"Inside Out" By Maria V Snyder

21 Apr, 2010 by in book review, maria v snyder 4 comments

published April 1st 2010 by Harlequin
details Paperback, 313 pages
3.5 stars

synopsis from goodreads… I’m Trella. I’m a scrub. A nobody. One of thousands who work the lower levels, keeping Inside clean for the Uppers. I’ve got one friend, do my job and try to avoid the Pop Cops. So what if I occasionally use the pipes to sneak around the Upper levels? Not like it’s all that dangerous – the only neck I risk is my own. Until I accidentally start a rebellion and become the go-to girl to lead a revolution. I should have just said no…

I got this book as part of the Mundie Moms ARC tour and Maria V. Snyder is one of my favorite authors. Her Poison Study series for adults is incredible. What I love about Maria’s writing is that she portrays a strong, stubborn emotionally guarded female who can hold her own. One with little attachment to her parents or past who has troubles with trust. A woman who is looking to buck the status quo and find a better society. Along comes a man to help her ands the rest is always beautiful as they work to smooth our her rough edges, yet there is acceptance and respect between them. I saw interesting parallels in the books. This one also reminded me a lot of the Uglies series by Scott Westerfield.
Inside Out is science fiction mixes with a touch of innocent romance. The reader is transported into a world consisting of class distinctions, overcrowding and manual labor where Big Brother- the Pop Cops watch your every step. Trella is the heroine, the princess of the pipes. She is not short on courage or guts and she takes a revolution into her own hands with the help of dreamy Riley. The clock is ticking and her friends lives are on the line. Can they find the gateway to a new life in time to save him?
I admit after a few days of thought this book left an impression and grew even more on me. I give it 3.5 stars and think we will see “Inside Out” in libraries and classrooms across the country as a topic of discussion. Well done once again Maria!

Daniel writes…”I got the idea while reading Eclipse for the second time
when Seth and Riley are fighting wouldn’t the wolfpack’s sixth sense notify Jacob of what was going on? No way he’d leave Bella alone if he knew she was being attacked. “

Shadow Hills Review and Giveaway

“Shadow Hills” by Anastasia Hopcus
to be published July 13th 2010 by Egmont USA
details Hardcover, 400 pages
isbn 1606840835
4.5 Stars

Synopsis from Goodreads: ” Since her sister’s mysterious death, Persephone “Phe” Archer has been plagued by a series of disturbing dreams. Determined to find out what happened to her sister, Phe enrolls at Devenish Prep in Shadow Hills, Massachusetts—the subject of her sister’s final diary entry.

After stepping on campus, Phe immediately realizes that there’s something different about this place—an unexplained epidemic that decimated the town in the 1700s, an ancient and creepy cemetery, and gorgeous boy Zach—and somehow she’s connected to it all.

But the more questions she asks and the deeper she digs, the more entangled Phe becomes in the haunting past of Shadow Hills. Finding what links her to this town…might cost her her life.

I have been waiting and waiting to read this book since I first met Anatasia Hopcus after she entered one of our blog giveaways and I found out she is Team Edward. Later she sent us the first chapter and after I read it I was hooked! So when it came in my mailbox this week as part of the ARC tour I was ecstatic!!! I must say it is a book that will keep you captivated from start to finish. Phe lives an ordinary High School life until she starts having mysterious dreams after the death of her sister. Why is she having visions of a graveyard and a boy she’s never met at the same time every night? And who is he?

After enrolling at a prestigious school in Shadow Hills she realizes all is not what it seems. She is drawn by an unseen pull to a boy names Zach and together they unravel the secrets hidden for centuries. You’ll find yourself pulled into a whirlwind of mesmerizing characters, magic and chemistry that can’t be denied. Phe is strong and sassy and Zach is the perfect Yin to her Yang. I am sure hoping Anastasia is is hoping on keeping these characters for a sequel because I am dying for more!
Read our previous posts about Anastasia here…
And, I just happened to have a couple of signed Shadow Hills bookmarks and pins laying around for a giveaway!

Steampunk Book Thong Giveaway

Today’s Etsy giveaway is from one of my absolute favorite shops
Happenchance and Odd
“I’m a Mommy. A good day is when I have had enough time to shower and brush my teeth.

I seem like a totally suburban housewife by the light of day. But, after a goodnight song, hug and kiss for my babies I turn into the Steampunk Goddess.

I spend my long insomnia filled nights working on designs, creating, searching Etsy for things I don’t need but must have or I will die.

What is Steampunk? Plain and simple, its old stuff made into something new. There is great beauty in vintage items that can not be found in the mass produced items in chain stores. Why adorn yourself with something hundreds of others have? It seems to me an easier, less painful self expression than a tattoo but with the same effect. Wearing a piece of Steampunk jewelry explains exactly who you are without having to say a word.
