Growing Pains Blog Tour

05 Apr, 2012 by in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Fire and Ice is today’s stop on the official blog tour for Growing Pains: Kendra’s Diaries hosted by Stormi at Lightning Book Promotions
Growing Pains
by K.P. Smith
E-book; 268 pages
Publication Date: May 25, 2011
by Doin It Publishing
ISBN: 0615390307
Book Source: Author
4 stars
Summary From the Author: Kendra’s Dairies is the first book in the series chronicling the journey of Kendra Foster from adolescence to adulthood. I aspire to encourage, entertain and inspire young adults. Life has its ups and downs, its bumps and its bruises. But with perseverance, determination and faith you can be all you were born to be. Never Give Up!
Danielle’s Review: Kendra is a middle school aged young girl, preparing herself for the rigors and expectations of high school. Her brush with failure her first time trying out for cheerleading is easy to relate to; her later attempts to tackle the sport once more are admirable and set the course of this story’s theme about never giving up. Kendra never despairs long, and she faces her obstacles with courage and determination.
Like any young teen, Kendra must deal with family problems beyond her understanding while trying to handle the overwhelming experience of her first crush. It was refreshing to read about a boy with real feelings for a girl, emotions that he treated as respectfully as he did the young lady. Kendra’s friends are authentic and open the door to conversations about stepping out of stereotypes. Her family is real, grounded, and dysfunctional — a conflict of description, yet they are universal in their problems and secrets and how they deal with them.
Author K.P. Smith writes straight from the heart. She has a gift for opening the window into the human experience of adolescence. There is a subdued honesty to her words; courage in her storytelling. I enjoyed following Kendra through her dilemmas that dealt with family, finances and friendship. I appreciated the cultural exposure to early 1980’s urban life in New Orleans through the eyes of a young, black girl.
Kendra’s Diaries is appropriate for all ages, and I happily recommend it.
Danielle Thorne

About the author: K.P. Smith has a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Xavier University in New Orleans, LA. She also has a Masters in Business Administration with a Concentration in Marketing from Loyola University in Chicago, IL. K.P. Smith has a successful career in the Insurance Industry.
She has been an avid reader since her youth. Writing has always been a passion of hers. She is the author of the Growing Pains Series. The first book in the series is Growing Pains: Kendra’s Dairies She is currently working on the second book in the series; New Beginnings.

Blood Born Blog Tour and Giveaway

04 Apr, 2012 by in pendrell, ya paranormal 24 comments

Fire and Ice is so exicted to be today’s stop on the official blog tour for Blood Born hosted by Once Upon A Twilight
Blood Born
Blood Prophecy #1
by Jamie Manning
Hardcover, 360 pages
Expected publication: April 24th 2012
by Pendrell Publishing
ISBN 0983558000
Book Source: Publisher
4 stars
Summary From Goodreads: Waking up in a coffin hungry for blood is only the beginning for sixteen-year-old Ava Blue.
When Chance Caldon, the hottie who dug her up, tells her that she’s half vampire, Ava’s world really turns upside down.
Half vamp? Ava can’t believe it…she doesn’t even know what that means! Not until Aldric, a thousand-year-old vampire, shows up and tells her it’s true–and that he’s the one who turned her. Then Ava truly begins to believe what she is. Now, she has to deal with a sudden and powerful bloodlust, the desire to see Aldric dead, and her growing crush for Chance. Ava knows she’s a monster now, she can feel it; and her life is over.
So Ava sets out to get her life back. But killing vampires begins a battle that could destroy everything she is working toward. In the end, Ava’s decisions will forever change her life and the lives of those she loves. But redemption isn’t lost. Aldric is giving her a chance to regain her humanity. The price? Kill a hundred vampires, or remain a bloodsucker forever.

Heather’s Review: The first thing that gripped me about Blood Born is the quality of writing and the fascinating relationship between Ava Blue and her life saver Chance. The two have a chemistry that will keep you engaged and engrossed. I read the entire book in a day and a half! Well done for a paranormal debut Jamie.

Avaline finds herself buried alive with no recollection of who she is, where she lived or who her family is. She has been reborn to the life of a hybrid vampire. The one person who is there with her from the first moment of rebirth is determined to stay by her side and protect her at all costs. Chance is a keeper, you will love him. The two are on a mission to keep Ava as human as possible and the only way to that is not pleasant. Ava has a lot to overcome and the odds are stacked against her 100 to 1. Add in her new goth friend, a set of twins and two very evil undead and you have quite the action packed thriller of a ride.

I’m not going to lie, this book has some moments of vampire slaying and blood. So if you are queasy with the idea of scenes akin to the Lost Boys (movie of the 80’s) complete with wooden stakes and a clan of killers you might want to gear up for violence. Other than that there is mild swearing and one swoon worthy kiss and there is one heck of an ending that will leave you wanting book two.

Heather

Author Bio: I’ve always wanted to be a writer (like most writers, I’m sure) but not until the last few years have I taken it seriously (after I read a tiny, unknown book called Twilight). I was always told growing up that I had to get a job and “earn my keep”, so I pushed my dream of writing a book to the back of my mind and entered the workforce. Fast-forward many, many years and here I am, trying to make a go at it.

I stumbled across Blogger in 2010 and my world of writing exploded. I have met (via the web) so many amazing writers and industry professionals and book bloggers that have passed on their wisdom and experience and successes and failures. So many, in fact, that I have no excuse to sit down and write out the stories living in my head. Which is what I’m now attempting to do.

I enjoy reading more than most other things (well, except maybe for writing. And TV. No way am I giving up my TV) . I attempt to write YA (paranormal and dystopian) and I love it.

Blood Born, the first book in The Blood Prophecy Trilogy, will be released by Pendrell Publishing April 24, 2012.

Anyone who has stuck around Fire and Ice since the beginning knows that I am a huge Myra McEntire fan. I first met her on twitter. Ebook Review- Hollowland by Amanda Hocking

03 Apr, 2012 by in YA apocalyptic 2 comments

Hollowland
The Hollows #1
by Amanda Hocking
E-book; 308 pages
Publication Date: October 5, 2010
Publisher: Createspace
ASIN: B00466H8JK
Book Source: Amazon
3 stars
Summary From Amazon: “This is the way the world ends – not with a bang or a whimper, but with zombies breaking down the back door.”
Nineteen-year-old Remy King is on a mission to get across the wasteland left of America, and nothing will stand in her way – not violent marauders, a spoiled rock star, or an army of flesh-eating zombies.
Danielle’s Review: Bestselling author, Amanda Hocking, took the self-publishing world by storm when she began pulling in millions of dollars from her paranormal young adult ebooks. Her success made ebooks an even more respectable business and a lucrative one. I was excited to have the opportunity to read HOLLOWLAND, the first in an apocalyptic series.
Remy King bursts forth out of a zombie compromised quarantine unit in the very first pages. With a few friends in tow, she must make her way across the zombie wasteland of what’s left of the United States in order to find her brother who’s been carted off by the government for study. Her adventures through ghost towns and cult compounds are dark, graphic and gory. Besides the interesting addition of a Vegas show lion to aid her in zombie killing, the majority of the action is the repetitive and descriptive slaughter of decomposing, flesh eating monsters.
Remy is amazingly deft at annihilating the walking dead, and her heart is rock hard. She is a strong, centered character, but at times I felt sad at the celebration of her heroic status. Not only was her stamina amazing, but the young girl could walk away from dying friends, kill vigilantes without blinking and push away any feelings of true love. Her only human quality seems to be her devotion for her brother who is immune to the contagious zombie virus.
There is no question that Ms. Hocking is a talented, unique storyteller. The action never stops, but at the same time, neither does the blood and gut letting. At times I actually felt nauseous, but the story, much like a train wreck, has an irresistible draw that lured me back to reading even after I had to put it down.
Being the first in the series and with an open, unresolved ending, most readers will be anxious to pick up the next zombie fest in the series. Although it was a crazy ride, I’m going to have to pass. I enjoyed the quirky talent of this runaway bestselling author, but HOLLOWLAND felt a little sold out for my taste; going for shock value over what could have been true literary genius. I do look forward to picking up another one of Ms. Hocking’s books, but I’ll have to pass on the zombie brains.
Content: This novel contains graphic violence, strong profanity and young adult sexuality. Not recommended for young readers. (Not recommend for old readers with weak stomachs.)

About the Author: Amanda Hocking is a lifelong Minnesotan obsessed with John Hughes and Jim Henson. In between making collages and drinking too much Red Bull, she writes young adult urban fantasy and paranormal romance.

About the Authors: I had the pleasure of meeting both Danyelle and Lynn at the LDS Story makers conference one year ago. They each took time out on more than one occasion to help me through some of my own questions about individualized education plans and resources in my state. Danyelle Ferguson is a wife, mom, book editor, reviewer, and writer. She keeps busy raising four angels-in-training, the oldest of which has Autism. She and her husband, John, co-founded a non-profit organization, Friends of GIANT Steps, which raises money to supplement an Autism preschool. Danyelle has been active in the Autism community for over ten years, during which time she learned that prayer and a sense of humor are the keys to not only enduring but enjoying the special needs journey.

Danyelle Ferguson discovered her love for the written word in elementary school. Her first article was published when she was in 6th grade. During high school, she placed runner up in the Pennsylvania School of Excellence for Arts program, specializing in creative writing. Since then, she’s won several awards for her poetry, short stories, articles, and other writings. Her work has been published in anthologies, newspapers, school journals, and online. Her book, (dis)Abilities and the Gospel, was released in May 2011 through Cedar Fort Publishing.

Danyelle grew up surrounded by the beautiful Allegheny Mountains in Pennsylvania. Then she lived for ten years among the majestic Wasatch Mountains. She is currently experiencing mountain-withdrawal while living in Kansas with her husband and family. She enjoys reading, writing, dancing and singing in the kitchen, and the occasional long bubble bath to relax from the everyday stress of being “Mommy.”

Ebook, 247 pages
Expected Publication Date: April 10th, 2012

Book summary from Goodreads: Fifteen-year-old Isabelle Scott loves her life by the boardwalk on the supposed wrong side of the tracks in North Carolina. But when tragedy strikes, a social worker sends her to live with a long-lost uncle and his preppy privileged family. Isabelle is taken away from everything she’s ever known, and, unfortunately, inserting her into the glamorous lifestyle of Emerald Cove doesn’t go so well. Her cousin Mirabelle Monroe isn’t thrilled to share her life with an outsider, and, in addition to dealing with all the rumors and backstabbing that lurk beneath their classmates’ Southern charm, a secret is unfolding that will change both girls’ lives forever
Crystal’s Review: Isabelle has lived on the wrong side of the tracks her whole life. Not knowing her father and her mother having died in a car accident she has spent the majority of her live being raised by her grandmother in Harborside, North Carolina. While many people believe Harborside to be a dirty, dangerous place Isabelle loves it. She spends as much time as possible in the water where she feels the most comfortable. She is a swimmer, just like her mother was, and even spends her free time giving free swim lessons at the local community center. As much as she loves this place things at home are complicated. Her grandmothers health has been declining quickly and the days when her grandmother cant seem to remember her are happening more regularly. Then one day everything changes, Isabelle’s case worker Barbra shows up and tells her that her grandmother will be going to live in an old folks home and she will be going to live with her uncle, a senator, and his family in Emerald Cove. Isabelle struggles to fit in with her new family, especially her cousin Mirabelle who seems sunny on the outside but soon makes it obvious that Isabelle is just a pain in her side, and the snobby rich kids who attend her new private school are even worse. Eventually she begins to find her way but just as she feels like she may finally be getting the hand of this new life a secret is revealed that may be too much for her to handle. Belles is the touching story of the differences that can tear a family apart and what it takes to bring a family back together. This book also gets bonus points for being set in my home state of North Carolina! I would definitely be suggest this book to anyone looking for a good read.
