SCIENTISTS FROM THE FAR FUTURE KIDNAPPED HER.
THREW HER INTO A HORRIFIC EXPERIMENT.
SHE REFUSED TO DIE.
Elaine, a modern-day woman, is abducted by elite Historical Anthropologists of
the far-distant future. Spirited forward through time to their university
laboratory, she is locked into a vast, empty, gray habitat built for the study
of “primitive” humans.
Elaine awakens in this appalling place, alone, naked, and terrified. She has no
idea that a hidden audience of university students is studying her every move.
Forced to create food, clothing, and shelter using nothing but her ingenuity
and her bare hands, she fights a constant battle to maintain her sanity.
Desperately lonely, Elaine searches for other people. After a journey across
the featureless gray landscape, she locates two fellow captives: Marc, who
might be her soulmate; and Adam, a brilliant but troubled fifteen-year-old.
Together, they form a precarious yet vibrant and supportive community of three.
But now Elaine is about to lose it all. The Historical Anthropologist in charge
of the experiment, Professor Mirri Daaha, is methodically destroying Elaine’s
carefully constructed world to study how her “primitive” test subjects will
react to escalating threats to their existence. Elaine must confront the
Professor and ultimately bring herself, Marc, and Adam safely home.
“GRAYLAND has left a big impression in my mind and heart. It’s truly
an original, fascinating, and inspiring piece of work.” —Alan Rinzler,
former Associate Editor of Rolling Stone Magazine
“So vibrant and full of life. This made me believe in the power of
creativity to overcome the impossible.”—Susan Whiting Kemp, author of “The
Climate Machine”

The Genesis of
The Architect of Grayland
It all started in the middle of the night. Tossing and turning in bed, sleepless. Night after night of spinning thoughts and making mental lists of what I needed to do the next day, until I tried a new self-calming technique: telling myself stories. Letting stories come. Letting them develop as they may. Not worrying if they were silly, or soap operas, or that they didn’t make sense.
The stories I told myself at first were nothing special: one involved a teacher with an unruly class; another was a homesteading family at the turn of the century; I remember telling myself a story about a youngster hiding out in a forest. But they weren’t special. They were just stories. They didn’t draw me in. They didn’t seem real to me.
Not until I invented a young woman named Elaine. Right from the beginning, she was in a mysteriously empty place devoid of anything and everything. Gray, all around her. Gray, as far as she could see. Nothing but gray.
It caught my attention. What was this place? Why was Elaine there?
I laid in bed in a dark room, my husband asleep beside me, and felt like I was in this place with Elaine. Night after night, I went to this barren place that I soon called “Grayland”, and sometimes I became Elaine. I was her, and with her, I figured out how to survive in this empty place.
Weeks of story-telling nights went by as I spent time with my creations. Elaine and I, in the middle of the night, made water, shelter, food. We realized, in order to stay sane, we had to make things from the Gray (and in order to fall asleep!) Together, Elaine and I built a life in Grayland… and eventually I realized that Elaine needed a novel. Mr. Gray needed to come alive. I started writing, and writing, and writing. Professor Mirri came later. Marc and Adam came later.
It all started with Elaine, and it ended with Elaine.
And yes, Grayland helped me to sleep.
