Utah Book Month Author Interview with Kathryn Jones

06 Aug, 2012 by in Uncategorized 3 comments

For our first Utah Book Month interview Fire and Ice met with writer Kathryn Jones, author of Conquering your Goliaths. She is currently working on Scrambled, a cozy mystery about a woman named Susan who is not happy in her marriage and thinks the grass is greener on the other side. Susan starts working as a house keeper at an old hotel and as a maid comes upon a man who has been killed. In order to prove her innocence, Susan must find the true killer. Scrambled is the first in a series, with the second book being called Sunnyside Up. Susan, the detective is an inexperienced person so she bungles and makes mistakes. It’s a fun mystery. Scrambled  has been in the works for quite a few years. Kathryn started it 2004 in a college English class and in September 2012 is finally releasing it.

Mrs. Jones graduated in 2009 in mass communications with a minor in creative writing. She then started mentoring other writers who come to her home. Kathryn recently also started a new business others publish their writing into a finished book. Idea Creations Press is a publishing services company utilizing print on demand, or P.O.D technology. The writer owns the rights to their own work, which means that the writer gets to decide how they want to market and sell their books and they make their own profit. Once the book is in the authors hands, Kathryn and the company does not take a percentage of sales. Idea Creations Press offers writing services such as ghostwriting, blog writing, classes and workshops. They also offer editing layout and design and marketing.
Kathryn claims her inspiration for writing came in first grade when she wrote a book called “A Little Saint Dog.” After that, she always kept a journal or diary and then took a writing class in high school. When she got married and pregnant with her first daughter she was sick all the time and asked herself “what can I do in my spare time?” She sat down one day and decided to write a story. It took eight years of daily writing before she got published.
Her first piece was published in the Ensign random sampler section and she still remembers getting the $40 check in the mail. Over the years Kathryn has written for the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News as a freelancer and has also dabbled in journalism.
Kathryn’s first book published in 2002, A River of Stones is a good read for kids whose parents are going through divorce. It is a middle grade reader which was released through a local publishing company.
The next book, Conquering Your Goliaths: a parable of five stones was published in January and in February 2012 the next book-  a guidebook that goes along the first was published. Kathryn teaches five stones in the books. The first of these stones is listening: listen to God and be open to hearing his words. The second stone is to trust in God and trust your own abilities. The third stone is optimism- if you listen and trust in God you will be a positive person. The fourth stone is tenacity… not giving up keep going forward. And, the final stone is constancy- be constant with God no matter what may be thrown in your way. The guidebook asks reflective questions and is a workbook for people who are reading the book Conquering Your Goliaths.
Kathryn mentioned several things that have been the most rewarding experiences as a published author, “the first being reviewers to have been touched by her writing.” She said if you write a book and it changes somebody, makes them want to be a better person and you feel you’re an inspiration to others that is a rewarding experience. The second most rewarding thing about being a published author has been sharing with other writers, being with others “who are quirky like you are.” She admits that sometimes when she is writing she forgets to eat or she will stop her car and pull over to write down an idea.
Kathryn’s  favorite writers include CS Lewis, Max Lucado and Louis Lowry. She used to watch Matlock and Murder She Wrote when she was younger. Both shows made her want to write a mystery.
When asked about advice for those who want to become an author Kathryn said “for most of us it takes a few years and it’s easy to get discouraged. It takes time to get your writing to a certain level. Never give up. It takes a while to find your voice. I came to a  point when I needed to sound like me who I am. I needed to have my own voice. Even after getting published, it doesn’t mean you’ll be published easily after you’ve written your first book.”

She feels things are getting easier for authors these days Amazon’s create space program. Kathryn’s company also has a sale going right now where book can be published from manuscript, once it is edited and ready to go to a bound book.

In the past, Kathryn was a member of the League of Utah writers. She now critiques manuscripts and meets with a group of other authors as they talk about dialogue setting and voice. She teaches a class on marketing your book which is offered for free. She uses ocean waves music to clear her mind and to get mellowed for writing. She also has a book with nothing but magazine pictures in it for inspiration. She asks yourself “what am I going to read about today?” then uses the five senses to write about the picture. Her biggest suggestion to aspiring writers is to “write every day.”
One resource Kathryn also recommends for writers is the book Writing Screenplays That Sell. It teaches you about dialogue characterization and development, since authors usually do better at either dialogue or setting- one or the other and not both.
Some fun lesser-known or unique facts about Kathryn… many of her ideas for a cozy mystery came from her days cleaning houses. Kathryn loves reading Hugh Nibley. She really likes the book Approaching Zion. She said ” it’s fantastic. It’s really deep. It expands my mind and gets me thinking outside the box.” She also loves all things Egyptian. Kathryn studies the facsimiles in The Book of Mormon and the Pearl of Great Price. She loves to learn and is trying to learn how to read Egyptian.

It was a pleasure to meet with Kathryn!

Author Bio: My favorite tool is the pen. Though computer keys get the words down quicker and easier, I like to put pen to paper, smell the ink, see the words as they are developed and renewed by new phrases or thoughts. I enjoy traveling to wherever the character takes me. This often means even I am surprised and warmed at the outcome. In the end, when my writing is done, I like to watch the eyes of the reader whenever I can. Their reflective expression gives me the greatest glimpse into what my writing has become. When I am not writing I’m reading. I am an avid reader of the scriptures and books of spiritual merit. I have been married 30 years and enjoy teaching and working with youth and children-including my own three girls, three grand-daughters and grandson.
Her works: “A River of Stones,” middle-reader about divorce and step-families, (LDS) published in 2002. “Conquering Your Goliaths: A Parable of the Five Stones,” (Christian Fiction) published in 2012.“Conquering Your Goliaths: Guidebook,” (non-fiction guidebook) published in 2012. And… “Scrambled,” a Susan Sleuth Cozy mystery (the first in a series) set on the east coast.

YA ARC Review- Crewel

Crewel

Paperback, 357 pages
Expected Publication Date: October 16th 2012
by Farrar, Straus and Giroux
ISBN 0374316414

5 Stars
Summary from Goodreads: Incapable. Awkward. Artless.

That’s what the other girls whisper behind her back. But sixteen year-old Adelice Lewys has a secret: she wants to fail.

Gifted with the ability to weave time with matter, she’s exactly what the Guild is looking for, and in the world of Arras, being chosen as a Spinster is everything a girl could want. It means privilege, eternal beauty, and being something other than a secretary. It also means the power to embroider the very fabric of life. But if controlling what people eat, where they live and how many children they have is the price of having it all, Adelice isn’t interested.

Not that her feelings matter, because she slipped and wove a moment at testing, and they’re coming for her—tonight.

Now she has one hour to eat her mom’s overcooked pot roast. One hour to listen to her sister’s academy gossip and laugh at her Dad’s stupid jokes. One hour to pretend everything’s okay. And one hour to escape.

Because once you become a Spinster, there’s no turning back.

Crystal’s Review: This book absolutely blew me away! The cover drew me in as it was unlike any cover I had ever seen. I loved the mix of colors and the ethereal feel they gave the cover. The story behind the cover is just as great. It is not often that I come across a book that I feel has a storyline that is fresh and new and not just another version of a storyline done a thousand times. This book gave me exactly that.
The premise of the book is intricate and interesting. The characters were written very well, I found myself instantly connected with the main character Adelice. I am a sucker for a strong female lead in a book and she is the definition of strong. The accompanying characters are equally as interesting. Jost and Erik both have their faults but they also both have compassionate sides that leave me wanting to know more. The world building was wonderful as the author was descriptive and I had no trouble imagining what I felt the world of the story would look like. I am really excited about this book and I will be eagerly awaiting the next one.
Content: Drinking, some scenes of violence, sexual tension.
Crystal

Author Bio:  I like coffee. A lot. Writing gives me time to go get a cup without my kids. I like books as much as I like coffee, but it is easier to read with children hanging on you than drink coffee due to the threat of third degree burns. That’s why coffee gets top billing in my intro: its unattainability.

I hold a Masters in English with a specialization in 18th century women’s studies. While this is a highly marketable area of expertise, I stay home with my kids, which means my 3 year-old son uses correct grammar and doesn’t burn down the house.

I have a ridiculously supportive husband who dreams of being included on a book jacket: “The author lives in Kansas with her husband, two children, and a Tuesday cat.”

I’m represented by Mollie Glick of Foundry Literary + Media.

Choosing Charity Blog Tour and Giveaway

01 Aug, 2012 by in terri ferran 12 comments

Fire and Ice is excited to be today’s stop on the Choosing Charity Blog Tour. We have a guest post from the author and giveaway for those who read and comment!

Description of Book:
When Kit learns that her biological mother wants to meet her, it seems her perfect life is about to come tumbling down. With a new job, a husband she adores, and friends all around her, can Kit possibly be expected to risk everything for a woman who left her in a dumpster to die?

Of course, love comes in many forms. Now Kit’s about to learn that when faith and hope aren’t enough, charity can make things right.
Author Terri Ferran is here to give us a little bit of advice about the writing process in her exclusive author post…
“No thinking – that comes later. You must write your first draft with your heart. You rewrite with your head. The first key to writing is… to write, not to think!”(Finding Forrester, Dir. Gus Van Sant. Perf. Sean Connery. DVD. Columbia Pictures, 2000]

Finding Forrester is one of my favorite movies. It re-ignites my love for writing and reminds me of something critical: I can let my fears define me or my dreams inspire me.
But no matter how inspired I am—a cold, hard fact remains: In order to be a writer, I must write. My fingers must punch the keys; the ink must flow; my thoughts must be recorded.
I know this. I want this. Yet I still procrastinate.
Does this sound familiar? Today I want to share a few ways I deal with this problem:

– Open a document and jot down ideas as they come. It helps me empty my brain of the clutter that keeps popping up, and I record ideas before they die of loneliness. I carry a notebook with me for those times I can’t access a computer (and can sometimes even find a pen).

– Read (and edit) what I wrote the day before. This doesn’t work for everyone; some people work better when they completely separate editing and composing. For me, editing my prior day’s work gets me back in the flow of the story.

– When I finish writing for the day/session, I try to write down a sentence or two of the scene or chapter I want to write next. Getting started is usually the hardest part of writing for me, so leaving a next-day prompt is almost as good as an icy-cold Diet Coke.

– Find a routine that works. It might be early in the morning or late at night or bits here and there throughout the day. My routine changes based on the season and work/family demands. There is no one-size-fits-all, but a routine is crucial.

– Imagine I am the character I’m writing. I put myself in the scene and visualize what I would feel, think, and say.

– Set goals and focus solely on writing during that time. It may be 30 minutes, or 1,000 words. I ignore the phone, emails, and that jagged tooth where my crown broke off until I reach my goal.

– I try to think of myself more as a writer. When people ask me what I do for a living I usually say, “I’m a CPA.” I have years of training and experience as a bean counter. I once heard it takes 10,000 hours of practice to master something. Based on that, I’m a quadruple-master at accounting! In the case of writing, the 10,000 hours translates to a million words (roughly ten novels). I’ve only half-mastered the writing craft—no wonder I feel like a half-writ!

Advice I would give to other writers: Take a line from Finding Forrester and remember to write with your heart. That’s scary, because the heart is fragile. But the head is much tougher and perfect for rewrites. That may be why we’ve been given both.

Author Bio:  Terri Ferran grew up in a small Colorado town that offered little in the way of entertainment. She escaped through reading (and later on a Continental Trailways bus), and although the town didn’t have a library, she eagerly anticipated the coming of the Bookmobile and would check out stacks of books at a time.
She moved to Utah as a high school senior where she joined the LDS Church and met her husband, Tod. She dreamed of being a writer but took the safe route of becoming a CPA. She finally got brave enough to quit working in the world of numbers to pursue her dream of writing and also to spend more time with her children. Her first book, Finding Faith was published in 2007 and she is excited to be living her dream of writing in real life.
Terri still loves to read, but she can usually be found writing, doing laundry, dishes, running errands, napping, eating chocolate, or exercising (not necessarily in that order).

Review- The Time-Traveling Fashionista at the Palace of Marie Antoinette

5 stars
Book Summary from Amazon: What if a beautiful dress could take you back in time?
Louise Lambert’s best friend’s thirteenth birthday party is fast approaching, so of course the most important question on her mind is, “What am I going to wear?!” Slipping on an exquisite robin’s egg blue gown during another visit to the mysterious Traveling Fashionista Vintage Sale, Louise finds herself back in time once again, swept up in the glory of palace life, fancy parties, and enormous hair as a member of the court of France’s most infamous queen, Marie Antoinette. But between cute commoner boys and glamorous trips to Paris, life in the palace isn’t all cake and couture. Can Louise keep her cool-and her head!-as she races against the clock to get home?
Heather’s Review: Louise Lambert is another year older after her first adventure on aboard the Titanic. 13 brings with it the not so fun surprise that her father is out of work and funds are low at their home. She may have to miss her class trip to France which she and best friend Brooke have been looking forward to all summer long. To add injury to the insult, the boy she’s been after, Todd,  is seeking the attention of the cute new student from California and Tiff will be going with Todd while Louise stays home.

What better to cheer her up than another invitation to an exclusive traveling fashionista vintage sale? The address on the invitation leads Louise to a cobble stoned side street she’s never noticed before. Marla and Glenda, the witchy old shop owners are sure to have some new pieces for her to try on. Fashion is Louise’s passion- so when she sees the egg blue french ball gown tucked away she’s bound and determined to slip it on… even if it’s not what the shop owners had picked out for her. Putting int he magical gown Louise is instantly transported to another time and place. Can she survive the politics of Marie Antoinette’s court? And can she make it out in time before she loses her own head?

I enjoyed the second installment of The Time- Traveling Fashionista more than the first. I think author Bianca Turetsky has polished her writing and made the adventure realistic and suspenseful.  I can’t wait to see the full color hard back version as the ARC is missing full color illustrations and a history guide in back that will be in the final copy. Bianca brings history alive for young people in a way that makes them want to learn more. The world building was fantastic as well as the pace. There was little drag to the story; it kept me engaged the entire time. I love Louise’s obsession with all things vintage, including Polaroid cameras. I’m excited for book three an the new character, Peter. The tiny little dash of romance made things fun. This is a series I will be passing on to my children. I would recommend it for ages 9 and older as there is reference to beheading and discussion of violence from the revolution. Overall, a fast, entertaining historical fiction pick for middle grade to younger young adults.

About the Author: Bianca Turetsky graduated from Tufts University in 2001 with a BA in English literature. She moved to New York City to intern in the editorial departments of Rolling Stone and PAPER magazines. Bianca then went to work for the artist/filmmaker Julian Schnabel where she has been running his studio for the past ten years and was an assistant on the Academy Award nominated film, “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly”, as well as a feature concert documentary, “Lou Reed’s Berlin”, and his recently released feature, “Miral.” She lives in a cozy apartment in Brooklyn, New York, that houses her very extensive and much loved vintage collection. The Time-Traveling Fashionista at The Palace of Marie Antoinette will be released by Poppy September 2012. She is currently at work on the third book in the series. She is represented by Elisabeth Weed at Weed Literary and Howie Sanders at UTA.

Free Ebook Review- Speed Dating With the Dead

Rating: 4 stars
From Amazon.com: When Digger Wilson brings his paranormal team Spirit Seekers International to the White Horse Inn, he is skeptical that his dead wife will keep her half of the bargain. He doesn’t believe in ghosts, and just before she died, she promised to meet him there. But when one of the conference guests channels a mysterious presence and an Ouija board spells out a pet phrase known only to Digger and his wife, his convictions are challenged. And when guests start to disappear, Digger and his daughter Kendra must face the circle of demons that view the hotel as their personal playground. Because soon the inn will be closing for good, angels can’t be trusted, and demons don’t like to play alone…
Danielle’s Review: I picked up this book off Amazon for Kindle simply because it looked like a good little spooky paranormal, and it was free. What I got was a terrifying horror story that I couldn’t read at night.

If I was rating this book on my own values, taste and experience, I’d have to give it a mere 3 stars, but every book deserves an honest, fair shot about its writing and entertainment. Mr. Nicholson does both. Although for me, the cover and title have nothing to do with this ghost hunter’s nightmare, SPEED DATING is a well plotted journey of terror that threw me back to junior high memories and my first experience with Stephen King’s THE SHINING. Hotel haunts are delicious backdrops, and Nicholson takes every advantage of lonely hallways, dark basements, and a quirky, bizarre cast of characters that leaves you almost happy to see them destroyed.

Kendra Wilson and her father are hosting a paranormal conference at the spooky White Horse Inn in the Carolinas, but unbeknown to Kendra, her recovering alcoholic father has come to reunite with his wife’s spirit at their former honeymoon locale. What nobody knows, is that evil has been brewing beneath the floorboards of the White Horse for years and the conference offers the perfect recipe of souls to bring everything to a paranormal explosion.

At times the cast numbers become almost overwhelming with all of the point of view switching, but again, the tension and heart palpitating suspense keeps the pages turning as Kendra Wilson struggles to come to peace with her broken relationship between her widowed father and herself. Slowly realizing she is surrounded by a murderous evil, she carries the story’s pacing on her shoulders, but her gritty courage and self-respect carry off the novel.

There are genius moments when the writing stops the reader. They have nothing to do with the formula or the genre; and more than once I asked myself why the author chose to delve into the shallows of cookie cutter genre writing when his gift is apparent between the lines.

There is something as gritty as Kendra in his words; something deeper and more thoughtful beneath the in-your-face screams of demons and ghosts. I would venture to predict that more thought provoking, literary prose lies hidden somewhere in his own basement, and when he finds the courage to set it free he will write stories that will stand taller and touch more lives than scary ghost stories we share around the campfires.

Content Warning: Crude, vulgar language and mild sexuality. Not recommended for YA readers.

Nine of us came here. We look like you. We talk like you. We live among you. Bue we are not you. We can do things you dream of doing. We have powers you dream of having. We are stronger and faster than anything you have ever seen. We are the superheroes you worship in movies and comic books – but we are real.
Our plan was to grow, and train, and become strong, and become one, and fight them. But they found us and started hunting us first. Now all of us are running. Spending our lives in shadows, in places where no one would look, blending in. We have lived among you without you knowing.But they know.They caught Number One in Malaysia. Number Two in England. And Number Three in Kenya. They killed them all.
I am Number Four.
I am next.

Alacia’s Review:  Number Four is next to be hunted by the Mogadoriens, so he and his protector, Henri leave their home and head for Paradise, Ohio under the alias of Henri and John Smith. John (Number Four) knows he must lay low at school but meets Sarah, who just happens to be the ex-girlfriend to the quarterback: Mark. Mark sees John talking to Sarah and it is apparent that John cannot lay low as Mark continues to harass him each day at school. As things continue, John begins to develop his Legacies, or powers that people from his planet have. Again remaining under the radar is hard as these Legacies include being able to emit light from his hands, super speed, and super strength. John plays these off to his peers as pranks he wanted to pull in class, but one kid named Sam knows there is something different about John and begins to interact with him. As John gets to know Sam more, he learns that he has been obsessed with aliens ever since his dad disappeared mysteriously. Throughout the school year, John continues to get to know Sam and Sarah, the first real friends he has ever had, Henri warns him not to get too attached as they may need to flee at any given second, should the Mogadoriens find their location. With the help of Henri, Sam, Sarah, and a surprise Legacy, John develops the skills he needs to defeat the Mogadoriens and the hope of rebuilding his home planet.
I loved this book! I carried it with me everywhere I went, and read any chance I could. The dynamic between John and Henri is sweet, as Henri is the only father figure John has since leaving their home planet. It is also fun to see how the relationships with Sam and Sarah develop, and I found myself wishing they were actual people so that I might be able to engage with them. The book was an easy ready, with only a few strange alien words, but nothing terribly hard to pronounce, and it flowing well from one page to the next. I am excited to continue the series and see what comes of Number Four and his friends.
Content: Relatively clean, just a few swear words and one mild kissing scene.

Summary from goodreads: Alex and Conner Bailey’s world is about to change, in this fast-paced adventure that uniquely combines our modern day world with the enchanting realm of classic fairytales.

The Land of Stories tells the tale of twins Alex and Conner. Through the mysterious powers of a cherished book of stories, they leave their world behind and find themselves in a foreign land full of wonder and magic where they come face-to-face with the fairy tale characters they grew up reading about.

But after a series of encounters with witches, wolves, goblins, and trolls alike, getting back home is going to be harder than they thought.

Cathy’s Review: Alex and Conner Bailey are 11 year-old twins. They have been in the same class in school since kindergarten. Alex is the smart one who always knows all the answers and Conner is the joker who sits in the back of the class and doesn’t really understand the class work. Their class, under the direction of their teacher Mrs. Peters, has been learning about fairy tales. Neither Alex or Conner really need to learn anything new about  fairy tales, because when they were young they would go to their grandmother’s cottage with their parents and their dad and grandmother would read them fairy tales late into the night. Unfortunately, their dad died on their 11th birthday, nearly a year ago. The twins know not to expect too much for their 12th birthday, things are tight for their working single mother, but they are surprised by a visit from their grandmother. She gives them their gifts and then as a special surprise she gives them the book of fairy tales that she had read to them when they were small. Alex is thrilled with the gift and quickly takes it to her room when she goes to bed, but realizes quickly that the book won’t let her sleep, it insists on humming and glowing off and on all night and the next several nights. Conner’s not sure what’s up with Alex, she’s acting strange, he finds out about the book a few days later at school. When the book interrupts their class, Alex knows that she needs to find out why it glows and hums. She goes home, opens it and sticks her hand inside and ends up toppling head first into the book. Conner follows and they realize that they are in a beautiful fairy tale world, a place that they both had only dreamed about before. The fairy tale world is a dangerous place though, filled with witches, wolves, goblins and trolls. They know that they need to return home to their mom, but just how are they going to manage that?

I was sucked into this story from the prologue, the story itself is engaging, full of action and adventure and just plain fun. Who doesn’t want to meet such characters as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Red Riding Hood and Rapunzel? I really enjoyed Alex and Conner, I felt sad for them for having lost their dad at such a young age and then worried for them as they navigated the dangerous Land of Stories. This was a fun book!
Content: One mild swear word that I noticed.
