Book summary: The Dead Man’s Treasure has been stolen! When Huber receives a revelatory message from a girl in Spain regarding the treasure’s location, the gang hatches a plan. Convincing their parents they are part of a study abroad program, Huber, Scott, and Hannah travel to Salamanca, Spain- an old city full of secrets.

While in pursuit of their goal, the group becomes dangerously entwined with a secret society called the Brotherhood of Coronado- a ruthless organization led by three self proclaimed kings, bent on reacquiring the lost fortunes of the Spanish empire for nefarious purposes.

Their only hope of finding the stolen treasure and escaping the city with their lives requires trust in new found friends and in a cloaked figure who reveals clues leading to the Brotherhood’s hiding place. But in a city of strangers, who can you trust?

With a plot that will keep you guessing, Huber Hill and the Brotherhood of Coronado is a study abroad adventure you’ll want to be a part of!

Cathy’s Review: Huber, Scott and Hannah have gotten back to normal after their first adventure with the Dead Man’s Treasure, but things won’t stay normal for long! The kids knew that the treasure had already been stolen, but they were unsure of who stole it and just where it ended up. Huber starts to get messages from a girl in Spain, named Yesenia, who claims to be the granddaughter of Carlos Salazar. Yesenia convinces Huber that she knows where the treasure is, and who stole it. All Huber, Hannah and Scott need to do is win a contest that the school will be having to win an all expenses trip to Salamanca, Spain, of course they’ll win, the contest will be rigged! But after getting to Spain, they quickly get caught up in the mystery and their Spanish teacher, Senior Mendoza ends up getting captured by the ruthless Brotherhood of Coronado, leaving the kids all alone in a foreign country. Who can they trust? And why does Huber keep seeing Juan Salazar everywhere he looks? This is a fast-paced adventure, packed with action and betrayal that you won’t want to put down!

I enjoyed this book. I actually liked the first book in this series best, but this one was a close second. I thought that there was plenty of action and adventure in the story. I liked the characters, and was genuinely surprised with who ended up being the traitors. I was also surprised at the twists and turns the story took, there’s no way I would have ever imagined that it would end the way it did! This book is a fun read, both for older elementary school kids an adults!

Fire and Ice reveals the cover and title for a brand new YA book coming to you May 14, 2013…

The Beautiful and The Cursed
by Page Morgan
On Sale: May 14, 2013
From Delacorte Books
Pages: 400
ISBN: 978-0-385-74311-2

Book Summary: Fans of Cassandra Clare’s Mortal Instruments series and Libba Bray’s Gemma Doyle trilogy will devour The Beautiful and the Cursed, a wholly original interpretation of gargoyle lore.
It was bizarre and inexplicable, but after it happened no one spoke of it and Ingrid Waverly was forced to leave her life in London behind. She had to trade a world full of fancy dresses and society events for Paris with her mother and younger sister, Gabby.

In Paris there are no grand balls or glittering parties, and, disturbingly, the house her twin brother Grayson found for them isn’t a house at all. It’s an abbey. A creepy, old abbey with a roof lined in stone gargoyles that one could almost mistake for living, breathing creatures.

And Grayson is missing.

Yet no one seems to be concerned about Grayson’s whereabouts save for Luc, a devastatingly handsome servant who has some secrets of his own.

There’s one secret about the city that he can’t keep hidden, though. There’s a murderer on the loose. And every day Grayson is missing means that there’s less of a chance he’s alive.

Ingrid is sure her twin isn’t dead–she can feel it deep in her soul–but she knows he’s in grave danger, and that it’s up to her and Gabby to find him before all hope is lost.

Only the path to him is twisted—and more deadly than she could ever imagine.

About Page Morgan: Page Morgan has been intrigued by les grotesques ever since she came across an old, black-and-white photograph of a Notre Dame gargoyle keeping watch over the city of Paris. The gargoyle mythologies she went on to research fed her imagination, and she became inspired to piece together her own story and mythology for these complex stone figures. Page lives in New England with her husband and their three children.

Help Chat With Ingrid Paulson Author of Valkyrie Rising

03 Oct, 2012 by in Valkyrie Rising Leave a comment

Hey Fire and Ice readers, we have a chance at an awesome giveaway to pass on! Just head on over to post some questions for Ingrid Paulson, author of Valkyrie Rising in the Epic Reads forum. She’ll be joining ER next month and they need questions. Follow this link to the forum and post one for your chance to win her book! Good luck!

About Valkyrie Rising: Nothing ever happens in Norway. But at least Ellie knows what to expect when she visits her grandmother: a tranquil fishing village and long, slow summer days. And maybe she’ll finally get out from under the shadow of her way-too-perfect big brother, Graham, while she’s there.

What Ellie doesn’t anticipate is Graham’s infuriating best friend, Tuck, tagging along for the trip. Nor did she imagine boys going missing amid rumors of impossible kidnappings. Least of all does she expect that something powerful and ancient will awaken in her and that strange whispers will urge Ellie to claim her place among mythological warriors. Instead of peace and quiet, suddenly there’s a lot for a girl from L.A. to handle on a summer sojourn in Norway! And when Graham vanishes, it’s up to Ellie—and the ever-sarcastic, if undeniably alluring, Tuck—to uncover the truth about all the disappearances and thwart the nefarious plan behind them.
Deadly legends, hidden identities, and tentative romance swirl together in one girl’s unexpectedly epic coming-of-age.

After Obsession

Hardcover, 305 pages

2.5 Stars
Book Summary From Goodreads:
Aimee and Alan have secrets. Both teens have unusual pasts and abilities they prefer to keep hidden. But when they meet each other, in a cold Maine town, they can’t stop their secrets from spilling out. Strange things have been happening lately, and they both feel that something-or someone- is haunting them. They’re wrong. Despite their unusual history and powers, it’s neither Aimee nor Alan who is truly haunted. It’s Alan’s cousin Courtney who, in a desperate plea to find her missing father, has invited a demon into her life-and into her body. Only together can Aimee and Alan exorcise the ghost. And they have to move quickly, before it devours not just Courtney but everything around her.

Filled with heart-pounding romance, paranormal activity, and rich teen characters to love-and introducing an exciting new YA voice, Steven Wedel-this novel is exactly what Carrie Jones fans have been waiting for. Meet your next obsession.

Review by ephrielle: It felt like a game. A couple of kids facing down an ancient demon and thinking they have a chance. Of course they are the right people for the job, as they are super prepared.
  • Special demon exorcism training and experience (A few internet searches)
  • Popourri
  • Make shift tent
  • Native American blood
  • Whole bunch of bravado
They can’t possibly go wrong.

I enjoy some good Native American lore and story. Unfortunately the poor young man in this story is alienated from his birthright and, by extension, proper knowledge of the lore. He sure doesn’t lack the desire or the gumption. I felt sorry for him. It was so painfully clear that he was stumbling around in the dark. Sometimes his youth really hurt the power of the lore over the story. Even his rock solid proof didn’t seem like a proper foundation upon which to stake his “helpful delusions”.

The ending was rather cheesy for my taste. I just didn’t think the several parts worked well together. Not a terrible read, but it was definitely a book about three kids facing off against all odds and definitely being out of their depth.

Favorite Quote: “Mom, I promised to behave. It wasn’t easy. I mean, she couldn’t help herself. She was all over this hunk of Navajo manhood and I had to keep telling her I’d promised not to let her violate me. Eventually she wore herself out and fell asleep.”

Content: Moderate violence

About Carrie Jones: Carrie Jones likes Skinny Cow fudgsicles and potatoes. She does not know how to spell fudgsicles. This has not prevented her from writing books. She lives with her cute family in Maine, but she grew up in Bedford, NH where she once had a séance with cool uber-comedian Sarah Silverman.

The Meyers brothers are from Bedford, too, so you’d think it would make Carrie funnier, coming from Bedford N.H. Obviously, something didn’t work.

Carrie has a large, skinny white dog and a fat cat. Both like fudgicles. Only the cat likes potatoes. This may be a reason for the kitty’s weight problem (Shh… don’t tell). Carrie has always liked cowboy hats but has never owned one. This is a very wrong thing. She graduated from Vermont College’s MFA program for writing. She has edited newspapers and poetry journals and has recently won awards from the Maine Press Association and also been awarded the Martin Dibner Fellowship as well as a Maine Literary Award.

Here’s the lowdown about Carrie…

1. Carrie can not drink coffee. It makes her insane. Do not give her caffeine.
2. Carrie is very responsive to loving strokes on the hair, kind of like a puppy. However, do not do this without asking first unless you are a ridiculously handsome man or an editor who is about to offer her a trillion dollars for the first draft of her novel.
3. Carrie is secretly really, really shy even though she’s pathetically outgoing in person. She has a very hard time calling people. So, if you want to talk to her, make the first move. And, if you’re her in-Maine female best friend, Jennifer, do NOT get mad at her because she is so bad at returning emails.
4. Carrie sometimes wears mismatched socks, if you do not think this is cool, do not tell her. You will hurt her feelings.
5. Carrie really, really wants you to like her books. Please like her books. PLEEEAASSSEEEE. She’ll be your best friend forever. That is, if you want a friend who is shy about calling and emailing and who wears mismatched socks and can’t drink caffeine and likes being pet on the head. Hhmmm….
6. Carrie is not above begging.
7. Carrie, like Belle in TIPS ON HAVING A GAY (ex) BOYFRIEND drinks Postum. It’s for the same reason, too.
8. Carrie loves Great Pyrenees dogs. They are huge and white, and furry and it looks like they have white eyeliner and mascara on, which is way too cute. Do you have one? Send a picture!
9. Carrie lives in Maine. She has a hard time with this in the winter. It is bleak in Maine in the winter. Imagine everything shades of gray and brown and no green anywhere except for in people’s noses. This is Maine in Winter. Maine in summer is the best place in the world, so it’s a trade-off. Feel free to invite Carrie to your house in the winter, but not if it’s in Greenland, Canada, or anywhere north of Florida.
10. Forget that. She’d still probably come.

About Steven E. Wedel: Born and raised an Okie, Wedel typically sets his stories somewhere in Oklahoma’s diverse landscape. He began writing in high school in the early 1980s and never stopped. Not Your Average Fairy Tale Blog Tour, Review and Kindle Giveaway

02 Oct, 2012 by in YA fiction 34 comments

Fire and Ice is today’s stop on the Blog Tour for Not Your Average Fairytale by Chantele Sedgwick. Here’s what we thought about this fun book…
Not Your Average Fairy Tale
by Chantele Sedgwick
Paperback, 224 pages
Published: August 1, 2012
by Crescent Moon Press
ISBN: 1937254658
Book source: Author
4 Stars
Book Summary from Goodreads: Armed with wings and a blue wand, being a fairy godmother should be easy … unless your name is Ash, and you’re a dude.

Ash Summerland has it all–good looks, popularity, and the best grades at The Academy of Magical Beings. Ready to complete his last assignment in order to graduate, Ash is confident he will get the apprenticeship he wants. When he opens the letter from the Council, he is shocked to discover he has been assigned to apprentice Lady Shenelle, Keeper of Happy Endings. A.K.A. the head fairy godmother. Ash is forced to grant three wishes to a troubled human girl named Kendall, and ultimately give her a “happy ever after”. But Kendall turns out to be more than he bargained for. Still grieving over her father’s death, Kendall doesn’t want anything to do with him. And worst of all, she doesn’t believe in happy endings.

Cathy’s Review: Ash Summerland knows that he’s got it made! He’s a handsome guy going to school at The Academy of Magical Beings, and did I mention that he’s also at the top of his class. He just knows that  he will get to Apprentice Master Night and be a Sandman, just like he’s always wanted. But things go horribly wrong when he opens the envelope containing his letter from the Council about his apprenticeship.  Instead of being able to be an apprentice for the Sandman, he’s going to be an apprentice for Lady Shenelle, the Fairy Godmother. How can this happen, Ash is a guy, not a girl. He goes straight to Lady Shenelle to see if she can fix this dreadful mistake, but is told that the Council feels that he needs to spend some time working for her. He must complete this apprenticeship to graduate and he must get his assignment to make three wishes that Ash will then grant and do a good job doing it, or all of his hard work will go out the window! Things get even worse when Ash meets his assignment, Kendall, she’s a young lady that has been severely hurt, both in an accident and after by everyone around her. She has no desire to believe that Ash is her “Fairy Godmother” and she can trust him and ask him for the wishes of her heart. She’s seen enough to know that “Happily Ever After” isn’t just around the corner. Can Ash convince her that there can be happy endings?

This was a cute take on a Fairy Tale. I loved Ash, he was so funny trying to do what a fairy godmother would do, but really having no idea because he is a guy not a girl. Kendall was a sweet girl, I loved how vulnerable she was about life after her accident, you kind of get glimpses of her life before the accident through what her friends or her sister say about her, but you don’t really witness that first hand.  This book had action, a touch of romance, bad guys and good guys who try to teach the bad guys a lesson. I’ve always been a big  believer in happily ever after, so I enjoy when that happens in books. I also really like that this one left itself wide open for a sequel, I love to read books that have sequels!

Content: Clean

About the author: Chantele Sedgwick grew up playing the harp and singing. Little did anyone know, she always had stories floating around in her head. After she had her second baby, she finally realized she should probably write them down. Pursuing publication was something she only dreamed about, but now her dream is coming true. The discovery of a first love, first kisses, and the many emotions teens go through, pushed Chantele to find her niche in writing teen fiction. Some of her stories share a few of her own experiences, but most of them are just fantasies she wished happened to her as a teen. She’s a sucker for a great love story and always enjoys a happy ending. She tends to have a thing for the “bad boys” in books, unless they’re total jerks. Then she’ll root for the good guy. When she’s not writing, Chantele can be found spending time with her husband and three beautiful kids, or driving her sisters crazy with random story ideas. NOT YOUR AVERAGE FAIRY TALE is her first book.

Erasing Time Blog Tour Kick Off, Guest Post and Giveaway

01 Oct, 2012 by in book giveaway 27 comments

Fire and Ice is pleased to announce we will be hosting the official blog tour for Erasing Time by C.J. Hill!
We have an exclusive guest post below with the author about her “playlist” for the book.

Erasing Time Playlist–or lack thereof

“Some authors listen to playlists while they write their books. I envy those writers because apparently they can multi task so well they’re able to hum along to music and write at the same time.

This is the typical thing I hear while I’m writing:

Knock sounds on my door, reminding me that I’m not really 400 years in the future with a hot guy being chased by mob assassins. I am, instead, a mother of teenagers.

Son: (whining) The computer is locked!

Me: That’s because you need to do your jobs.

Son: But I did my jobs.

Me: No you didn’t. You’ve got dishes this week and the sink is over flowing.

Thirty seconds later

Son: Can you unlock the computer now?

Me: There is no possible way you did the dishes in thirty seconds. Go finish them.

Thirty seconds later

Son: Can you unlock the computer now?

Me: AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!! Let me write!!!

So yeah, I don’t listen to a lot of music while I write. However, since MC Hammer’s song Can’t Touch this did help inspire Erasing Time, it really should have playlist status. You may wonder—and you should—how a song MC Hammer wrote about how awesome MC Hammer is, helped inspire a time traveling dystopian romance novel. I’ll explain. (If you’ve never heard the song, you can check out the official video at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otCpCn0l4Wo)

When the song Can’t Touch This first came out 1990, I had never heard the phrase “Can’t touch this”. I had no idea what it meant. In fact, even though MC Hammer was singing in English I had no idea what any of the song’s lyrics meant. Take this part:

Yeah… can’t touch this

Look, man can’t touch this

You better get hype, boy, because you know you can’t touch this

Ring the bell, school’s back in. Can’t touch this

I didn’t know whether “Can’t touch this” was a good thing, a bad thing, or perhaps a threat. I had to ask my younger and much cooler nephew to decipher the song for me. It made me think about how much slang we use, and how English doesn’t make much sense if you don’t know the slang. Really, I pity the poor immigrants who come to this country and are confronted by phrases like: “Has the cat got your tongue?” Or “Hold your horses.”

Immigrants must all wonder what we do in our free time.

Anyway, I started thinking about time travel and how you couldn’t go very far in either direction before English became undecipherable. Don’t believe it? Go watch a Shakespeare play. Chances are, unless you already know the story or you studied Shakespearean English in school, you’ll be completely lost.

Writers who write historical or time travel novels know this, of course. Usually we give a flavor or hint of the old language without being true to it. For Erasing Time I wanted to use the language shift as part of the plot. When Sheridan and Taylor are sucked into the future, historian wordsmiths are appointed to translate and interpret for them. (One of whom is a hot guy.) The only way Sheridan and Taylor can communicate secretly is to speak in slang. Which works quite well. You can cover just about any topic using slang, including escaping from mad scientists in a dystopian government.

And MC Hammer would have had no problem getting things by future scientists. Therefore, he is a play list unto himself.”
Thanks to C. J for choosing Fire and Ice to host her tour and for the fun guest post!

Book Summary From Harper Collins: When twins Sheridan and Taylor wake up 400 years in the future, they find a changed world: domed cities, no animals, and a language that’s so different, it barely sounds like English. And the worst news: They can’t go back home.

The twenty-fifth-century government transported the girls to their city hoping to find a famous scientist to help perfect a devastating new weapon. The same government has implanted tracking devices in the citizens, limiting and examining everything they do. Taylor and Sheridan have to find a way out of the city before the government discovers their secrets. To complicate matters, the moblike Dakine has interest in getting hold of them too. The only way for the girls to elude their pursuers is to put their trust in Echo, a guy with secrets of his own. The trio must put their faith in the unknown to make a harrowing escape into the wilds beyond the city.

Full of adrenaline-injected chases and heartbreaking confessions, Erasing Time explores the strength of the bonds between twins, the risks and rewards of trust, and the hard road to finding the courage to fight for what you believe in.
About the Author:  C. J. Hill is the mother of twins. They aren’t identical, but this doesn’t mean she always calls them by the right name. In fact, she occasionally calls all her children by the wrong names (she has five) and has even been known to throw the dog’s name into the mix. Laugh now, but you’ll do the same thing when you have kids.
If C. J. had a time machine and could visit another century, she would probably go to the Regency era instead of the future. According to all the novels she’s read, the past was filled with a multitude of dashing lords and viscounts who were always on the lookout for damsels in distress, whereas the future is populated by scary dystopian societies.

Ava/Aphrodite was the goddess of love and yet commitment was a totally different deal….

Persephone was urged to marry one man, yet longed for another….

James/Hermes loved to make trouble for others-but never knew true loss before….

Henry/Hades’s solitary existence had grown too wearisome to continue. But meeting Kate Winters gave him a new hope….

Five original novellas of love, loss and longing and the will to survive throughout the ages.
