Fire and Ice is happy to announce we are today’s stop on the Huber Hill and The Dead Man’s Treasure blog tour! We have an exclusive interview below with author B. K. Bostick and several giveaways to go along with the tour. Here’s a little about the book…

Huber Hill and the Dead Man’s Treasure
by B.K. Bostick
Paperback, 256 pages
Expected publication: October 28th 2011
by Bonneville Books
ISBN 1599559110
When his grandfather dies, Huber Hill is devastated—until he opens Grandpa Nick’s mysterious box. An old gold coin and directions to a hidden Spanish treasure send him and his friends off on an mind-blowing adventure, but he’s not the only one on the hunt. Filled with dangerous animals and cryptic puzzles, this book will have you on the edge of your seat until the last page

Author Interview: Tell us a little book about your book and what inspired it. My own grandpa definitely inspired the story. He would always share tales about Spanish treasure hidden up in the mountains nearby where we lived. I always imagined going on these wild adventures to find treasure. As I grew older, I realized that the real treasures were the stories my grandpa told me. I’ll always remember those days sitting at his side listening as he showed old maps, books, and artifacts. If there’s one theme to the story, it’s that relationships with friends and family are invaluable- of much more worth than any kind of money.

Where is it set? And what kind of research went into it? The story takes place in the mountain community of Carbondale, Colorado. The stories about Spanish gold in the Rockies are mostly folktales and oral histories. I read a couple of books in particular on the subject- Footprints in the Wilderness and Lost Gold of the Uintahs both by Gale Rhoades.

As a child and an adult what were your favorite books? As a child, I loved the Goosebumps series, but my all time favorite was RedWall by Brian Jacques. As an adult, I’ve grown nerdier- I love history books. My favorite for now is Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin.

Who is your personal hero? I truly admire Lincoln. His tenacity, wit, and resilience are inspiring to me.

Any new works in progress? Right now I’m working on Huber Hill and the Brotherhood of Coronado (Oct. 2012). This is the follow up to Dead Man’s Treasure and will take place in Spain.

What has been the most rewarding part about being an author so far? There have been a few kids who have read the book so far and hearing that they enjoyed it makes all of it worthwhile.

Which fictional character do you most Identify with? I see a bit of myself in Huber in terms of the relationship he had with his Grandpa and becoming best friends with someone he never expected.

About the Author:
B.K. Bostick, author of Dead Man’s Treasure, resides among the magnificent Rocky Mountains. In addition to writing, he has spent his career in education. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Utah and his Masters in Psychology from Utah State University. He has worked as a teacher, after school program coordinator, junior high school counselor, and most recently as a teacher mentor for a University. He loves spending time with his lovely wife and two dogs. In his spare time, he enjoys eating cheetos and watching old episodes of the Twilight Zone.

The Fundraiser: Alyssa, my neighbor, was diagnosed with a Meningioma brain tumor on December 5th, 2010. The only way to get it out was through surgery. It took four surgeries to get out as much of the tumor as they could and now she’s almost finished with her radiation treatments. Alyssa is an inspiration to me. Her positive outlook and attitude while facing something so terrible is truly remarkable. Because of the inspiration she’s given me, I am trying to give back. I will be donating 100% of profits from all pre orders of Huber Hill and the Dead Man’s Treasure along with sales during the first two weeks of launch (Oct. 1-16) to Alyssa and her family. You’ve seen them in bakeries, you’ve tasted their sugary sweetness, and now you can make your very own gourmet cake bites, cake balls, and cake pops right in your kitchen! Cute and creative, cake bites are the perfect way to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays, and holidays. And starting from a cake mix makes these recipes so easy you can make any day a special occasion!

I’ve had the opportunity to sample three different varieties of Wendy’s cake bites fresh from her own making and let me tell you they are a little bit of heaven. They look like a truffle but inside lies a surprise mix of cupcake and icing. When I got her newest cookbook int he mail the first thing I noticed was the spiral binding which makes it easy to keep the book on the page you need to reference while cooking. The other thing I LOVE are the photos! The photographer, Marielle Hayes has done an amazing job capturing the cupcakey creations with colorful backgrounds and sharp images. I get a lot of books that come through my mailbox, but when this one arrived it was an instant favorite. My children usually have no interest in much that they see but with visually stimulating and yummy looking treats they are begging me to bake. We can’t wait to try the Spring Flowers cake bite pops.

Wendy’s broken the cookbook into four sections: fruity and fabulous, the sweetness of chocolate, holiday treats, and the icing in the little bites. With recipes for delicacies like Key Lime Pie, dark chocolate truffle, southern red velvet and root beer float bites you can’t help but feel your mouth water. If you’re a fan of cupcakes you simply must try Wendy’s bites! Learn more about the 101 Gourmet Cake Bites here.

Book Review-My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend

4 stars

Unlucky-in-love Jesse finds herself thrown back into the dating game when she meets Ethan —a cute, struggling writer who seems perfect for her. Things get complicated fast, though, when only moments later she meets Troy—a confident, successful advertising exec who seems…just plain perfect. But everyone is keeping a secret, and Jesse soon learns that things aren’t always what they seem. My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend is a classic love story turned upside down, a romantic comedy that blends warm sincerity with fresh storytelling…and some big surprises.

If you’ve never read a book by Elodia Strain today is the day to go out and buy one. She is by far my favorite writer in the romantic comedy genre. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend because it was written based off of a movie that was released a year ago that I’ve never seen or heard of. But I picked it up knowing that I love Elodia’s sassy, hilarious writing. And then when curiosity got the best of me after I finished the book I had to rent the movie to compare notes.

I adore the changes Elodia made and the new characters she added to the written version. She made the story enough her own with a hilarious protagonist Jesse who tends to find herself in awkward situations. Recovering from a divorce, Jesse is not quite ready to throw herself back out there in the game of love-but with a little extra push from her coffee shop co-workers and her uncle she decides to take a few risks. Then within 24 hours, not one, but two eligible and swoon worthy men walk into her work and begin to vie for her attention.

Ethan, the starving writer and Troy the rich successful executive couldn’t be more different. Funny thing is that in the book I found myself rooting for one and in the movie the other…each have qualities that will attract both Jesse and readers. You’ll laugh out loud and be very surprised at the big twist in the end. I actually had to read the last chapter through twice just to make sure I’d read it right! I would highly recommend My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend as a squeaky clean and hilarious romance for all readers. It addresses honesty, trust, taking a chance on love and following your dreams. Well done once again Elodia!

About the Author: Originally from California, Elodia Strain has lived everywhere from Alaska to Washington to Pennsylvania, where My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend is set. She currently makes her home near Dallas, Texas, where she loves playing with her adorable nieces and nephews, swimming, and enjoying good Tex-Mex.

Elodia is also the author of The Icing on the Cake, for which she was named Best New Fiction Author by Cedar Fort, and Previously Engaged, which was a 2009 Whitney Award Finalist.

(dis)Abilities and the Gospel is a resource that may be read, reread, and used many times. . . . The authors have beautifully woven the frustrations that so many people have experienced into an action-living plan to help children with special needs. —Lloyd Kinnison, PhD. Texas Woman’s University, Special Education Department

This book is an unexpected and very welcome gift to the community of churches and their leaders. It addresses so many of the problems that children, young adults, and adults with disabilities face in church activities. —Brenda Winegar, Early Interventionist/Cofounder, Kids on the Move

My Review: There could not be a better time for me to be reading this book. Six years ago our first child was diagnosed with special needs, a year later her brother was diagnosed with Asperger’s, and this year our youngest child was diagnosed with autism. As a mother with experience in sensory processing, mood disorders, speech delays and ADD… I applaud both of the authors! They know what they are talking about. Their words are heart felt and well researched; their methods have been tried in the home and in the classroom.

(dis)Abilities and the Gospel is a must read for leaders, teachers and parents. Our experience would have been much different had this book been around years ago as our children had their first experiences outside the home and in the classroom. (dis)Abilities and the Gospel insightfully weaves every day techniques such as chunking, PEC’s and rewarding positive behaviors into a language all can understand and apply. It will quite frankly be a life saver for each person who picks it up looking for answers.

About the Authors: I had the pleasure of meeting both Danyelle and Lynn at the Storymakers conference a couple of months ago. They each took time out on more than one occasion to help me through some of my own questions about individualized education plans and resources in my state. I can guarantee that 20 minutes spent with Danyelle if you win the giveaway would be well worth it! Fire and Ice gives five stars and a huge thank you to the authors for writing such an inspired book.

Author Interview with Karey L White

We’re excited to have author Karey L White in an exclusive interview today talking about her new release…

Gifted
Paperback, 224 pages
Published February 8th 2011
by Cedar Fort, Inc.
ISBN 1599554747

Susan and Brent Weller have been waiting for years for a baby of their own. But as Anna grows, her unique gifts become more apparent, and the choices she makes while trying to help others could threaten her family’s happy, comfortable life. With a strong message about family and having hope for the future, Gifted is sure to change your outlook on life.

Tell us a little about Gifted

Gifted is the story of a couple who adopt a baby girl and discover as she grows that she has some unusual gifts or qualities about her. Those gifts are wonderful, but as Anna grows, the gifts present unexpected challenges. A central part of the story is the relationship between Anna and her best friend, Kelsey. Kelsey comes from a broken and abusive home. They forge a friendship that is more like family. The thing I love about Gifted is that I think it illustrates how important love is and how our lives can be a source of light for those around us.

Where did the idea for the book come from?
We had a neighbor whose pregnant grand-daughter was killed in a car accident. Although she died, they were able to save the baby and this elderly couple had to find her a home. I went to bed one night thinking of them and what they were going through and I had a dream about the baby. In the dream, she had these wonderful, almost magical gifts. I couldn’t stop thinking about what would happen if a baby really had these gifts. That’s what led to the story of Anna. In fact, in the book Anna’s mother, Susan has a dream about her daughter. It’s the same dream I had.

What advice would you give to beginning writers on the road to trying to get published?
Love your characters. I love the characters in Gifted. As I wrote the story, I felt their frustrations, their pains, their triumphs. I cared so much about them and their story that I wanted others to know them. As corny as that sounds, I think when you love the characters and they feel real to you, you want to do right by them.

Do you have any writing rituals or snacks?
I usually write when it’s quiet and I rarely eat while I’m writing. But after I’ve put in a few hours, I like to reward myself with a delicious baked treat. Or marzipan.

What books have most inspired you?
I’m going to limit this answer to fiction because there are lots of non-fiction books that have inspired me. But I love fiction that makes me think and teaches me something. I was inspired by everything written by Bess Streeter Aldrich. A Lantern in Her Hand, A White Bird Flying, and Spring Came on Forever are my favorites. And East of Eden by John Steinbeck completely changed the way I look at people. I think that’s the sign of really great fiction.

Any projects in the works currently?
I’m working on a romance called For What It’s Worth.

What have been some of the most rewarding parts of the journey so far?It has been a thrill to see some of the reviews from people who loved Anna and Kelsey. And talk about a rush–walking into a store and seeing my book on the shelf still takes my breath away. It’s definitely a dream come true.

4 stars
Synposis: After their father’s disappearance, Cinder leaves home for a servant job at the castle. But it isn’t long before her sister Ella is brought to the castle herself—the most dangerous place in all the kingdom for both her and Cinder. Cinder and Ella is a Cinderella story like no other and one you’ll never forget.
I’ll have to be honest, normally I am not a sucker for fairy tales or re-tellings of princess stories. However, Cinder and Ella kept me interested. In this version, Cinder and Ella are sisters in a family of six. Their father has disappeared since a mysterious visit from the Prince who plants seeds of discontent and darkness in the home, and their mother is a shadow of a woman who spends her days at the spinning wheel–isolated and mostly mute.

The sisters are left to fend for themselves, Cinder taking a motherly codependent role, Ella strong and silent. Ella’s identity gets somehow merged into Cinder’s and the two become simply known simply as Cinderella. Their mother forgets Ella all together and turns entirely to Cinder to care for her remaining two daughters, a vain self-centered one and a spoiled young child whiteout proper attention.

As Cinder and Ella grow weary of their daily routine, Cinder turns to the palace where she retains a job as a servant and Ella runs away. Soon Cinder is swept up into the beguiling trap of the sinister Prince and praise of the court, and eventually Ella is found, captured and brought to the castle.

Cinder must learn to discern good from evil. Ella must uncover the secret that awaits in the Prince’s secret chamber. Melissa Lemon uses the legend of the trees, a twisted fairy tale and a knight in shining armor to spin a completely new take on an age old story. While some of the characters seemed a bit undeveloped and the ending was abrupt I must say I enjoyed Cinder and Ella much more than anything else I’ve read recently. I think it would be suited for middle grade readers ages 12 and up as the content is clean. There is one small swear word and only vague references to ungentlemanly behavior by some of the antagonists. I’ll be curious to hear what moral other readers pull from this story. And, I can’t help but to wonder where the Prince is lurking…will he be back?

Thanks so much to Cedar Fort and NetGalley for the early peek plus the thoughtful discussion questions at the end of the book.

The Misadventures of Phillip Isaac Pennby Donna L. Peterson
Reading level: Ages 9-12
Paperback: 96 pages
Published June 8, 2011
by Cedar Fort
ISBN-10: 1599558939
3.5 stars

Source: NetGalley
Pip, whose real name is Phillip Isaac Penn, feels that the world is against him as he struggles to deal with angry parents, a bossy older sister, a frazzled teacher, and memorable characters such as Bully Bart, Cheater Chaz, Know-It-All Nell, Liar Lizzy, Stealer Steffan, Conman Cody, and Tattle-Tale Tess. Every day of the week brings another challenge that Pip handles in his own endearing way. Yet, no matter how hard he tries, he realizes that it’s just not easy being a kid.

Poor PIP just can not catch a break in life! Author Donna Peterson describes his antics in a chapter for each day of the week. Every morning he wakes up with someone calling his name and as the hours go by he winds up in all kinds of trouble with his teachers, classmates and at home. This enchanting read for first graders and up addresses cheating, bullying and respect for other people’s property. It shows how adults need to take the time to actually figure out what is going on before jumping to conclusions. Told in formulaic, predictable chapters it’s a short book at 96 pages that is recommended for all. Overall a fun summer choice for a middle grade early reader. It’s a great one to read aloud because of the repetition and beautiful illustrations. Thumbs up from Fire and Ice!

About the author: Donna Peterson has enjoyed writing stories and poetry since the second grade. She has been published four times in the Idaho Magazine; wrote a weekly humor column, “Kaleidoscope,” for the Three Rivers Chronicle; and she continues to write short stories for the children at Park Intermediate School, where she has been employed for the past twelve years. Two years ago, Donna took a children’s literature class, which inspired her to finally publish her own stories.

Donna lives in Weiser, Idaho, with her husband, Brad, and her three-legged cat, Sam. Her son, Erik and his lovely wife, Shawna, live in Murray, Utah. Her other son, David, will be attending college in Japan next fall. Learn more about the author and her book at the Facebook Fan Page
