After her
desert-transforming wish, Emel follows Saalim to Madinat Almulihi to reclaim
all she has lost. But the seaside city is not what she expected. When she is
tasked with assisting the palace healer, she is faced daily with the reminder
that Saalim―focused only on seeking the revenge of those who killed his
family―does not remember her at all.
Cursing the
magic that destroyed her love and brought her to an unwelcoming city, Emel
regrets her decision to leave her settlement. That is, until she meets Kas.
Though inscrutable, he is the first person to help her forget her past, and the
pull of finding happiness with him tempts her from the life she wished for with
Saalim.
But darkness
waits in the desert, and not all people in Madinat Almulihi are what they seem.
When Emel understands she is entangled in the fate of the city―and of
Saalim―she is faced with the realization that magic may be the most powerful
card in her hand. It might be the only way to save all that she loves, but if
she plays her hand wrong, it could destroy everything.

Title: Godmersham Park: A Novel of the Austen Family Author: Gill Hornby Genre: Historical Fiction, Biographical Historical Fiction, Austenesque Publisher: Pegasus Books (November 1, 2022) Length: 416 pages Format: Hardcover, eBook, & audiobook ISBN: 978-1639362585
BOOK DESCRIPTION A richly imagined novel inspired by the true story of Anne Sharp, a governess who became very close with Jane Austen and her family by the #1 International bestselling-author of Miss Austen. On January 21, 1804, Anne Sharpe arrives at Godmersham Park in Kent to take up the position of governess. At thirty-one years old, she has no previous experience of either teaching or fine country houses. Her mother has died, and she has nowhere else to go. Anne is left with no choice. For her new charge—twelve-year-old Fanny Austen—Anne’s arrival is all novelty and excitement. The governess role is a uniquely awkward one. Anne is neither one of the servants, nor one of the family, and to balance a position between the “upstairs” and “downstairs” members of the household is a diplomatic chess game. One wrong move may result in instant dismissal. Anne knows that she must never let down her guard. When Mr. Edward Austen’s family comes to stay, Anne forms an immediate attachment to Jane. They write plays together and enjoy long discussions. However, in the process, Anne reveals herself as not merely pretty, charming, and competent; she is clever too. Even her sleepy, complacent, mistress can hardly fail to notice. Meanwhile Jane’s brother, Henry, begins to take an unusually strong interest in the lovely young governess. And from now on, Anne’s days at Godmersham Park are numbered.

Academy of Magical Creatures has outstanding world building and imaginative characters. I wish as readers we had a bit of the backstory going into book one.It does feel like you’re dropped right into the middle of a story line. Once I got going I was swept into the fantastical places and scenes of Lia and Sophia’s life. One is a fire elemental, the other a water worker, both at an academy for others with elemental magic.
This series has themes similar to Hunger Games or Divergent with a native, indigenous twist. The biggest drawback for me was some of the content. The writing is fantastic and I loved what the authors built as far as an escape from realty into a magical realm. Truly unique!
A fierce werewolf consumed by his
past. A human used as bait. A connection neither expects.
A MONSTER
TO EVERYONE BUT HER …
Hans lives only for vengeance. No more Pack. No friends. Only the dark void
inside him tormenting him about his past. Yet when he meets a dark-haired
beauty, desire tears through him and changes everything. But werewolves never
take mates, and to claim her would doom him and ensure the rising evil wins.
AN ORDINARY HUMAN TO EVERYONE BUT HIM …
One moment Briony’s eating in the tavern, and the next a necromancer has her
tied up in a cave as bait for a werewolf. Stuck in the middle of a centuries
old battle, she needs to escape. Now. Except when the werewolf arrives and she
gets her chance, she doesn’t run. No—she helps him and decides to join him to
face a formidable enemy who will do anything to kill her. And with each day
that passes, every gentle touch, every silky purr, the werewolf claws his way
further into her heart.
BOUND TOGETHER AGAINST AN ANCIENT EVIL …
They have one month to work together to take down a sorceress. One month to
decide to remain together forever. Everyone in Briony’s life has left her, and
she doesn’t believe in love anymore. Secrets in Hans’s past prevent him from
making Briony his. They may save the world, but will they save each other?

Note: The hero of the story is a walk-on-two-legs mythological kind of
werewolf. He is not a human man who shifts into a wolf. The book cover
accurately depicts what the hero looks like. He is in this form the entire
book. If you like a little monster in your man—this book is perfect for you. If
you enjoy sweeping fantasy with a happy ever after—this book is for you.

Based on the True Story of the Free-Spirited Daughter of Queen Victoria
Princess Louise’s life is upended after her father’s untimely death. Captive to the queen’s overwhelming mourning, Louise is forbidden to leave her mother’s tight circle of control and is eventually relegated to the position of personal secretary to her mother―the same position each of her sisters held until they were married.
Already an accomplished painter, Louise risks the queen’s wrath by exploring the art of sculpting, an activity viewed as unbefitting a woman. When Louise involves herself in the day’s political matters, including championing the career of a female doctor and communicating with suffragettes, the queen lays down the law to stop her and devotes her full energy to finding an acceptable match for her defiant daughter.
Louise is considered the most beautiful and talented daughter of Queen Victoria but finding a match for the princess is no easy feat. Protocols are broken, and Louise exerts her own will as she tries to find an open-minded husband who will support her free spirit. In the Shadow of a Queen is the story of a battle of wills between two women: a daughter determined to forge her own life beyond the shadow of her mother, and a queen resolved to keep the Crown’s reputation unsullied no matter the cost.
“Peek into the House of Hanover and view the strength of two women: Queen Victoria and her daughter Princess Louise. This story weaves compassion and conflict into breathtaking and gripping historical detail.”— Julie Wright, author ofA Captain for Caroline Gray
“Moore crafts an intriguing portrait of the independently minded Princess Louise and her tensions with the English royal family. Moore sets the stage with meticulous research, and she expertly combines fact with fiction, with psychological insights on Victoria’s mercurial moods and the impact of her controlling nature. It adds up to a worthy portrait of a woman divided by duty and self-determination.”— Publishers Weekly
5 STARS – “I always enjoy Heather Moore’s historical novels. This one did not disappoint! She is impeccable with her research and always does an excellent job of bringing people from the past to life.”— Julia Daines, bestselling author of Haven Cross, and Whitney Award Finalist
About the Author
Heather B. Moore is a USA Today best-selling and award-winning author of more than seventy publications, including The Paper Daughters of Chinatown. She has lived on both the East and West Coasts of the United States, as well as Hawaii, and attended school abroad at the Cairo American Collage in Egypt and the Anglican School of Jerusalem in Israel. She loves to learn about history and is passionate about historical research.
Heather B. Moore is an extremely thorough historical fiction writer. In the Shadow of the Queen explores the every day life of the household of Queen Victoria, especially the life of her daughter Louise. It is a slow moving deep dive into what the children of the King and Queen experienced after the King’s untimely death. The health struggles, the mourning, the responsibilities and the courtships leading to marriage. If you are a Royal follower or history buff, this gives an accurate, well researched peek into ten years of Louise’s life.
Louise is unique in that she fights for women’s suffrage, wants to be a sculptor and entertains a commoner as a prospective spouse. Readers will see the moods of Queen Victoria as well as the trials of hemophelia and added responsibilities for Victoria’s children. Perfect for an autumn submersive experience in England.
Content: clean, some kissing, death of a loved one.
I received an advanced review copy from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Press, via AustenProse PR. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Perfect read for Fall. Curl up with a spiced cider and immerse yourself in the clean tales of three couples falling in love.
The Plucky Miss Ruth– Cousins Ruth and Nettie take a daily stroll and happen to run into Lord Lambert, an acquaintance from London. Ruth finds herself questioning everything she once believed about the man. Drawn together they are in a plot to disrupt the continuum of a fixed loop of time and get Nettie back with her lost love. Slow moving, gently paced love story for fans of historical fiction with a twist of science.
Mr. Dowling’s Remedy– Beverly and Mr. Dowling find themselves patients in an insane asylum. True to the times, this is a stark glimpse into the reality of early misunderstandings in the medical and mental health field and the inhumane treatment of early asylum patients. Reading the inner working of both main characters minds was interesting, and I’m glad the story has touches of hope in a stark environment.
A Railway Through the Roses– Lady Baxter’s paradise is her garden and Adrian Everard is out to destroy her peace and her land. He must build a pathway through her land to help the countryside flourish and he must marry an heiress soon. Adrian tests her patience, but avoidance doesn’t always work out!
I received an advanced copy of An Autumn Kiss and I wrote an honest review.
BOOK DESCRIPTION
An Autumn Kiss is the seventh book in the Timeless Victorian Collection, a bestselling anthology series from Mirror Press. The book features three novellas from acclaimed historical romance authors whose stories reveal if one kiss will change the lives of the three heroines. “The Plucky Miss Ruth,” by Laura Rollins
Miss Ruth Hughes is certain she’s caught in a time loop—every day she wakes to find it exactly as the one before. A thrilling prospect to be sure. If the many books she reads on time travel has taught her anything, it is that to break free she must complete an all-important task. For Ruth the task is straightforward: reunite a couple, once desperately in love but forced apart by society. Unfortunately, things are not always as easy as they first appear. Struggling, Ruth opens up to the handsome Lord Lambert and he readily agrees to help. With autumn on the brink of turning into winter, time is running out for Ruth to help the ones who need her most. And, with a bit of luck, perhaps she can even find a little time for her own happily ever after. “Mr. Dowling’s Remedy,” by Annette Lyon
Crandall Dowling’s aspirations of becoming a physician collapse when he develops symptoms that land him in an asylum. He’s been at Sherville Retreat long enough for autumn leaves to appear when Beverly Stanton arrives. She’s held under the dubious diagnosis of “hysteria” but seems perfectly sane, unlike Crandall, though his verbal and physical tics don’t seem to scare or even bother her. Beverly and Crandall develop a friendship fueled by an undeniable attraction that under other circumstances could become more. But in an asylum, one cannot plan a future, let alone one of love or marriage. Then tragedy strikes, testing staff and patients beyond anyone’s training. When the dust settles, Beverly’s diagnosis may be reversed, but if she leaves, what will become of her? What of Crandall? And what of their autumn-born love? “A Railway Through the Roses,” by Lisa H. Catmull
Mr. Adrian Everard has tried everything to keep his father’s factory open, but a single solution remains. Marry an heiress before Christmas to fund the desperately needed railway. The local landowner, Lady Anne Baxter, will not agree to sell her garden—or her heart. Indeed, his childhood friend is determined to sabotage all his efforts to find a wife. As the deadline for Adrian to choose a bride draws close, one thing becomes painfully obvious. Saving the factory will mean losing the woman he loves forever.
