REVIEW: A fun anthology by various authors, readers learn about students of the Once Upon Academy. The Princess and the Pea, the Pied Piper and Grim Reaper are amongst the characters who make an appearance. I enjoyed the short stories because each one has a unique perspective and tone. Some are short, others longer, but each includes magic and powers. If you enjoy YA and fairy tales, you won’t be disappointed. Content warning: swearing, moderate violence, nudity.

About the Authors:

Breezy Jones

Breezy lives in a small town in Florida with her husband, daughter, son and four furbabies, as a SAHM. If you ask what first got her into writing, she’ll tell you it was over the ending of Divergent. She remembers laughing at the first person to suggest that she could write a book, but chose to give it a shot.

When she’s not writing Breezy splits her time among her many hobbies; reading, repainting dolls, makeup and graphic design, just to name a few. These things don’t come without a cost; coffee and wine. While writing hasn’t always been her goal, she has fallen in love with building a world from nothing and watching it flourish.

Iridescent by S. H. Everly

(Iridescent #1)

by S. H. Everly

Independently published February 23, 2021

488 pages

For 17-year-old Katrina Peterson, life is never the same after she finds out she’s moving back to California. Upon arrival, Katrina learns that the town has secrets, and at the heart of them is the mysterious and popular Jared, who’s been dreaming about her long before she came to Santa Cruz. Only one thing seems to have all the answers: a map given to her by her mother. But Katrina wonders how long she can keep her own secret from Jared. Will he ever accept her for who she truly is? But, more importantly, can she? A story filled with friendship, family, love, and even faith, Iridescent will take you away to the beaches and ocean waters of Central California, and on a magical journey in this coming of age book.

Review

I chose Iridescent primarily because of the setting. Monterey Bay, Santa Cruz and the surrounding coastline are some of our very favorite spots in the world. The author does a good job of describing the kelp forests and wide variety of sea life in her book. Katrina, her aunt and her best friend work at the aquarium, main character Kat wants to be a marine biologist. There’s also discussion of the redwood forests an the light houses which help add to the authentic and unique Central California mood. It’s a long book, but I was able to get through it in a day. It has a bit of a Twilight vibe in the “love triangle” and I found myself pulling for the underdog rather than the main interest Jared. What I loved? The family dynamics which highlighted foster, adoptive and traditional families. All functional. I struggled with suspension of disbelief with Katrina continuing to enter into situations which were dangerous and harmful. One of the main themes is forgiveness, yet the main character does not set healthy boundaries for herself and puts her life in danger by going on sleepovers and trips with someone who has tried to hurt her. I suppose she is growing and learning as a teen, but even after she learns the gravity of the threat she still continues to associate with two main characters. One can forgive but set a firm boundary.

I loved the Christian themes interwoven through the book and the relationship to faith & deity the characters possess. Overall, a clean read, appropriate for younger teens. Thanks to Prism Book Tours for the complimentary copy as part of their review tour.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Agatha Christie meets Jane Austenin this atmospheric Regency tale brimming with mystery, intrigue, and romance.

When Miss Rebecca Lane returns to her home village after a few years away, her brother begs for a favor: go to nearby Swanford Abbey and deliver his manuscript to an author staying there who could help him get published. Feeling responsible for her brother’s desperate state, she reluctantly agrees.

The medieval monastery turned grand hotel is rumored to be haunted. Once there, Rebecca begins noticing strange things, including a figure in a hooded black gown gliding silently through the abbey’s cloisters. For all its renovations and veneer of luxury, the ancient foundations seem to echo with whispers of the past–including her own. For there she encounters Sir Frederick—magistrate, widower, and former neighbor—who long ago broke her heart.

When the famous author is found murdered in the abbey, Sir Frederick begins questioning staff and guests and quickly discovers that several people held grudges against the man, including Miss Lane and her brother. Haunted by a painful betrayal in his past, Sir Frederick searches for answers but is torn between his growing feelings for Rebecca and his pursuit of the truth. For Miss Lane is clearly hiding something…

ADVANCE PRAISE

“A brilliant Agatha Christie-esque whodunit by reader favorite Julie Klassen. Set in the creepy atmosphere of an old abbey, Shadows of Swanford Abbey will keep you guessing until the very end. There’s plenty of danger, intrigue, and—yes—romance to delight Regency-era lovers of all ages. Truly a don’t-miss read!”—Michelle Griep, Christy Award-winning author of Once Upon a Dickens Christmas

“If you enjoy historical fiction with equal blends MYSTERY (suspense) and ROMANCE, then I recommend Shadows of Swanford Abbey with you wholeheartedly without any reservations. This may just be my FAVORITE Klassen novel yet.”—Becky Laney, Becky’s Book Reviews

“Once again Julie Klassen has delivered an intriguing book with all kinds of mystery and a few ghosts added in made it all worth the midnight oil I burned because I didn’t want to put it down!”—Lori Parrish, Red Headed Book Lady

Review

With an atmospheric setting, Shadows of Swanford Abbey takes the reader through local lore, ghost sightings and the scene of a murder. Rebecca Lane has returned to her childhood home to help her brother, a recluse writer who has turned on himself. She stays the local abbey turned hotel, where she encounters her girlhood crush, now a man and a widow. The two of them must navigate how they’ve changed over the years while caught in the clutches of a mystery.

The writing was engaging enough that I finished in one day. The pacing was a little slow and too detailed for me when they were interviewing each suspect and individual guest, hotel worker. That was the only lull. It has a Clue like vibe and a bit of a Bronte feel. Overall, I found this to be a well-written Christian Historical romance. Fans of Jane Austen will enjoy the sweet, slow romance and the happily ever after.

Content: opium abuse, unfaithful spouse, attempted assault, mild violence, mention of murder.

Havenlight Art Tour

06 Nov, 2021 by in Uncategorized Leave a comment

I first saw Jenedy Paige’s painting “Coming Full Circle” in the temple. As this year has passed it has come to represent revelation for me. What it means to feel and recognize the presence of whisperings from heaven and angels. To feel the love of the Lord deep in our hearts and to receive answers for me personally. It is a beautiful rendering of peace and power poured out from on high. Thank you Havenlight Art and Jenedy Paige for this masterpiece.

Jenedy Paige Bio:

I am a realist in every sense of the word. I paint things as they exist, in the representational tradition, but also in the concepts behind my work. I am a truth teller. I love the classical approach to painting and its ability to so easily invite the viewer in. However, I also know the value abstraction, and the power it has to express things that realism cannot, and so I try to include both in my paintings. There is nothing I love more than a delicate and detailed figure on an expressive background.

My paintings begin in a journal. I record my frustrations, sorrows, joys, ambitions, hopes and then I transform those words into images. I guess you could say I very literally draw from life experience. I try to be as honest as I can in the telling, I don’t mince words. I then release the story to the canvas, and as I paint I am enabled to process the experience in a new way and to learn from it. I’m not fast, I take my time with the painting, and the lesson in it. Layer by layer I work, carefully revealing the wisdom inside.

When it comes to creating images I believe that simplicity is key. The more concise you can say something, the more powerful it is. So although my writing is usually lengthy, I look for symbols I can use, and try to condense my thoughts into a concise visual statement. I strive to find a shortcut right to the heart of the viewer, something that will strike them at first glance.

When I have taken the painting as far as I can, I return to writing. And just when I think I have dissected a particular idea, when I have learned all I could, writing usually takes it one step further. Words then become the final layer to the piece. The work and the text are then offered up together to others. I then find my experiences are not all that original, as the work strikes a familiar cord in the viewer. People often place themselves inside my work, and add their story to mine, and thus my heart and the heart of my audience connect over the canvas.

Welcome to Sandy Point, Oregon: a sleepy beach town that’s home to a giant anchor statue, a sometimes-karaoke-bar, and Frosty’s questionably legendary Sunday Sundae Surprise. A town Jo, Autumn, and Bianca thought they’d left far behind when they graduated high school, finally moving on to greener pastures than the midway point for tourists heading to the Goonies house. But life seldom goes according to plan.

Bianca Boria-Birdy, former prom queen and valedictorian, has always been an overachiever. As she juggles managing the family tattoo parlor, caring for her grandmother, and adjusting to a new marriage, Bianca’s schedule becomes stricter than ever, with no room for disruption. What she really needs is a vacation, but not even Bianca Boria-Birdy can achieve the impossible.

Autumn Kelly used to be an actress. Now she teaches drama at Sandy Point High. She may have had to kiss her movie-star dreams goodbye, but molding the next generation of performers has given her life meaning in a whole new way. Until the sudden reappearance of her ex-best friend throws everything off-balance.

Jo Freeman has it all together. With a cool job in Silicon Valley, connections at the trendiest fitness studios, and a down payment on her dream condo, she’s well on her way to reaching every one of her goals before thirty. Or she was, before she got fired and landed right back home with her parents and teenage sister.

When Jo finds an old bucket list in her childhood bedroom, it sets the three women on a path that brings them closer to one another with each task. And it just might lead to a life none of them could have planned.

Praise for The Throwback List
“Witty and fiercely relatable. Lily Anderson writes about what it’s like to realize you’re totally failing at this adulting thing and how it makes you turn to that one, special, friend who always knew you best. A fun, funny, and surprisingly emotional look at  how friendship evolves but always endures.”—Sarah Watson, author of Most Likely and creator of The Bold Type

A REBEL IN AUSCHWITZ by Jack Fairweather Tour and Giveaway

11 Oct, 2021 by in Uncategorized Leave a comment

Fire and Ice is today’s stop on the A REBEL IN AUSCHWITZ by Jack Fairweather Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Check out my post and make sure to enter the giveaway!

About the Book:

Title: A REBEL IN AUSCHWITZ: The True Story of the Resistance Hero who Fought the Nazis from Inside the Camp

Author: Jack Fairweather

Pub. Date: October 19, 2021

Publisher:  Scholastic Focus

Formats: Hardcover, eBook, Audiobook

Pages: 352

Find it: GoodreadsAmazon, Audible, B&N, iBooks (audiobook), Kobo (audiobook), TBD, Bookshop.org

With exclusive access to previously hidden diaries, family and camp survivor accounts, and recently declassified files, critically acclaimed and award-winning journalist Jack Fairweather brilliantly portrays the remarkable man who volunteered to face the unknown in the name of truth and country. This extraordinary and eye-opening account of the Holocaust invites us all to bear witness.

Occupied Warsaw, Summer 1940:

Witold Pilecki, a Polish underground operative, accepted a mission to uncover the fate of thousands interned at a new concentration camp, report on Nazi crimes, raise a secret army, and stage an uprising. The name of the camp — Auschwitz.

Over the next two and half years, and under the cruellest of conditions, Pilecki’s underground sabotaged facilities, assassinated Nazi officers, and gathered evidence of terrifying abuse and mass murder. But as he pieced together the horrifying Nazi plans to exterminate Europe’s Jews, Pilecki realized he would have to risk his men, his life, and his family to warn the West before all was lost. To do so meant attempting the impossible — but first he would have to escape from Auschwitz itself…

Praise for The Volunteer (adult edition):

“This is a story that has long deserved a robust, faithful telling, and [Fairweather] has delivered it.” — Wall Street Journal

“An extraordinary story.” — The Times

* “A forceful narrative with unstoppable reading momentum, Fairweather has created an insightful biography of a covert war hero and an extraordinary contribution to the history of the Holocaust.” — Booklist, starred review

“Witold Pilecki is one of the great — perhaps the greatest — unsung heroes of the second world war… Jack Fairweather’s meticulous and insightful book is likely to be the definitive version of this extraordinary life.” — Economist

Review: What a timely piece by Jack Fairweather and Scholastic Press. Never has it been more important than today to study the history of the Holocaust and the extreme views which led up to Auschwitz. The author highlights a covert, undercover war hero who works from the inside to take down the Nazi regime. Full of historic photos, maps and rich information, this is a book that could be used in a classroom to tell a relatively unknown story about a man who risk everything. It highlights Poland and the Soviet involvement as well, which adds layers to the backstory. Overall, though the content is hard to digest, it is necessary to learn. Thank you for the advanced copy along with a chance to herald an unsung hero Pilecki.

About Jack Fairweather:

Jack Fairweather is a former war reporter in Iraq and Afghanistan and the author of A War of Choice and The Good War. The adult edition that tells this story is titled The Volunteer: The True Story of the Resistance Hero Who Infiltrated Auschwitz, which was named winner of the Costa Award and a #1 Sunday Times bestseller. Jack has served as the Daily Telegraph’s Baghdad bureau chief, and as a video journalist for the Washington Post in Afghanistan. His war coverage has won a British Press Award and an Overseas Press Club award citation.

Three novellas, three times the romance, and three times the love . . . in this brand new Timeless Regency Collection

The Seventh Star Inn, by Sally Britton

After years of looking after one another, Susan Baxter and her mother view their neighbors in Totnes as family. When a new landlord inherits the leases on their homes and businesses alike, Susan dreads knowing her world could change at the whim of a stranger. But when she meets Collin Stonecroft and his inquisitive daughter, her feelings shift quickly from cautionary to hopeful. Collin has lived in the confines of London boarding houses all his life, and he’s determined to give his daughter more. They check into the Seventh Star Inn with plans to return to London as soon as possible, but both find Miss Baxter and her local history lessons far too enchanting to leave behind. When Susan learns of Collin’s proposed changes to her beloved neighborhood, will she be able to help him see that some things are perfect the way they are?

The Truth about Mr. Blackmore, by Annette Lyon

Leigh’s life at the Old Grey Inn is drudgery broken by flights of fancy thanks in part to novels by Simon Blackmore. When Mattias McGrady comes to the inn for a fortnight, Leigh captures his attention. A relationship develops, and she dreads the end of his stay, which will mean a return to an unhappy life. An urgent letter to Mattias leads to him inviting Leigh to an event that stands to change both of their lives forever. If all goes well, Leigh will have a life of her choosing after all. But half-truths and lies have a way of complicating matters. When their plans go awry, Leigh loses her reputation and Mattias almost surely loses his career. Can either of them find happiness?

The Coachman’s Choice, by Deborah M. Hathaway

Ever-reliable Mary Thorne has helped her widowed mother run The Golden Mermaid Inn for years. She spends her days greeting guests, ensuring the inn runs smoothly—and dodging flirtatious remarks from passing coachmen. But she’s far too busy to pay any attention to such men, even the enticingly attractive Mr. Northcott. Known far and wide for his horsemanship, punctuality, and dallying reputation, Robert Northcott relishes his life as a coachman, especially his freedom to flirt with numerous women from inn to inn, all without the messy details of commitment. There’s just one woman who’s immune to his charms: the lovely, single landlady of The Golden Mermaid. Robert is determined to win Mary over, just as heartily as she is determined to keep her distance from him. But his carefree life is threatened when his pursual of Mary becomes more than just a game…

REVIEW

The Inns of Devonshire anthology is a collection of happily ever afters about strong and loving women. Each story was well written, even as a short story. Past the years of regular courtship according to society, the “spinsters” make their own way to a beautiful ending. The readers get a snippet of three different authors. It’s a welcome diversion. Clean, historical and moving. Loved!

A historical novel, set in postwar New York City.

In 1946, Eva leaves behind the rubble of Berlin for the streets of New York City, stepping from the fiery aftermath of one war into another, far colder one, where power is more important than principles, and lies are more plentiful than the truth. Eva holds the key to a deadly secret: Project Bluebird — a horrific experiment of the concentration camps, capable of tipping the balance of world power. Both the Americans and the Soviets want Bluebird, and it is something that neither should ever be allowed to possess.

But Eva hasn’t come to America for secrets or power. She hasn’t even come for a new life. She has come to America for one thing: justice. And the Nazi that has escaped its net.

Wow, I’m not really sure what to think knowing that Project Bluebird was real and the U.S. Government was cooperating with Nazis after World War II. This historical fiction novel by Sharon Cameron takes the reader through the inside of a fractured mind and wartime atrocities. It’s definitely an older teen, if not, adult read. Eva has come to New York with her childhood friend Brigit to start over after Nazi Germany is occupied and the war is won. The find solace in a home with other orphans and refugees. The dividing lines in America are different, but they exist. Written in two points of view that eventually converge, Bluebird has a high level of suspense and psychological intrigue. I personally struggled with the trauma both main female characters experienced. Nazi and post war Germany was not a kind place. The author uses historically accurate places and details to fill in the story line. I learned a lot and thought the societal parallels to some of what we are experiencing today were interesting. This could be used as a history read for college students.

Thank you Scholastic Press for an advanced reading copy which I received for the tour.

Content and trigger warnings: child abuse, rape, moderate violence, racism, violence, war crimes, PTSD.

What a fun book! Carla and Franco are both cut throat when it comes to business, both are interested in keeping their family businesses afloat. Carla’s father, Carlo Falco has suffered a heart attack, but can’t seem to back off and let her take the lead as CEO. Her solution…strike up a contract with him which includes her getting married and settling down. She’s found the groom, but things take a turn when she realizes this may not be just a marriage of convenience after all. Groom Franco is ever attentive, but both he and Carla come from an old family feud. The Marchello and Falco families can not trust each other or move past their grievances. Will Romeo and Juliet be able to mend the rift in business and marriage?

I loved every minute of Falling for Her Convenient Groom. It’s a quick read–the perfect length, that leaves you wanting to read the rest of the series. I do recommend starting with book one since the characters are family and make cameos in this installment. Set in a dreamy Italian lake town with sweeping villas and rich flavors, this is a wonderful escape. Franco is dead set against marriage and family from scars of his childhood, but what a gentleman! He is the gem of the story. Not to miss! Thanks to the author for the complimentary copy for the tour.

Content and trigger warnings: alcoholism, gambling, absent parents, heart disease, off page scene, mention of consummating a marriage.

Three Springs, Texas is the perfect place to start a new series. The pace is slow, the characters mostly octogenarians seeking to make a match in others and there’s a strong sense of community. A town so small gossip travels like wildfire and the local gardening club meetings soak up the whole population. Abby is coming to make a new start in her little red convertible and stylish clothes, when she hits a pot hole on the side road and has to be taken into town on horseback by cowboy Wes. It’s a fun start to two reluctant adults meeting one another int he middle of nowhere. Abby needs a fresh start since being jilted by her ex- boyfriend, so she heads to her cousins in the town where their grandparents had roots. I loved the mentions of family history and the rich folklore which surrounds Three Springs. It has a deep history full of treasure and strong willed occupants. The general store renovation works perfectly for anyone who’s been to an old Western town. There’s always an old general store, not to mention wooden plant sidewalks.

My only wish was the Wes and Abby would have speed outside their internal dialogue and interacted a bit more honestly with one another. The readers know the thoughts of both main characters inside and out, but it’s not until the ending chapters anything plays out. Slow paced, clean romance with an old Wild, West town which has settled into a place where community wraps around its occupants to hep them have a better life. If you want a book with endearing townsfolk who look out for heartwarming, western, clean romance, toureach other, look no further!

Content and trigger warning: cheating, alcohol consumption, unwed pregnancy, widowhood and absent family members.

I received a free copy fo the tour and all opinions are my own.
