Phantom Universe
by Laura Kreitzer
Paperback, 240 pages
Published: Feb. 15, 2011
by Obsidian Mountain Publishing
ISBN 0982903340
series: Summer Chronicles #1
4.5 stars

Summary: Sold into slavery to pirates at the young age of four, Summer learns to survive the rough seas of subterfuge and thieves through silence. When the boat she’s lived on most of her life is destroyed, Summer finds herself washed up on the shore of a new world, a phantom universe full of the bizarre and extraordinary. She meets Gage, the one boy who understands the girl with no speech. But when their lives are put on the line, will Summer finally call out? Or will all be lost in the fathomless depth of silence?

I’ve been hot on Laura Kreitzer’s tail since picking up her first book Shadow of The Sun last year and giving it 5 stars. This is the first ebook ARC I read in 2011 and what an awesome adventure it was!

Think of Hush by Donna Jo Napoli spliced with Inside Out by Maria Snyder and the Uglies Series by Scott Westerfeld. It’s a combination of pirate slavery tale meets time travel and poof 200 years into the dystopian future. The book starts out delving into the rather graphic past of a four year old sold into modern day slavery. Main heroine Summer’s back story is not easy to swallow and not recommended for children under age 16. That being said, I relished Summer’s present. Laura Kreitzer blows me away with her imagination with writing which is deep and rich, her characters multi-faceted.

Summer is not your average girl, but one suffering from PTSD which makes her mute, at times catatonic and riddled with severe anxiety. She communicates via taps and written notes with her best friend Landon aboard the Cosmos, slave ship on the seas of 2010. Twelve years pass in slavery until the crew is attacked by people from Summer’s mysterious childhood. Washed ashore on an island and launched into the future dazed and confused she meets main main number two, Gage. He is determined to win her trust and help her overcome the past, if they could just figure out what exactly that past means. Phantom Universe is a time travel adventure of a group of teens against all odds and a girl with unprecedented potential. It’s a series to watch because of the original premise and solid writing.

But, dang Laura for making sequels with a cliff hanger endings! You’ll always want more. Book two, Forsaken Harbor is due out in July (which is a good thing for those like me who hate to wait.) Guaranteed I will be picking it up. I want it now! Thanks so much to Laura and Obsidian Mountain publishing for the sneak peak to her new Summer series. Once again, Laura Kreitzer carried me away to her world and jump started my love for reading.

Thank you for joining Fire and Ice as the first stop on the Phantom Universe blog tour! Be sure to check out the rest of the schedule on Laura’s website.

Jason Walker has often wished his life could be a bit less predictable–until a routine day at the zoo ends with Jason suddenly transporting from the hippo tank to a place unlike anything he’s ever seen. In the past, the people of Lyrian welcomed visitors from the Beyond, but attitudes have changed since the wizard emperor Maldor rose to power. The brave resistors who opposed the emperor have been bought off or broken, leaving a realm where fear and suspicion prevail.
In his search for a way home, Jason meets Rachel, who was also mysteriously drawn to Lyrian from our world. With the help of a few scattered rebels, Jason and Rachel become entangled in a quest to piece together the word of power that can destroy the emperor, and learn that their best hope to find a way home will be to save this world without heroes.

Book Review- Will Work For Prom Dress

28 Feb, 2011 by in will work for prom dress 2 comments

by Aimee Ferris
Paperback, 240 pages
Published February 8th 2011

by EgmontUSA
ISBN 1606841416
4.5 stars

Quigley Johnson has, reluctantly, given up the rest of her last year of high school to take part in her best friend Ann’s Betterment Plan, which will turn them into the best-dressed, most sought-after, most admired girls at their senior formal. Because – hey – who doesn’t want the perfect prom, complete with a dream dress and a devastatingly handsome date?

But the prom costs money – lots of money – and even though the girls could easily have Ann’s mom design their dresses (she’s only Victoria Parisi, one of the most famous designers in the world), Ann insists that they pay their own way. And that’s how Quigley gets stuck making artistic topping masterpieces on frozen pizzas canvases, before becoming a live model for Ms. Parisi’s fashion design class, where she meets Zander.

He’s cute, and cool, and funny, with a killer design sensibility (even if he can’t sketch). But is he too good to be true? And what about David, the hot, talented artist at school, who’s also kind of a jerk, but won’t leave Quigley alone? And Ann – she started the Betterment Plan to improve Quigley and herself, but it seems like it’s ripping their friendship to shreds.

This road to the prom dream may just end in disaster.

Quigley and Ann are in their last year of high school and on a mission to improve themselves just in time for prom. Their Betterment Plan includes eating right, exercise and plenty of off the wall jobs to pay for the perfect dress. The girls find themselves in a frozen pizza factory making artistic creations with sauce and pepperoni, sitting in as the dead man at a mystery murder dinner and even part of a float in their local parade. Quigley always seems to get the short end of the stick in every finagled job, so she is hesitant when Ann’s world famous designer mom, Victoria Parisi, offers them a gig as models for her fashion design class at the local college.

Quigley is everything your average student, not overly concerned with her body or standing out. So it’s no surprise when her perfect beautiful friend Ann lands all of the votes for first pick as model in the class. Zander sides with Quigley and in his humble sincere way slowly wins his way to her heart. Meanwhile, Ann is busy with Lance, the Spikester, who has a past of his own. But both design class boys have competition awaiting them at the High School.

As a reader you’ll never know until the very end if Ann picks T-Shirt, the local rich boy who wears his daily motto on his tee or if Quigley will turn arch nemesis self-proclaimed art King David into more than just an enemy.

Author Aimee Ferris will have you laughing out loud with the funny, awkward situations going on and the richly developed characters. But hidden beneath the pre-prom fluff are many real life lessons about choosing a college, making amends with parents and finding yourself amidst peer pressure. She does a great job of teaching that bad choices have life long consequences and you can’t judge a person by your first impressionWill Work For Prom Dress is a clean, light read that I would recommend to all readers. It offered me a nice break from heavy writing and I loved the artistic elements of photography, drawing and dress design sprinkled into the plot. I can’t wait for more from Ms. Freeman. Her blog alone is enough to have you in stitches as you travel back to the scary days of big hair in YA promapalooza. Thanks so much to Goodman Media for sending me such a fun pick. “Measure twice, cut once!”

Dearly Departed
by Tristi Pinkston
Published by Walnut Springs Press
January 2011
Softcover: 270 pages
ISBN# 978-1-935217-89-3

Ida Mae Babbitt has done her community service and is a reformed woman – no more law-breaking for her. But when Arlette’s granddaughter Eden discovers a mystery in a fancy nursing home, Ida Mae – with the
perfect excuse of a broken wrist and a broken ankle – checks herself into the place. After all, it is for the greater good. Soon she’s buzzing around in her motorized wheelchair, questioning the residents and swiping files from the office. She’s bound and determined to get to the bottom of this case. But can she solve the mystery before she becomes the next
victim?

Dearly Departed
is a bit like Golden Girls meets Nancy Drew. Three partners in crime solving, Ida Mae, Tansy and Arlette make up the “Secret Sisters” and the name of their game is to crack murder cases. The only hitch is that Ida Mae is starting to show her years. After two consecutive falls winds up out of commission. But, never fear…she is also the perfect candidate to solve the latest who done it at the Shady Pines Care Center, where one resident has already ended up suspiciously dead. Eden, the local obituary editor for the paper is called in to investigate the murder by a relative of the deceased so, she sends Ida Mae into the thick of the crime scene. Soon the Secret Sisters are literally wheeling themselves around sniffing out clues which leads to high speed chases in their wheelchairs. Can Eden and Ida Mae figure out who is guilty before they themselves are thrown into harm’s way?
This book kept me chuckling, and has a nice side plot of romance coming in bloom between Eden and co-worker Kevin/ Ida Mae and George. Kevin is quite the catch, so I may have to read the next book in the Secret Sisters series to see what happens! This is a clean cozy mystery that is sure to have you craving chicken casserole and a healthy dose of knitting lessons. Well done Tristi!

Book Review- Borrowed Light

22 Feb, 2011 by in Uncategorized 3 comments

Borrowed Light
by Carla Kelly
Paperback, 416 pages
Published February 8th 2011

by Cedar Fort, Incorporated
ISBN 1599554666
5 stars

Julia Darling never expected to cook for some cowboys in Wyoming, but when she breaks off her engagement in Salt Lake City, it s the perfect opportunity for her to escape. Determined to stick the job out, Julia faces her biggest challenge yet letting go of borrowed light to find her own testimony. Set in the early 1900s, this is one romantic adventure you ll never forget!

Oh my heavens. THIS is why I love “my job.” I received this book in the mail from Cedar Fort for review and it was a huge leap out of my ordinary genre, but what a book! Borrowed Light is the first novel I’ve read by Carla Kelly, who is a well established regency romance author for Harlequin and recently entered the LDS market. Apparently her past readers are unhappy about the switch, but I for one could not be happier. I will be purchasing and passing on anything else this author has to offer from Cedar Fort in the future. Her writing is so full of detail, her characters alive and the historical setting spot on. Carla knows her stuff. She has researched and stepped into the lives of her heroes. Borrowed Light easily garners 5 stars.

Julia Darling is an engaged woman living in Salt Lake City, new graduate of the Fannie Farmer cooking school in Boston. Her fiance Ezra is the perfect gentleman and just what everyone thinks she needs, but Julia just isn’t feeling the fire with him. On a whim, she decides to break the bad news and answer a newspaper ad from a “desperate rancher” in Wyoming who needs a full-time cook. Darling has no idea what she is getting her self into when she steps off the train into the rugged land of cattle ranching and rough conditions. Her new boss, Mr. Otto has a strange and highly rumored past which involves a dead man and carefully guarded secrets. Does Darling have what is takes to survive the experience? And can she find her footing and faith in the Wild West?

There is danger, romance, and answers to prayer packed away in a tightly wrapped, swift moving adventure. Fans of Hattie Big Sky will enjoy the flip side to the Homesteading experience. I could literally kiss this book and you’ll soon find out why everyone in Wyoming wants to kiss the cook! No content warnings…this is a squeaky clean read. To enter to win a copy of your own, enter here on Goodreads and be sure to head over to author Carla Kelly’s website for more details!
