David Farland Family Tragedy Book Bomb

10 Apr, 2013 by in Uncategorized Leave a comment

On Wednesday April 4th, bestselling author Dave Farland’s (aka Dave Wolverton’s) 16 year old son was critically injured in a long boarding accident. “He suffers from severe brain trauma, a cracked skull, broken pelvis and tail bone, burnt knees, bruised lungs, broken ear drums, road rash, pneumonia, and is currently in a coma. His family has no insurance.” as stated in the Examiner Press release.

Fire and Ice is one of many blogs participating in a book bomb for the author and his family to help raise funds for the medical bills which continue to mount. There are many ways to contribute which you can find on this website. 100% of the funds from Dave’s two books Nightingale and Million Dollar Outlines will be donated to the cause.

Our prayers go out to the Farland family and we hope you will post this information on your site today as part of the book bomb.

Author Bio from Amazon: David Farland is an award-winning, New York Times bestselling author with dozens of books to his credit. He began his career writing short fiction as a prize writer, which vaulted him into prominence in the mid-1980s. He has written science fiction under his own name, Dave Wolverton, including the highly praised “On My Way to Paradise,” which won the Philip K. Dick Memorial Special Award for “Best Novel in the English Language.”

David has also written novels in the Star Wars and Mummy Universes, and has worked as a videogame designer, most notably for Starcraft’s Brood War.
In 1999 he set the Guinness Record for the World’s Largest single-person, single book signing.
In the mid-1990s he began to follow his love for writing fantasy under the pen name David Farland, where he became best known for his international bestselling Runelords series; though he has also won the Whitney Award for best novel of the year for his historical novel “In the Company of Angels,” and he also won the International Book Award for Best Young Adult Novel of the Year, along with the Hollywood Book Award for Best Book of the year for his Young Adult fantasy thriller, “Nightingale.”

Once Upon a Twilight

One of our fellow book bloggers and affiliates Yara from Once Upon a Twilight suffered the loss of her home in two separate fires this weekend. We are so glad everyone is safe as no one was in the home when it caught fire, but they lost everything and we are hoping to help.
Yara far left and Heather second from right at BBC with fellow book bloggers.

If you’ve ever met Yara you know how friendly, fun, hard working and genuine she is. She her husband and two boys are going to have a long road to rebuild ahead of them, which is where you can help.
TwilightMoms, Eve’s Fan Garden and Late Bloomer Online have all posted the story to spread the word and a PayPal account has been set up for donations here. Every penny will go directly to Yara. Please give what you can, even if it’s only a dollar. And send your prayers to the Santos family.

Chile Relief Update

24 Mar, 2010 by in terremoto 1 comment

Many of you have been asking me about the Chile relief efforts we have going. I started out just wanting to help a couple of families and now it has grown. We have giveaways going for all who donate. To date we have sent 11 boxes of aid to Talca, San Miguel, and Llo Lleo, Chile. They went to families I knew there and are being directly distributed to those affected by the earthquake.

We have six more boxes ready to go but I am waiting for shipping donations as each box costs $55 to send via flat rate priority mail. We will keep sending as fast as we can! Recently we had another request from my friends in Maipu, Chile. They would like to work together with us to distribute aid. If you can contribute even a dollar, we have a fund set up at PayPal under the email heatoddgardner@yahoo.com 100% of the funds go directly to Chile. Or, if you want to donate items…here are supplies we have been asked for:

seeds
rain gear
tarps
ziploc baggies
winter clothes
non-perishable food items
formula
diapers
hygiene kit items: trial sized shampoo, combs, soap, razors, toothbrushes, wash cloths etc.
toys
Spanish books
survival items

Contact me via email for addresses of where to send the items. Thanks so much. This has been a wonderful experience and I have enjoyed hearing from those I love in Chile. They have asked us to pray that the winter rains don’t arrive before they can get shelter put together for those living outdoors. Fuerza CHILE!

8×10 Photo Print from MightyMarce

I have always enjoyed taking pictures and capturing moments. About 2 years ago (late 2007) my hubby and I bought a DSLR in anticipation of our son’s birth, and my interest escalated into a full-fledged hobby. I began obsessively taking pictures of my kiddo, occasionally managing to capture others things around me as well. ; )

My favorite lens is my nifty fifty. It stays on my camera the vast majority of the time. This is partially because I am a huge fan of natural light for photography, and thus use the low light capabilities of that lens often. I’m getting better at using my flash, especially when I am forced to we’ve been very lucky to have INCREDIBLE natural light in our homes, but other places we travel to aren’t so lucky) but I always prefer my natural light shots.

I use Lightroom2 for organizing and editing photos. Sometimes I’ll go for long stretches of time where I don’t have the time/inclination to edit and so will post lots of SOOC pictures. other times I’ll get really creative with Lightroom’s tools (and usually tag the photo with “lightroom” if that’s the case). Maybe one day I’ll get brave enough to try to learn Photoshop, but for right now I’m too cheap and too intimidated to try. ; ) I also mostly shoot in JPEG right now, which serves me well enough. Perhaps one day when I have a faster computer with more space I’ll switch to RAW…

Set of Three Vina Del Mar Cards

07 Mar, 2010 by in Uncategorized 2 comments

This set of cards was donated to the Chile earthquake relief effort by MightyMarce…
Hi, my name is Marcy. I’m 28 years old, live in California, and am a wife and mother to an adorable little boy.
I spent the first 11 years of my life living in Chile. Every summer my family would drive to the popular beach town of Vina del Mar for some time together, and fun in the sun. I have so many fond memories of those summer escapes.
This is a set of 4 cards, each featuring one image taken in Vina del Mar, Chile:
*A runner on the beach passing straw huts
*Gentle waves under a pier full of small shops
*My husband, eating an ice cream cone whioe overlooking the ocean
*A stray dog, such a classic sight, who followed us as he smelled the leftover pizza in our take-home containers.
Each photograph has been processed into black and white, while the cardstock they are printed on give it a touch of warmth that lends a vintage-esque feel to the photos.
The cards measure 4.5″ x 6.25″ folded and are printed on 62lb GreenPix Photo Matte paper, made 100% from post consumer recycled fiber (no trees were harmed in the making of these cards). Each card comes with matching envelope.
Cards are blank on the inside, making them great for any occasion– birthday, thank you, or just a simple hello to a friend. My shop name and url are printed on the back of each card.
The set is encased in a clear plastic box, wrapped in ribbon, and shipped to you in a sturdy and safe cardboard box.

Plan for Chile Earthquake Relief

07 Mar, 2010 by in santiago 1 comment

Some of you may have noticed I am running a little behind on my book reviews this week. I’ve read three books and haven’t posted them yet. My mind has been occupied with the earthquake in Chile as I lived there for a year and a half. I love the people there like family. I have contacted some of them online and it is apparent that there are many in need. Some have lost their homes and have a family members missing. As a result I am hoping some of you will contribute to a Chile relief fund. 100% of the proceeds will go directly to families there. Each day I will be posting silent auction items that others have generously donated instead of a giveaway. Please be generous in prayers if you have nothing to give. Thank you!
