For eight years, Saffron Savage has been stuck on a dilapidated zoo-planet on the outskirts of the galaxy. Her mountains of overdue student loans make it impossible to afford the cost of leaving, and her sleazy coworkers force her to work demoralizing jobs on a daily basis. Desperate to escape, she hatches a scheme that might just be crazy enough to work: steal the zoo’s rare, two-headed llama and sell it to the highest bidder.

When the poorly planned theft lands Saffron and her stolen companion as unwitting stowaways on an outbound ship, she must pose as an animal rights activist on a mission to return the animal to its home planet. To her surprise, the ride comes with some perks – an instant chemistry with Captain Michael Reyes and burgeoning friendships with the ship’s motley, animal-loving crew. Other than the lie that’s snowballing out of control, Saffron finds herself settling into this quirky, ship-bound life.

If only the buyer wasn’t the most notorious, cut-throat mob boss in the galaxy. Or there wasn’t a warrant out for her arrest.

The Galactic Zookeeper’s Guide to Heists and Husbandry is a fast-paced space romp about second chances, rediscovering purpose, and finding family in unexpected places.

Excerpt

I wheel into action, a plan springing to mind that very instant. “Ah. You know,” I say to the person behind me in line. “I think my llama needs to use the restroom. Excuse me.”

I try to smile politely, but it turns out a little too much like a grimace. The woman eagerly scootches over to one side.

“Yoo-hoo,” she calls. As if my talking to her were the only invitation needed to open the floodgates of her curiosity. “Isn’t that a umemeh?”

She asked the question so loudly I believe the entire bloody station has heard it.

I force a chuckle. It’s been a while since I’ve laughed casually, so it sounds demented. “No, lady. Of course not! That species is endangered. This right here is a llama with a genetic defect. Two heads. Poor thing was unwanted by his mother,” the lady’s face wears an expression of doubt, so I press my point home with forced lightness in my voice. “No umemeh’s today. Sorry to disappoint.”

I tug the umemeh along more forcefully towards the garbage bay, which is adjacent to the port entrance. I already smell terrible. Hiding out in literal garbage shouldn’t be a problem, right? At least, until the heat is gone.

There’s a security officer posted in front of the large rolling garage door that opens to the dump. Why the voids would they post a security guard by the garbage? Is there that much stolen crap flying through the Horse’s Ass?

Well, actually. Yeah. That makes sense.

The security officer stares at my animal for a long time, chewing thoughtfully.

Please just let me through, I pray. Please just let me through.

“That an umemeh?” He finally asks.

“Ah. Nope! Just a llama.” I wait, but the guy hasn’t moved a muscle. “…A llama that needs to take a piss.”

“How can you tell?”

“Well, he’s been my seeing-guide-llama for the last eight years,” I say, making it up as I go along. Between the sunglasses and hoodie and the grey scarf wrapped around my neck, my lie may actually be passable.

Except that if an umemeh were a guidance animal, their owner would have died a thousand times by now. Also, I’m pretty sure pretending to be blind is a new low for me. “I can always tell when he has to take a piss,” I add lamely.

“Not that! I meant the llama part. Don’t umemeh’s have two heads?”

“Well, I had them engineer a second head onto this one to help with the seeing stuff,” I retort.

I can’t help but cast a glance at the police activity around the Cricket. One of the officers by the ship is staring directly at us, scratching his head. Shitshitshit.

I turn to the garbage-bay bouncer with fire in my veins. “Look, mister—”

“That’s officer!” He interrupts with a kind-hearted smile. “My name’s Officer Dan.”

“Okay, look, Officer Dan.” I put my hands on my hips. “Llamas can hold their piss for three days. But when they’ve got to go, they’ve got to go. So, if you could just let me through?”

He still appears skeptical. And he should, because it’s all total bullshit. I mean, umemeh’s can hold their piss for three days, but llamas? They piss every three to six hours.

“Look,” I add. “You can follow me in and keep asking about… Fred here. But if we stand out here any longer, one of us is going to be mopping llama urine off a half-mile of space terminal.”

Diana Gendarme has spent her life doing for others, so when she moves into her dream cottage, she’s ready for some “me” time. But the cottage is shabby and her new neighbors quite close. One of them makes a din in his blacksmith’s forge all day long yet has the nerve to complain about her beagle’s yodeling. He’s the last sort of man who should attract Diana. So why can’t she resist the absurd dares he persists in issuing?

Reg Coltsfoot doesn’t plan on falling for his neighbor. A lifelong charmer, he’s used to women falling for him instead. There’s just something about Diana that has him longing to draw her out of her staid life and into his. Maybe it’s the magic of spring, but Reg will do all he can to persuade Diana she needs his laughter and his love to light her days.

Excerpt:

He had assumed a wide, protective stance and he looked absolutely nothing like the image of Mr. Coltsfoot lodged in Diana’s head. In fact, this could not be Mr. Coltsfoot. He did not appear old enough. A caregiver, perhaps. Or Mr. Coltsfoot’s son.

He had a bared head of thick, dark hair tumbling in an unruly fashion over his brow, and a face suffused with outrage. He wore a white shirt unbuttoned at the neck and a pair of tan slacks, and he made Diana suck in a breath as if someone had struck her in the gut.

“I’m sorry, is that your pet?” she called, seeing the creature nestled comfortably in his arms. She didn’t know if he heard her over Amundsen’s baying, which continued unabated.

He snarled in response. Diana could take it for nothing but a snarl. He tossed back his head and shouted, “I hope your dog is not going to be a problem.”

Diana did not appreciate being shouted at, though she supposed under the circumstances he had no other option.

He’s not my dog. The words trembled on her lips but she did not speak them. To all intents and purposes, Amundsen had become her responsibility.

He’d been Dad’s dog, a loyal if ofttimes trouble-making companion. He could decimate an unsecured kitchen garbage pail in mere seconds. He could open a refrigerator door and select whatever appealed to him. He could chew up and destroy anything not made of cast iron.

They say that legends are born, not made.

But for Jeremy Goodson and Masaru Hagen that is far from the truth. Confronted by something that neither of them can explain, two complete strangers from opposite sides of the world embark on an unforgettable journey that will forge them into living legends.

It has been almost 4,000 years since magic disappeared from the Earth. Hidden from humanity by the Veil, those who possess magic live in ancient settlements across the globe. Over the centuries, these beings have pierced the Veil, leaving behind glimpses and shadows of the fantastic and arcane. Fueled by distant memories and humanity’s desire for wonder, familiar stories of myths and legends have been passed down for thousands of years in nearly every culture and nation.

Jeremy Goodson, an average, overweight teacher in New York City finds his entire world turned upside down when a stranger tempts him to leave everything behind and start a journey that will test Jeremy’s mysterious gift and bring magic and hope back to humanity.

Masaru Hagen, the adopted son of American tech entrepreneurs living in Tokyo, has been guided by an unseen voice all his life. On the eve of his twentieth birthday, the voice leads him across thousands of miles, on a mysterious and perilous mission he alone can undertake.

But there are principalities of this world that will do whatever they can to stop Jeremy and Masaru and keep magic out of the hands of humanity forever.

One of these men will bring hope to the world; the other will bring death. The world they once knew will be changed forever, not only for themselves, but for everyone on Earth…and maybe not for the best.

No one cares that you cured cancer if you also cloned a horde of dinosaurs and let them rampage down the street.

Supergenius and quasi-villain Rex normally can’t go a week without accidentally endangering Decimen City with her science shenanigans. It’s been two weeks since her genetically engineered dinosaurs rampaged through town―a good streak for her―but the peace is broken when actual villain Last Dance sets his sights on Decimen. And he wants Rex’s help. Before Rex can say “I didn’t do it,” superheroes who’ve dragged her to jail on her worst days are crowding her lab to conscript her into quasi-herodom.

Rex would rather stay out of it and deal with the dinosaurs that keep calling her Mom, but she can’t ignore that she was somewhat responsible for Last Dance’s villainy. She’d kept a very disorganized lab. And he was such a nosy brother. She failed to help him back then, but maybe if she stops him now―and keeps the heroes fooled―she can finally set things right.

Reviews:

“VERDICT: Zinging one-liners, familiar superhero tropes with hilarious twists, and defying the world’s expectations to be your authentic self combine to make this an appealing tale for older teens and adults.” —Library Journal, Starred Review

“Raney’s smart, silly, and surprisingly heartfelt debut . . . is thoroughly entertaining and utterly delightful.” —Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

About Brenna Raney:

Brenna began her writing career with Amelia Bedelia fanfiction on hand-stapled printer paper. Her early original work was entrusted to gel pens and floppy disks, then ballpoint and flash drives, and briefly, receipt paper from her first job. In her Academic Period, she produced dry and esoteric works for which she was awarded a master’s degree. She has also dabbled in visual media, and her minimalist comic, Ice Cream Money from Grandma, hangs proudly on her grandmother’s refrigerator. To Win Her Hand by Jen Geigle Johnson Tour

Genre: Historical Romance, Regency Romance, Inspirational Fiction

Publisher: King’s Row Press

Publication date: December 15, 2022

Length: 272 pages

Format: Hardcover, Trade Paperback, & eBook

About the Book

An expert at winning a woman’s hand. A woman who cannot be won.

Lord Featherstone has the world on his shoulders. Or at least his world. With two brothers and a failing estate he must make funds somehow. But what happens when he falls for a woman? Will his tactics work when the situation is so close and personal?

Everyone thinks Lady Loveluck is a wealthy widow. What they don’t know is that she is on the brink of hiring herself out as a Governess in order to pay for her next meal. The only thing keeping her from employment is a growing reputation as a matchmaker. As long as she never falls for another man, as long as she doesn’t allow herself to be fooled into marrying, she will be just fine.

But she never counted on being caught up in the beguiling tactics of London’s renowned and not so secret matchmaker for men.

About the Author

Jen Geigle Johnson is an award-winning author, including the GOLD in Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards and LDSPMA Praiseworthy’s top award for Romance,

Jen has more stories circulating in her brain than can possibly be told. She discovered her passion for England while kayaking on the Thames near London as a young teenager. History is her main jam. Her literary heroes include the greats: Jane Austen and Charles Dickens. But she has modern sensibilities as well.

Six children and an inspiring husband keep her going and make certain she doesn’t stay glued to a keyboard or lost in obscure fascinating details of old castles.

Now, she loves to share bits of history that might otherwise be forgotten. Whether in Regency England, the French Revolution, or Colonial America, her romance novels are much like life is supposed to be: full of adventure.

Advance Praise

  • “I loved the character growth, watching them learn more about the other’s heart and hardships, and the realization that perhaps they had more choices than they first thought. Such a sweet regency. I’m so grateful I had the chance to read this one.”— Makayla Branson, Reading Past Bedtime
  • “The house party, the quiet moments, the collection of other characters, and much more all combined together made this is delightful read.”— Julie Carpenter, Goodreads
  • “Two matchmakers with a wager. What fun for all! [A] heart touching story.”— Shauna Jones, Goodreads

Review

The first thing that struck me about this book was the design. I love the photo on cover and the patterned pages to start each chapter. I’m a fan of Regency matchmaker stories so “To Win Her Hand” offered two interesting characters, Lady Lovelock, a widow female matchmaker and Lord Featherstone, a male of the same profession. They make a wager to keep from falling into financial ruin, and let the games begin. I adored the relationship between these two and the way he woos her in subtle but steady ways. I wish we would have seen more depth from the side characters as at times it felt like I was watching a play rather than diving into their lives and thoughts. Overall, it is a light historical read with older characters who are waiting their turn at love and second chances. It’s a refreshing twist on the mundane routine of the ton dull of flirty banter and slow, clean romance. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author.  Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the THE SACRED MEANING OF EVERYDAY WORK by Robert H Tribken Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Check out my post and make sure to enter the giveaway!

About The Book:

Title: THE SACRED MEANING OF EVERYDAY WORK

Author: Robert H Tribken

Pub. Date: January 31, 2023

Publisher: Faith and Enterprise Press

Formats: Paperback

Pages: 272

Find it: GoodreadsAmazon

(An earlier version was published in 2021as Sacred Rhythm: A Christian Spirituality for Our 21st Century Work Lives by Robert Tribken.)

It’s time to engage problems and opportunities with a new sense of purpose.

Work can sometimes feel like a pressure cooker, with painful levels of stress, interpersonal conflict, and the risk of burnout. We can lose track of our goals and maybe even feel as though our work is pointless and going nowhere.

Developing a deeper sense of purpose will help us overcome these problems and perhaps even flourish in our work lives.

Many of us have a deep, intuitive desire to connect with something deeper than ourselves; for many, this means a deeper awareness of God and the divine mystery as we go through the week. And we have a closely related desire to contribute to the greater good and the well-being of other people through our work.

These powerful desires can profoundly affect our work lives if we let them guide us to our deeper purpose.

The Sacred Meaning of Everyday Work will help you find this new sense of purpose and deal with your challenges and opportunities with wisdom, strength, and courage.

The author offers practical insights from multiple sources, including the Bible, contemporary research, and experience in business. He invites you to consider these in light of your own faith or spirituality and your own work experience.

This book will help you:

  • Find deeper purpose and meaning in your work and see its spiritual connection.
  • Cultivate the character strengths like courage, integrity, and compassion you need to lead in a time of uncertainty.
  • Overcome work-related problems like stress, burnout, and interpersonal conflict.
  • Adopt short spiritual practices that help you relax, turn your attention toward God, and focus on the work at hand with new energy.
  • Understand how your work contributes to the greater good and the well-being of other people.
  • See how the values you bring to your work can encourage the teamwork essential for success.
  • Learn what the Bible actually says about your work’s positive value and its contribution to human flourishing.

Your work is important for yourself, your family, your coworkers, and society as a whole. Finding its sacred meaning will help you work with a new sense of purpose.

About Robert H Tribken:

Rob Tribken has been in business for over four decades and is the founder of several businesses. Along the way, he has had to deal with many of the most difficult issues people face in their work lives.

Over the years, Tribken became interested in the connection between faith, spirituality, and work. Several decades spent working in business combined with several years studying theology and becoming acquainted with organized Christianity convinced him that there is a great need to find better ways for churches to minister to people in the vocational aspects of their lives. He launched the Center for Faith and Enterprise to meet this need and help people experience a new sense of purpose, fulfillment, and effectiveness in their work lives.

Tribken’s educational background helps him explore the connections between faith, spirituality, and work. He earned an MBA from The Harvard Business School and an MA in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary. Tribken is pursuing a Doctor of Ministry in Faith, Work, Economics, and Vocation at Fuller. He has also spent considerable time researching positive organizational psychology and has incorporated findings in his writings.

Tribken has led retreats, taught classes, led groups engaged in contemplative practices, and spoken on the subjects of spiritual practices, connecting faith and work, business as a calling, and the role of business in ending poverty. In addition to his work with the CFE, he has been involved with several other non-profit organizations dealing with the connection between faith and work. In past years, he has served as a volunteer Chairman of the Board of Partners Worldwide, a board member of the Max DePree Center for Leadership, and an advisor to entrepreneurs.

MANDATE THIRTEEN by Joseph J. Dowling Tour

10 Feb, 2023 by in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Fire and Ice is happy to be hosting a spot on the MANDATE THIRTEEN by Joseph J. Dowling Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Check out my post and make sure to enter the giveaway!

About The Book:

Title: MANDATE THIRTEEN

Author: Joseph J. Dowling

Pub. Date: January 10, 2023

Publisher: Manta Press, Ltd.

Formats:  Paperback, eBook

Find it: Goodreadshttps://books2read.com/MANDATE-THIRTEEN

In a world with dwindling birth rates, all young women must submit to compulsory fertility checks at the age of thirteen. For those able to conceive, a docile existence inside the Birthing Schools beckons—far worse if they fall into the wrong hands.

When the clandestine Baby Farmers, and their brutal leader Miko, arrive to snatch his daughter, Michael must make a split-second choice: risk his own freedom to protect hers… or lose her forever. Mandate Thirteen is a gritty dystopian thriller for fans of Children of Men, A Handmaid’s Tale, and The Running Man.

“An action-packed, cross-country adventure between father and daughter as they dodge authorities, reconnect with old acquaintances, and meet new people (good, bad, and crazy), forging connections at every stop. I loved every aspect of their journey and how they learned so much about themselves on the way. This is dystopian in every way that matters. A worthy addition to any library.” Preye, Literary Darlings

About Joseph J. Dowling:

Joseph always knew he would write seriously one day. That moment arrived in 2020, when his thriving hospitality business was temporarily shuttered. With time on his hands, he quickly fell into an obsession and became a keen student of the craft.

Since finding the passion, Joseph can’t imagine life without stories rattling around his head. Eager to make up for lost time, he’s been fairly prolific, and his short stories have appeared in several anthologies and literary magazines. Even better, his rejections are getting nicer by the week.

Joseph lives in London with his wife and their Scotty dog. Mandate: THIRTEEN will be his first published novel. Scroll to the bottom of the page on his website to sign up for his newsletter!

Author: Drēma Drudge

Briscoe Chambers is not only the manager of her country music star husband, but a graduate student trying to complete her Virginia Woolf thesis by fall – the same time her cheating husband, Michael, has an album due to avoid being in breach of contract. No problem, right?

Except his co-writer will be Velvet Wickens, his idol who has been opening shows for him. And who happens to be the one he’s cheating with. Now Briscoe has been asked by their record label to ensure the album gets finished on time. To accomplish this, they must all live together for the duration of the writing of the album.

And by the way, Briscoe knows.

Fans of the writing of both Taylor Jenkins Reid and Virginia Woolf will enjoy this novel that has plenty of sweet tea, country music, Virginia Woolf, and heartache.

Reviews:

Southern-Fried Woolf is an uproariously funny, deeply insightful, and engagingly complex novel on many levels.” – Rick Neumayer, author of Journeyman and Hotwalker

“A celebration of how books and music can help one transcend life’s daily trials, Southern-Fried Woolf is a quick-witted and erudite novel, drenched in a love of literature and music.” Self-Publishing Review

“Drema Drudge has taken a typical novel outline and made it into an even more exciting and unique story. From Briscoe’s thesis being woven into each chapter to being a part of every thought and emotion she has, the story captivates the audience from start to finish.”- Literary Titans

“Drudge pitches us into Nashville’s vivid world, full of fascinating characters and expertly depicted settings. You can almost taste the sweet barbecue beans and hunks of honeyed cornbread.”- Maggie Humm, author of prize-winning novels Talland House and Radical Woman: Gwen John & Rodin

“A cleverly plotted, character-led novel combining country music and Virginia Woolf. Now there´s a mix!”- A ‘Wishing Shelf’ Book Review
