The Eternal Ones by Kirsten Miller
Publisher: Razorbill/Penguin
Release: August 2010
http://www.theeternalones.com/

Book Summary (from Penguin): Haven Moore can’t control her visions of a past with a boy called Ethan, and a life in New York that ended in fiery tragedy. In our present, she designs beautiful dresses for her classmates with her best friend Beau. Dressmaking keeps her sane, since she lives with her widowed and heartbroken mother in her tyrannical grandmother’s house in Snope City, a tiny town in Tennessee. Then an impossible group of coincidences conspire to force her to flee to New York, to discover who she is, and who she was.
In New York, Haven meets Iain Morrow and is swept into an epic love affair that feels both deeply fated and terribly dangerous. Iain is suspected of murdering a rock star and Haven wonders, could he have murdered her in a past life? She visits the Ouroboros Society and discovers a murky world of reincarnation that stretches across millennia. Haven must discover the secrets hidden in her past lives, and loves, before all is lost and the cycle begins again.

This is a really tricky review for me to write because I had a hard time figuring out why this book stuck with me so much. It’s been several days since I finished reading it and it has been with me the entire time, even while reading two other books. I won The Eternal Ones in an ARC giveaway and when I first picked it up I almost stopped reading after the first few pages. Everything was too “in your face” for me…the best friend, the naivity of Haven, the contant sexual talk, near nudity and her grandmother’s personality. As a whole, the book read more like an adult book for me rather than a YA book. There was too much mature content as filler. I kept picturing the characters as older that High School even though the author tries to fir them into that age group. I don’t picture 17 year olds getting married, traveling to Italy or being involved in a murder trial with a 900 year old attorney. However, since the premise of the book is that the characters are really older and reincarnated I suppose it may work.

All of this aside, I must say I really loved the book. It spoke to me. I soaked in the settings, lived the history, the mystery and the main protagonists. Still scratching my head about what to say but I give it four stars because it is rare that a book stays with me so long and deep after I close the pages.

It doesn’t help that Aura’s new friend Zachary is so understanding—and so very alive. His support means more to Aura than she cares to admit. Intrinsical
Yara Silva Trilogy #1
Author: Lani Woodland
Released: August 17th 2010
Publisher: Pendrell Publishing

Summary: Sixteen-year-old Yara Silva has always known that ghosts walk alongside the living. Her grandma, like the other females in her family, is a Waker, someone who can see and communicate with ghosts. Yara grew up watching her grandmother taunted and scorned for this unusual ability and doesn’t want that to be her future. She has been dreading the day when she too would see ghosts, and is relieved that the usually dominant Waker gene seems to have skipped her, letting her live a normal teenage life. However, all that changes for Yara on her first day at her elite boarding school when she discovers the gene was only lying dormant. She witnesses a dark mist attack Brent, a handsome fellow student, and rushes to his rescue. Her act of heroism draws the mist’s attention, and the dark spirit begins stalking her. Yara finds herself entrenched in a sixty-year-old curse that haunts the school, threatening not only her life, but the lives of her closest friends as well. Yara soon realizes that the past she was trying to put behind her isn’t going to go quietly.
Lani Woodland has been an avid reader since elementary school when she first discovered the Babysitters Club and Sweet Valley Twins series. In sixth grade she began writing plays and recruiting (with force when necessary) her friends to act them out. Most of these early works were inspired by She-Ra, the epitome of girl power to her young self.

She graduated from BYU with a BS in Family Science. Lani has always loved scary stories, and has a hard time enjoying any book without at least a little romance in it. She lives in Southern California with her husband, their two children and a large collection of board games. She has worked as a spot-welder, babysitter, janitor, photographer, gymnastics coach, and movie extra. She enjoys bonfires at the beach, hole-in-the-wall restaurants, speed talking, chocolate as a cure-all, and the word “precisely”.

Lani was kind enough to answer some interview questions for us about her book…

The best way to tell you about Intrinsical is to give you the jacket flap. I came up with the idea for Intrinsical, not the whole plot but the general idea for the book at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA. It’s an old cruise ship that is now a hotel/museum. While
taking the guided tour there the guide informed us the first class pool was rumored to be haunted. Standing on the second floor of the pool room looking down over the pool I totally believed it. It was an eerie room. It was cold and there was an unsettling feeling that crept
over me as we were there. That moment of feeling watched and creeped out is where the first idea for Intrinsical was formed.

What books have inspired you and who are your favorite authors?
Almost every book I’ve read has inspired me. I can usually find something in it I liked and take away with me. My list of favorite authors is huge and varied. I read a little bit of everything (mysteries, paranormal, fantasy, urban fantasy, romance, classics and historical) so I have authors in almost every category that I love.

How did you choose Brasil as the setting for your book?
I chose Brazil to be part of Yara’s heritage because my husband lived there for a while and loved it. I wanted her to have an interesting background and I could just picture her grandmother in the places my husband described, so I thought it would be cool to have Yara’s father be from Brazil.

What advice would you give to aspiring writers?
I think the best advice I can give is to never give up and to listen to the feedback you’re given. When I first started submitting Intrinsical it was radically different than the book that got published. At a writer’s conference I went to, the agent asked if I could get rid of one of my
three main characters. She thought he was too confusing. If I could, then she would be interested in reading more. I had no idea how I was going to do that but I said yes. Then I brainstormed with my friends and came up with a way to make that happen. The agent didn’t end up offering representation but her one suggestion was the catalyst for a major revision and helped improve the whole story. Also for Intrinsical there were many times when I was tempted to give up but kept working on it and submitting until it was picked up.

Have you taken any retreats or paranormal trips lately?
In the past, I visited the Queen Mary and the Whaley House in San Diego, both rumored to be haunted, but that was several years ago. Both were fun to visit and creepy!

What is a waker?
A Waker is someone who can see and communicate with ghosts. There are different levels of Wakerness. Some Wakers, really strong ones, develop other abilities, as well.

Any new books in the works and is there a sequel planned? I
I’m currently working on the next book in the Intrinsical series. I’m also working on another YA series and just submitted two stories to an anthology.

Lani’s website can be found at http://www.laniwoodland.com/

As a giveaway, author Lani Woodland has offered to write YOUR NAME into the sequel for Intrinsical. This contest is international and ends Decmber 15, 2010. Enter here for a chance at your name in print!

Doomed love.

Marked as special at an early age, Jacinda knows her every move is watched. But she longs for freedom to make her own choices. When she breaks the most sacred tenet among her kind, she nearly pays with her life. Until a beautiful stranger saves her. A stranger who was sent to hunt those like her. Shadow of The Sun ARC Giveaway

Shadow of The Sun
by Laura Kreitzer
Hardcover, 524 pages
Published February 22nd 2010
by iUniverse
ISBN 1450211758
5 stars

Summary: Gabriella’s past is a mystery, but that never stopped her from achieving her goals. As a supernatural specialist, and far more intelligent than anyone her age, she has always been ignored by her peers. Because of the isolation she has always felt, she put her life and soul into her job. Being a supernatural specialist hasn’t given her the divine intervention she always longed for, until one day a shipment arrives from Italy containing three dead bodies with an uncanny ability to regenerate. Gabriella is frightened and intrigued, but not as scared as she becomes when a dark creature attacks her.

As the bodies come back to life, the plot takes an unexpected twist that you won’t see coming. The supernatural world only begins to unfold before her as angels appear, her dreams start to haunt her, and the very past she has forgotten comes back with startling clarity. Romance blooms, escape plans are made, an assassin is out to kill her, and death is only around the corner. But what is more terrifying than all of it is the fact she is the chosen one, the Illuminator, the one who will save them all.

I savored the story and the characters in Shadow of The Sun whom I feel like I connected with on many levels. The main hero, Andrew comforts and supports Gabriella while being a perfect gentleman. Laura Kreitzer creates an emotionally riveting mystery full of myth , magic and romance. I gave it five stars and would recommend it to all of my adult friends!

“Laura Kreitzer is a newly published fiction author who hails from western Kentucky. While her full-time 9-5 job includes working in a lab devoted to water dye-tracing investigations at Western Kentucky University, her passion lies in writing.”

See our original review of the first book in her Timeless series and our full April interview with her here.

How did you come up with the idea for your series?
I told my Grandmother that I wanted to write my own book and she said Angels sounded like a good idea. So, I let the idea simmer in my head for a few months until I decided I didn’t want to write the typical angel. Actually, I didn’t want to write about anything that anyone else had ever written about. And . . . tada! Shadow of the Sun.

Do you feel like you relate to any of your characters?
I relate to each of my characters for different things. But I probably relate better to the main character the most, mainly because of her anti-social nature. With each character I brought out something in me–whether it be their evil side, their loving side, or their need to protect.

Describe your path to being published. I researched for about 5 months on what I wanted to do. Traditional publishing is a great way to go . . . if you can get someone to actually publish your book. Well, I didn’t want someone to tell me that I wasn’t good enough to publish my book. The whole process was one I didn’t think I could handle mentally. So, I saved money and went the self publishing way through iUniverse. I picked out my font, the layout of my book, I had a graphic designer take my idea (with help of some friends 😉 to make the beautiful cover. I literally did all the things a publisher would do. You have to be dedicated to go self publishing, that is for sure. And here I am today! My book is sold in over 30 countries, through B&N.com, Amazon.com, and Books-a-Million. From what I hear, Borders will also be picking up my book. We’ll see.

What things inspire your writing?
My Muse, friend, and Beta Lisa! It sounds silly, but sometimes I can’t even write unless I am talking with her on messenger. She cracks the whip, is a wonderful, dedicated person, and loves my characters. Especially Joseph. Oh, she is going to love book two, then! 😀 Well, she already does. The fact that when I reread some of the things I wrote and go “I actually wrote that?” is another thing that inspires me. Sometimes I don’t realize I can write the beautiful things I do until I reread much later. Sounds cheesy . . . well, I’m just a cheesy person! Also, sometimes I really try to feel what my character is feeling. Hell, through the whole Abelie scene I was crying my eyes out! So I understand how people feel when they email me and tell me that I made them cry. I cried too!

Any photos of the places you imagine in your scenes in Italy?
Well, I just tried to google pictures in Italy to see if I could find something like the picture I have in my head but I was unable to find what I was looking for. Close, but not close enough to use. My mother has been to Italy several times in her lifetime and some of her pictures come to mind when I think of Italy. Of course, in my mind it isn’t these large cities, but small villages thousands of years ago, or a vast, empty field with mountains in the distance for the scene in the book. We’ll see more of Italy in book two!

What advice would you give to aspiring authors?
Write! Always write, never stop. Doesn’t matter if it is bad or in need of major help . . . WRITE! You can’t aspire to be a writer if you only dream of it. You must act upon it. And never, ever give up.

Thanks so much to Laura Kreitzer, one of site affiliates and favorite reads of 2010. Visit her amazing site at http://laurakreitzer.com/

Tera Lynn Childs Giveaway and Interview

Forgive My Fins
By Tera Lynn Childs
Released June 1, 2010
Published by Katherine Tegen Books

Lily Sanderson has a secret, and it’s not that she has a huge crush on gorgeous swimming god Brody Bennett, who makes her heart beat flipper-fast. Unrequited love is hard enough when you’re a normal teenage girl, but when you’re half human, half mermaid like Lily, there’s no such thing as a simple crush.

Lily’s mermaid identity is a secret that can’t get out, since she’s not just any mermaid – she’s a Thalassinian princess. When Lily found out three years ago that her mother was actually a human, she finally realized why she didn’t feel quite at home in Thalassinia, and she’s been living on land and going to Seaview high school ever since, hoping to find where she truly belongs. Sure, land has its problems – like her obnoxious, biker boy neighbor Quince Fletcher – but it has that one major perk – Brody. The problem is, mermaids aren’t really the casual dating type – when they “bond,” it’s for life.

When Lily’s attempt to win Brody’s love leads to a tsunami-sized case of mistaken identity, she is in for a tidal wave of relationship drama, and she finds out, quick as a tailfin flick, that happily-ever-after never sails quite as smoothly as you planned.

Forgive My Fins made it on to my very favorite reads of 2010. It’s a splashtastic fun read that earned 5 stars from Fire and Ice. Here’s what author Tera Lynn Childs had to say in our exclusive interview…

Forgive My Fins is about Mermaids, what drove you to write about them?
I’ve dreamed of being a mermaid since I saw the movie Splash in elementary school. I was a competitive swimmer growing up and I love the water in all forms. It was a combination of those things and a summer in Florida spent wishing I were a mermaid that inspired my mermaid stories.

If you could have bonded with someone as Lily did who would it be and why?
As a single girl, that’s a tricky question, isn’t it? But my crush du jour is Brian J. Smith from Stargate: Universe. He’s actually the guy I have in mind for Thane, one of the boys in my upcoming Medusa girls trilogy. Besides being easy on the eyes, he’s a Juilliard grad, which means he’s got real acting chops. Talent is oh-so-attractive.

What other books have you written? And is there a sequel to any in the works?
Forgive My Fins is my third published book. My first two, Oh. My. Gods. and Goddess Boot Camp, were about a cross-country-running California girl uprooted to a tiny Greek island and trying to fit in at a school for the descendants of the gods. No more books are currently planned for that series. Fins Are Forever, the sequel to Forgive My Fins, will be out in June and I have a new trilogy starting in October about monster-hunting triplet descendants of Medusa.

Favorite Mermaid items on etsy, cause we know you shop there…
I bought my editor an adorable mermaid dish (http://www.etsy.com/transaction/19980626) and I love the mermaid Scrabble tile necklaces. I’ve bought a few for giveaways. But I actually haven’t bought myself any mermaid gear from Etsy. It’s probably about time.

Where and who would you cast for Forgive my Fins?
Well, I would set Forgive My Fins in South Florida, in a small Atlantic town with a beautiful beach. As for an ideal cast … I’m not so sure. The images in my mind as I wrote the book were Shakira (as Lily), Eric Dane (as Quince), and Brody Jenner (as Brody). But they aren’t exactly right for the roles. I’m open to suggestions.

Favorite munchie?
I go in phases. Recently it was cotton candy, for a while it was Oreos. Right now, because it’s the holiday season, I’m going to have to say my mom’s Nuts and Bolts. It’s like Chex Mix, made with all kinds of Chex, Cheerios and pretzel sticks. Drizzled with melted (vegan) butter, Worcestershire sauce (unfortunately not vegan), thyme and beau monde spice. Baked and stirred for a couple hours. It’s my favorite Christmas-time midnight snack.

Book Review: Santa Maybe by Aubrey Mace

09 Dec, 2010 by in santa maybe 19 comments

Paperback, 194 pages
Published September 8th 2009
by Cedar Fort
ISBN 1599553120
4 stars

Dear Santa,
I’ve been a good girl this year. (Well . . . pretty good.) I have a nice life and there’s only one thing that I really want one thing that’s missing. If you happen to have an extra one lying around your workshop, I would really like a husband. I promise to take good care of him.

Love, Abbie

With a successful bakery to run, super cute nieces and nephews to spoil, and plenty of good friends to keep her company, Abbie’s not about to start crying over the fact that she s doesn’t have a boyfriend to spend Christmas with. But when her sister convinces her to write a note to Santa, Abbie has no idea that a little Christmas magic is about to land her the man of her dreams. Or rather, that man is about to land smack dab on the floor in front of her Christmas tree with no memory of how he got there.

Now Abbie and Ben have to figure out where he came from, who he really is, and if he’s actually available.

I picked this book up for a light, fun Christmas read and that’s exactly what it was. Aubrey Mace, author of Spare Change and My Fairy Grandmother offers up a spicy scenario of what might happen should our grown up Christmas wishes actually came true. This is a perfect book for those who once believed. The resolution is a little far fetched for the cynic that I’ve become, but Abbie and Ben make it work. My only wish was that we knew a little bit more of each of them. Santa Maybe is a short sweet read with lessons about learning to trust after you have become jaded and the power of possibilities. I walked away form it with more hope and holiday cheer. Santa Maybe would be fun gift for Christmas, so we are offering one to you! Simply comment below to enter. Contest ends December 12, 2010.
