Book Purse Giveaway

16 Mar, 2010 by in etsy, purse, recycled books 41 comments

Today’s giveaway is from BusyBeehive!
Hello and welcome to my little eclectic shop. My interests are wildly varied. I started as a stained glass artist, and quickly became addicted to fabric. I love creating art quilts and being able to incorporate different textures and fibers.I am always up to designing custom wall hangings, maybe your pet or hot rod car. I will do just about anything to keep my customers happy.I love using different textures, fibers and mediums. The most unusual material I use is Dryer Lint. Have’nt you always wanted to do something with all that fiber? I love to recycle when ever I can and use old items in my projects. As they say “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.”

Description
This unique purse is for the ultimate book lover or for someone wanting to make a fashion statement.Dare to be different. Great as a conversation piece. The book title is Breathing Lesson by Anne Tyler There is enough room for credit cards, lipstick and a few more smaller items and you are ready to go out on the town. This book purse measures approx. 5 3/4″ X 8 1/2 “, the interior’s fabric is beautiful Sunflowers. There is also a slim pocket. The closure is Glass, Acrylic and Metal beads. The handles are brown shiney patent leather. The books cover was in good condition but the pages were not. So I dont feel bad about taking the book apart and recycling it. This is so much better than ending up at the dump. Please treat this purse the same way you would treat a book. It is not weather or stain proof. If you are looking for a special book to have done, or you have that book, I can create a purse for you in my studio.

Mom’s Monday-Since We’re Friends

15 Mar, 2010 by in Since we're Friends Leave a comment

Author: Celeste Shally
Perfect Paperback: 32 pages
Release date: September 1, 2007
Awaken Specialty Press
ISBN: 0979471303 From School Library Journal
5 Stars
PreSchool-Grade 2

Product Description
Children with autism struggle to make friends and navigate social situations. However, one child can make a significant difference in the life of a child with autism by offering compassion, understanding and friendship.

Since We re Friends is about two boys. One has autism, the other does not. The story of their relationship provides practical examples of how to make such a friendship work. It will help children see that their peers with autism can make a fun, genuine contribution to friendship.

From the publisher:
The prevalence of autism has skyrocketed in recent years. One in every 150 children is now living with this pervasive developmental disorder. The handful of autism children’s books on the market represents the most severe cases of autism. However, most children with autism are much less severe. These misunderstood children struggle in social situations and have difficulty making friends. Since We re Friends will appeal to family members, friends, teachers, therapists, doctors, neighbors, and anyone who seeks to know and understand more about children with autism.

I purchased this book a few years ago when our second child was diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. I wanted to be able to explain to him and his sister (also diagnosed with ASD) what makes them special. And I serched for hands on tools to teach them how to be compassionate towards each other and their friends. I think books are a great conduit to help young ones understand behaviors that are hard to explain. My son absolutely adores this book and we read it together often. It helps him to see that he is not the only one who struggles with social situations and transitions. His best friend has been by his side since pre-school and both boys have special needs. Seeing interactions in the book and illustrations helps my son, be a better buddy. I like that “Since We’re Friends teaches accepting one another and offering support. I would recommend it to all parents since Autism is on the rise and often misunderstood. 5 stars from this momma!

Alice in Wonderland Necklace Giveaway

14 Mar, 2010 by in necklacce 14 comments

Today’s giveaway is from Cherished Trinkets! She makes amazing vintage jewelry and you’ll fall in love with her site!

I have always loved jewellery, right from being a small girl, raiding my Mothers Jewellery box (something I got into quite big trouble for). I would marvel at all the facets in the semi precious and precious stones and look in awe at the different coloured reflections from the glass beads. Most of my jewellery is created using sterling silver or silver plate to suit various purses. I first started making jewellery over two years ago, having found salvation in designing and creating something that can be worn and cherished for years to come, and soon became addicted to designing commissions and one off’s for people in all walks of life. I have also designed pieces for local shops specialising in items with a little difference. I really love the splendour and glamour of vintage jewellery and enjoy trying to represent this in some of my designs with the use of Cameos, freshwater and glass pearls and vintage beads. If I find something old that needs rescuing from an old jewellery item I shall try my hardest to find it a new home!

To Enter To Win an Alice in Wonderland Handmade Necklace: donate $1.00 minimum using the button on right.sidebar to our Chile relief fund. My friends over there need winter blankets and clothes. Their seasons are opposite the U.S. so it is getting cold living outdoors and I can buy items here on clearance!

Impossible by Nancy Werlin

details Hardcover, 384 pages

setting United States

3.5 stars

literary awards Booklist Editors’ Choice, Kirkus Reviews Best YA book of (2008), Publishers Weekly “Cuffie” honorable mention winner for 2009 in the categories “Favorite Novel of the Year” and “Best Novel for (2008)

isbn 0803730020

Lucy has nine months to break an ancient curse in order to save both herself and her unborn daughter. Inspired by the ballad “Scarborough Fair,” this riveting novel combines suspense, fantasy, and romance for an intensely page-turning and masterfully original tale.

Lucy is seventeen when she discovers that the women of her family have been cursed through the generations, forced to attempt three seemingly impossible tasks or to fall into madness upon their child’s birth. But Lucy is the first girl who won’t be alone as she tackles the list. She has her fiercely protective foster parents and her childhood friend Zach beside her. Do they have love and strength enough to overcome an age-old evil?

I picked up this book at Wal-Mart because of the awesome photography on the cover and the fact that it’s about an Elfin knight. It is a slow paced but poetic read based on folk music and fairy lore. It tackles some really strong issues like mental illness, rape, and teenage pregnancy in a mature and beautiful way. I honestly loved that it taught abstinence before marriage, taking responsibility for your baby and the power of true love. Zach is a shining example of stepping up when the going gets rough and Lucy is true to her childhood love and values. I think the material covered is best for ages 16 and older, but great for teenage mothers and those about to get married. Werlin teaches that determination and hard work can conquer the evils of this world and the curses of an unseen world.
