Christmas from Deseret Book & Zions Mercantile {Blogger Event Swag Unveil}

16 Oct, 2013 by in zions merc, zions mercantile 1 comment

Yesterday I attended the Exclusive Blogger Event at Deseret Book as an introduction to Historic Zion’s Mercantile Company. Bloggers had a chance to enter the flagship store before doors opened where we browsed the Zions Merc shelves and were shown the Christmas line coming out in 2013.

First of all, may I say I was slightly dazed by the beautiful displays in the downtown store? If you haven’t had a chance to head down there, it’s across the street from Temple Square and well worth the visit.

We then walked over to Deseret Book Corporate Office where we were given swag bags and boxes.

(Here’s the view from the DB offices, snapped with my iphone…)

Want to see what was inside our beautifully wrapped packages?

There’s a sneak peek on our Facebook page and YouTube
I’ll be telling you more about how they were received in our home closer to Christmas, but for now you can learn more about each new Zion’s Mercantile Co. item at DeseretBook.com.

Honey Butter Tableware
Advent Calendar
Flicker Candle
Biblical Names of Christ Ornaments
 Christmas at Historic Nauvoo Ornament
 Music Box Grinders
Mason Jar Drink Dispenser and Mugs

Linen Stripe Christmas Items & Heritage Wrap and Ribbons are not listed yet online, as they will be available online around the first week of December.

Thanks again to the wonderful staff at Deseret Book for giving us Christmas in October!

4 stars

There are more things to make from Sunday meeting programs than airplanes and fortune tellers; now your kids can fold CTR shields, pioneer handcarts, or the Salt Lake Temple!

Mormon Origami provides 25 simple to intermediate origami designs from the Book of Mormon and Church history. These designs can be used by teachers and parents as lesson handouts or activities to help children be reverent. This unique skill will entertain and help illustrate principles as you include these gospel-oriented designs in your lessons, activities, and everyday fun!

Breview: My son has been a big fan of origami, paper art, since reading the Darth Paper series, so when we saw this book I immediately handed it over to him and he loved it. In his own words “it’s awesome!” He easily followed the easy step by step instructions to fold a temple. Mormon Origami is great fun. My only wish was that it had some color illustrations or link to a step by step video online, to go with it. But overall, he truly enjoyed using this instructional book!

Slayers: Friends and Traitors Blog Tour Kick Off and Author Guest Post

15 Oct, 2013 by in Author Guest Post, Slayers: Friends and Traitors Leave a comment

Happy Book Birthday!
Fire and Ice is thrilled to announce, host and kick off the official blog tour for
Slayers: Friends and Traitors by C. J. Hill

Hardcover, 400 pages
Expected publication: October 15th 2013
by Feiwel & Friends
ISBN 1250024617

The Slayers – teens who have powers to fight dragons—are back by popular demand in this high-octane sequel, now with a new cover package!

Tori is at a White House dinner party when she hears a horrifying sound: dragon eggs hatching. It means in less than a year, the dragons will be mature and dangerous. The Slayers are well-trained, but their group is not yet complete, and Tori is determined to track down Ryker Davis, the mysterious Slayer who has yet to surface.

What Tori doesn’t bargain for, however, is the surprising truth about her powers: she isn’t a Slayer after all, but a Dragon Lord, with a built-in predisposition to protect dragons, not kill them.

How will she overcome this to save the lives of her friends?

Today we have author C. J . Hill on the site to talk about…

The accidental love triangle
I didn’t mean to have a love triangle in Slayers. It’s not that I don’t like love triangles—as I reader, I think they can be great. If I’m living vicariously through the heroine, why shouldn’t two hot, awesome guys be fighting over me?
As a writer though, I hate them. I get involved with my characters and I care about them too much. When you create a love triangle, you’re going to break someone’s heart in the end. I hate that. I don’t want to devastate either Dirk or Jesse. They’re both great guys in their own way.

This is how the love triangle happened:  I said Dirk looked like Dirk Benedict. Those of you who are old enough to have watched Dirk Benedict in either of his hit shows (Battlestar Galactica and The A-team) know that the man had irresistible charisma, charm, and good looks. Which is why you should never put him in a book as the hero’s friend. He will hit on the heroine, and she won’t be able to resist him. (Can you blame her, really? No, no you can’t.)
When I started the scene in Slayers where Dirk and Tori discover they’re counterparts, I hadn’t planned on having them kiss—but yeah, Dirk will be Dirk. It changed the whole dynamic of the series.
This might not have been such a bad thing, except when my teenage daughter read the book, she insisted that Tori should end up with Dirk instead of Jesse.  As I wrote Slayers: Friends and Traitors I realized my daughter might have a point. To tell you the truth, at this point, I don’t know who she’ll end up with. I guess we’ll all have to read book three when it comes out to see.

Author Bio: Janette Rallison (AKA C.J. Hill) writes books because writing is much more fun than cleaning

bathrooms.  Her avoidance of housework has led her to writing 20 novels that have sold over 1,000,000 copies. Most of her books are romantic comedies or action because hey, there is enough angst in real life, but there’s a drastic shortage of humor, romance, and hot guys who fight dragons.  Her latest series is Slayers. Booklist called it, “More than a worthy equal of the works of Rick Riordan or Christopher Paolini.”
Janette lives in Chandler, Arizona with her husband, five kids, and enough cats to classify her as eccentric.

Pure Book Magic- River of Time Series by Lisa T Bergren

14 Oct, 2013 by in River of Time Series 5 comments

I spent my entire week absolutely eating up the entire River of Time series by Lisa T Bergren. If you have a hankering for time travel, historic fiction set in medieval Italy, lots of action and amazing characters, this is the series for you. By Saturday, after I’d read the last pages of books 3.2-3.2 Bourne and Tributary, I didn’t want to pick up any other books. The whole package, taken in one big swoop was just plain magic.

What I loved:

  • Hearing about mid evil times, the use of herbs for healing
  • The Magical setting…Tuscany sunrises, rolling hills, fountains and plazas.
  • The feeling that if I looked out my window right now, I might actually be there in Italy. Lisa has a way of transporting you back in time and letting the reader become fully immersed.
  • The character development that Gabi went through. I was mildly annoyed by her modernized “teen voice” in book one, but she grew on me.
  • Greco! Oh my heavens. Can we talk about a complex, multi layered, twisted man. Wow.
  • The photos of Italy Lisa includes in the ebook version of Bourne and Tributary. It’s amazing to see the actual locations written into the books.
  • Hearing Gabi’s point of view and Luca’s voice in the novellas.
  • The sassy, strong and independent nature of the She Wolves, sisters who aren’t afraid to fight.
  • Gabi’s discovery of faith and the power of prayer amidst normal teen angst and modern questions.
  • News that there is a book four on the way! DELUGE.

These fan made trailers…

        Watch out for:
        • Non-stop action. There is a lot more war related violence and torture in these last books. Content wise definitely more for older teens (17 and above) and adults.
        • The pull between temptation and love. There are mature sensual scenes and themes as you get the full arc of a relationship from meeting to marriage and motherhood.
        • A big shift in characters from Books 1-3 and the novellas. If you want the chemistry and relationships between Gabis, Marcello and Greco to stay the same as they were at the end of Torment, best not to read Bourne and Tributary. Everything shifts…A Lot.
Absolutely one of the best series I have ever read. If you haven’t read them, take a look 🙂

About the author: Lisa Tawn Bergren is the best-selling, award-winning author of over 40 books, with more than 2.5 million copies sold. Her most recent works includes a YA series called River of Time (Waterfall, Cascade, Torrent, Bourne & Tributary), God Gave Us Easter, a devotional called Upside-Down Prayers for Parents and the Grand Tour Series (Glamorous Illusions, Grave Consequences, and Glittering Promises). She’s currently at work on a new YA series called Remnants, coming out in 2014.

Lisa’s time is split between managing home base, writing, and working on ducks with her husband, Tim (RMrustic.com). Tim’s a worship leader, graphic designer and duck-sculptor. They have three kids–Olivia (18), Emma (15) and Jack (10).

What do you do when your knight in shining armor lives, literally, in a different world? Most American teenagers want a vacation in Italy, but the Betarrini sisters have spent every summer of their lives among the romantic hills with their archaelogist parents. Stuck among the rubble of the medieval castles in rural Tuscany, on yet another hot, dusty archaeological site, Gabi and Lia are bored out of their minds…until Gabi places her hand atop a handprint in an ancient tomb and finds herself in fourteenth-century Italy. And worse yet, in the middle of a fierce battle between knights of two opposing forces. Suddenly Gabi’s summer in Italy is much, much more interesting.

Review: I have had this series on my wish list FOREVER! And so, so glad I finally sat down to start reading it. Now that I’m sucked in  I’m gong to have to read the whole thing–all three +  books. It’s so fun to find a time travel YA that transports you to another dimension for a few hours. Gabi and her sister are on site in Italy with their mother for an archaeological dig of ancient Etruschan tombs. Going inside the dig site is forbidden, but the sisters are curious and bored. Little do they know they are about to be sucked into a time tunnel and spit out in the 14th century.

Tensions are thick and the country is in the uproar of war, border disputes and alliances. Gabi is spit right into the midst of a clash between Castelle Peratore and Castello Forelli– a battle that eventually may cost her her life. With fast paced action, perfect romance and historic elements, I ate this book up. The tension between Gabi and Marcello is beautiful. There are lots of layers to plot and the characters are well developed. I do wish we knew a little bit more about Marcello and am hoping we get a peek of his perspective in the novellas or sequels. There are also moments of finding one’s faith and turning to God.

Lisa Tawn Bergren has a new fan. I’m off to read book two, Cascade.

Content: moderate war related violence, kissing, threat of torture and sexual assault. For older teens.

About the author: Lisa Tawn Bergren is the best-selling, award-winning author of over 40 books, with more than 2.5 million copies sold. Deseret Book Launches a New Resource- MissionHome.Com

08 Oct, 2013 by in mission home, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints Leave a comment

As a 23 year old young woman, I entered the mission home with a call to teach for 18 months and hoping to learn a language still very new to me. I had accepted a mission call, leaving behind family, friends and college classes to teach what I knew in my heart to be true. Then  just two years ago, as a pregnant mother, I returned to Santiago, Chile for the 15th anniversary of my full-time mission with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Several of us Americans boarded planes and returned for the first time to the areas we served and taught in, then gathered with our past companions and families in South America. What a memorable experience! My mission changed me forever, molded me into a better person and taught me how to love. Two things were and still are very important to missionaries– studying and learning what they are to teach and mail from home.  For this reason, I wanted to share with our readers a brand new resource…

” The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints currently operates over 400 missions with more than 75,000 missionaries serving throughout the world. When the missionary age change was announced in the October 2012 general conference, a new wave of prospective missionaries began preparing for the moment they would receive their call.

After receiving the call, missionaries and families often begin their search for specific information on that mission. Until now, there has not been a centralized site to learn about the culture and people of each mission area.  On October 1st, 2013 Deseret Book Company launched an online missionary website, MissionHome.com.

MissionHome.com focuses on each phase of missionary service—prepare, serve and return. It includes helpful hints to prospective missionaries including tips for how to pack efficiently and how to prepare to leave as well as inspiring and authentic experiences from former missionaries.  A complete mission directory, created by missionaries who themselves have served in that area, provides information about local customs, food, transportation, safety, and many other insights.

“We saw a way that we could provide a gathering place for missionaries and the families of missionaries to become acquainted with the area where they would be serving as well as provide other unique resources,” said Laurel Christensen Day of Deseret Book Company, “and MissionHome.com was born.”

MissionHome.com is easy to use and provides a library of information for prospective and returning missionaries as well as help to families of those currently serving (a section for senior couples will be coming soon). Familiar LDS authors as well as recently returned missionaries and past mission presidents will be regular contributors to the site.

In addition to great free content and resources, families will be able to send care packages directly to their missionaries with guaranteed delivery from Deseret Book. Service is available to most missions.

For more information on Mission Home, visit www.missionhome.com. Visit them online at Youtube/ Pinterest/ Facebook

Create a kitchen or whip up a washroom with these no-fail design formulas and transform your house into your dream home, one room at a time.

We have Tonya here on site to answer a few questions in our exclusive interview…

Tell us about the process that led you to decorating and being an author.

I have always, always enjoyed interior design. On my blog, myroomrecipes.com, I talk about my first design project, my bedroom, when I was 8. My parents always let me decorate my bedroom and eventually relied on my direction for decorating the whole house. I had second thoughts about interior design when I was in college because I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to make a living at it. So, I got my undergraduate degree in public relations and got a “safe” 9-5 office job with a steady paycheck, benefits and a 401K. I was miserable! After getting married, I was able to go back to school and get my Master’s degree in Interior Design, and I have never looked back. It’s interesting how life works out because my degree in public relations, which requires a large amount of writing, came to benefit me when I was approached by my publisher, Cedar Fort, to write a book.

Do you draw inspiration from any other cultures or influences?

I draw inspiration from everything! People, places, things. My mind is constantly processing what I see, feel, and hear which eventually becomes part of my design. I grew up in the midwest (Minnesota and Oklahoma), so my style is a little bit different than most in Utah. My friends in Oklahoma are pretty eclectic and incorporate a lot of unique finds into their interiors. That’s why I wanted to include some spaces from my home state.

        Ten must read books
( I LOVE to read, so bare with me… these are in no particular order)

        Design Books:
        1. Design Sponge at Home by Grace Bonney
        2. Domino the Book of Decorating
        3. The Not So Big House by Sarah Susanka (and all books in her collection)
        4. Young House Love by Sherry and John Petersik
        5. Decorate by Becker and Copestick
        6. Life’s Too Short to Fold Fitted Sheets by Lisa Quinn
        7. Better Homes and Gardens New Decorating Book
        8. Good Bones, Great Pieces by Suzanne and Lauren McGrath
        9. Pottery Barn series of books
        10. Handbuilt Home by Ana White

        Books in General:
        1. I Knew Their Hearts by Jeff Olsen (my husband)
        2. The Gift of Change by Marianne Williamson
        3. The Shoemaker’s Wife by Adriana Trigiani
        4. The Light Between Oceans by ML Stedman
        5. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
        6. Heaven is Here: An Incredible Story of Hope, Triumph, and Everyday Joy by Stephanie Nielson
        7. The Kitchen House by Kathleen Grissom
        8. Caleb’s Crossing by Geraldine Brooks
        9. Room by Emma Donoghue
        10. These is My Words by Nancy E. Turner

Have any events, signing or store open houses coming up?

Yes! Next Thursday, Oct. 10 from 6-8 pm, Main Street in Bountiful is hosting an event called Shop Local, Save the Girls. It’s a fundraiser event for breast cancer awareness. Our store, LIV Showroom, will specifically be holding my Room Recipes book launch and signing, a huge floor model sale, and, drumroll please, the Waffle Love truck will be in front of our store from 5-9 pm!

What’s your favorite season and why?

Summer is my favorite season. I love the sun, heat and warmth! It’s a non-fussy time of year to decorate. Life is more laid-back. My home always feels open and clean. Guests casually come and go. Fall and Winter feel so suffocating. It’s cold. There’s pressure to decorate for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. I don’t like dragging temporary decor out and then having to clean it all up and put it away.

So far, what has been the most rewarding part of being an author?

Technically I’ve only been an author for a few weeks since my book has only been available since then! I’ve gotten some really nice comments and feedback via email and other book reviews, so that’s always nice. I’m glad people are able to find inspiration from my book.

What recommendations would you give a first time home decorator?

Use what you have, recycle, DIY and don’t get stressed out about it. Decorating should be fun and your space should reflect your personality. When I was in college, I decorated every apartment I lived in with hand-me-downs and DIY projects. I was creative with my limited budget. Design doesn’t have to be expensive and high-end.

How do you balance writing, working and family life?

Ugh! Good question! I’m still sorting that out. I’m very, very busy. We had the pleasure of hosting two teenage girls from England for three months while I wrote my book. They were able to assist with my boys, my house and even with projects in the book. My boys are a little older, so it’s a bit easier. My husband is super supportive of everything I do. Plus, I wake up at 5 am to get started on my day!

        Favorite recipe?

My husband makes the most awesome chili. He actually named it Jeff’s Famous Chili. Anyone who has ever used it in a chili cook off has won! It’s so good! Let me know if you’re interested 😉
