Live Your Best Lie

Sometimes the prettiest Instagram feeds hide the darkest—and bloodiest—secrets.

Social media influencer Summer Cartwright leads a charmed life: millions of followers, the trendiest designer and vintage clothing in her closet, a newly minted book deal, the coolest friends, and until recently, the hottest boyfriend at her über elite prep school. Every moment of her life has been carefully planned and cultivated to complement her “perfectly imperfect” online persona. She is truly #LivingHerBestLife.

But when Summer goes missing during her annual Halloween party and an unscheduled post appears on her feed claiming she’ll be dead in the next five minutes, those closest to Summer—her bestie, her ex-boyfriend, her frenemy, and her wannabe—know it isn’t a media stunt for attention. It’s not Summer’s brand. Something is wrong. When their investigation leads to Summer’s lifeless body, they’re forced to accept that she was murdered. And no filter is strong enough to mask the lies they tell themselves.

Told in multiple POVs interspersed with social media posts and flashbacks, Live Your Best Lie has twists and turns that will keep readers turning the page and no one will be able to guess the ending.

5 stars. I did write Live Your Best Lie, so I might be biased. That said, I'm pretty proud of it.

With less than two months until Live Your Best Lie launches, I wanted to pop in for a moment (but just a moment--Goodreads is for readers, not authors!) to say thank you. Publishing a book is a hard-fought dream come true for me, and I am so grateful.

To me, Live Your Best Lie is about compromised hearts and the invisible masks we wear to protect ourselves. While writing, I asked myself lots of questions, like: how much would you be willing to compromise to get what you wanted? What does living a lie do to your heart? What kind of masks do we wear in front of other people, and what happens if we remove them? Is it better to protect your heart or risk it, knowing it could be broken?

Live Your Best Lie is about murder, but it's also about people who make hard choices. It's about people who live the lie, and people who learn to tell themselves the truth.

I hope you love it. <3

This is the kind of book true mystery enthusiast will gobble up. Rather than being an impossible solve or so obvious you've got Mr. Peacock in the library with the candlestick by page 50, this is a true crime solvers' read. Pay attention because right from page one, the clues to solving this twisted drama are unfolding before you and the answers to your questions are all there.
Even if you're not the cerebral sleuth, Live Your Best Lie is chocked full of personable characters and relatable modern dilemmas that suck you in and keep you turning pages. Highly recommend as a book club read because you're going to want to talk about this one!

I had the privilege of reading an advanced copy of this book, and it’s Gossip Girl meets Agatha Christie in the best way. Definitely the type of YA book I’d recommend to either young adults, or adult readers who love a good whodunnit. Clever, interesting, and just the right amount of twisty, this is such a fun read!

Thank you to the publisher for an ARC of Live Your Best Lie, by Jessie Weaver!

As a Young Adult librarian, I can pretty confidently say that teens who loved One of us is Lying, by Karen M. McManus, are going to love Live Your Best Lie.

It is a fast-paced, multiple pov, mystery surrounding a murdered teen influencer and the toxicity of her relationships and online persona. Told in multiple formats: social media posts, flash-backs, and texts; the focus jumps from suspect to suspect, holding the lens up to the camp roomie, the ex, the bestie, and the wannabe.

The multiple formats and flashbacks definitely kept me reading and trying to discover everyone’s hidden secret. While I binged this book in two days (even in the midst of family gatherings) the thing that could’ve made it stellar for me is some more nuance to the characters, specifically Summer.

Overall, a solid young adult mystery that I will definitely be ordering for my library!

Unputdownable! I absolutely devoured this fantastic murder mystery debut. Jessie Weaver's writing is so immersive, and each POV character feels absolutely distinct and completely alive. The mystery is expertly twisted and layered, leaving me guessing until the very end. Highly recommend!

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for my ARC.

Fans of murder mysteries, look no further. This book hits all the right notes for me. Interesting Characters, compelling motives, multiple POV, clues revealed through different mediums (Instagram posts, Police Interviews, Newspaper articles). This book was just pure fun. I can’t wait to see what comes next from this debut author!

Summer Cartwright has what everyone wants: beautiful flat in L.A., designer clothes, and a massive following online. Anything she wears, eats, and likes becomes the next new trend. With everything going for her, what could possibly go wrong?

The book kicks off with a Halloween party at Summer's flat, introducing us to all the characters. We have her best friend Grace, gamer boyfriend Adam, sarcastic former roommate Lanie, and superfan Cora. We get a glimpse of Summer's life through the eyes of those closest to her and learn what compels each of them to stay. Then Summer is found dead.

Whose motive is strong enough for murder? Can they trust anyone at that party? With the intrigue of "One of Us Is Lying" and the fun of "Knives Out", I believe Live Your Best Lie will be a YA book to remember.

It's another no from me. The premise could have been fun, but it all felt rather flat. I like the multi-POV (always a good touch, I think, in a book with so many suspects), and I liked how varied the cast is. But I found my disbelief grew too large to be suspended. The characters weren't fun enough and the writing wasn't stellar enough for me to just go along with it. And (no spoilers, of course) the ending felt like it was supposed to be some big, bad revelation--a "gotcha" type of twist--but it didn't work for me. That is to say, I don't think it was earned. It just, kind of, was.

Anyway, there were some good things here, and there will definitely be an audience for this book. My full review will be available at Gateway Reviews on February 10, 2023.

Stayed up way too late reading this book because I could not put it down! Weaver’s writing style and formatting (there are multiple points of view, IG posts, text conversations, and police interviews) completely drew me into the story. Her characters think and struggle in ways that are incredibly human, realistic, and relatable. I found myself rooting for them all … even though I knew one had to be guilty. Also, such a shocking twist at the end. I’m thinking back through the book to remember any clues or hints I might have missed. I love books that make me re-think about everything I just read in a new light, like that. So good!

Loved this book! Not a big mystery reader but I was so invested in what happened with Summer. The twist at the end was shocking and did not see it coming. I was guessing who done it with every character and suspected them all at least once. (Probably would never have figured it out with my horrible deduction skills, though).

What a thrilling read! Jessie Weaver's masterful story telling blew me away and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. AND THE ENDING WAS THE TWIST I DIDN'T KNOW I WAS NEEDING!!! It totally came from out of nowhere in the best way possible and I didn't see it coming at all. I can't wait to read more of Weaver's work!

Trying so hard to be Karen M. McManus and failing in a cringe-worthy way. There was no pull, no intrigue, no emotional reaction to anything that happened. The ending was bad. It was well put together and complete but that doesn't make it a good murder mystery. Up until the last chapter, I wasn't even convinced there was a murder at all.

the rising sun through her window stripes her yellow quilt with shadows, wrong, all wrong. how can the sun still rise? how can she? it’s been two nights and a day since summer died, time that grace has still lived.
what i liked:
- laney.
what i didn’t like:
- information was kept from the reader for way too long; like am i supposed to just accept that this specific group of people randomly decided to work together to solve the murder of their “friend”? not to mention, they only start working together towards the very end of the book. the rest of the time we just spend with their boring drama that never gets fully explained, or if it does, again, it’s only towards the end of the book. so i'm sorry if i don't care that adam dated summer but liked grace who is now dating harrison who just so happens to be summer's brother;

- the police work was so funny to me. wdym they just gave away the specific cause of death to the people who should probably be considered the main suspects? i think the cause of death could’ve been presented to the reader differently;

- summer is a very stereotypical influencer. she truly had no other personality trait other than caring too much about herself and having a lot of followers. oh and she was obviously nice sometimes yet it was just a façade and she was a bitch. i get that the author probably intended for her to be that way but a little more depth to her character would've been nice;

- summer is writing a memoir (for whatever reason) and seeing as the book includes captions from her instagram posts throughout, you get to read snippets of her book. not to be a bitch but no one would publish a book written like that. also, do people really care about this random influencer THAT much for her memoir to be that big of a deal?

- on that note, the instagram captions were so unnecessary and poorly written. i also don’t think i’ve ever seen an influencer write captions like that, but i’ll digress. the only ones that added anything to the story were the ones i just mentioned – that included snippets from the book -, but the other ones did not need to be there whatsoever;

- lastly, i don't think the author knows how social media works <3

This was such a fun read. Not my usual genre, but I was thoroughly entertained. I loved reading the different points of view and trying to figure out "whodunit". Of course I failed miserably, and now I want to read it again to look for the clues I missed the first time! I'm definitely recommending it to friends.

Jessie Weaver’s debut novel is SO riveting and addictive! This young adult mystery is about a prominent social media influencer who is found dead at her Halloween party. Four people who are close to her are all suspects and they all have ✨motives✨. As someone who works in social media marketing as my day job, I found the plot really interesting! This book is filled with enthralling visuals like social media posts, text messages, newspaper articles, and police transcripts! I’ve never seen a book like this and it was SO fun and unique! I always couldn’t wait to read the next social media post. The book is written from multiple points of view, so it really took a deep-dive into each character’s perception of events, their inner thoughts, and motives. Each chapter was fast-paced and contributed to the plot. I loved how all the suspects were working together to clear their names, knowing that there was a killer among them. A really fascinating concept! And woah—the ending!! 🤯 I was genuinely surprised! All this to say, I highly recommend this fun mystery! Fans of Gossip Girl, you will love this book.

As a true crime aficionado, it is rare for me to find a story that leaves me quite literally shocked by the ending and reveal of “who dunnit,” but this book DELIVERED! When reading this book, you get transported into the world of influencers, as this book shatters some glittery social media illusions by introducing you to the dark side behind the pretty social media posts of Summer Cartwright (teen fashionista and lifestyle guru). When an influencer is murdered and the truth about her not-so-picture-perfect life gets revealed, not even her friends and family are beyond suspicion, as everyone scrambles to clear their names for the crime while also trying to protect their own secrets from being exposed. Colorful, relatable characters and an environment so real to life dragged me into this novel and kept me turning page after page: I literally couldn’t put it down! "Live Your Best Lie" is a 10/10!

Movie studio daughter and hugely successful social media influenced Summer bbbb invited her inner circle of real life friends from her high school. Soon after they all arrive, Summer ends up dead on her bathroom floor. The police begin looking closely at these five people, who all have something secret and possibly shameful in their pasts. And more interestingly, Summer had been blackmailing and/or using these five, giving them all possible motives for murder.

Author Jessie Weaver reveals past conversations between Summer and each of these five people gradually, over the course of the story. There is sufficient motive for any of the five to be the actual murderer, but realistically, there are only two who really could really have done it. The story is enjoyable, but not that hard to figure, once one peripheral character lays out movements of the suspects. Still, a diverting story of a totally unlikeable person getting whacked.

I loved how the author found a way to create empathy for even the most flawed characters. The plot twists kept me guessing and the witty prose kept me laughing. Would definitely recommend.

I couldn't get into Live Your Best Lie by Jessie Weaver. The plot sounds interesting, but the pacing is slow, and to be frank, it's boring.

The villain/protagonist is Summer Cartwright, a rich, spoiled, and evil social media influencer. Her popularity on Instagram garners a book deal. Summer decides to write a tell-all, but since she's under the age of eighteen, what exactly does she have to tell? Her family and friends' personal secrets. Even the secrets that reveal her true personality. Someone has a secret too big to be revealed and kills Summer before her book goes into publication. This sounds interesting, right?

It's not! I enjoy suspense, but I was literally on chapter 22 of 38, wondering when the reader would receive even a sliver of information regarding these secrets that could destroy the characters. Everyone in the story is in High School, so I knew it wouldn't be anything major, but the big reveal was lame.

Murder is bad, try to avoid it, but there's one secret that's worth popping Summer upside the head. It's the biggest part of the book, and Weaver sprints right by it. It's a very weird choice, but after 368 pages, I was over it.

Live Your Best Lie is not a good read, but if you're interested, try it via your local library. I'm fairly certain that this book isn't on KU.

This is my high school English teacher’s debut book, so I started reading to support her, but I was pleasantly surprised by how good this was! It’s a YA book so I had expectations of it being too simple, but the twists in the last few chapters were honestly so much better than so many of the popular thrillers I’ve read lately! Definitely recommend reading this because you’ll enjoy it, you’ll be shocked, and most importantly you’ll be supporting a new author who deserves the love🫶🏼

(Mrs. Weaver if you’re reading this I gave it 4 stars because it was just a little slow in the beginning lolol)

There were a lot of things I liked about this book!

It’s told from the perspective of Summer’s friends through their current POV, flashbacks, texts, and social media posts. This format works really well with the story being told and helps to create a more immersive world.

I really enjoyed the twist at the end. In my opinion it was just the right amount of unpredictable. Every chapter in this book kept me guessing.

The one thing I have to critique is the pacing throughout the story. It doesn’t read like it’s slow, but the real action is very condensed toward the end of the book. The first time they actively go out and look for clues together is basically the beginning of the climax. It feels like after Summer dies, for most of the book the four main characters are just sitting around and reflecting on their relationships with her, and not really interacting with each other except for occasionally Adam and Grace. This book was by no means hard to read, but this does make it a bit slower.

Overall this was a fun mystery that I would recommend to anyone who enjoyed One of us is Lying, We Were Liars, or A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.

Live Your Best Lie focuses on teenage influencer Summer Cartwright. Summer has millions of followers and posts about her life and friends, hoping to turn those posts into a best-selling memoir. She goes missing during her big Halloween party and a mysterious post shows up, making everyone believe that she is actually hosting a murder mystery party. But then Summer is found dead and the story then focuses on Summer's friends, who all had reasons to want her dead. A good mystery, told from the points of view of Summer's friends. You'll probably be surprised by the ending (although folks who pick up on context clues won't be).

Great cover, fun premise, but really boring, with one-dimensional characters, a draggy plot, and a total nonsense ending.

Lots of other reviewers loved it, which is why I didn’t DNF hoping it would pay off, but this was not a good one for me.
