Review

Sophie and Evan are at the wrong place at the wrong time in a bank robbery, but at the right place to meet one another and help each other through the trauma. A successful wedding planner and a corporate business man in banking, their world again collide in another joint venture and sparks collide. This book had me laughing out loud. It reminded me of the movie Wedding Planner (which I had to watch after I finished reading A Marriage of Inconvenience). I loved Sophie’s determination to keep things professional and Evan’s calming influence in her life. The author does a great job of keeping the internal conflicts real and the external mishaps humorous and light.

Once again Harlequin Heartwarming series delivers a clean, fun escape. It’s been a while since I have enjoyed sailing through a funny book in one day, but Amy Vastine has written a gem that will leave you with a huge smile your face. Thanks for the complimentary copy for the tour!

Content and trigger warning: There is mention of burglary nightmares, a hold up and a mild anxiety attack, kissing.

Beatrice Walker thought she lived in a normal world—that is until she learned she’s a living hostel for an alien energy source, and apparently the answer to preventing extinction.

Bea has no memory of her last moments with her mother. The week they’d gone missing is a complete mystery. Suddenly moved back to her hometown with her father, Bea has rekindled her friendship with her two best friends—and seems to have caught the attention of an arrogant, yet gorgeous boy named Cash Kingston. But there’s more to Cash than his annoying attitude and good looks. Cash isn’t human, and he’s now in charge of protecting Bea from those who know what she keeps safe inside her: the energy source that once belonged to his murdered girlfriend.

Tensions mount as Bea learns her energy source must be paired with the one Cash holds to protect both their planets from an imminent threat. But what Bea doesn’t realize is there’s more to her than being human a host, that her feelings for Cash are not just a prophetic plan that will save their planets, and that the fate of everything lies in her choices.

Mission Stories Motion Picture Launch and Giveaway

New Major Motion Picture, MISSION STORIES, Launches Ambitious New Media Franchise

-Trailer Debuts Wednesday, April 7 & Film Opens Exclusively in Theaters on Friday, May 7-

Salt Lake City – Excel Entertainment announced today the creation of a new media franchise, MISSION STORIES, focused entirely on telling stories of missionaries for The Church of Jesus-Christ of Latter-day Saints. The franchise launches with the theatrical release of MISSION STORIES, a moving retelling of three true stories of missionary work. The theatrical trailer for the film debuts on Wednesday, April 7 at missionstories.com and the feature film opens exclusively in theaters on Friday, May 7 distributed jointly with Purdie Distriution.

Assembled as an anthology of three stories told over four chapters, the project was created by the filmmaking team of Bryce Clark (writer, producer, director), Jason Allred (producer), Crystal Myler (writer) and Arthur Van Wagenen (executive producer) after meeting with a full room of former mission presidents and their companions. “We heard so many incredible stories — story after story of events that cannot be simply coincidences,” explained Bryce Clark. “Every story shows that God has his hand in the work and people’s lives are being transformed and saved through this work.”
“People assume they know what a “mission story” depicted on the big screen will be like,” said Arthur Van Wagenen. “Our goal in this film and the entire MISSION STORIES franchise is to tell stories from not just the perspective of missionaries, but from the perspective of people who make the radical choice to become disciples of Jesus Christ.”
The film tells three true stories, including “Hermanos” that focuses on a father overcoming a crisis of faith so that he can baptize his family. “Chuck” tells the story of a man questioning whether God truly loves him and learning to see himself as God does. Finally, “Full Circle” is told in the opening and closing chapters of the film, and shows that the power of faith applied over years or even decades can ultimately bear fruit in overcoming spiritual issues as serious as depression and addiction.

“’Full Circle’ is an especially personal story for me because a character is based on me and the culmination of this story played out as we were developing this project,” explained Clark. “When people watch the film they’ll see when people struggle the Lord never gives up on them, and how the faith of others can help rescue them. I hope sharing this story may inspire others who are facing similar challenges.”

“The MISSION STORIES film is only the first step in creating a full Mission Stories brand and media franchise,” said Van Wagenen. “We are creating an avenue where people can submit their own mission stories which can be shared with the world to help increase people’s faith and sense of worth.”
Going forward, Mission Stories will become an incubator for up-and-coming writers and directors who will continue to tell these important stories for years to come.”

For more information and to see the film’s trailer, visit missionstories.com

Message from the Director:

When I initially approached Mission Stories I thought I may not be the best choice to direct because I did not serve a mission. However, as I developed these stories I recognized how much missionary work has touched my life. In fact, in one of these stories a character is based on me. Through this experience I’ve learned just how powerful love, faith, and forgiveness are and that redemption is available to all of us no matter the circumstances of our lives. Everyone has a story to tell and I believe in the power of sharing stories. I hope that audiences will be touched by the themes of mercy and redemption in these stories.

Review

Drew is a prestigious criminal lawyer in the height of his career when he is implicated in charges of witness tampering. He suddenly becomes a pariah in circles and places he once thrived. All he has worked for is gone overnight and his name is dragged through the press. He is not guilty, but assumed so. Determined to protect his friends and family from the political blackmail and ruin from an elected official, he turns inward as he seeks to clear his family and reputation. The author does a wonderful job of depicting life on the inside of political blackmail and retaliation, as well as its effects on the children, families and associations of someone the insider seeks to pull down. Integrity and taking down others in their path, mean nothing to these types of politicians seeking power for re-election.

Molly is also a powerhouse. She has a reputation for being the best of the best as an attorney. Relocating to San Francisco, she has to rebuild connections and networks. Once, a student with Drew and best friends, she has been retained by Drew’s mayor mother to clear his name in court. She has some work to do of her own in gaining custody of her baby. Together, Drew and Molly have a past in college as best friends and study partners.

Three Makes a Family is a clean, light read with an emphasis on healthy family relationships. Both main characters have powerful personalities with insecurities life has thrown their way. I enjoyed the blind character and the sweet love she shares with Molly’s daughter Hazel. I also thought Drew’s pro bono work with domestic violence victims was beautiful. He is a kind, compassionate and sensitive caretaker to baby Hazel. There was some minutiae in reading through in the rich descriptions of every day get togethers with friends and family with not much action, but it’s a great escape read. Cari Lynn Webb knows how to portray her main characters in a vivid and lifelike way. I will look for more titles from this author in the future, and I love Harlequin’s Heartwarming series for its clean content. Thank you for the complimentary copy!

Author Interview

Can you tell us a little bit about the WHAT BEAUTY THERE IS and the characters?

The book follows Jack on a quest to find a suitcase of stolen money as he crosses paths with Bardem, the charismatic, merciless thief who’s hunting the same cash. Jack’s only hope comes in the form of Ava, who decides to help him. But Ava’s secret—that she’s Bardem’s daughter—guarantees devastation.

What are you working on now?

I’m writing the story of a teen girl seeking justice for her imprisoned brother. It is the story of someone driven to right a wrong. It is also an exploration of power and inequity.

Were any of the characters in the book inspired by people from your real life?

Ava and Jack both embody parts of me. Ava’s thinking is mine. Her strengths and her struggles. Then Jack, he’s willful like me, and this gets him in trouble. Writing their hopes and fears felt very familiar to me because their thoughts were intensely personal. Apart from that, Sheriff Doyle was inspired by my father. Like Doyle, he was law enforcement. He spent his life helping people.

Who was your favorite character to write? What about your least favorite?

I adore Matty. He’s a kid who is easy to root for. He has this pure heart. I love his earnestness. My least favorite—I didn’t have one. I wrote this whole book, and never once did a character bore me.

What is your favorite passages in WHAT BEAUTY THERE IS?

My favorite passages are Ava’s. These are the parts that I love the most, because they came from my life, so these are the parts that are most intimate and sacred to me. It was brutal to write them, but it was also beautiful. Like looking at old photographs of a loved one who you’ve lost. These passages are almost memory. I feel haunted by them.

What kind of research did you have to do for the story?

I did a lot of research on meth distribution and its impact on rural communities. I looked at the chain of trafficking. Meth is the biggest drug problem in Idaho. It is different from other drugs in that meth has an element of criminality that goes along with it: of abuse, and violence. The number of adult people incarcerated in Idaho is heartbreaking. Writing about its effect on teens and kids was important to me because they are the ones living with the bad choices of adults in their families. They are also the ones making a difference. They see the ruin meth causes and are choosing a different way forward.

Who is your ultimate book boyfriend/girlfriend?

I just finished The Ones We’re Meant to Find by Joan He. So it is Hero.

What inspired you to write YA?

I sometimes hear people talk about YA as if it is somehow lesser. I couldn’t disagree more vehemently. Young people are complex and layered and amazing, and so should be their stories. I write for young adults because books mattered so much to me at their age. I feel like I have something to say to them. I also want to know what they think. I want to talk and have a conversation.

What are you reading right now? Or what do you have on your TBR that you’re dying to read?

On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous, by Ocean Vuong. It is on my nightstand.

Review

This remake of Robin Hood with a fantasy fairy tale twist is full of action! Dru is living among the thieves of the forest, reclaiming from royalty what is taxed and redistributing property to keep the people alive. She’s a syphon with supernatural powers, disguised as a boy for her pillaging. Hawkin, one of the band of brothers is raising Pea on his own after his village was attacked and destroyed. The two become a support to one another and possibly more. In a chance encounter they meet with Dodge, a Royal Prince who makes the balance tilt in Dru’s universe.

I loved the pacing of the book and the unique retelling of old mythical tales. My only setback was the battle scenes which were a bit too violent, gory and graphic for me. It was mid evil times, so it’s realistic to the period, but not fun to read. I also wish the relationship between Dru and Dodge would have been more fleshed out and more showing, less telling. That being said, I was fully engaged the entire time and am happy there’s a sequel where the characters have a chance to be fully fleshed out. With a villain worthy of a Disney movie and a page turning plot, this is a fantastical adventure!

Content and trigger warnings: mention of rape, abuse of women and children, drinking, heavy violence, blood.

About Chase:

Chase E.F. Bolling has also published as Chase Bolling.

You can say Chase is a father, revolutionary, and author in that order. Born and raised in Bridgeport, CT and he grew up in a proud Afro-indigenous family with strong roots to the military, activism, and public service. Surrounded by strong BIPOC women, his grandmother, mother and aunt were all heavily involved in local politics. While Chase spent his youth a delightful contradiction pretty much being Huey and Riley of the Boondocks at the same time. His mom did her best, and made sure he was cultured, educated and raised with a W.E.B Dubois-esque talented tenth, sense of responsibility. She kept him around good mentors, and even made him take etiquette classes…but there was and likely still is a hoodlum streak a mile wide. While on one side Chase was always well read, well spoken, with a firm belief in the edification of his community, a youth involved with street gangs and other illegal activities and he found himself in trouble…often. He played football, lacrosse and got into historical martial arts which Chase still practices to this day. He spent years in the indie hip-hop scene as The Legendary Thug Poet, until a near fatal car accident left me with a traumatic brain injury. Now he mainly sticks to activism and being an author, and now proudly serves as director of SF/For the Culture the fantasy, sci-fi, and speculative fiction side of W. Clark Publishing!

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before meets You’ve Got Mail in this charming and hilarious rom-com following two teen booksellers whose rivalry is taken to the next level as they compete for the top bookseller bonus.

Shoshanna Greenberg loves working at Once Upon, her favorite local bookstore. And with her moms fighting at home and her beloved car teetering on the brink of death, the store has become a welcome escape.

When her boss announces a holiday bonus to the person who sells the most books, Shoshanna sees an opportunity to at least fix her car, if none of her other problems. The only person standing in her way? New hire Jake Kaplan.

Jake is an affront to everything Shoshanna stands for. He doesn’t even read! But somehow his sales start to rival hers. Jake may be cute (really cute), and he may be an eligible Jewish single (hard to find south of Atlanta), but he’s also the enemy, and Shoshanna is ready to take him down.

But as the competition intensifies, Jake and Shoshanna grow closer and realize they might be more on the same page than either expects…

Review

If you’ve ever worked in a bookstore or retail around the holiday season, you will appreciate Recommended for You! Shoshanna’s car is broken down and with her employer running a competition for a pay bonus, she is out for blood. In comes brand new employee Jake, who doesn’t even read, and you have a recipe for fierce job site fighting. Be prepared for stealing customers, snarky comments and a fight for the P.A. system. There’s baking, widely diverse characters, and real life drama. I appreciated that the book is suitable for middle grade or younger adult readers. It also highlights Jewish culture and a strong single mother/ son duo. The relationships are relatable, with plenty of room for growth. Shoshanna is in the arc of learning to make mature decisions instead of fixing everything around her. Frank is inventive and creative. Pick this one up during the holidays– perfect around Christmas and Hanukkah.

Thank you Margaret K. McElderry Books for the light bookish rom-com!

Content and trigger warnings: divorce, online bullying, codependency, absent parent, 2 female parents.

For Lila Reyes, a summer in England was never part of the plan. The plan was 1) take over her abuela’s role as head baker at their panadería, 2) move in with her best friend after graduation, and 3) live happily ever after with her boyfriend. But then the Trifecta happened, and everything—including Lila herself—fell apart.

Worried about Lila’s mental health, her parents make a new plan for her: Spend three months with family friends in Winchester, England, to relax and reset. But with the lack of sun, a grumpy inn cook, and a small town lacking Miami flavor (both in food and otherwise), what would be a dream trip for some feels more like a nightmare to Lila…until she meets Orion Maxwell.

A teashop clerk with troubles of his own, Orion is determined to help Lila out of her funk, and appoints himself as her personal tour guide. From Winchester’s drama-filled music scene to the sweeping English countryside, it isn’t long before Lila is not only charmed by Orion, but England itself. Soon a new future is beginning to form in Lila’s mind—one that would mean leaving everything she ever planned behind.

Review

What a delightful jaunt into the English countryside! I wasn’t sure how the Miami flavor would mesh with the English roots but it worked! Lila is sent to live with her English relative for 8 weeks in an attempt to recover her mental health after loss and break ups. She is a chef who finds her best work baking, but Polly, the English queen of her kitchen isn’t too thrilled to give up any control. In a mash up of scones and Cuban ingredients, with recipes and treats it’s one mouth watering adventure. I loved the Spanish phrases mingled in to the conversation.

Orion is a local tea vendor who likes to sample whatever is cooking. He’s wise beyond his years and tender hearted. He is a man of cozy sweaters and inherited vintage motorcycles. His group of friends is wonderful. So much good. I truly enjoyed the dynamics and the small town feel. Thank you Atheneum Books for Young Readers for the dreamy escape.

Content and trigger warnings: dementia, mental health breakdown, grief, moderate swearing, underage drinking, bisexual attraction.

Quote

“He dashed his hand toward the muted stars. “I’ve stopped wishing on those long ago. I mean, I still have hopes and dreams. And it certainly doesn’t mean I sit around waiting for things to happen. But I’ve mad this deal with the universe. I’ve learned not to ask for more of it than what I’m given, both good and bad. ..I’ve grown to find peace and acceptance in not fighting what I can’t control. I don’t come to God or the universe as a beggar anymore”
