The Iron Queen Inspired Giveaway

03 Feb, 2011 by in etsy 33 comments

In honor of Julie Kagawa’s book hitting #6 on the New York Times bestsellers list we are re-posting our Iron Queen review as well as an Iron Fey inspired giveaway. A huge congrats to Julie!

The Iron Queen
Paperback, 384 pages
Coming February 1, 2011
from Harlequin Teen
ISBN 0373210183
series Iron Fey #3
5 stars

In less than twenty-four hours I’ll be seventeen.

Although, technically, I won’t actually be turning seventeen. I’ve been in the Nevernever too long. When you’re in Faery, you don’t age. So while a year has passed in the real world, agewise I’m probably only a few days older than when I went in.

In real life, I’ve changed so much I don’t even recognize myself.

My name is Meghan Chase. I thought it was over. That my time with the fey, the impossible choices I had to make, the sacrifices of those I loved, was behind me. But a storm is approaching, an army of Iron fey that will drag me back, kicking and screaming. Drag me away from the banished prince who’s sworn to stay by my side. Drag me into the core of a conflict so powerful, I’m not sure anyone can survive it.

This time, there will be no turning back.

WOW. Julie Kagawa pulled up so many emotions with this third installment of her Iron Fey series. Her writing is absolutely incredible. The Iron Queen starts off as Meghan and Ash have been exiled from Never, Never and the paths of faery sealed forever. It is just the two of them in the quest for a stolen memory, back to New Orleans and finally hiding out. Meghan comes to the realization that she will have to fight, so she asks Ash and Puck to help her train. Learning to wield a sword, and balance the glamours that lie within, Meghan will be prepared to overcome whatever new forces are against her. There is plenty of warfare interlaced in beautiful vistas as iron meets magic. All of your favorite characters are back and readers will become enveloped in Julie’s writing which appeals to all of the senses “he smelled so good a mix of frost and something sharp like peppermint.” p.93

Ash is my all-time favorite fictional hero. I have been Team Ash since day one. The Iron Queen reinforces all that I have felt along the way, that he is so much more than an Ice Prince. He has a heart, and he is capable of deep love and loyalty. He has a history. He finally tells that story, opening up his heart and developing his soul. There’s not much for me to say without spoliery, but I cried more than once while reading this book. I loved the way Meghan and Ash can feel each others emotions and as they grow closer; they are better able to sense each other.

Once I got a copy there was no turning back on finishing the book. You will stay engulfed in faery until the very last page. The Iron Queen is fantasy, myth, technology, romance and action all rolled into one.

Reading The Iron Queen reminded me why I fell in love with Young Adult fiction in the first place. I’m thrilled Julie is writing book number four from Ash’s perspective. The more his story unravels the better, and here’s to hoping time ticks by swiftly until The Iron Knight.

Our second Outside In giveaway is for a stuffed sheepie similar to the one I imagine Riley had as a child and was donated by shop owner Knitting Follies.
“I’ve been sewing, knitting, and crafting in one form or another since I was 5 years years old, and doing so in a professional capacity on and off for the last 15 years. I teach knitting, design knitwear for humans and dogs, and design high-quality historic clothing for re-enactors, SCA, and Ren Faires.

In addition, I spin much of my own yarn and make many of my own knitting accessories, since no one knows better what I need in a tool or case than I do! “

Description: Adorable, handknit and felted sheep made from 100% wool and stuffed with polyester fiberfill. Each sheep is approximately 7 inches tall and 6 1/2 inches long, though each is handmade so each sheep is unique.

Silver Sheepy Necklace Giveaway

07 Jan, 2011 by in etsy, maria snyder, outside in, stick man jewelry 155 comments

Outr first ETSY shop giveaway to go with the book Outside In is a tiny silver sheep necklace like the one Riley gave to Trella. This handmade sheepy necklace was donated generously by Stick Man Jewelry.
“Hello! Our names are Virginia and Edward. We are based in the wonderful city of Montréal, and have been creating together as Stick Man for over fifteen years. We are mostly self-taught when it comes to silversmithing, although we both have backgrounds in fine arts. Inspiration comes from the naive drawings of childhood, as well as our strong love of animals and nature, and an appreciation for clean, simple lines. We work mostly with sterling silver, but we love the effect of mixed metals, and you will often find more than a touch of copper and bronze in our pieces. Our playful designs appeal to the young and the young at heart and are guaranteed to bring a smile to all who see them.”

Description: This woolly little lamb is made of sterling silver, with a brushed satin finish. The pendant itself is about 1/2″ high, which means that this is quite a TINY lamb, but that’s a big part of what makes him so cute.

Colorful Sailor Necklace Giveaway

26 Nov, 2010 by in etsy, violet bella 112 comments

Our etsy shop giveaway is a ship’s anchor necklace to go along with the book “The Water is Wide” by Marianne Monson and was donated by Violet Bella… “Hi. My name is Laura Mazurek, and I am the one man band behind Violet Bella. My line of jewelry, clothing and art speaks volumes of who I am. I am a lover of nature, a free spirit, an old soul and a constant creator. I adore vintage materials, granny squares, birds and leaves, patina, old keys and found objects. Beyond my creations, I enjoy life with my husband and animals, coffee, bike rides, hula hoop dancing, music on vinyls, photography, long drives, thrifting and decorating, among a million other things.

I am a believer in the handmade community. I try to buy handmade over mass produced as often as possible. Which is one reason I fell in love with the Etsy community. Every article of clothing you find in my shop is one of a kind. And each one is made from recycled vintage linens and fabrics. You will find similar styles, but no two are exactly alike.”

She will be giving away a Sailor’s necklace similar to the one above, made especially for our blog.

Vintage Compact Giveaway

07 Oct, 2010 by in etsy, matched 50 comments

Our ETSY giveaway goes with the book MATCHED by Ally Condie and is inspired by the compact she receives at her Match banquet which belonged to her grandmother. Generously donated by Etsy seller 2007Musarra.

“I have a love of vintage jewelery, every piece is different and I love to look for just the right piece so I can use it in the final product. I search far and wide for just that right piece. My friends love coming to my house just to go through my stash, even my mom has taken to going through everything, she will leave a note like: Hope you don’t mind but…I just, giggle, who can refuse such beautiful things my lovely daughter? As a matter fact when I was a little girl my grandma used to call me gypsy rosealea (who ever she was she must of had some fab jewelery)because I used to pile the jewelery on .Taking pieces from my aunts and adding my own. I would be so weighed down that I could hardly walk!It was the 70’s so add in the high vinyl rust colored boots and silkish shirts and you get the full picture! Vintage, ah what can I say they just don’t make it like that anymore, and clip on earrings who ever invented them well they should have to wear them 24/7 in eternity! I mean really. All us girls know it must have been a man who made those because they would have been more comfortable if they would have to had to wear them, best example: blue jeans!! They made those comfortable enough to work in. Humph. Grandmas jewelery does not have to sit in the drawer any more it can be made into something modern and pretty! Best part is no one else will have my jewelry you will be the envy of all your friends!

Description OH this is perfect! Powder your nose in no time flat with this wonderful vintage assembled necklace! The original glass is still there in great shape. The compact is from the 20″ wonderfully made in the USA from Zell 5th Avenue , New York, New York. OH this is a conversation starter for sure or you can help your girls out with your mirror so they can touch up that lip stick!!! The compact is in MINT condition 2-1/2 round. The necklace is 30″ long and vintage very cool and different.
