About the Book

Glimmers-2240Glimmers by Barbara Brooke

A simple touch and suddenly, Paige is in the past — living someone else’s life, seeing the world through her eyes, and feeling her deepest emotions.

Paige used to think memories existed only in one’s mind. But now, she knows better. She can’t explain how or why, but she has “glimmers”: special moments that have remained behind — clinging to a letter, a ring, even a worn-out pair of boots.

When Paige returns from each glimmer, a small part of her has changed. Who is this gourmet cook, fashion designer, feisty lover? And how is she supposed to explain this to her family without them thinking she has completely lost her mind?

Paige believes her new talent is a gift, until she’s transported into her sister’s memory and catches a glimmer of her secret life.

Take this humorous and romantic journey as Paige learns about true love through the lives of three extraordinary women.

Excerpt

The smoldering fireplace illuminates the cozy library, and it is here my family retires after dinner. I find a place on the sofa and listen to crackling whispers from the hearth. Papa relieves the shelf of his newest book and then sits casually in his favorite chair. It is quite common for our family to spend evenings in such a way. Most nights, my father will entertain us by reading a few chapters, and I become carried away by his voice. Where shall we travel tonight?

A tray lined with sweet biscuits sits beside me. Although I am tempted, I am able to ignore them and reach for my parchment instead. After showing Mary my latest drawings, I am anxious to design a new gown for her. I sketch my ideas as I wait for Papa to begin his tale. I sigh with contentment beholden in the knowledge that Mr. Andrew has some business to which he must attend. I will not have to endure his unnerving presence for the remainder of the evening.

My father’s animated story begins with faraway kingdoms, and I am immediately swept away. He is reading from the fifth page when an unwelcome interruption edges into the room. Without looking up from my drawing, I feel his presence. Although he has entered the room, Mr. Andrew has failed to dissolve the web of Papa’s story weaving, and for that I am grateful. It does not take long for Mr. Andrew to take his place by my side. My body involuntarily edges away from him, and I am pressed against the sofa’s arm. I instinctively reach for a biscuit and nibble at it. My concentration is locked on my sketches, but I can sense Mr. Andrew’s gaze fall upon me.

“Miss Emma, you seem to be out of sorts. Are you ill?” he whispers in my direction.
“I am fine.”

“Your drawings are quite nice. I did not realize you were an artist.” He peers over my shoulder, and my hand slaps atop my drawing in a most protective manner.

My free hand eagerly searches for a proper dessert. This time it is a raspberry tart, and juice from its berries sweetens my lips. I am lost for a moment in its splendor. In fact, I am barely aware that Mr. Andrew is even here, sitting beside me with his arm brushing against mine.

“That will be all for now. I must retire to my quarters,” says Papa as he marks his page and shuts the book. I am utterly disappointed by the abrupt halt to his reading and am quite certain I will not be able to rest my mind until I know the fate of the mighty heroine.

When the room clears, and I find I am left alone, I cautiously approach the closed book. With cautious fingertips, I open it to the saved page and read what is to come. After flipping a few more pages, I am relieved to find the heroine will prevail through her hardships. The book rests still on top of Papa’s side table just as it had been only moments before. Feeling quite satisfied, I pivot to leave. To my utter dismay, I am not alone. Mr. Andrew is still here, resting against the doorframe.
