Author Interview Ronda Gibb Hinrichsen

09 Aug, 2010 by in Missing, ronda gibb hinrichsen, trapped, utah authors 11 comments

What things inspire you as a writer?

I’m assuming you’re talking about what sparks an idea? If so, the answer is anything. Scriptures, passing conversations, dreams, miscellaneous events—just anything.

Where did the idea for Trapped come from?

Actually, TRAPPED is the result of two vivid yet very different dreams I had a couple of years ago. The first involved a child caught in a deadly trap where her father had to sacrifice himself so she could live, and the second portrayed a fantastical scene of sacrifice, complete with character motivations, that ultimately became the basis for my finale.

What research did you do for the book and have you visited any of the locations?

My family and I went to Salzburg, Austria in 2006. We also traveled through the Alps to both Slovenia and Germany during that visit, and I loved it! It’s so gorgeous there. But to further answer your question, I used personal experiences and the settings from that event, but I also did a lot of book and online research.

Who are you mentors/ heroes?

My heroes include anyone who uses their talents to further goodness in this world, but I also look to an English professor from Ricks College, Dorla Jenkins, as the woman who most set me on my path.

Describe your favorite scene to write in Trapped.

That’s a toughie. There are so many scenes I really enjoyed writing, even some that weren’t fast-paced, because they were so important to Emi’s story. However, if I have to choose one, I’ll say the scene where Emi and Daniel reveal their love for each other, even while dangers, not to mention Lucas’s relationship with her, still threaten them.

Any new books in the works?

Yes. I’ve begun a historical, romantic suspense novel, but I’m also thinking strongly about writing a sequel to TRAPPED with new characters. Emi’s story—the Traugott and Tillman story—has really only just begun.

If you could recommend three books to us what would they be?

Besides the Book of Mormon, I’d advise you to read anything that YOU love. Go to the bookstore and find a book you want to read. Not your kids or your spouse or your neighbor. YOU. That way, you will find something that speaks to YOU, and you will be enriched.

What has been the most rewarding experience as an author thus far?

This is a toughie, too, because I feel I’m richly blessed to be doing what I’ve been working toward for so many years. But you know, even with my magazine articles, my greatest reward has always been hearing from readers that my writing has touched their heart or blessed their lives.

Ronda has generously offered us five author signed bookmarks. We have the FIRST ones out there! To Enter to Win: simply comment blow with your email address. Contest ends September 9, 2010 and is open internationally.

Author Interview With Tricia Rayburn

04 Aug, 2010 by in siren, tricia rayburn 3 comments

Today’s Author Interview is with Tricia Rayburn as a part of her blog tour for the book SIREN hosted by Hooked on YA books.

Where did the inspiration from Siren come from? Siren was inspired by my recently developed fear of all creatures of the deep. I grew up swimming in the Long Island Sound, but for some reason, I now won’t go deeper than my knees in any natural body of water. I’m too afraid of jellyfish, crabs, sharks, you name it! This made me think about what else might be lurking beneath the surface, and Siren grew from there.

Have you ever been to a place that reminds you of Winter Harbor? Yes! I’ve actually never been to Winter Harbor, which is a real town in Maine, but I imagined much of it to look like various places I’ve visited in New Hampshire. The lake Vanessa’s family has a house on, for example, was based on Lake Kanasatka, where my family and I have spent quite a bit of time.

Any swoon worthy men that inspired the two main men in the book Siren? Simon’s a conglomerate of every smart, sweet, somewhat shy boy I’ve ever known—because those were the ones I was always drawn to, which made Simon that much more fun to write!

What are your favorite treats/ munchies? Writing in the summer months is always easier with iced coffee or some other cold drink nearby. When the weather cools that will probably change to hot tea or, even better, hot chocolate!

Is there a sequel planned and when is its release date? Yes, Siren 2 (official title TBA!) will be released next summer, and Siren 3 will be released the summer after that!

Thanks so much to Tricia for stopping by our site and answering our interview!

Book Review- SEA by Heidi R Kling

31 Jul, 2010 by in book review, putnam, Sea 5 comments

SEA
by Heidi R Kling
published June 10th 2010
by Putnam Juvenile
details Hardcover, 336 pages
url http://www.heidirkling.com/
isbn 0399251634
5 Stars

Synopsis: Haunted by recurring nightmares since her mother’s disappearance over the Indian ocean three years before, fifteen-year old California girl Sienna Jones reluctantly travels with her psychiatrist father’s volunteer team to six-months post-tsunami Indonesia where she meets the scarred and soulful orphaned boy, Deni, who is more like Sea than anyone she has ever met.

She knows they can’t be together, so why can’t she stay away from him? And what about her old best friend-turned-suddenly-hot Spider who may or may not be waiting for her back home? And why won’t her dad tell her the truth about her mother’s plane crash? The farther she gets from home, the closer she comes to finding answers.

And Sea’s real adventure begins

Ever since I first read about Heidi’s book on Twitter I was intrigued by premise and elements of the story. The teasers started a creative flurry of activity for me of photos and jewelry, and I requested our local Barnes and Noble order it in. The wait has been long, but worth it. What an outstanding debut novel by Heidi R Kling. Sea is lyrically written from the eyes of Sienna, a young girl who suffers from PTSD and nightmares after losing her mother. Once filled with adventure and a love of the ocean, she has changed. When her father, a renowned world psychiatrist gifts her a trip to Indonesia with Team Hope, Sienna is forced to face her biggest fears. From her childhood friendship with a surfer named Spider, to touching lives at an orphanage in Yogyakarta; this book brought me to tears. It’s one that leaves you thinking and feeling hopeful for the power of change. Love overcomes loss as Deni shows Sienna that a choice must be made to live each new day. SEA will stick with you for a long time as will the impressions of post-tsunami recovery in Indonesia. It’s a meaningful, culturally rich novel with purpose. And this is one of those reviews where I feel like words aren’t adequate to describe my experience. So much of SEA is what I felt inside. Thanks to Heidi R Kling for sharing her talent.

Visit Heidi’s SEA store which features our Etsy items at http://heidirkling.com/sea-store/
