BOOK DESCRIPTION
London, 1865
Vera Sorokina loves reading the Penny Dreadfuls and immersing herself in tales
of adventure, mystery, and romance. Her own days are filled with the often-
mundane work of running the book and print shop she owns with her father. The
shop offers her the freedom and income to employ and protect the poverty-
stricken Londoners she’s come to care about, and it gives her father something
to do other than long for their hometown of St. Petersburg. She is grateful for the
stability in their lives, but she often feels lonely.
Brogan Donnelly was born and raised in Ireland, but has lived in London for
several years, where he’s built a career as a Penny Dreadful writer. He has
dedicated himself to the plight of the poor with the help of his sister. His
membership in the secretive Dread Penny Society allows him to feel he isn’t
entirely wasting his life, yet he feels dissatisfied. With no one to share his life with
but his sister, he fears London will never truly feel like home.
Brogan and Vera’s paths cross, and the attraction is both immediate and ill-
advised. Vera knows from experience that writers are never to be trusted, and
Brogan has reason to suspect not everything at her print shop is aboveboard. When the growing criminal enterprise run by the elusive and violent Mastiff
begins targeting their area of London, Brogan and Vera must work together to
protect the community they’ve both grown to love. But that means they’ll need to
learn to trust each other with dangerous secrets that have followed both of them
from their home countries.

Review
The Dread Penny Society is back again in installment three of Sarah Eden’s series. I liked this one best of all of them I’ve read. Brogan and his sister are heroes in their own right and there’s so much more to them than the rumors which have been spread. The reader learns to look beneath the surface past the obvious. Vera is a strong woman in London who runs a shop and takes care of street urchins on the side. It truly is a hard life to live on the streets of London as a child at this time. Shop owners are also battling bullies and crime to keep their doors open.
I do recommend reading these books in order as they build on one another and the characters carry over. If you are a point A to point B reader who likes plot resolution before moving on, you may want to delay reading the penny dreadful chapters all in one sitting, since they break up the pacing and plot. I was able to follow along this time since I enjoyed the candy store plot with paranormal folklore sandwiched in between the main chapters. This is a unique series with rich detail. Loved the cover design and colors. Enjoy!
I received a complimentary advanced copy from the publisher, thoughts are my own.
Content and trigger warning: moderate violence, crimes against women and children.

Lovely post, Heather. I am glad that you enjoyed it too. I hope that there is another book in the series. Best, LA
