Synopsis from Goodreads: Sydelle Mirabil is living proof that, with a single drop of rain, a life can be changed forever. Tucked away in the farthest reaches of the kingdom, her dusty village has suffered under the weight of a strangely persistent drought. That is, of course, until a wizard wanders into town and brings the rain with him.

In return for this gift, Wayland North is offered any reward he desires—and no one is more surprised than Sydelle when, without any explanation, he chooses her. Taken from her home, Sydelle hardly needs encouragement to find reasons to dislike North. He drinks too much and bathes too little, and if that isn’t enough to drive her to madness, North rarely even uses the magic he takes such pride in possessing. Yet, it’s not long before she realizes there’s something strange about the wizard, who is as fiercely protective of her as he is secretive about a curse that turns his limbs a sinister shade of black and leaves him breathless with agony. Unfortunately, there is never a chance for her to seek answers.

Along with the strangely powerful quakes and storms that trace their path across the kingdom, other wizards begin to take an inexplicable interest in her as well, resulting in a series of deadly duels. Against a backdrop of war and uncertainty, Sydelle is faced with the growing awareness that these events aren’t as random as she had believed—that no curse, not even that of Wayland North, is quite as terrible as the one she herself may carry.

I received the ARC of this book from Egmont USA and could not wait to read it, up to the top of my to be read pile it leapt. What an outstanding first novel by Alex Bracken.! Here’s what I love…it is appropriate for ages 12 and up and captivating enough for all ages. It was absolutely refreshing to find a YA novel with no swearing, no sex and no adult content.
Fans of Shannon Hale will eat up Bracken’s vivid landscapes and character descriptions. Brightly Woven is a captivating journey of one beautiful red haired girl worshipped as a goddess and her rough around the edges wizard. They escape duels, foes seeking power, natural disasters and overcome all in search of true love and the cure for a curse. Sydelle is strong and sweet rolled into one. North is one who will stay with you long after you close the book. Four stars and a congratulations to Alexandra Bracken for a breathtaking debut fairytale fantasy!

Today’s featured photographer is Girl and Typewriter!
“I am a crafter and university student in Richmond, Virginia. I mostly make cards and stationery, decorating them with watercolor illustrations, quilled paper objects or hand embroidery. I also like to find small things on the ground and use them in collages and other creations. I’ve always loved photography, and felt especially inspired to photograph everything and everyone during the six months I lived in Santiago, Chile. I’ve recently rediscovered these negatives and am selling hand-developed photos from my time in Chile, donating the profits to the current earthquake relief efforts there. Please consider supporting this initiative!”

I lived in Chile for 6 months, and all the places I went and all the people I met there are so much a part of who I am now. All of the profits from these prints will go towards a charity fund for the earthquake relief efforts there. They say Chile Relief Print in the title so you know. I have listed six so far, and may post more soon. Prints do not come with frames or mats; they do come packaged with love and care.

This picture measures approximately 5″ by 7″ and was printed on professional Ilford paper. It shows a dog I met one day while exploring the neighborhood of Bellavista, Santiago

Because I have been doing this!
20 food kits and 50 hygiene kits for the victims of the Chile earthquake. So far I have paid for it all out of pocket. We have $10 already donated in $75 in giveaway pledges. It is such a worth while cause. We really need a lot more money to help. This is enough for four-six families. It is a start and it goes in the mail today!!! Click the yellow DONATE button on the right hand sidebar. Every little bit helps and 100% goes directly to Chilean families.
So…since I am late 🙂 Here are my last three week’s “In My Mailbox Posts”

If you are interested in being on my ARC tour lists for any of these titles, please email me the name of the book and your address. THANKS!

Yellow Rose Perfume CHILE Relief Giveaway

10 Mar, 2010 by in etsy 24 comments

Today’s giveaway is from etsy seller and Chile native, L’aromatica! Her hometown, Talca was destroyed by the earthquake and she want to give back to her country…

Loreto is an artisan perfumer and graphic designer. She lives with her husband and teenage son in a sunny flat on Haight Street in San Francisco.

Loreto creates all of L’aromatica’s fragrances from scratch using pure essential oils mixed with a little fragrance oil when necessary, for scents that nature can’t produce. L’aromatica also carries All-Natural perfumes that are made using only 100% pure essential oils diluted in jojoba oil, for those who are sensitive or opposed to the use of synthetics. Even for straightforward, single-floral scents like Honeysuckle, Gardenia or Jasmine, Loreto creates her own blend, based on her perception of the true flower fragrance.

Loreto doesn’t just pour fragrance oils and bottle them as her own. Every perfume she offers is a handmade, original creation. A lot of love is put into every scent, plus hours of attention and patience.

Natural perfumes are much more subtle than mass-produced, “name brand” perfumes but develop amazing qualities, once on the skin. Once applied, a natural perfume will combine with your body chemistry to create a scent unique to you. Natural perfumes contain no harsh chemicals, additives, fillers or fixatives. L’aromatica uses only the best quality essential oils (most are organic) and fragrance oils that do not contain phthalates (whenever possible.)

Product Description
Twelve-year-old Isabel is dying to get out of Oregon. She spends her free time in the library, reading and dreaming about faraway places. When her mom decides to open a cupcake shop in their little town of Willow, Isabel feels just like buttercream frosting to a cupcake stuck.
It seems as if it will be another disappointing summer, until Isabel learns of a baking contest. If she can come up with a winning recipe, she might have a chance of competing in the bake-off in New York City!

But Isabel’s best friend, Sophie, is also entering the contest and things always seem to go Sophie’s way. To make matters worse, Isabel and her mom don’t exactly see eye to eye on the type of recipe Isabel should enter.

In this sweet treat by popular teen author Lisa Schroeder, Isabel discovers that maybe it’s not about where you go in life as much as it is about enjoying the view from wherever you are.

GO GET IT!! In the meantime, enjoy my cupcake items in the Etsy shop! http://www.etsy.com/search_results_shop.php?search_query=cupcakes&search_type=user_shop_ttt_id_6824796&ref=auto

Brightly Woven Purse Chile Relief Giveaway

09 Mar, 2010 by in purse 30 comments

Today’s Chiule relief giveaway is from Etsy seller Lorena Ferreira.
Hello everyone, my name is Lorena. I was born in Chile and raised in New York. I started knitting first (self taught at 19), then crocheting when I was expecting my second baby (I have 3), and finally weaving–self taught too–I read everything that comes into my hands, of course the internet, …but mainly I get my hands “dirty” and weave.

I explore, experiment, and intuition is my way of going about making all my textiles. I start with colors—putting them next to each other…sometimes it takes weeks for me to figure out what will go with what…and the where is an ongoing process during the weaving (or crocheting…or felting). I learned to wet felt last year (self taught…what a surprise)…and I love it.

I make one of a kind textiles, non-reproducible (I’ve tried) , unique…..as you will see (and feel hopefully).

Description
This one of a kind and unique clutch is just bursting with color, ready to go to a party, to cocktails, work..anywhere. The truth is she just wants to be seen!!!
Crocheted in two shades of rosie pink and bulky rainbow…she then went for a swim in hot water and soap, and came out beautifully felted and strong.
Spunky hand felted blossom in handspun/handyed rainbow with black petals and a huge pinback so you can wear it on your coat, scarf….
she is 10-12″ wide
and 8″tall (without handles..add 3 more inches)

This is a weekly book meme
hosted by Miz B. of Should Be Reading.

This is how it works:
Grab a book that you are currently reading
Turn to any page and grab two teaser sentences from that page
Make sure it’s not a spoiler in case anyone wants to read the book
Include the author and name of the book

“His back was to me, but I saw how he brought his knees to his chest and pressed his face down hard against them. Something inside me lurched at the sight, and eventually I got up to wrap his grey blanket around him…” p. 53
