Reena Manji doesn’t love her career, her single status, and most of all, her family inserting themselves into every detail of her life. But when caring for her precious sourdough starters, Reena can drown it all out. At least until her father moves his newest employee across the hall--with hopes that Reena will marry him.

But Nadim’s not like the other Muslim bachelors-du-jour that her parents have dug up. If the Captain America body and the British accent weren’t enough, the man appears to love eating her bread creations as much as she loves making them. She sure as hell would never marry a man who works for her father, but friendship with a neighbor is okay, right? And when Reena’s career takes a nosedive, Nadim happily agrees to fake an engagement so they can enter a couples video cooking contest to win the artisan bread course of her dreams.

As cooking at home together brings them closer, things turn physical, but Reena isn’t worried. She knows Nadim is keeping secrets, but it’s fine— secrets are always on the menu where her family is concerned. And her heart is protected… she’s not marrying the man. But even secrets kept for self preservation have a way of getting out, especially when meddling parents and gossiping families are involved.

Review

I picked this one up based on the cover and was not disappointed! Bread baker Reena cooks up magic in her apartment. Her new neighbor? English accent, flirty, asks her out. Only problem is he is the “facilitated match” arranged by their parents. Reena is trying her hardest to get out from under the overbearing influence of her parents, and Nadim works for her father. When they share a drink at the local pub and bake together, it seems sparks fly naturally. Their families hold secrets aplenty and pasts that prove to interfere.

Read this in one day. I loved the way the two banter and push and pull together even though they have vowed to not get married. Nadim is good for Reena, they calm one another and help each other through their employment stressors. The sourdough starters are a fun side element. The book also addresses the dangers of trying to live up to an image and realistically navigated depression and mental health issues. Supe fun read!

Content and trigger warnings: discussion of eating disorders, mental illness, open marriage, “F” word, drinking. Adult.

What happens when the proprietress of Siren's Retreat discovers the charming romantic she's been corresponding with is same villain turning her beloved property into a gaming hell?

When not responding to advice column letters, entrepreneurial widow Mrs. Deborah Cartwright runs bright, beautiful Siren’s Retreat, legendary for helping her lovelorn guests find their perfect match. Deborah experienced love years before, and lightning does not strike twice. Although there might be a light flirtation with a certain anonymous letter-writer she’s definitely not falling for, there’s no time for romance. Not whilst a heartless blackguard is in town to wrest her beloved inn out from under her!

Clever, career-minded Mr. Patrick Gretham is the trusted man-of-business for a powerful lord, who is eager to turn this perfectly situated property wasted on lovebirds into a gambling hell the likes of which no one leaves with their fortunes intact. Over Deborah’s dead body! The beautiful proprietress hates everything Patrick stands for and will fight him every step of the way. Except when they find themselves on opposite sides of a plume. Or falling into each other’s embrace…

Review

The last in the Siren’s Retreat series focuses on the proprietress behind the hotel that promises to bring people together. Deborah Cartwright is a widow who is convinced lightning doesn’t strike twice when it comes to love. She and her husband were madly in love and helped others find their soulmates at their retreat. In steps Patrick Gretham who is the man of business for an Earl. He’s dead set on obtaining the property for his boss to ensure his future. In its place a gaming hall will be built. That plan goes off the rails when he meets Deborah. Can he risk his occupation and financial future for love?

A slow burn historical romance, it was clean and sweet. I enjoyed that the main characters are older and one is a widow. It’s nice to see them grow together a partners, working side by side. It’s also fun to see a woman take the reins in an era where she wasn’t given an equal chance due to the entailment of the property to her brother-in-law. I haven’t read the rest of the series, but I’m looking forward to it after this and having read Erica’s Wylde Winchesters series. Endnotes of the ARC also had links to free reads by Erica Ridley, so I’m adding more of her books to my TBR pile. Thanks to Netgalley and Webmotion for the advanced reading copy for review.

Content: clean, off page mention of intimacy, kissing.

Return of the Duke

Once Upon a Dukedom #3

by Lorraine Heath

Hardcover, 304 pages

Expected publication: July 26th 2022

by Avon Books

ISBN: 0063243202

Amazon (ad) * Goodreads

In the thrilling third book in New York Times bestselling author Lorraine Heath’s Once Upon a Dukedom series, the dashing son of a disgraced duke teams up with a sultry beauty to thwart an assassination plot against Queen Victoria.

When his father, the Duke of Wolfford, is hanged for an assassination attempt on Queen Victoria, Marcus Stanwick is stripped of everything. Vowing to return honor to his family, he seeks to expose the others involved in the treasonous plot and bring them to justice. His search forces him to turn to a woman he despises for her unforgiveable betrayal–a woman known as the heartless harlot.

Harboring secrets, Esme Lancaster has her own reasons for wanting to discover who’s behind the conspiracy that’s still afoot. She doesn’t trust Marcus but can’t deny the handsome devil makes her wonder if she does indeed possess a heart, one he could very easily steal.

As their hunt for the truth leads them into danger, Marcus finds Esme isn’t cold and calculating as he’d assumed but fire and brimstone, with courage and determination to match his own. Soon, they’re unable to deny their growing desire for each other. But giving into temptation comes at a cost, and they must decide if love is worth the risk of losing their one chance for redemption.

Review

Lorraine Heath is one of my all-time favorite go to authors for historical romance. Her Dutchess Hunt series installment number three starts with Wolff, Marcus Stanwick coming out of the shadows to confront his father’s mistress Esme. Living in hiding, he is out to clear his and his family’s names as accessories to treason. Esme is not at all what he is bargaining for. She’s younger than he thought, and the chemistry at their meeting in undeniable. Beneath the surface of her outward facade is much more than meets the eye. The two work together well as a team. There were a few stale moments with their informant “O,” but overall, I tore through this book. It’s good to see Marcus come out of his hardened shell.

Readers will also lean about the relationship between Queen Victoria and her personal guardsman as well as early spy trinkets in the final chapters/ epilogue. Victorian Romance with a twist! I cannot wait for the other characters to tell their stories and the Chessmen. Bring on more books.

Thank you to NetGalley, Avon and Harper Voyager for providing me with a free advanced reading copy of this book for review purposes.

Light the Way
(The Lighthouse Sisters #1)
By Lin Stepp
Christian Fiction, Contemporary Romance
Paperback & ebook, 292 Pages
April 1, 2022 by Mountain Hill Press

In this new coastal series, Lin Stepp transports her readers into the rich, colorful lives of Burke and her sisters, Lila, Gwen, and Celeste, who grew up at the Deveaux Inn and Lighthouse on a windswept island, accessible only by boat. Get ready to be introduced to the ups and downs, joys and sorrows, challenges and adventures of a Lighthouse Keeper.

Life had grown hard for Burke Deveaux at the family inn and lighthouse since her father died. She missed his warmth and still expected to see him walking into a room, his big laugh booming. Burke and her mother were gradually adjusting to the change, and Lila had come home this winter to help, but the workload was heavy. With spring coming and tourism picking up in the South Carolina Lowcountry, Burke welcomed Hal Jenkins’ request for his son Waylon to work for them. Waylon, retiring early from the Navy, knew the island and the lighthouse, having grown up nearby. Burke also knew Waylon well since they’d grown up together. He’d always been older, and she wondered how he’d see her now.

Waylon had been away from Edisto Island for over twelve years now, traveling around the world in the military, but it felt good to be home. He’d hated learning Lloyd Deveaux was gone, the warm-hearted Lighthouse Keeper he’d followed around as a boy. But he liked the idea of coming to stay at the lodge at Watch Island to help the Deveaux family with the inn, lighthouse, and nearly five-hundred acres of land the Lighthouse Station occupied. He knew Burke had picked up many of her father’s old tasks and he looked forward to seeing her again. He’d kept feelings for her clamped down for years but one look at her brought them surging back. How would he handle that with them working together?

Review

A clean Christian contemporary romance set on an island, Light the Way traces the daily struggles and triumphs of a lighthouse keepers family. Waylon and Burke are childhood friends who have grown up together. With the loss of Burke’s father, Waylon returns to help her family manage the upkeep of the Deveaux property. He is older now and has avoided his feelings for Burke and served in the Navy, but when the two reunite, he reveals his hand. I was expecting the characters to be in their twenties, but both are in their thirties and are given a second chance at love. The history and scenery surrounding them is interesting, their faith is woven throughout the story. There’s mention of prayer and devotion to service. I enjoyed the dynamic between the two main characters as well as the loyalty amongst the island families. An escape to Southern hospitality and the ways of the sand and sea. Thanks to Prism Book Tours and the author for the complimentary signed copy of the book for the tour.

In the 1990s American workplace, survival of the fittest is sometimes less about clawing your way to the top than developing good camouflage. And Audrey Rohmer is doing her very best to blend in as an undistinguished middle manager. Uninspired by her job and uneasy about her father’s new marriage, Audrey coasts through the work week leaning on her “partner in apathy” – an admin assistant named Pooter – to keep her relationship with the married head of her department from becoming water cooler gossip.

But when an old family friend-turned-Hollywood-superstar crashes on her doorstep in the midst of a publicity crisis, Audrey’s under-the-radar status quo gets upended, and the writing may literally be on the bathroom wall that secrets will find a way out.

Equally acerbic and heartfelt, In Light of Recent Events is both an endlessly engaging piece of storytelling and a fascinating commentary on workplaces, families, and fame.

Reviews:

“I really enjoyed IN LIGHT OF RECENT EVENTS. It’s a fast, fun, emotionally engaging novel about friendship, family, and the day-to-day horrors of middle management. Amy Klinger gives us a delightful cast of characters to relate to, laugh with, and, ultimately, root for.” — Matthew Norman, author of DOMESTIC VIOLETS

“With a wit as precise as an edge of a carefully cut diamond, In Light of Recent Events navigates universal workplace intrigues in this thoughtful story about love, friendship, and growing up.” — Jane Ward, author of In the Aftermath

Excerpt:

My interest in other lives was not kinky, just curious. Seeking out those everyday moments of poignancy or grace, silliness and tenderness, explosive scenes like the shattered window or quiet moments like someone slowly turning the blinds closed for the night.

Though not a skill most human resource professionals would actively seek in an employee, I found that the ability to likewise sit quietly and observe in the workplace provided a subtle advantage that seemed evolutionary in nature. Because really, at its most basic, an office (such as the one in which I worked) was a living demonstration of the pack mentality, whereby every interaction was filtered through the lens of perceived status. And status—whether bestowed by one’s title, office size, or number of subordinates—mattered. When you took the time to look and listen before exposing yourself in a meeting or at the nearly empty coffee pot in the break room, you were better able to navigate the complex social maze of cubicles. This applied to the go-getters as much as the coasters. I fell into the latter category.

Pseudo-voyeur, coaster, technically single young woman with a slight case of ennui and an undersized sense of ambition, this was me circa 1996. And it only mildly troubled me. After all, the vast majority of the world’s population led quiet, not particularly remarkable lives. Odds were, I would never be a Publisher’s Clearing House sweepstakes winner, but it was just as unlikely that I would be struck by lightning.

What I hadn’t counted on was the kung-fu kick of coincidence. The chance encounter. That notorious butterfly effect that sets in motion a series of actions and reactions that make complacency a joke. Or at the very least, irrelevant.

Regardless, at that time, as long as I had a reliable paycheck that afforded me a comfortable home and the ability to take a nice vacation once a year, I found little to complain about, and even less to strive toward.

A million thoughts, but only one right thing to do.

Eighteen-year-old Serenity Ashdown has a brilliant mind: she counts, calculates, and analyzes everything, even when she doesn’t want to. Her memory is also far beyond photographic, surpassing her physicist father’s abilities. But her world was otherwise normal right up until dimension-hopping enemies forced her into a parallel reality. The feds she meets on the other side claim to want to help her go home. All she has to do is use her memory to reconstruct the right sequence of codes. But it’s soon clear they want something more: a gateway for invasion, because this version of Earth is dying.

Serenity can’t risk returning home with a deadly force behind her, but the feds aren’t about to let her escape. Then she learns that the “other Serenity,” her alter-ego in this dimension, was a resistance leader recently betrayed and killed. She has a chance to assume her alter-ego’s identity and use her unique ability to lead the resistance in their fight against the tyrannical super-government that is poised to invade her universe. Serenity has no idea how to be someone she’s not, but she has to try—or she may not even have a home to return to.

Review:

“Readers will enjoy following Serenity as she learns to become a leader . . . in this dystopian thriller showcasing a strong young woman in STEM.” –Kirkus Reviews

All it takes is one spark to start a blaze.

At Foxham Prep, a posh private school for the children of DC’s elite, a single rumor has the power to ruin a life.

Nobody knows that better than Bryn. She used to have it all—the perfect boyfriend, a bright future in politics, and even popularity, thanks to her best friend, cheer captain Cora. Then one mistake sparked a scandal that burned it all to the ground.

Now it’s the start of a new school year and the spotlight has shifted: It’s geeky Georgie, newly hot after a summer makeover, whose name is on everyone’s lips. When a rumor ignites, Georgie rockets up the school’s social hierarchy, pitting her and Cora against each other. It grants her Foxham stardom . . . but it also makes her a target.

As the rumors grow and morph, blazing like wildfire through the school’s social media, all three girls’ lives begin to unravel. But one person close to the drama has the power to stop the gossip in its tracks. The question is—do they even want to?

From Dhonielle Clayton and Sona Charaipotra, authors of the Tiny Pretty Things duology (now a Netflix series), comes the edge-of-your-seat social thriller everyone will be talking about.

Perfect for fans of TWILIGHT, SUPERNATURAL, RIVERDALE, and Cassandra Clare.

Chloe is well aware that she’s ordinary. So, when bad-boy Tyler starts talking to her, she’s convinced he must have an ulterior motive. What she doesn’t suspect is that he’s actually a demon escaped from Hell to live out his college-age dreams of going to concerts and playing in a punk metal band. And that he actually likes her. Soon, swoons and romantic dates replace Chloe’s trepidation.

But as Chloe and her new friend Alicia are dragged deeper in Tyler’s world, they realize that many less-friendly demons roam the Earth too. And one of them is murdering girls—girls who look a lot like Chloe.

With the help of Tyler and a contingent of angels, Chloe and Alicia take the paranormal investigation into their own hands. Because if they don’t find out which demon is murdering girls soon, Chloe will be next.

REVIEW: Set mostly the mall between a smoothie stall at the food court and Hot Topic, this YA paranormal tale is fast paced and action packed. Chloe is an awkward, shy type who somehow attracts the attention of the elusive Tyler who never talks to anyone. The dark, silent type takes an interest in Chloe, but it seems he is hiding something, or omitting the truth. Chloe has always had her best friend Brian over the years, but things go awry when she tries to introduce the two boys at a bowling date. Angel and demon lore, a few scenes at the boardwalk and plenty of insecurity to overcome makes this an interesting read. My only drawbacks were the repetitive references to Tyler’s hair and the gore. Plenty of plot twists and turns! Content and trigger warnings: “F” word, attempted sexual assault, heavy violence, vomiting, LGTBQ relationships.

Four Weeks of Scandal by Megan Frampton

Four Weeks of Scandal

Hazards of Dukes #5

by Megan Frampton

ebook, 384 pages

Expected publication: June 28th 2022

by Avon Books

Goodreads * Amazon (ad)

If you love the sparkle of Tessa Dare and the wit of Sarah MacLean, then you won’t want to miss this newest historical romance by Megan Frampton, who returns with a delicious story about a will in dispute, a four-week bargain, and a pretend engagement with romantic consequences.

It only takes one moment to cause a scandal…and four weeks to live it down!

Week one: Lovely, lively Octavia Holton arrives in the village, determined to claim her inheritance–the home she grew up in with her late father. Surely he meant for his daughter to have the property, and owning it means she could fix it up, sell it, and use the money to pay off her debts. But when she arrives, she discovers the house is also claimed–by one Gabriel Fallon.

Week two: Gabriel claims his father won the property in a bet, but he can’t bring himself to toss Octavia out on her very delightful derriére, so he makes her a four-week bargain: Together they’ll pretend to be engaged, all the while seeking out any will, letter, or document that proves who gets the ownership.

Weeks three and four: But that means togetherness…a lot of togetherness, and long days–and evenings–in each other’s company. The pair seems destined to “duke it out,” staking their claims…but it’s all too soon that they realize their rivalry might lead to something much more intimate. And suddenly four weeks seems like a long time. And yet not enough.

Review

I’ve read all the other books in this series, so was happy to see Octavia’s story as the latest installment. She’s Ivy’s sister from book one and has taken over the gaming den her older sister started in London. Both girls were forced to start over on their own after their father wagered Ivy in a gambling bet. Octavia has taken over more of the responsibility now that her sister is married, and she’s showed up to their childhood home in hopes to find something of worth to pay of their creditors. She fully expects to take over the home now that her father is dead, but there’s someone there…in the pond. Such a fun start to the book and a memorable introduction to Gabriel. The two strike up a deal which turns into a fake engagement, rather ironic, since they could have indeed been married had Octavia’s sister lost her bet many years ago.

Gabriel is a kindhearted scholar who will do just about anything for anyone. Octavia a headstrong, impulsive and sometimes selfish woman who has moments of personal growth. Overall, they felt a bit mismatched in commitment and the sacrifices they are willing to make along the way. Gabriel’s actions also do not match his character, he comes across as two completely different people at times during their physical relationship. I was more endeared to him than to Octavia, who I liked in the previous books of the series. It was so fun to see Sebastian make a re-appearance in this, book 5. Perfect dialogue between him and Gabriel. I do wish we could see more of how things go between the two main characters after the end and epilogue since they have just barely expressed their mutual feelings to one another. Such a good series, read them all! Thanks to Avon Books and Netgalley for the advanced reading copy for review. All opinions are my own.
