ABOUT THE FILM

Sisters—and dreams—are unique in their ability to inspire, encourage and change the world. For 150 years, Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women has motivated women of all ages to dream together and celebrate family. Coming to theaters for the first time, a modern retelling of LITTLE WOMEN brings a new generation together with their mothers, sisters and friends.

From girls playing in the attic to women living with purpose, the March sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy—are committed to always supporting each other. Yet, growing up sometimes means growing apart. An aspiring writer, Jo leaves for New York determined to publish a novel. In the wake of rejected draft upon draft, her editor challenges Jo to write about something more interesting—her family. When tragedy brings the sisters back home, sticking together takes on new meaning. As Jo comforts her sick sister, Beth asks for one thing: a story. Jo knows the perfect one … by heart.

Review

This movie made me feel all the feels! Haven’t cried over a show in a long time. The March sisters have a beautiful bond as homeschooled sisters with their father away in the military. They must navigate popularity, disappointments, sickness and coming of age. The beginning was a bit slow, but once the sisters began interacting with their neighbor Laurie, things picked up. He and Jo have a wonderful friendship. I love how everyone looks out for each other. Beth teaches the value in being a grounded and loving sister. Meg navigates the popular, rebellious teen scene before she settles on her future. Raw emotion and plenty of drama with Jo. So many life lessons all rolled up into a message about the importance of family, friendship and following your own unique life path.

Content: It is rated PG-13 for a reason. I would pre-screen Little Women before sitting down as a family to watch. Parental info: underage drinking, mild blood, heavy kissing scene.

Review
What a wonderful story about the redemptive quality of forgiveness, overcoming trials to come out a stronger person and trusting in a force bigger than your own. Evie and Ridge are fully fleshed real characters with real life problems and obstacles to face before they can have a happily ever after of their own. Hollywood favorite meets college student in a tale of healing and strength. There are themes of working through anxiety, addiction, heart break and moving past the masks of perfection and fame. If you haven’t read Love on Pointe, this is a follow up which can be read as a standalone. There are laugh out loud and tender moments which provoke thought. Highly recommend as a clean romance for adults.

Content: mention of, working through prescription drug abuse, premarital relations, pornography addiction. Clean language. No violence, mild kissing.

Daniel Cavanaugh has it all—a lucrative career as a lawyer, a gorgeous fiancée, and his future mapped out for him. So why is he feeling increasingly dissatisfied with his life? When the assignment to handle his late grandmother’s estate takes him to the California coast, Daniel welcomes the escape. Staying at the nearby bed-and-breakfast isn’t really his style, but he soon realizes the inn may hold the key to the answers he’s been seeking. Spindrift Cove has few opportunities for a young unmarried woman like Sarah Michaels. Even so, she enjoys her solitude as owner and chef at the Neverland Inn. She thrives on catering to the needs of her guests and treating them to her fantastic cooking. But when Daniel walks through her door, he immediately tests her patience. Though he is handsome and well-bred, she finds him insufferable. Soon, however, the tranquility of the inn works its magic, and Daniel and Sarah forge a sweet and unexpected connection—until the life he left behind in the city demands his return and it seems that a happily ever after may not be on the menu after all.

About the Author

K.C. Grant loves to write! From bad poetry at the age of seven to not-too-much-later attempts at a novel where the main character was a talkative red-haired girl (yes, that wasn’t very creative) she has loved to create stories. In her adult career, she has written for family oriented magazines like BackHome, Parents and Kids, The Washington Family and LDSLiving. She was so excited about the release of her first novel in 2010, “Abish: Daughter of God.” A sequel, “Abish: Mother of Faith” continues the story of Abish and focuses on the mothers of the stripling warriors.

K.C. will also get to continue her fascination with the setting of Mexico (this time with a modern twist) when her suspense novel titled “Venom” which came out January 2012.

The day of her parents' garden party dawns bright as Lydia Prescott eagerly anticipates a marriage proposal from a handsome and wealthy plantation owner. The lovely debutante plans to steal a moment away with her beau, but her plans go terribly awry. Instead of her intended, she is joined by a stranger the largest man she's ever laid eyes on. And it is clear Jacob Steele is there for reasons far more sober than the party. With British raids erupting all around them, it is his job to reassure plantation owners of their safety. In reality, however, Jacob is an espionage agent, and the truth is dire: America is on the verge of invasion by the British.

Blissfully unaware of the danger surrounding her, Lydia basks in the glow of her recent engagement. But her joy is short-lived—a surprise British attack results in a devastating wound, and her plans for the future are shattered. Lost in her devastation, Lydia could never dream that Jacob, that giant of a man she met so briefly, would prove to be her saving grace. And with a war raging around them, she may be called upon to save him too.

What an enjoyment! I grew up on the Chesapeake in Maryland, close to the nation’s capitol, so the sights and scenes of the Shipbuilder’s Wife held significance for me. Jennifer Moore does a wonderful job of capturing life during time of war and in the shipyard. She adds historical context and enough detail to make the story come alive. Talk of privateers, plantation owners, slaves, and a fledgling nation trying to make its way against the English redcoats will captivate historical fiction readers. Lydia and Jacob have a long way to go in their relationship and I certainly hope there are making for a companion book or sequel. Side character, Alden was a delight with his funny asides and spunky personality. A good book should make you want to learn more, and this did just that.

Biography

Jennifer Moore is a passionate reader and writer of all things romance due to the need to balance the rest of her world that includes a perpetually traveling husband and four active sons, who create heaps of laundry that is anything but romantic. Jennifer has a B.A. in Linguistics from the University of Utah and is a Guitar Hero champion. She lives in northern Utah with her family, but most of the time wishes she was aboard a British frigate during the age of sail.

Lord Elliott Mayfield has done his best to take care of his family, first his siblings and now his nieces and nephews. Unfortunately, he sees this new generation moving in the same direction of bad matches and scandalous relationships as the last. In hopes to change their course, he establishes a “marriage campaign” to motivate them to improve themselves through making respectable matches. With his heart in the right place, what could possibly go wrong?

Peter, Elliott’s eldest nephew, thinks the entire idea is ridiculous. A widower with two young daughters, he simply needs a governess, not a wife. Julia Hollingsworth certainly has the credentials and the experience, but is altogether too young and pretty for such a job. So why can’t he stop thinking about her?

Julia loves working as a governess, despite the objections of her mother, Amelia. And as it turns out, Amelia has a lot to say about the Mayfield men—none of it good. But Julia dismisses the rumors of ruined reputations and instead concentrates on helping Peter with his children and his fledgling business in canine husbandry. His kindness and gentleness is endearing—and increasingly attractive.

But Amelia, whose heart was broken thirty years ago by none other than Elliott Mayfield, is determined to prevent any relationship from blooming either between Peter and Julia—or between herself and Elliott.

Hearts and history collide as both couples must face their pasts and decide if risking it all is worth the promise of new love and a new future.

Julia is bound and determined to make it on her own without the interference of her overbearing mother as a governess. Her boss, Peter Mayfield has two young daughters to look out for after losing his wife and needs someone with just the right combination of talents. Each has a past to taint their prospect for a future together. The Mayfield name is tarnished by past misdeeds and Julia’s family is right in the thick of the hurt. Promises and Primroses addresses how to overcome society scandals to make one’s own path and decisions. With a theme of following your heart, there is a sweet friendship between Peter and Julia which blossoms into something more over time. They work together with animals and overcome personal doubts, to make a powerful pair.

Written from multiple perspectives, each chapter gives readers insight into what is going on with each character. I struggled with Julia’s mother Amelia because of how bitter and bossy she is. I am surprised that I genuinely enjoyed the details about animal husbandry and taking care of young pups. This looks to be the first in a series, so I’m excited to see what books two holds for the Mayfield family. Proper Romances by Shadow Mountain are some of my favorite reads because of the clean, and often historical content.

Jane & Emma Movie Trailer and $50 Amazon Gift Card Giveaway

28 Aug, 2018 by in excel Leave a comment

FILM SYNOPSIS: JANE & EMMA is based on the life of Sister Jane Manning, one of the first black Mormons. She returns to Nauvoo to find that Joseph Smith, her prophet and friend, has been assassinated. Jane spends a ceaseless night with his widow, Emma Smith, sitting watch over the body of the prophet as a whirlwind of loss and confusion leaves them wondering how either one of them will be able to move forward. Through the long night, Jane wonders if the prophet’s promise to extend the blessings of eternity to her has died along with him. The film explores the possible events of that night, including Jane’s endeavor to remain amongst the Mormon people and Emma’s struggle to cope with her heartbreaking loss. Poignant issues of racism and polygamy threaten to break their bond of friendship. In the end, will Jane and Emma have the courage to follow the path each believes they must take?

The JANE + EMMA cast includes Danielle Deadwyler as Jane (THE HAVES AND THE HAVE NOTS, GIFTED), Emily Goss as Emma Smith (THE HOUSE ON PINE STREET, SNAPSHOTS), Brad Schmidt as Joseph Smith (THE BIRTH OF A NATION, HOUSE OF LIES), and K. Danor Gerald as Isaac James (SAINTS AND SOLDIERS, THE VOID)

JANE & EMMA is directed by Chantelle Squires (THE WORK & THE GLORY trilogy) and written by Melissa Leilani Larson (FREETOWN). It is produced by Jenn Lee Smith, Madeline Jorgenson, and Tamu Smith and Zandra Vranes (Sistas in Zion) of Clearstone Films. The Executive Producers are Brent Jorgensen, Sundance Film Festival Co-Founder Stirling VanWagenen, and Jon Lear.
The movie also features the title song “Child of God,” performed by The Bonner Family.

Excel Film’s new movie highlights the relationship between Jane, an African American pioneer and Emma Smith. Theirs is a rare, real and riveting tale, says Tamu Smith, a black Mormon writer and speaker, but one “that has been lost to our history.”

QUOTE FROM DIRECTOR:
“This is a story of faith. In spite of all the hardships these women encounter, one of the things I love the most about this story is how deeply both women want to love God and obey him, even when what he is asking them to do seems impossible,” remarked Director Chantelle Squires.

Review

It’s been quite a while since I read a book cover to cover in one day, and I did just that with The Roses of Feldstone. So many moments to smile at. The writing is paced well and captivating, the symbolism of the Rose with a play in the main characters name is neatly threaded through out the book design, pages and story line. I enjoyed William’s quiet, silent gentle side which the reader has to tease out on their won because he is dealing with familial and societal constraints. Rose has a strong will and a gentle heart. Overall, the only complaint I had is that the kissing scenes seemed over the top for a Regency era novel and the nature of the relationship between the two. I stayed up late to finish as I truly enjoyed the writing style and personalities of all the characters.

Trek the Movie Release Tour

Trek The Movie
Actors: Joel Bishop
Rated: PG
Parental Guidance Suggested
Studio: Excel Entertainment
DVD Release Date: July 3, 2018

Amazon

Breview

I was eager to watch TREK based on the director’s message synopsis and quote. It did being a message that Heavenly Father is watching over us and answers our prayers. But, I let my teenage and younger children watch and they expressed that it seemed it was made for a wider audience and had some inappropriate parts. You may want to pre-watch before sitting down as a family to watch together.I would agree that the teens and adults making out were overdone and the swear word unnecessary. There are some triggers if you have experienced a drowning or death of a family member. Overall, I laughed our loud and I cried. I enjoyed the message of reaching out to seek for answers and receiving them. There is great character development and self-realization. There were a few parts that dragged and would loved to have seen some more pioneer stories being woven in. My children had some great advice to just fast forward whenever you see the drill sargeant looking guy or the teen couple 🙂 Worth the watch!

Content: swearing, heavy kissing, moderate blood and wounds, fighting, triggers for drowning and death of a teen.

Message from Alan Peterson, Director of TREK The Movie

It’s exciting to anticipate the DVD/BluRay release of TREK, the movie. Being with audiences in theaters is the fulfillment of any director’s dream. But, the reality of independent film is that you can’t get a movie into enough theaters so that everyone who wants to, can see it. July 3rd is a day that lots of TREK fans have been waiting for. Now, everyone can enjoy the laughs and lessons of TREK whenever they want. One of our goals in producing the movie was to create a story that would honor the wonderful tradition of this hands-on experience unique to our faith. Trek provides a critical chance to connect with our past. Why is this important? I’ll let Elder Russell M. Ballard explain:

“I have a deep conviction that if we lose our ties to those who have gone before us, including our pioneer forefathers and mothers, we will lose a very precious treasure. I have spoken about “Faith in Every Footstep” in the past and will continue in the future because I know that rising generations must have the same kind of faith that the early Saints had in the Lord Jesus Christ and His restored gospel.” (General Conference, October 2017, The Trek Continues!)

It is too easy to forget what our pioneer ancestors sacrificed for their faith and for our good. I hope families can sit down together and share the movie and talk about how grateful we should be for the men, women and children who marched into the unknown following a prophet of God so long ago. And, I hope they will talk about the challenges they face today as members of the church as we march forward into the unknown. Do you feel like Tom and wonder where God is? How do we connect with Him? What do we do when we feel weak and alone? Hopefully, TREK helps us know that our Heavenly Father is there and that He cares.
