Book Review- Dark Goddess

by Sarwat Chadda
Hardcover, 384 pages
Published January 25th 2011
by Hyperion Book
ISBN 1423127595
series Billi SanGreal #2
3.5 stars

New enemies, new romance, and new horrors,
Billi’s back, and it seems like the Unholy just can’t take a hint.
Still reeling from the death of her best friend, Kay, Billi’s thrust back into action when the Templars are called to investigate werewolf activity. And these werewolves are like nothing Bilil’s seen before.

They call themselves the Polenitsy – Man Killers. The ancient warrior women of Eastern Europe, supposedly wiped out centuries ago. But now they’re out of hiding and on the hunt for a Spring Child — an Oracle powerful enough to blow the volcano at Yellowstone — precipitating a Fimbulwinter that will wipe out humankind for good.

The Templars follow the stolen Spring Child to Russia, and the only people there who can help are the Bogatyrs, a group of knights who may have gone to the dark side. To reclaim the Spring Child and save the world, Billi needs to earn the trust of Ivan Romanov, an arrogant young Bogatyr whose suspicious of people in general, and of Billi in particular.

Dark Goddess is a page-turning, action-packed sequel that spans continents, from England to the Russian underworld and back. This is an adventure of folklore and myth become darkly real. Of the world running out of time. And of Billi SanGreal, the only one who can save it.

First of all I should say I am a huge fan of the first book in this series, Devil’s Kiss. That book inspired me to delve deeply into research about the Knights Templar and legends. So, when I was grocery shopping at a warehouse store last week and saw an ARC of Dark Goddess for sale in a box of truck abandoned books, I had to rescue it and take it home with me. I will admit it took me a while to get into this one. Probably because my heart was still with Kay who is now deceased. Though author Sarwat Chadda has taught “the dead need not linger”, I missed Kay. Billi seems completely emotionally detached in her mourning. And I was a bit taken aback by her treatment toward the child they rescue in the very first scene. Her loyalty to the Templar cause keeps her in my mind, a cold character, so at times I had a hard time relating to her.

I will say once Billi and her crew hit Russia the story picks up the pace. The Knights Templar are trying to find and save Vasilisa, Spring child who has the capability to interact with the earth’s elements. The world is suffering from a near apocalyptic volcanic explosion in Italy and Vasilisa is at the core of worsening or healing the damage. She is exactly what the Mother Russia, Baba Yaga is looking for to facilitate her world domination. The Templars must join forces with the Bogatyrs, their wealthy Russian warrior counterparts to protect the young Spring Child from a pack of werewolves sent to do Baba Yaga’s hunting. The Polinisty, ancient women werewolf warriors with their original Mongrol roots are one of my favorite parts of Dark Goddess. My other treasured scenes are those between Billi and Tsarovich Ivan Romanov. His introduction into the plot as he steps out of a Hummer is noteworthy. As well, the few vignettes where he and Billi are getting to know each other left me wanting more. I felt like yelling “stop action, emote!”

Overall, my feeling with this sequel… I was left hoping for chemistry and the fleshing out of Billi and Ivan’s relationship. I’m rooting for a resolution with Ivan in Billi’s love life. Dark Goddess is written like an action driven screen play, full gore and grit. It would make a great movie. Sarwat Chadda’s setting and detailed descriptions make for a tapestry of visual richness. I will pick up a book three if there is one because I find these books intriguing. Plus, I love Sarwat Chadda as a person. He is one of the first authors I met on twitter who will tweet you back & engage in conversation. If you’re a fan of The Lost Saint by Bree Despain or Dreaming Anastasia and Haunted by Joy Preble this one is for you! It is a great mix of Russian history, mythology and folklore that kept me entertained and engaged. Dark Goddess is rated PG-13 for violence.

Baba Yaga Oil Giveaway

08 Mar, 2011 by in sarwat chadda 21 comments

Our Etsy giveaway today is inspired by the book Dark Goddess by Sarwat Chadda. Billi SanGreal is in for the fight of her life against Mother Russia, Baba Yaga…her special oil was donated by the shop owner at Rita’s Spiritual Goods.

“Rita’s Spiritual Goods is your place for good juju, tools created and inspired by the energy and spirit of real life, what you need when you need it. I channel the magic of the energy in each moment of real life, whether it is happy, sad, frustration, confusion, quiet, meditation, bliss, love, pain, family, friends, foes etc., and let those moments inspire me into creation. Each recipe is unique to its own and each magical working full of love and energy and always made when the moon is right.

I have had many magical things happen in my life and experienced many unexplained events. I believe whole heartedly in the spirit that embodies everything around us and within us. I believe in earth angels, guardian angels and ghosts. I believe in fairies. I believe in signs. I believe in soul mates and kindred spirits. I believe in rituals and praying. I believe in positive energy. Most of all I believe in magic.

Description: Baba Yaga is the old woman of autumn, the archetype of the fearsome witch. Her roots lie in the ancient Slavic goddess of death and birth, whose wheat sheaves in the autumn fields hold the promise of winter survival and spring’s growth. Baba Yaga flies through the air in a mortar, rowing with a pestle, or in a cauldron, sweeping the traces of her path with a broom.

Her realm is the birch forests, birch being the tree of beginnings and endings. Baba Yaga represents the power of old age, the power of the archetype of witch, and most of all, the power of the cycles of life, death and rebirth. Although she is mostly portrayed as a terrifying old crone, Baba Yaga can also play the role of a helper and wise woman. The Earth Mother, like all forces of nature, though often wild and untamed, can also be kind. In her guise as wise hag, she sometimes gives advice and magical gifts to heroes and the pure of heart. The hero or heroine of the story often enters the crone’s domain searching for wisdom, knowledge and truth. She is all-knowing, all seeing and all-revealing to those who would dare to ask. She is said to be a guardian spirit of the fountain of the Waters of Life and of Death. Baba Yaga is the Arch-Crone, the Goddess of Wisdom and Death, the Bone Mother. Wild and untamable, she is a nature spirit bringing wisdom and death of ego, and through death, rebirth.

Baba Yaga rules over the elements. Her faithful servants are the White Horseman, the Red Horseman and the Black Horseman. She is a goddess of wisdom, rebirth, magick, she has much to teach you, protection, especially protection of the home. This is the perfect ritual oil to be used in the fall and spring as it draws upon death as well as rebirth. “

Book Review- Possession by Elana Johnson

07 Mar, 2011 by in Possession, simon schuster, utah authors 6 comments

Possession
By Elana Johnson
Expected publication: June 7, 2011
by Simon & Schuster
ISBN 139781442417618
5 stars
Summary: Girls don’t walk with boys, and they never even think about kissing them. But no one makes Vi want to break the Rules more than Zenn…and since the Thinkers have chosen him as Vi’s future match, how much trouble can one kiss cause? The Thinkers may have brainwashed the rest of the population, but Vi is determined to think for herself.

But the Thinkers are unusually persuasive, and they’re set on convincing Vi to become one of them…starting by brainwashing Zenn. Vi can’t leave Zenn in the Thinkers’ hands, but she’s wary of joining the rebellion, especially since that means teaming up with Jag. Jag is egotistical, charismatic, and dangerous–everything Zenn’s not. Vi can’t quite trust Jag and can’t quite resist him, but she also can’t give up on Zenn. This is a game of control or be controlled. And Vi has no choice but to play.

I first picked up this book from Simon Schuster as an E-ARC and then last week when I got a paper copy in the mail you know what I did? Something I’ve only ever done with a handful of books…I read it again. The paper in my hands and the awesome cover was too big a temptation to pass up. I loved Possession even more the second time around with it’s layers of meaning and depth. Once you know what’s going on with the main characters and reach the surprise ending, I’m sure you will want to do the same.

I felt an immediate draw to Possession’s protagonist Vi with her sarcastic, fiery personality. She is one strong 15 year old who stands up for herself and isn’t afraid to throw punches. Victoria Schoenfeld is a water worker living in the Goodlands with mom after her father went missing and sister died working in the hands of the government. Vi’s a free thinker who’s had more than one brush with the law. So when she’s caught crossing borders to meet her match Zenn, a newly recruited special forces agent, the Greenies want consequences for Vi. They wish to rule a society where their model citizens, Goodies are “walking paper dolls” devoid of personality. All must plug into transmissions including messages about not lying and sticking to the rules. But Vi has stopped plugging in and has a mind of her own. Those in charge have an upper hand with advanced technology capable of modifying memories, scanning fingerprints and tracking identities. Vi can feel the tech in her bones and though her father invented it, she’s not convinced it’s not all that it seems. In the end it’s a choice for Vi between “control or don’t control, alone or together, Zenn or Jag, duty or death.” (p.366)

Jag…oh Jag. Bad boy who likes to read, leader of the Resistance, lover of wicked hair and distributor of hair gel & illegal tech. He stole my heart with his laughter, calmness, and laid back personality. He’ll snag yours the first time he utters the words “nice” and shrugs his shoulders. But readers beware that Jag is not alone in his efforts to win Vi and freedom, Zenn is fighting behind enemy lines.

Elana Johnson is genius. She’s crafted characters that push and pull you in all directions. There is not a clear cut line between what is bad and what is good. The last 1/3 of the book feels like a choose your own adventure quest for the truth, full of action and suspense. Possession is an ingenious mix of dystopian, paranormal and science fiction that had me thinking long after I finished the book. If you’re a fan of Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies series, prepare yourself for something even more mind blowing. Control or be controlled? Join the Resistance.

With the release of the book Red Riding Hood by Sarah Blakley-Cartwright, Catherine Hardwick and the movie debut just a week away I started searching the ETSY world for some great Red Riding Hood giveaways. I ran into author and illustrator Marie Letourneau who’s artwork is absolutely dreamy!

Fans of Little Red, like us, will adore her etsy shop Le French Circus “Bonjour Mon Ami! My name is Marie Letourneau, I live in New York and I am a children’s book author and illustrator. Book Review- My Unfair Godmother

04 Mar, 2011 by in my unfair godmother 1 comment

by Janette Rallison
Hardcover, 320 pages
Expected publication: April 12, 2011
by Walker Books for Young Readers
ISBN 0802722369
series: My Fair Godmother #2

4 stars

Tansy Miller has always felt that her divorced father has never had enough time for her. But mistakenly getting caught on the wrong side of the law wasn’t exactly how she wanted to get his attention. Enter Chrysanthemum “Chrissy” Everstar, Tansy’s fairy in shining, er, high heels. Chrissy is only a fair godmother, of course, so Tansy’s three wishes don’t exactly go according to plan. And if bringing Robin Hood to the twenty-first century isn’t bad enough for Tansy, being transported back to the Middle Ages to deal with Rumpelstiltskin certainly is. She’ll need the help of her blended family, her wits, and especially the cute police chief ‘s son to stop the gold-spinning story from spinning wildly out of control. Janette Rallison pulls out all the stops in this fresh, fun-filled follow-up to the popular My Fair Godmother.

Having not read the first book in this series, I would say book 2 stands strongly and beautifully on its own. Janette Rallison does an awesome Fairy Tale mash up of Robin Hood and Rumpelstiltskin with a sprinkle of romance and a cherry on top- the lesson that we all create our own destiny. Her modern day fable starts off with Tansy Miller who just can’t catch a break. Tansy’s little sister seems to outshine her in every way. As she pursues her Broadway career with mom, Tansy is shipped off to live with her father. Daddy dearest and new step family have a life of their own and Tansy feels abandoned. So, when your pathetic-o-meter tells you you are 78% pathetic, why not go for the local bad boy? Little does Tansy know what trouble she is about to get herself into when she hooks up with juvenile delinquent Bo. It’s not long before her sorry tail ends up in the local police station for a crime she didn’t commit. What’s even worse is that the one soul she shares her story with ends up being undercover agent/son of the local Sheriff!

Hudson and Tansy start off on the wrong foot as he becomes the vehicle for Tansy’s newest reputation as a snitch. Not only is she grounded big time, but she’s lost her boyfriend and the trust of her parents. Here is where Chrysanthemum Everstar, fairy Godmother in training steps in to save the day… and fails miserably. With the “help” of her leprechaun sidekick Clover, Everstar manages to transport Tansy and her family back to the Middle Ages. There they are forced to make their way through a muddled wish gone bad. And who should appear as the guard at the prison where Tansy is being held…the boy who turned her in back in the present time, Hudson!

These two have a lot to work out. In the end I loved their story. Tansy needs to find her own moral to the book being written about her life and Hudson faces his inner battle of losing someone he loves. My Unfair Godmother is delightful and charming and it’s a book I will pass on to my daughters as a squeaky clean read. Thanks so much to author Janette Rallison for sending me an ARC. Now if you’ll excuse me…I am off to pick all of her other books!
