Scavenger Hunt Clue 10

A few short months ago, Chloe Daniels, an actress, had come to Tillbridge to research life at a horse stable for an audition. They’d fallen for each other. She’d since won the part in Shadow Valley, and now Chloe and Tristan were both excited about spending more time together while she worked on the film.

“If you don’t want to bother Tristan, there is another way.” From the look in Philippa’s eyes, Rina already knew what she was going to say.

“Ask Zurie instead of Tristan for help? That’s a huge nope. First, I’d get the judgy look, then I’d get a lecture from her on what I should have done to prevent Dennis from leaving and after that, she’d try to micromanage whoever she sent over to my cafe to help out. It’s not worth the headache.”

Philippa held her hands up in surrender. “It was just a suggestion.

She is the co-manager of the entire operation along with Tristan.”

It wasn’t a bad idea, but these days, Rina didn’t have energy for the smile, ignore, deflect game she usual y played with Zurie whenever she talked to her. “Someone cal ed the cafe today looking for a job. They could work out, and who knows, Dennis could change his mind and come back.”

“Maybe.”

Rina followed Philippa’s gaze that had shifted to the two men in front of the barn. “I didn’t know middle-aged guys were your thing.

Don’t be shy. Prance on over there and say hello to him.”

“I don’t prance. I walk graceful y. And if I were interested in saying hello to anyone, it would be the guy that ran into you. He’s Nash Moreland’s stunt double, and in my opinion, he’s a lot better looking than Nash.”

Thirtyish, dirty blond hair on the longish side, a five o’clock shadow covering his angled jawline, hazel green eyes with more than a hint of mischief to match his easy smile. It did al fit together for an appealing package. “He’s okay.”

“Just okay? You wouldn’t say that if you saw him without the jacket. He had it off earlier when he came over here to ask for some water. Girl…” Philippa fanned her face. “After seeing him up close, I needed water to cool off. Too bad this film isn’t about lifeguards.”

Rina’s own imagination wandered into Philippa’s daydream territory, rewinding to when he’d effortlessly held her up while keeping the tray of pies from falling to the ground. Then it morphed into him without the jacket, wrapping his strong arms around her while she leaned into his solid, muscular chest. Heat started to flush into her cheeks, and she swept the image aside. Now wasn’t the time for fantasies.

“Everyone will be here soon. Shouldn’t you bring out the rest of the food?”

“Probably.” Even though the two men had gone back inside the barn, Philippa still stared in that direction. “He looked intense when he came over here. I wonder what he’s like when he’s not working?”

The teasing, sexy, oh-so-confidant smile he’d flashed after “saving the pies” came into Rina’s mind.

Nash Moreland’s double sailed out of the barn, and in one fluid movement, he rolled to a crouching position with the prop pistol in his hand.

The way he performed that stunt so easily and mindlessly told Rina al she needed to know. Just like Xavier, he viewed himself as invincible.

“Almost ran you over. And like I said. It was my greatest stunt ever.”

“You’re still sticking with that, huh?”

“Yep. And it will always be the greatest.” His smile lit up the love in his eyes and touched her heart. “Because it gave me you.”

Review

The Christmas Promise is a redemptive story of a YA adult author who returns to the town of a tragic accident. Ella comes in search of closure and apologies. Her whole life she has carried the burden of being wrongly accused. As she returns, the town erupts in whispers, dirty looks and snubbing. It’s as if no time has passed. The Winters family has so much to discover and heal from as do the residents of their town. The Christmas Promise is a tale with a theme of forgiveness. The events allow many to experience growth and change. Lighthouse Cove is the perfect setting for this holiday romance–a tourist town divided between regular residents ad Summer vacationers. The plot is a bit repetitive in spots as so many characters have to work through and confess their secrets. By the end Ben Winters wins readers over. Good, clean Christmas romance in a beautiful setting. I received a complimentary copy for this tour.

Life has changed all four of them in immeasurable ways. Maze and Cat must decide if they can rebuild their friendship, and Maze discovers her long-held attraction to Walker hasn’t faded with the years but has only grown stronger.

REVIEW

It’s been a really long time since I have laughed out loud reading a book. Jill’s cast of characters won me over! Foster children now adults, they reunite for their sister Cat’s wedding. One week of memories from their childhood and new life situations to navigate. They have to overcome the ghosts of accidental death and heartbreak. Now they face the dynamic of a stressful wedding and an overbearing mother-in-law. My favorite duo were Walker and Maze. What a complex, yet perfect couple. Reminiscent of the movie Sweet Home Alabama. This can be read as a standalone. Content is adult. Thanks so much to William Morrow for such a fun read!

Chain of Gold by Cassandra Claire

Chain of Gold

The Last Hours #1

by Cassandra Clare

Hardcover

592 pages

Published March 3rd 2020

by Margaret K. McElderry Books

Amazon

Chain of Gold, a Shadowhunters novel, is the first novel in a brand-new trilogy where evil hides in plain sight and love cuts deeper than any blade. .

Cordelia Carstairs is a Shadowhunter, a warrior trained since childhood to battle demons. When her father is accused of a terrible crime, she and her brother travel to London in hopes of preventing the family’s ruin. Cordelia’s mother wants to marry her off, but Cordelia is determined to be a hero rather than a bride. Soon Cordelia encounters childhood friends James and Lucie Herondale and is drawn into their world of glittering ballrooms, secret assignations, and supernatural salons, where vampires and warlocks mingle with mermaids and magicians. All the while, she must hide her secret love for James, who is sworn to marry someone else.

But Cordelia’s new life is blown apart when a shocking series of demon attacks devastate London. These monsters are nothing like those Shadowhunters have fought before—these demons walk in daylight, strike down the unwary with incurable poison, and seem impossible to kill. London is immediately quarantined. Trapped in the city, Cordelia and her friends discover that their own connection to a dark legacy has gifted them with incredible powers—and forced a brutal choice that will reveal the true cruel price of being a hero.

Review

How did I not know a Cassandra Clare book was exactly what I needed in life right now? My, oh my, I had forgotten how much I love the magic she weaves. Much like the Infernal Devices, Chain of Gold took me to the land of Shadowhunters, rich gowns and kick a heroines. Cassie brought me back to the escape we all seek and rekindled my first love, for reading YA. I may have to dust off my Mortal Instruments series and give them a re-read after seeing Magnus Bain and the Herrondales again. Chain of Gold was incredible. There were so many hidden gems of knowledge and wisdom in the story line, especially from silent brother Jem.

“Do not let those who cannot see the truth tell you who you are. You are a flame 🔥 that can not be put out. You are the star that cannot be lost. You are who you have always been, and that is enough and more than enough.”- Jem.

I was immersed in London, in the Victorian taverns and downworlder hot spots. Cassie is a master at Fantasy. ( I ordered three more of her books today) Can not wait for book two of the Last Hours to come out in March. If you need to start off 2021 right, pick up this series.

Thank you McElderry books for the review copy!

Content: drinking, passionate kissing, LGBTQ relationships, moderate violence

It’s 1990, and New York soloist April Manning is trying to rebalance her world in the aftermath of her parents’ deaths. An offer to join the struggling West Coast Ballet Theatre as a principal dancer seems like the perfect opportunity for a fresh start—a new life in San Francisco, an exciting step up in her career, and the hope of a redefined sense of family. But the other dancers are wary, clannish and tight-lipped, particularly about an incident that hastened the departure of their beloved artistic director, leading to the arrival of his replacement, the young, inexperienced Anders Gunst. And no one wants to talk about Jana, a former company member who defiantly walked out rather than work under Anders. It is Jana herself who offers April hints, and even friendship, where she reveals a loneliness and hunger to belong that newly orphaned April well understands. But there is something troubling about Jana, and what April doesn’t know could prove deadly.

A prequel to the Ballet Theatre Chronicles, BALLET ORPHANS explores the work and sacrifices required to arrive at the highest tiers of the professional ballet world, coupled with the primal, universal desire to belong, to love and be loved, and the lengths we’ll go to protect those we call family.

“A stimulating and entertaining tale in which passion and art intermingle.” — Kirkus Reviews

Review: Ballet Orphans highlights the highly competitive, all engrossing life of a professional ballerina. The main character loses her family figuratively, in pursuit of her dreams and literally. She has a lot of growth to make in this book from an unsure second to a principal dancer. I enjoyed the setting and the depth of the characters, as well as the realistic portayal of life as a dancer. It is a bit of a heavy read with many inner and personal battles. The terminology will be tough for those who are not familiar with ballet positions. There is a glossary for the readers at the back of the book. Overall, I thought the author did a great job of immersing us in the lives of two ballet companies and the transition from one to the next. Content: moderate swearing, drinking

A Regency romance on the high seas. Two hearts yearning to find a safe harbor, and possibly, a lasting love.

As a young girl, Georgana Woodall dreamed of beautiful dresses, fancy balls, and falling in love. However, when her mother dies, she cannot face a future under the guardianship of her abusive grandmother and instead chooses to join her father on his ship disguised as his cabin boy, “George.”

Lieutenant Dominic Peyton has no time in his life for love, not with his dedication to His Majesty’s Royal Navy claiming his full attention. While trying to adjust to a new crew, he strives to be an exemplary officer and leader. When he sees the captain’s cabin boy being harassed by the crew, he immediately puts a stop to it and takes the “boy” under his wing. After discovering a number of clues, Dominic deduces that George is really a woman. Knowing that revealing the cabin boy’s secret would put her in serious danger from the rowdy crew, Dominic keeps silent and hides his growing affection for her.

Georgana is quickly losing her heart to Dominic’s compassion and care but is convinced nothing can come of her affection. She cannot continue to live her life on the sea, and having already missed too many seasons in London, her chances of being welcomed back into polite society and finding a suitable husband are quickly slipping away.

ADVANCE PRAISE:

“Hawks crafts a spellbinding tale featuring rich characters and raw emotions set against the atmospheric backdrop of sea life in all its danger and beauty. Georgana is a tough protagonist holding her own in a world dominated by men, while Peyton’s charm and sensitivity marks him as a true gentleman. A hidden identity, flirtation, and treachery make for a rousing tale to captivate lovers of historical romances.”— Publishers Weekly

“This tale felt sweepingly cinematic at times and was both action-packed and heart-wrenching with an immersive narrative.”— Katie Jackson, RegencyProofreading.com

Arlem Hawks wove a magnificent tale of adventure and deception and delivered a happy ever after that was as unconventional as the rest of the story. With so many stories of romance out there, it is refreshing when one comes along that is very different than the stories that I am used to. A little adventure always livens things up fabulously.”— Emily Flynn, Reading with Emily

“Fans of sweet love stories as well as readers who fondly remember those marvelous old traditional Signet Regencies will quickly succumb to the siren song of Hawk’s expertly crafted novel, which delivers the perfect blend of Jane Austen-smart romance and Patrick O’Brian flavored seafaring adventure. Teen romance readers will cheer on the plucky heroine as she finds the courage to forge her own path in life and love.”— Booklist, starred review

AUTHOR BIO:

Arlem Hawks began making up stories before she could write. Living all over the Western United States and traveling around the world gave her a love of cultures and people and the stories they have to tell. With her travels came an interest in history, especially the history of her English heritage. When she isn’t writing, Arlem is baking her characters’ favorite foods, sewing Regency dresses, learning how to play the tin whistle, and water coloring. She lives in Arizona with her husband and two children. Having previously published four historical romance novellas, Georgana’s Secret is her debut novel.

Excerpt

The blinds are drawn because I need them to be. There are days the light is welcome, but not today. Today I need the darkness. It is the best way I know to pull them in close, here in the dark, in the empty spaces where they no longer exist and yet still take up every particle of air.

My life. My love. My family. James and Josh. My husband and son, stolen while I was sleeping, peacefully unaware at that very moment that the entire world was shattering.

It’s the small things that hurt the most. An unexpected letter with his name on it. A television commercial for Linvilla Orchards – where we picked peaches every July, just the two of us at first, and then with Josh. His familiar scent trailing behind a stranger, its ghostly arms wrapping around my lungs and squeezing. The crisp sting of empty sheets as autumn turns to winter.

Worst of all: the sudden ring of a child’s laughter breaking the silence and tearing my heart into a thousand tiny pieces.

I stroke the fur on Miss Molly’s golden head and close my eyes. “I’m sorry,” I whisper, even though dogs don’t understand apologies. “It’s this day, it’s….”

I let the words trail off, unable to say out loud that five years ago my husband and son took their last breath, trapped in a car wreck, and I hadn’t been there. Unable to say that while they were dying, I lay peacefully in bed, useless and selfish, taking an afternoon nap. It hadn’t even woken me. I hadn’t sat up, my instincts kicking into overdrive. I hadn’t experienced so much as a bad dream.

At the time friends told me I should try to forgive myself, that it wasn’t my fault. They brought soup, and sent messages. They held me and promised things would get better. They stood on my stoop and reminded me, “There’s nothing you could have done.”

Therapists call my depression and anxiety a form of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Survivor’s guilt, they say, although that’s not the official term. Apparently it’s natural for parents who outlive their children to experience a sense of blame, but I have struggled to believe there is anything natural about it. Could there be anything more unnatural than for a mother to bury her son?

Then there were the people who told me to have faith. I’ve never been a religious person, but I have stood alone on a rainy afternoon and heard the hollow thump of dirt shoveled onto a tiny white casket. I’ve heard the mournful cry of a loon as people, not knowing what else to say, turned and made the sad walk back to their cars. I have stood as day turned to night, staring at two holes in the ground, hoping my husband and son wouldn’t be cold on the first night away from their beds. Away from me. Having faith would mean believing James and Josh were taken for a reason, that there was some divinity to their absence. There is not. There is only pain and empty spaces.

I get up from the couch and pull the curtains further across. But no matter how dark I make the room, there are always slivers of light that keep me in the place I don’t want to be.

Slivers that never let me bury the one question I still have no answer for.

How do I ever find the strength to step into the light when they are forever lost in the dark?

About Nikki:

Nikki Lee Taylor is a long-time newspaper journalist turned fiction writer. She is also a dreamer, a doer, a storyteller, a coffee lover, and fur mum to two golden retrievers Max and Sam.

She spends most of her time staring into space, walking between worlds, and creating out-loud character dialogue that sounds a lot like talking to herself in the shower. She stays up late plotting and planning the lives of characters yet to be created and starts every day embraced by the warmth of a good coffee.

She is a courageous booktrovert who lives life with her right foot in NSW, Australia and the left in a world that exists only in her head.

She reads books out loud to anyone who’ll listen and drives her husband mad spending all her free time with friends who exist only on the page.

The story is over. It’s already too late.

At the end of the Turkish War of Independence, a British soldier disobeys orders to return home. Setting out to explore a country he had only known as trespasser, he uncovers danger, mysteries, and magic—adventure, obsession, and true love.

One hundred years later, the soldier’s great-granddaughter sits at her great-grandmother’s deathbed while the old woman recounts this very tale; it is the last she will ever tell.

Secrets are revealed as past and present collide, and as one woman’s future draws toward its inevitable close, another finds hers thrown into uncertainty.

REVIEW: The title and cover brought me to read Matriarch, though I’ve never read any other works by this author. With folklore and fairy tale elements as well as a touch of supernatural, this novella is unique. I was drawn into the tale of wishes, true love and family. The ending is a surprise an the plot is twisty. Well written, new take on some well loved stories. So many unanswered questions! To be continued…perhaps?

Where We Begin

(The Berkshires #1)

By Janey King

New Adult Contemporary Romance

Paperback & ebook, 250 Pages

November 1, 2020

Amazon

Fate never gives you everything you want. But sometimes, when you least expect it, you get exactly what (or who) you need…

Hannah’s life has suddenly become a lot less. Jobless, homeless, and boyfriend-less, that is. Now, all she wants is a fresh start—and her sister’s charming small town is the perfect setting for it. Finding a new romance is nowhere on her agenda. Too bad her heart (the stupid organ that beats a little faster every time her new boss is near) didn’t get the memo.

Collin hasn’t been lucky when it comes to romance, either. But knowing he’s not cut out for love doesn’t stop him from wanting his beautiful new employee with an intensity that terrifies him. He barely survived losing his fiancée. Losing Hannah…well, he’s afraid there wouldn’t be any coming back from that.

Can Hannah and Collin overcome the pain of their pasts—and the secrets they’re both still carrying—to take a shot at happily ever after? Or are they destined to remain star crossed forever?

Where We Begin, Book 1 in The Berkshires series, is a lightly angsty, sweet, new adult contemporary romance featuring a down-but-not-out heroine and the beaten-but-not-broken hero of her dreams. Get ready to fall in love with your next favorite book boyfriend.

Review

What a cliffhanger! Where We Begin is the first book I’ve read by author Janey King. Set in a small, but ritzy area centered around a coffee and donut shop owned by local singer Collin, it has coming of age elements. Both Collin and Hannah have begun the road to overcome loss and trauma, together they find belonging and healing. I loved both characters personalities which came shining through. The pacing is perfect and atmosphere great for the holidays. It is a bit angsty, with a dash of drama, but not over the top.

Content: drinking, mention of sex, triggers for alcoholism and loss. It feels like more of an adult romance read due to crude language and descriptions.

About the Author

Janey King is a New Adult romance author. Where We Begin is her debut novel.

She lives in New Jersey with her husband and young son in a historic house that was built in 1887. When she’s not writing, she can be found fixing or redoing something in her house, tending to her gardens and planter boxes, riding her bike all over town, and sitting on the beach during the warm summer months.

She must have lived a past life in the UK because her search for teahouses, plates of tiny sandwiches, and scones has become an obsession everywhere she goes.
