With exclusive access to previously hidden diaries, family and camp survivor accounts, and recently declassified files, critically acclaimed and award-winning journalist Jack Fairweather brilliantly portrays the remarkable man who volunteered to face the unknown in the name of truth and country. This extraordinary and eye-opening account of the Holocaust invites us all to bear witness.

Occupied Warsaw, Summer 1940:

Witold Pilecki, a Polish underground operative, accepted a mission to uncover the fate of thousands interned at a new concentration camp, report on Nazi crimes, raise a secret army, and stage an uprising. The name of the camp — Auschwitz.

Over the next two and half years, and under the cruellest of conditions, Pilecki’s underground sabotaged facilities, assassinated Nazi officers, and gathered evidence of terrifying abuse and mass murder. But as he pieced together the horrifying Nazi plans to exterminate Europe’s Jews, Pilecki realized he would have to risk his men, his life, and his family to warn the West before all was lost. To do so meant attempting the impossible — but first he would have to escape from Auschwitz itself…

Praise for The Volunteer (adult edition):

“This is a story that has long deserved a robust, faithful telling, and [Fairweather] has delivered it.” — Wall Street Journal

“An extraordinary story.” — The Times

* “A forceful narrative with unstoppable reading momentum, Fairweather has created an insightful biography of a covert war hero and an extraordinary contribution to the history of the Holocaust.” — Booklist, starred review

“Witold Pilecki is one of the great — perhaps the greatest — unsung heroes of the second world war… Jack Fairweather’s meticulous and insightful book is likely to be the definitive version of this extraordinary life.” — Economist

Review: What a timely piece by Jack Fairweather and Scholastic Press. Never has it been more important than today to study the history of the Holocaust and the extreme views which led up to Auschwitz. The author highlights a covert, undercover war hero who works from the inside to take down the Nazi regime. Full of historic photos, maps and rich information, this is a book that could be used in a classroom to tell a relatively unknown story about a man who risk everything. It highlights Poland and the Soviet involvement as well, which adds layers to the backstory. Overall, though the content is hard to digest, it is necessary to learn. Thank you for the advanced copy along with a chance to herald an unsung hero Pilecki.

About Jack Fairweather:

Jack Fairweather is a former war reporter in Iraq and Afghanistan and the author of A War of Choice and The Good War. The adult edition that tells this story is titled The Volunteer: The True Story of the Resistance Hero Who Infiltrated Auschwitz, which was named winner of the Costa Award and a #1 Sunday Times bestseller. Jack has served as the Daily Telegraph’s Baghdad bureau chief, and as a video journalist for the Washington Post in Afghanistan. His war coverage has won a British Press Award and an Overseas Press Club award citation.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

Three novellas, three times the romance, and three times the love . . . in this brand new Timeless Regency Collection

The Seventh Star Inn, by Sally Britton

After years of looking after one another, Susan Baxter and her mother view their neighbors in Totnes as family. When a new landlord inherits the leases on their homes and businesses alike, Susan dreads knowing her world could change at the whim of a stranger. But when she meets Collin Stonecroft and his inquisitive daughter, her feelings shift quickly from cautionary to hopeful. Collin has lived in the confines of London boarding houses all his life, and he’s determined to give his daughter more. They check into the Seventh Star Inn with plans to return to London as soon as possible, but both find Miss Baxter and her local history lessons far too enchanting to leave behind. When Susan learns of Collin’s proposed changes to her beloved neighborhood, will she be able to help him see that some things are perfect the way they are?

The Truth about Mr. Blackmore, by Annette Lyon

Leigh’s life at the Old Grey Inn is drudgery broken by flights of fancy thanks in part to novels by Simon Blackmore. When Mattias McGrady comes to the inn for a fortnight, Leigh captures his attention. A relationship develops, and she dreads the end of his stay, which will mean a return to an unhappy life. An urgent letter to Mattias leads to him inviting Leigh to an event that stands to change both of their lives forever. If all goes well, Leigh will have a life of her choosing after all. But half-truths and lies have a way of complicating matters. When their plans go awry, Leigh loses her reputation and Mattias almost surely loses his career. Can either of them find happiness?

The Coachman’s Choice, by Deborah M. Hathaway

Ever-reliable Mary Thorne has helped her widowed mother run The Golden Mermaid Inn for years. She spends her days greeting guests, ensuring the inn runs smoothly—and dodging flirtatious remarks from passing coachmen. But she’s far too busy to pay any attention to such men, even the enticingly attractive Mr. Northcott. Known far and wide for his horsemanship, punctuality, and dallying reputation, Robert Northcott relishes his life as a coachman, especially his freedom to flirt with numerous women from inn to inn, all without the messy details of commitment. There’s just one woman who’s immune to his charms: the lovely, single landlady of The Golden Mermaid. Robert is determined to win Mary over, just as heartily as she is determined to keep her distance from him. But his carefree life is threatened when his pursual of Mary becomes more than just a game…

REVIEW

The Inns of Devonshire anthology is a collection of happily ever afters about strong and loving women. Each story was well written, even as a short story. Past the years of regular courtship according to society, the “spinsters” make their own way to a beautiful ending. The readers get a snippet of three different authors. It’s a welcome diversion. Clean, historical and moving. Loved!

A historical novel, set in postwar New York City.

In 1946, Eva leaves behind the rubble of Berlin for the streets of New York City, stepping from the fiery aftermath of one war into another, far colder one, where power is more important than principles, and lies are more plentiful than the truth. Eva holds the key to a deadly secret: Project Bluebird — a horrific experiment of the concentration camps, capable of tipping the balance of world power. Both the Americans and the Soviets want Bluebird, and it is something that neither should ever be allowed to possess.

But Eva hasn’t come to America for secrets or power. She hasn’t even come for a new life. She has come to America for one thing: justice. And the Nazi that has escaped its net.

Review

Wow, I’m not really sure what to think knowing that Project Bluebird was real and the U.S. Government was cooperating with Nazis after World War II. This historical fiction novel by Sharon Cameron takes the reader through the inside of a fractured mind and wartime atrocities. It’s definitely an older teen, if not, adult read. Eva has come to New York with her childhood friend Brigit to start over after Nazi Germany is occupied and the war is won. The find solace in a home with other orphans and refugees. The dividing lines in America are different, but they exist. Written in two points of view that eventually converge, Bluebird has a high level of suspense and psychological intrigue. I personally struggled with the trauma both main female characters experienced. Nazi and post war Germany was not a kind place. The author uses historically accurate places and details to fill in the story line. I learned a lot and thought the societal parallels to some of what we are experiencing today were interesting. This could be used as a history read for college students.

Thank you Scholastic Press for an advanced reading copy which I received for the tour.

Review

What a fun book! Carla and Franco are both cut throat when it comes to business, both are interested in keeping their family businesses afloat. Carla’s father, Carlo Falco has suffered a heart attack, but can’t seem to back off and let her take the lead as CEO. Her solution…strike up a contract with him which includes her getting married and settling down. She’s found the groom, but things take a turn when she realizes this may not be just a marriage of convenience after all. Groom Franco is ever attentive, but both he and Carla come from an old family feud. The Marchello and Falco families can not trust each other or move past their grievances. Will Romeo and Juliet be able to mend the rift in business and marriage?

I loved every minute of Falling for Her Convenient Groom. It’s a quick read–the perfect length, that leaves you wanting to read the rest of the series. I do recommend starting with book one since the characters are family and make cameos in this installment. Set in a dreamy Italian lake town with sweeping villas and rich flavors, this is a wonderful escape. Franco is dead set against marriage and family from scars of his childhood, but what a gentleman! He is the gem of the story. Not to miss! Thanks to the author for the complimentary copy for the tour.

Content and trigger warnings: alcoholism, gambling, absent parents, heart disease, off page scene, mention of consummating a marriage.

Three Springs, Texas is the perfect place to start a new series. The pace is slow, the characters mostly octogenarians seeking to make a match in others and there’s a strong sense of community. A town so small gossip travels like wildfire and the local gardening club meetings soak up the whole population. Abby is coming to make a new start in her little red convertible and stylish clothes, when she hits a pot hole on the side road and has to be taken into town on horseback by cowboy Wes. It’s a fun start to two reluctant adults meeting one another int he middle of nowhere. Abby needs a fresh start since being jilted by her ex- boyfriend, so she heads to her cousins in the town where their grandparents had roots. I loved the mentions of family history and the rich folklore which surrounds Three Springs. It has a deep history full of treasure and strong willed occupants. The general store renovation works perfectly for anyone who’s been to an old Western town. There’s always an old general store, not to mention wooden plant sidewalks.

My only wish was the Wes and Abby would have speed outside their internal dialogue and interacted a bit more honestly with one another. The readers know the thoughts of both main characters inside and out, but it’s not until the ending chapters anything plays out. Slow paced, clean romance with an old Wild, West town which has settled into a place where community wraps around its occupants to hep them have a better life. If you want a book with endearing townsfolk who look out for heartwarming, western, clean romance, toureach other, look no further!

Content and trigger warning: cheating, alcohol consumption, unwed pregnancy, widowhood and absent family members.

Set sail for an engaging adventure between two journalists on a cruise and writing for their local newspaper. Eve has vowed to never date a co-worker again after being burned. Adam is out to prove he deserves a place in her life. When work throws them together, literally, bounds are about to be tested. With constant witty banter between the two, this is a page turner! I loved Adam’s snarky personality and confidence weighted with an equal measure of care and concern for pursuits outside himself. Eve is in need of a confidence boost after being burned. Adam is the one to help. I read the book in one day since the conversation and interactions between the two main characters are fun to behold. Hugh, the ex shows unexpectedly to try his hand at winning back Eve. Prepare for sparks to fly. Thanks so much to the author for an engaging, laugh out loud romantic comedy. I received a complimentary copy for the tour and all views are my own.

Content and trigger warnings: adult, “F” word, detailed bedroom scene (I skipped over), plagiarism and sexism in workplace.

mundane work of running the book and print shop she owns with her father. The

Review

The Dread Penny Society is back again in installment three of Sarah Eden’s series. I liked this one best of all of them I’ve read. Brogan and his sister are heroes in their own right and there’s so much more to them than the rumors which have been spread. The reader learns to look beneath the surface past the obvious. Vera is a strong woman in London who runs a shop and takes care of street urchins on the side. It truly is a hard life to live on the streets of London as a child at this time. Shop owners are also battling bullies and crime to keep their doors open.

I do recommend reading these books in order as they build on one another and the characters carry over. If you are a point A to point B reader who likes plot resolution before moving on, you may want to delay reading the penny dreadful chapters all in one sitting, since they break up the pacing and plot. I was able to follow along this time since I enjoyed the candy store plot with paranormal folklore sandwiched in between the main chapters. This is a unique series with rich detail. Loved the cover design and colors. Enjoy!

I received a complimentary advanced copy from the publisher, thoughts are my own.

Content and trigger warning: moderate violence, crimes against women and children.

A society woman leaves her comfortable lifestyle so that she can help her daughter adjust to the arrival of twin sons in a small town where the courageous doctor teaches her about taking risks.

Wealthy and sociable Margaret Millerson has always thought of her brother’s Chicago mansion as her home. But when she receives the telephone call that her daughter has given birth to twins three weeks ahead of the expected due date, Margaret must leave her comfortable home, her family, and her friends to travel out of state. While she is helping her daughter care for the infants, Margaret becomes reacquainted with the town’s doctor, Matthew Kaldenberg.

Dr. Matthew Kaldenberg stays busy caring for the health of the citizens of his small town. His profession offers him daily practice in defeating death, his greatest enemy. During the twenty years since losing his own wife and baby in childbirth, Matthew has saved his money for the purchase of a flying machine. But when Matthew takes Margaret for flights on his biplane, he learns that his dreams of rising above the griefs and losses of his past come with a cost. He doesn’t want to lose the trust of the people he cares about most, or the chance at a relationship with Margaret.

About the Author

Michelle De Bruin grew up in Southern Iowa and graduated from Eddyville High School. These beautiful memories of childhood spent on her family’s farm are the inspiration to the setting in the books of the Tomorrow series.

After high school, Michelle received an Associate’s Degree in Office Management from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. She returned to the family farm and later married Tom De Bruin.

Tom and Michelle and their two teenage sons, Mark and John, live in Pella where Michelle works as the Spiritual Services Facilitator for Christian Opportunity Center. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music and in Religion with a Christian Ministries emphasis from Central College in Pella, Iowa.

In 2015, Michelle began writing and joined the American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) where she discovered that the stories she wrote for fun might actually amount to something. She finished her manuscript for Hope for Tomorrow and eventually found a home for it with a small publisher of Christian fiction.

Characters that bring to life the delights of farm and small town living, whispers of Dutch heritage, and Christian faith make Michelle’s stories distinct.

Review

The first thing I noticed about Coming Home to Mercy is that the bakery owners written in the book have my name! I have never read the name written in the pages of fiction, as it is relatively rare int he U.S. I was so excited to see it! The baker’s family are mentioned several times in the story line, so it was an extra special treat.

A slow moving Christian fiction tale, the author highlights changes at the turn of the century. The differences between city and country life, the East coast versus more rural communities. The slower pace and family oriented communities are contrasted to high society life. Technological advances are also discussed: airplanes, telephones, cars versus horse drawn buggies. The two main characters are both widowed and neither have plans to re-marry or seek a second relationship. Both have broken hearts which have mended over the years. I wish we knew as readers why they had fallen in love sooner than we did. Their first meeting years ago is vaguely alluded to. I enjoyed the Christian themes as well as the emphasis on taking care of those around you and being humble. The author does a good job fully fleshing out what every day life would have looked like during this time period. The chores, the ironing, laundry, meals, charity work. It reminded me a bit of a cross between historical fiction and Amish fiction. Coming Home to Mercy is a clean read to escape the hustle and bustle of today’s busy culture for a simpler time. Thanks to the author for the complimentary copy as part of the official tour.

Content and trigger warning: clean, gambling, spouse and child loss.

BOOK DESCRIPTION

As a barrister in 1818 London, William Snopes has witnessed firsthand the danger of only the wealthy having their voices heard, and he’s a strong advocate who defends the poorer classes against the powerful. That changes the day a struggling heiress, Lady Madeleine Jameson, arrives at his door.

In a last-ditch effort to save her faltering estate, Lady Jameson invested in a merchant brig, the Padget. The ship was granted a rare privilege by the king’s regent: a Letter of Marque authorizing the captain to seize the cargo of French traders operating illegally in the Indian Sea. Yet when the Padget returns to London, her crew is met by soldiers ready to take possession of their goods and arrest the captain for piracy. And the Letter—-the sole proof his actions were legal—has mysteriously vanished.

Moved by the lady’s distress, intrigued by the Letter, and goaded by an opposing solicitor, Snopes takes the case. But as he delves deeper into the mystery, he learns that the forces arrayed against Lady Jameson, and now himself, are even more perilous than he’d imagined.
