I have written or co-authored four other books, the most recent being MORMONS: An Open Book.

MORMONS: An Open Book, to me, is the most important book I have written thus far. Written to a national, non-LDS audience, it comes fortuitously (even though I began writing it a year and a half ago) on the heels of the “Mormon Moment,” when there is increasing interest in all things Mormon, most notably with the recent nomination of Mitt Romney as the Republican candidate for US President. The approach of the book is, as the title implies, open, honest and straightforward. It attempts to answer in an engaging, visual, straightforward, and sometimes humorous way the main questions that most people have about the LDS Church. It is laced with stats, studies, scriptures, quotes, images, graphs, charts, and pictures as it answers these questions. Trust me, you won’t get bored. It is both an informational and visual smorgasbord, but totally digestible for the average person. It has some cool features, such as smart phone QR code links to videos to “Meet a Mormon” on mormon.org, and a section in each chapter called a “Mormyth” that dispels common misperceptions about Mormonism. In my totally biased opinion, it’s a book that all Latter-day Saints and those interested in Mormonism should get. It will better help anyone (artists, teachers, and—yes—GQ models) to clearly, concisely, accurately, and openly understand what people really want to know about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Author bio:  Anthony Sweat received his PhD in education from Utah State University and is a full-time religious educator for the LDS Church’s Seminaries and Institutes of Religion. He is a regular speaker at Especially For Youth, Education Week, Time Out For Women, and other LDS conferences, as well as an adjunct professor in the department of Church History and Doctrine at Brigham Young University. He is the author of several books and audio CD’s, including Mormons, An Open Book, Why? Powerful Answers and Practical Reasons for Living LDS Standards, and I’m Not Perfect. Can I Still Go To Heaven? He and his lovely wife, Cindy, are the parents of six children and reside in Utah.

Shadow of the Sun
by Laura Kreitzer
Ebook

4 Stars
Book Description (Amazon.com): Gabriella’s past is a mystery, but that never stopped her from achieving her goals. As a Supernatural Specialist, and far more intelligent than anyone her age, she was always ignored by her peers. Because of the isolation she always felt, she put her life and soul into her job. Being a Supernatural Specialist hasn’t given her the divine intervention she always longed for, until one day a shipment arrives from Italy containing three dead bodies with an uncanny ability to regenerate. Gabriella is frightened and intrigued, but not as scared as she becomes when a dark creature attacks her.

As the bodies come back to life, the plot takes an unexpected twist that you won’t see coming. The supernatural world only begins to unfold before her as angels appear, her dreams start to haunt her, and the very past she has forgotten comes back with startling clarity. Romance blooms, escape plans are made, an assassin is out to kill her, and death is only around the corner. But what is more terrifying than all of this is the fact she is the chosen one, the Illuminator, the one who will save them all.
Danielle’s Review: Gabby has a fascinating job researching the paranormal, but when three dead bodies arrive in her lab, her life is changed forever. She finds herself surrounded by supernatural beings with information that puts her in immediate danger. Discovering her divine birth and amazing abilities, Gabby must find a way to stay alive and save those she loves before the Ladies of Light destroy mankind.

This is a unique, well-crafted story that gives the Angel genre a fresh, new angle. Gabby plays the role of the strong, witty heroine well, but she isn’t above emotional pain or expression. I was drawn into her internal struggles and found the fantastic storyline to be believable and exciting.

Shadow of the Sun moves at quite a fast pace. I appreciated that, but must admit it sometimes felt as though it rushed forward without clear reason, and there were point of view switches that threw me off. I did find myself setting the book down frequently due to information overload, but this YA novel is a clever start to a series with great potential.

Ms. Kreitzer has done a remarkable job sharing a new world with details and a history that will engage readers of all ages. Her voice is strong and her writing determined. This adventure would thrill any paranormal reader, and the next story promises to be just as curious.

Content: mildly sensuous

Danielle Thorne

About the Author: Laura Kreitzer is a published fiction author who hails from western Kentucky. Her full-time 9-5 job used to be working in a lab devoted to water dye-tracing investigations at Western Kentucky University, though her passion was always writing.

Shadow of the Sun is the first book in the Timeless Series of books about a young woman, Gabriella, who is a doctor in charge of paranormal investigations at an influential government lab. A sudden delivery to her lab reveals the possibility that Angels actually exist and she must use her skills in both science and discernment to decide if the previously thought of science fiction is a reality.

The main character is similar to the author in many ways, the least of which is her incredible intelligence. Both Gabriella and Laura are both strong women who let very little stand in their way.

Becoming a published author is a harrowing, and often disheartening, experience. Laura bravely decided to pursue the path of self-publishing. The editing experience was an exercise in patience as version after version were carefully picked apart for proper grammar, spelling, formatting, and appropriate storyline continuity. After several months of Shadow of the Sun being available for purchase, she was offered a job and an offer to publish her first novel at Obsidian Mountain Publishing, which she accepted.

Although the storyline of Shadow of the Sun poured from her fingertips onto her computer screen, the process itself of bringing the book to life has been one of hard work and dedication and Laura has also decided to use this website not only to promote her book, but also for author support to encourage other writers to publish their work and become authors in the eyes of the rest of the world.
